This camera is without a competitor in its category: A pocketable superzoom. For me, that makes it indispensable. Mine has gotten quite a workout over the years (I have the 730 version which is basically identical). I have taken lots of shots I simply could not have gotten with any other camera with a lesser zoom. A huge superzoom camera might have gotten the shots, but would have stuck out like a sore thumb, and been heavier and more awkward to lug around. So, yeah, the images can be a bit soft at the telephoto end, and the autofocus is sometimes slow and doesn't nail it, but there is just no other camera that fills this niche. I only wish Camera would release a new version.
I lent my wife this camera a year and a half ago and I've not got it back. She loves its size, the superzoom and how much fun it is to use. I love point and shoot cameras because with the arthritis in my wrists it makes photography literally more fun and less painful. I may have to buy another before they're discontinued as I'm not getting my copy back anytime soon. Great review and good to see this camera being reviewed in 2024.
I think I might buy this I’ve been hesitant because I’ve seen some blurry videos and pictures from other reviews but I think it really just comes down to the person knowing how to use the camera properly otherwise it’s not gonna look good
loved your video!!!! sub'ed. i laughed many times along the narration 😂😂😂 well done. it's just the review i was looking for!!! thank you 🙏🙏🙏 greeting and love from Tel-Aviv ♥
Thank you for you video. I have one of these and by and large I have been happy with it. I find the biggest limitation is the absence of raw shooting and not having a view finder.
Another informative, fun and entertaining video, great work as usual! This summer I have taken up cycling, and I thought about having a camera in my handlebar bag so I can quickly grab it if something interesting pops up like wildlife or an interesting building or some pretty scenery. I'm not interested in action cameras, but want something with some decent optical zoom that would be better than a phone. Of course it needs to be compact, but carry a big punch without breaking the bank. I have some old compact cameras but none really do the job for me (very slow to focus even in good conditions, inadequate zoom) and I am looking for something newer. This camera was the first to come to mind.
If it's just to be consumed in digital and jpeg then this probably isn't a bad shout. I wanted a camera to possibly take over from my Canon 750D and still have the compact form factor, especially for family events and potential future vacations and concert photography so went with the RX100 VII but I'm fortunate to be able to borrow some money
The zoomed photos are really nice and I could see myself potentially picking it up for times when I can't reach that far with the 200mm of the RX100 VII. It looks like there's either low stock of it right now or it has just been discontinued in the last couple of months here and so they are going for over retail price in both pre-owned and new condition.
The reflection of the screen is no issue, I just put a matte screen protector on it, protects screen and eliminates any glare and seeing in bright sun is still no issue. I use this all the time to take pictures of birds, the zoom can't be beat for this size of camera and the image quality is great. The camera feels nice in the hand and has a decent grip so its not like a Sony that is hard to grip unless you buy an ugly aftermarket handle. The timelapse feature is excellent because Sony doesnt have that without software. So its just one extra annoying step. Canon has one of the most intuitive menus available. I am going from Sony RX100 to Canon over the menu. I am through with Sony, too many extra steps, uneccessary complications for the cost. All sony has going for it is the 1" sensor...beyond that its fluff. Interesting video and great examples, you didn't sit there and talk forever while filming yourself like many reviewers you actually were speaking while showing examples. Much appreciated for not pissing away peoples time. liked and subscribed.
Hey there, my friend. Thanks for calling this to my attention. I actually never heard of this model but did a little research. Canon must have very quietly announced this model recently after the original SX740 was discontinued. From what I can see its essentially identical but you cannot charge via the USB connector. Here is the spec sheet: en.canon-cna.com/cameras/powershot-sx740-hs-lite-edition/ I'm just not sure this is available in every country and may be tough to find but it looks to be physically identical to the original. It's funny they call it "lite" the SX740 is so darn light to begin with!
I love this camera for wildlife, birds, insects, bugs and clouds even great pics of the moon.Macro is Great to.The spring on the lens cover broke. Is it worth fixing.I also have the Sony RX IV 100 GREAT Macro and the Nikon P 1000 REALLY great for the Moon,Planets.I was told KEEP all three. Thanks now I will take pics in P mode.
