  • Ever wondered how to set up a canon G7x Mark 2 and what settings are best to use? or how to get the best results from the G7x mkII ? I have been using the G7x Mark 2 as a pocket camera for the last 6 years. I am a professional photographer based in the UK and cover all kinds of different assignments. In this video I talk about how I use this camera on my assignments and go through the settings and set up I use with the Canon G7x Mark 2 for both stills and video.
    Thanks for watching. RR 2023

    I've had this camera for almost six years and this was extremely enlightening. Been using it to shoot my social media videos for music and I'm slowly realizing I haven't been using it to it's full extent. I need to learn more about exposure, aperture, color profiles to get the best out of my videos. Thanks for this!

    This is incredibly useful info for me! I was gifted this camera and I’m learning how to use it. I’d like to learn professional photography but don’t have the budget for a big DSLR at the moment. I’m learning this little G7x can do way more than I thought!

      I’m happy you found something useful here.. The G7x is really rather amazing considering a it’s small size. Easy to use point and shoot or you can deep dive right into full creative mode! Great thing to learn with.. the main huge thing to remember is that it’s the pictures that matter. The camera is just a tool. Thanks for your comment. Best wishes. RR

    I bought the G7xii a few years back and was blown away by how good it was... until I went on holiday last year and my wife's new iphone seemed to take a better photo at most occasions, particularly sunset with all its processor processing. Xmas was another one, the G7x seemed to struggle with focusing in Av with a tree behind it but frustratingly as soon as I used one of the SCN functions it took a brilliant photo! So frustrating sometimes, I contemplated forking out for a Fuji XT5!

      well these new iphones keep getting better and better! honeslty i thinkw e are ta a place where if your intenion is to capture family moments then a recent smart phones will do as good a job as pretty much any other camera and its always with you. on balance though I do wonder if shooting old fashioned film might be the best way to record out families. shoot less.. make some nice prints. stick them in an album.. perfect and they last for a really long time! Ive simplified a lot to where my main go to always on my side camera is the S23 Ultra. It fits in my pocket, and when on the road, don't have to worry about being a theft target. I shoot raw for my good shots, it doesn't over process, or sharpen, while allowing decent editing for great contrast and colors. Very quick to start up right out of the pocket.

    Safety shift kicks in in either AV or TV modes. Let's say you are in AV mode, at ISO 100 (minimum possible) and shutter speed of 1/8000, which is the max, but you set the aperture to f1.4. Let's say with these settings your image would be 2 stops over exposed. Instead of your camera taking this badly exposed image, safety shift overrides the set aperture setting to f2.8, thus giving you the correct exposure.

    The one thing really I wish I could customize on the G7x is the zoom rocker. A customizable rocker switch is every bit as useful as a dial. While it'd be great to click through aperture or ISO values, I'd settle for being able to at least change stepless zoom into stepped zoom (24/28/35/50/85/100) on the rocker. I greatly prefer that zoom method, so I've got to use my control ring for that.

    I got this camera recently to replace my aging G15. I watched this video after I had already done some work with it and went through the settings and compared to what I use in the G15. So while this is a good video I already had most of these settings. They're pretty basic and you may want to get into custom set which I need time to do. This camera can take really good photos under the right circumstances. However there are times when for whatever reason it doesn't focus right. Doesn't focus as well as the G15. But when it's in focus can be great shot. Also use a wrist strap unless you want an accident with your $600 camera. I don't use a bag but a Lowepro Tahoe CS20 on the belt and in general and that's great.

    I had it once but it broke on me... still thinking of getting it again. This is a REALLY good camera if you know how to handle it properly. You can easily trick people when you present the finished picture by claiming it was taken with a DSLR. Personally I also have an old 7D and I can say (without too intense pixel peeping) that the final snap is pretty much same quality almost.

    Nice little cam and interesting menu functions. It has a good lens 1.8-2.8. Many Vlogers on RUclips use it cause it has the 180 degree flip screen. The only bad thing is that it doesn't have an APS-C sensor. Therefore I would rather go for the Canon M-series which costs just 100 dollars more (maybe used even cheaper then the G7X). Hi, sold this camera to a friend, it's a canon g7x mark lI, when she first got the camera she put the sd card in the wrong way and had ripped it out to remove it. my guess is that she damaged the sd card slot in the camera because when she would go to take a photo with the sd card in correctly, she'd get a "sd card locked" error message. I had her buy a new sd card and the same thing. again, i'm thinking the inside of sd card slot is broken. i have a photo of the inside for reference. the camera is in pa rn but i can have it shipped back if needed.