My husband has the Canon SX730. Almost the same thing, but no touch screen on back, and only 1080p videi, while I think the SX740 has 4K. It makes decent quality images. He really likes it. I tried to get him to try my old Canon M6 mk II to move to the interchangeable lens ecosystem, and I have a ton of EF lenses that work well with the M6 II and my R5C, but he doesn't want to even try them, thinking they are too complicated and overwhelming. He just loves his SX730; So compact for its capabilities, and such long reach; It reaches further than my EF 100-400 IS II with a 1.4x extender on it. Incredible, although the image quality on the SX730 is nowhere near that lens.
Well, you know what they say , its hard to teach an old dog new tricks haha Yes for sure your M6 will produce a better image but what your husband probably really appreciates is the ultimate portability you get with his SX730 and its super simple to use. Sometimes the mirrorless cameras can be a bit intimidating if you dont take the time to learn all the bells and whistles. Thanks for sharing.
Yep! You're absolutely correct. He's very happy with it, so I leave him be with what he's comfortable using. It is definitely a fun little camera to use and bring around everywhere. It can go where the M6 II can't. :)
Hi, I love the way you review these compact camera video's. As you mention here, I am looking for one to take to concerts, for filming and pictures, but I really like to film. Is there one you would personally recommend is best for those kind of settings?
Hi, thanks for the compliment! This Canon SX740 is really good--for concerts and general shooting ..have you looked at the Sony RX100 series? I have a few videos on those the latest model is the RX100VII ..they are definitely a step up in quality, as they have a bigger sensor and are more expensive but the results will be cleaner in low light because of the larger sensor. So it depends on your budget!
@techtoremember8096 that was my first thought actually the RX100VII but I read it overheated easily when filming which made me question things again haha. I prefer to pay more for a camera that I will actually enjoy the footage off! But thank you! I'm definitely gonna watch all the video's about those series again!
Yes you are right about overheating but that is if you shoot in 4k .And you can fix that in the menu with a setting in the menu for auto power off for high temperature. But yes, feel free to check out the other videos to learn more!
Loved this video! Thanks!! Could you advise if I should get the Canon PowerShot sx 740 hs or the Sony ZV-1? I’m planning to use the camera for casual photography. 🤩
The Sony has a much larger 1" sensor and will give you better results. Of course you won't have the zoom range. If you would like better results and can sacrifice the long zoom, then the Sony will be the better option but if you like the long zoom, then go with the Canon! Thanks for the comment!
Nice review! But the Sony RX100 VII has also only 30 fps in 4K, so it’s not a trouble to me (the missing mic port, yes) and I believe It’s common in these type of cameras. Ty 😊
Thanks for the video it was super informative! I discovered this as I was trying to find a cheaper alt for gx7. Do you think this is a good beginner camera? I would use it mainly to take pics when traveling or outdoors. Do you think not having a viewfinder really is an issue? Also, what's your opinion on refurbished ones? Thanks a lot.
Hey there....Having a VF is a personal issue. As someone who has been used to using them in cameras I do find myself missing it if a camera doesn't have it, but if you don't really find it an issue and are comfortable with a screen only, then its no problem. GX7 is a very similar camera and I think it would be a fine choice ..Refurbished or used is OK just make sure you know who the seller is, and that its not a shady place or person you are getting it from and you should be ok! Thanks for the comment.
Digital zoom in video mode has it's place if wisely applied. The sensor with 16mpx or more is already oversampling. I think that's how iZoom works in handycams like Sony AX 55 - digital zoom is greater in HF than 4K digital zoom. I have a simmilar camera - Samsung WB 250f with "just" 18x zoom. It's from 2013, but I didn't notice any improvement in picture quality in moder 1/2.3" cameras from today, like this Canon :/
Any plans to review the EOS R1? They are supposed to have an insane autofocus and tracking that rivals Sony's legendary system. So maybe you can do a a head to head comparison Canon VS Sony. Maybe R1 VS Alpha 1, which I think is a fair comparison. It would be interesting to say the least. That would be a great 2 or 3 part series to cover all the features in some detail. It could help people decide if they want to take the plunge on the camera and also act as a mini guide to its use for those who went ahead and got one. Many people will be interested. Who knows, Canon may send you something to demo.
Your videos Sir are thoughtful, fun, out of ordinary. Unfortunately I couldn't find this camera nor the sx730 or 720 in my country Algeria, the only model available is the sx710hs, and I am not sure about it. Di You recommend it, I am a photo guy I don't do videos at all
Thank you for the comment. Its a fun camera to use but i know its hard to get. I do recommend it, as long as you are not too picky but there are other choices out there
I love this camera so much that I bought a second one. About the only thing it's missing for me is a mic jack. Despite the flaws of the original ZV-1, combine it with the 740 lens, and it would be perfect for me. At least till 8k video or larger becomes standard. A couple summers ago I filmed fireworks that turned out beautifully. After it died down I decided to take a shot of the full moon. It has so much detail you would have thought it was taken from a large telescope, if not shot from space. Canon really needs to update this camera with a newer sensor, a mic jack, and USB-C. Maybe improve the IBIS but that's it.
Hey there. The Samsung slipped under my radar. Seems like a cute little camera very small for a 1" sensor. With that larger performance for sure you'll get some better images but it seems to be an interchangeable lens camera and there are no lenses which can touch the zoom of the SX740 so depends what your priorities are! Thanks for the comment
Hi! Is it a good idea to buy this camera in 2024? I am not a photographer. I need a compact, easy to use, easy to carry camera with good zoom. I have Samsung s24+ which does capture pretty good pictures. I am interested in its 40x zoom. Should I but this camera in 2024?. In india it costs around $512.
Well, there aren't many other cameras like this being made anymore unless you want to buy something used. For the price its not a bad little camera if you don't mind the lack of a Viewfinder. I was pretty impressed with it! The zoom is awesome
Well, they are both very different. There are aspects of each I like. I love the pocketabilty of the Canon. You can't put the Panasonic in your pocket. But the Canon does not have a viewfinder and I find that a real issue . At times I would use the Canon for sure but when I shoot seriously, I feel a viewfinder is essential especially for long zooms so you can focus on your subject and add to the stability.
Excellent presentation and talk of pros and cons. A shame that the stabilisation is so lousy. Otherwise what a zoom power in such a small body. Thanks!
@@techtoremember8096 quite amazing how Canon ignores the obvious facts, strange indeed! I have the Pana FZ2500 with only 20 zoom, and the shaking is far less.
The zoom is going to be higher quality and longer reach. If you are going to be using it for general shooting (without the zoom) the image quality will be very close but for zooming, the Canon really is a powerhouse so it depends on how you use it.
Hey yes I use "P" mode. The problem with full auto is you can't set the focus to center so the camera decides what to focus on and often its wrong. When you set the camera to P, in the menu just set the focus to center focus. That's how I have been using the camera and it works well.
They really are very different. The 300 will definitely give you better image quality. Its a full size camera with a viewfinder and a longer zoom constant aperture 2.8 Its definitely a more souped up camera!
They are both very different. People get the SX740 primarily for the long zoom. It has a small sensor and won't do well in lower light situations. Gets grainy quickly. The G7Mark 2 is more of an all around camera, larger sensor, better photos but way less of a zoom so depends on your application.
@@techtoremember8096 I felt this part of your presentation missed a key point. The lens becomes irrelevant in an outdoor or indoor concert, what matters most is where is the best sound recording position, once that position is established, then the zoom lens matters.
Honest and curious question: I am a content creator here on youtube filming my keyboard covers using my smartphone. From 2020-early 2024 i was using poco f2 pro (sony imx686 sensor), and now when my poco f2 pro died, my bro gave me his old galaxy s8+ and i have been shooting with it since (i have videos on my channel. Just click my name). Is this camera a huge upgrade from a phone camera? I saw a secondhand one at a local marketplace selling for $60.43 (Php3499 in the Philippines).
Thats a good question. There are only some basic focus modes. Full auto which i don't recommend because you don't know what it will focus on. Center AF, tracking and manual. If you want to focus on something that isn't in the center, you have to point the camera a the subject with the center box over it, half press the shutter then move the camera to your desired position so that essentially the corner will be in focus. You can't specify a focus box in the corner. Or you could manually focus it.
ive had this for 3 years, the main hing is telephoto, if you never zoom, not much point....lack of viewfinder only affects bright daytime....zoom is not good at night, smartphone photos are much better for indoor shots, the pixel 7 pro which is much cheaper than this camera is much better at everything up to 5x..... the tilt show mode is good, its awfull and grainy at lowlight...the hdmi isnt clean output so if you use hdmi usb capture to computer, you may get controls....no usb webcam mode. you need recent smartphone to get bluetooth geotagging using canon app....