    Hello i have a canon 80d. With i first got it the pictures were sharp and good! I wanted to learn about the settings and messed with it.. I’ve watched videos and changed the settings back and it doesn’t look sharp anymore. Idk what to do.. it’s so upsetting because it makes me not enjoy shooting anymore.

    • @RoyRiley
      @RoyRiley  Год назад

      Sorry to hear of your troubles! The 80d is an amazing camera but it will require time to understand and learn. Often the path to success can be a challenging one and sometimes we have to get worse at something in order to get better.. my advice would be to spend a few hours learning about exposure, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and How they all relate to each other. Try Googling “exposure triangle in photography” there are plenty of resources out there. Once you understand this, the settings you choose will be much more specific for your needs and your photography will improve! Really it is this understanding and your unique vision that is far more important than what camera you have. Stick with it and do not dispair! Everyone goes through what you are experiencing. It’s just a case of learning and understanding and then you will pop through the other side into a world where you can make any camera sing. Hope this helps! RR

    • @RoyRiley
      @RoyRiley  Год назад

      Thanks Matt. what a lovely thing to do.. I am green with envy! To be honest photographing a wonder like the falls at night is going to be a challenge.. my advice would be to take a tripod of some sort. you will need to find the right compromise between size, weight and function. I would take a full size tripod if possible.. To shoot the actual falls you will need to keep the camera very still because the low light will mean you will have to shoot at a long exposure.. with a good tripod you can keep the iso low (maybe 400) let the camera take care of the exposure and expect the shutter to stay open for a good few seconds maybe longer.. tweak on manual if you so wish.. it will blur the water but keep everything else sharp. If you wish to freeze action then you will need a much higher iso, (3200) shoot a wide open aperture and try to get a fast enough shutter speed to avoid shake.. fill in flash may be an option..Hope this helps.. Wishing you and your wife a successful mission. RR

I'm a great fan of long exposure photography, I already know that the aperture goes to f11 but in some situations of very amount of light it might not be enough for long exposures but the fact that has the nd filter input can also help and reduce more light and compensate am I right? Cheers

    • @RoyRiley

      Av = the photographer chooses the aperture and the camera will automatically choose the correct shutter speed. P and Auto both are different versions of the camera doing all the thinking. Google “the exposure triangle” for more knowledge. I would choose Av or manual but you have to be able to understand what this means. Otherwise just go with P or Auto

    • @RoyRiley
      @RoyRiley  8 месяцев назад +1

      in photography to throw the background out of focus there are three things to consider. use the longest lens you can. Use the widest aperture you can and choose a suitable background and make it far away! oh and to place your subject as close to the camera as possible.. so for example a runner in a park shot at 100mm with an aperture of f2.8 with some nice trees 200 metres away.. the background will be out of focus.. in a gym shooting with a wide angle lens at f8 and a messy wall 1 metre behind.. the background will not be out of focus..you can expand and alter as you wish.. the exception to this rule is the digital ninja AI scnizzle that is in iphones and some image editing programs where whatever you wish is possible but might look a bit false and shit if used badly.. hope this helps

      Every new phone gets a little better and now in 2024 I would say that smart phones have got arguably as good if not better than many normal cameras. However there are so many variables that I guess it’s up to each individual person to choose what’s right for them. Certainly the new iPhones can punch as hard as pretty much anything else.. you are right the onboard flash on these little compacts does achieve a different look.

      @@RoyRiley thanks for responding! I got into the g7x after I found one in my girlfriends draw, turns out she's out one the entire time we've been together and she's never used it. It's a very capable phone and I'm hoping to use it to get back into photography (B in photography gcse decades ago that's right), I found the colours are almost identical on both cameras, the s24 was far better in low light conditions and unsurprisingly the detail in zoomed in photos. I'm going to carry both on my next walk and take some landscape photos to compare, but having a physical device that let's you adjust the settings manually is much easier on the g7x compared to an all touchscreen. I am blown away by the s24 ultra to be honest.
      Keeping in mind I'm not a pro and far from a decent amateur, what would the bigger lense on the g7x bring that could 1-up the new phone cameras?

      I forgot to mention, but it's funny this g7x has quite a big reputation in the Instagram /TikTok scene, and I always wondered why in particular. And maybe if it's really competent at videos more so than others?

      @@orbita1 haha! I have no idea why the TikTok people got into this little camera.. I do not understand much about that platform to be honest! So the real truth is that the camera is just a camera. Once we get to the point of accepting that all of these devices are “good enough” to produce a half decent print.. (I think we are probably at that point now in 2024 where pretty much any camera or phone is capable of knocking out a 10 x 8) then it becomes so so so much more about what is in front of the camera and who is behind it. What I’m trying to say is don’t worry too much about what camera you are using.. it’s different if your shooting for a living because your home and feeding the children become dependent upon not missing a picture!