Well many of the cell phone cameras are different. I think in good light they will be similar but the difference with the SX740 is the optical zoom ability which is an advantage over cell phones.
Hello, it is an older model but still currently being sold and very popular. There are fewer and fewer models of these available so there is a big interest in these small all in one point and shoots. Newer models will be reviewed as well however.
New models? Where...the point and shoot segment is basically stagnant. Any new models of any make are going to have meaningless petty so-called improvements. take the ZV1 and the ZV1 II. Just a rehash and reintroduced to sell more hype. Not much difference to review. Canon is basically putting all their effort into making the R1 a big thing. They have all but abandoned the point and shoot.
just got this camera and i love it! this video really helped me decide and im very thankful for that!
That's great to hear! Hope you enjoy it and thanks for the comment!
haha, wasn't expecting someone to make a video on this in July of 2024, very interesting and this camera really is amazing.
2018 camera they are going for crazy prices now in the uk £600 to £700 2nd hand !! :)
@brianhayes5739 whaaat, that's crazy. Why is that so?

Thanks so much ! I hope so too !
snagged one of these on facebook marketplace for $100. took it on a few vacations and I really loved it.
You got a great deal!
Hi, try Sony HX99 - it is much better than this canon.
Nikon A1000 is much better.
@@Haroon65 But the Nikon is not close to being pocketable.
Sony and Panasonic offer equivalent cameras.
Not to my knowledge -they did in the past but not now If you know a model number please let us know !
I bought this camera in this year. It's super awesome device)))
I think I might buy this I’ve been hesitant because I’ve seen some blurry videos and pictures from other reviews but I think it really just comes down to the person knowing how to use the camera properly otherwise it’s not gonna look good
The compactness of a long zoom camera can't be any better than this.
It certainly is compact now, even more so without the EVF!
I am thinking about buying a camera for my 18th birthday and your review was lots of help. Thanks!
Cool ! Glad it could help
In this excellent video you mention that the camera has USB C, but actually only micro USB. Thanks for the thorough review anyway!
Oh did I ? Sorry about that Thanks for the comment and letting me know !
he said the older version did not this one
Thank you for this very very exhaustive review and filming bands you like. ;)

Thats too bad yes at full telephoto these small sensor cameras do get a bit softer so that's the compromise.
Thank you so much for this!

Do you choose This camera over the FZ80D 🤔 or which one do you recommend
Well, they are both very different. There are aspects of each I like. I love the pocketabilty of the Canon. You can't put the Panasonic in your pocket. But the Canon does not have a viewfinder and I find that a real issue . At times I would use the Canon for sure but when I shoot seriously, I feel a viewfinder is essential especially for long zooms so you can focus on your subject and add to the stability.
Excellent presentation and talk of pros and cons. A shame that the stabilisation is so lousy. Otherwise what a zoom power in such a small body. Thanks!
Also your black and white photos do look good!
Thanks! I know the stabilization on High is actually worse than Low. Go figure!
Thank you!
@@techtoremember8096 quite amazing how Canon ignores the obvious facts, strange indeed! I have the Pana FZ2500 with only 20 zoom, and the shaking is far less.
I have the 720! It takes nights shots
Would you buy this instead of an iphone or Samsung top end phones s24 ultra or 16 pro max?
The zoom is going to be higher quality and longer reach. If you are going to be using it for general shooting (without the zoom) the image quality will be very close but for zooming, the Canon really is a powerhouse so it depends on how you use it.
Hey, what settings do you use?
Pretty much auto !
@ and what mode do you use? P? I want to take pictures of japan but also myself, what mode do you reccomend?
Hey yes I use "P" mode. The problem with full auto is you can't set the focus to center so the camera decides what to focus on and often its wrong. When you set the camera to P, in the menu just set the focus to center focus. That's how I have been using the camera and it works well.

Thank you !
thinking still about this pocketable and Lumix FZ300? maybe a comparison? if already done, just ignore :D
They really are very different. The 300 will definitely give you better image quality. Its a full size camera with a viewfinder and a longer zoom constant aperture 2.8 Its definitely a more souped up camera!
@@techtoremember8096 plus FZ300 is way cheaper too, :D got my answer already for a novice
Which one is better, SX740 HS or G7X Mark II? I’ve been thinking about which one should I get.
They are both very different. People get the SX740 primarily for the long zoom. It has a small sensor and won't do well in lower light situations. Gets grainy quickly. The G7Mark 2 is more of an all around camera, larger sensor, better photos but way less of a zoom so depends on your application.
@@techtoremember8096 Big thanks for sharing your thoughts! ☺️
Did you cover the stereo audio capability of this camera?
There are samples of music at an outdoor concert yes
@@techtoremember8096 I"m referring to internal camera settings that allow for stereo recording or mono recording.
@alessandromachi1010 oh ok No I had it set to stereo where I think most peiple would want it Why would you want mono can I ask ?
@@techtoremember8096 I was curious why there were two or audio options, and I wanted to know why.
@@techtoremember8096 I felt this part of your presentation missed a key point. The lens becomes irrelevant in an outdoor or indoor concert, what matters most is where is the best sound recording position, once that position is established, then the zoom lens matters.
can you say how to take those black and white grainy photos, please?
its just a setting in the camera .very easy to select.
@@techtoremember8096which setting?
Just wish they had this with usb-c
5:00 didn't he say it has
2:30 looks like micro USB
@@flat-earther its micro
I have this camera but it doesnt have USB C, just microUSB, so same for you?
yes its an older camera so it has the micro
Good camera, but Sony hx99 is more advance and almost the same focal lenght. Good review!
Thank you ! I had the 99 a few years ago I reviewed the canon because it’s still being sold as the 99 is discontinued but I may review that one soon !
@@techtoremember8096 would love a review of the hx99 - they still sell it in the UK sony shops :)
@@techtoremember8096 cant decide between this canon and the sonyhx99... ive been told the canon takes more colourful images
Honest and curious question:
I am a content creator here on youtube filming my keyboard covers using my smartphone.
Unless you are using the zoom, then I would say no, its not a huge upgrade from a phone.
Its a shame canon quite making them. This is the camera that got me into photography. Point and shoot cameras need to stay around.
New stock is due out soon
I have not seen this camera on canons website
hi noob question here. can we change the area of focus point or it fixed at the center?
Thats a good question. There are only some basic focus modes. Full auto which i don't recommend because you don't know what it will focus on. Center AF, tracking and manual. If you want to focus on something that isn't in the center, you have to point the camera a the subject with the center box over it, half press the shutter then move the camera to your desired position so that essentially the corner will be in focus. You can't specify a focus box in the corner. Or you could manually focus it.
@@techtoremember8096 i see. that's a bummer.🥲
ive had this for 3 years, the main hing is telephoto, if you never zoom, not much point....lack of viewfinder only affects bright daytime....zoom is not good at night, smartphone photos are much better for indoor shots, the pixel 7 pro which is much cheaper than this camera is much better at everything up to 5x..... the tilt show mode is good, its awfull and grainy at lowlight...the hdmi isnt clean output so if you use hdmi usb capture to computer, you may get controls....no usb webcam mode. you need recent smartphone to get bluetooth geotagging using canon app....
How does this camera compare (picture quality) to smartphone cameras of the same price range?
Well many of the cell phone cameras are different. I think in good light they will be similar but the difference with the SX740 is the optical zoom ability which is an advantage over cell phones.
How do l delete photos plz help
Askk google... Find online manual PDF file.. for This Camera. Come on.. Not so difficult...
I don't know why you guys are making videos on old models.
Please guide people with new Canon models
Hello, it is an older model but still currently being sold and very popular. There are fewer and fewer models of these available so there is a big interest in these small all in one point and shoots. Newer models will be reviewed as well however.
New models? Where...the point and shoot segment is basically stagnant. Any new models of any make are going to have meaningless petty so-called improvements.
take the ZV1 and the ZV1 II. Just a rehash and reintroduced to sell more hype. Not much difference to review. Canon is basically putting all their effort into making the R1 a big thing. They have all but abandoned the point and shoot.
Well said
