    Blackshields are pure distilled “Your Dudes” in army form. It’s also cool that there’s now an army that rewards/doesn’t punish players who prefer to use the generic legion units over the unique legion-specific options.
    Now to fight the urge to build another psyker astartes army…

    I do miss this kind of rules flexibility and whackiness in 40k.
    Like I remember waaaay back in 4th Edition (this was I think the 3rd edition Guard codex though) - you could do fun and odd stuff like give the entire army carapace armor, because they were from a wealthy or industrial world. Or give them melee weapons and pistols instead of rifles because they were from a feral world.
    Heck I even was good with the 9th edition way of 'choose faction, choose subfaction; often with some sort of 'make your own' option' thing.
    It's neat to see that it still lives on somewhere at least.

    • @Mugdorna
      @Mugdorna 4 месяца назад +6

      My son used those rules for his IG army.
      I recall 3rd Edition when your DIY chapter could choose a parent legion and get a bonus based on this.
      My TearBringers were Salamander geneseed, thus they has -1 initiative but cheaper Terminator/Artificer armour.

      Ditch GW rules and do it anyway. The modern game is being taken in a very different direction - if you want narrative rules and customisation options you will need to use 3rd party or house rules. Bit of a bummer if you don't have a regular play group, but if you do the freedom it gives you is amazing.

    • @erih2934
      @erih2934 4 месяца назад +12

      @@samhunter1205 Absolutetly agree. I stopped following the insane release cycle and constantly changing rules and instead went homebrew coming 10th with some old rules, war gear, rebalanced the units we use and done. As long as those at the table have fun who cares what the 'current' flavour of the month rulebook says.

    • @samhunter1205
      @samhunter1205 4 месяца назад

      @@erih2934 absolutely, my group do almost exactly the same thing. It is so liberating to be free of the GW rules churn. I think we all began to dread new.codex day, wondering if our forge world units would even be legal and if our favourite regular units would arbitrarily be consigned to the shelf for an entire edition. That security alone is great, but when you can actually convert your own unique units and agree rules for them it gets really special. I am currently working on a homebrew unique unit of Aspect Warriors while a friend has converted some loyal alpha legion, recently revived from crysosleep straight from the heresy era.

    When I first started 40K (and had no understanding of lore) I wrote up my own homebrew Marine chapter called the Iron Suppressors whose Primarch landed on a dormant tomb world and quickly learned how to engineer and replicate its many weapons. When the Emperor arrived and gave him his legion, they were all equipped with fancy new Necron-based weapons. As I became more well versed in the world of 40K I realized this was impossible to replicate on the tabletop and contradicted numerous lore points so I abandoned it made a new chapter called the Marines Hazardous.
    But now, with these new Blackshield rules? The Iron Suppressors are back!

    Yep, if I were to play any WH, I think I'd pick up Blackshields. I just love coming up with your own faction. My first thought was Legacy of Nikea + Taint of the Xenos, for a warband that decided that "burn the witch" is dumb, ban on reverse-engineering superior tech is dumb, so the up and left to Start Their Own (tm). No idea how this would play, but I have a sense it wouldbe a very swingy army that either blows the opponent to tiny bits, or blows itself up to tiny bits. So, fun!

    "Blackshields" used to confuse me as a term, because the books talk about all these separatist factions & splinter groups, but most of them only refer to Space Marine ones. But then others talk about Blackshield Knight Houses and Titan Legions, so I don't know if it's meant to be a generic term or not. ...so I just refer to any separatist forces in 30k as Blackshields and no-one's corrected me yet!

    You could use these rules pretty handily to make those "undead Astartes", reanimated using the Keys of Hel (infamously seen during the Xana Incursion). I'm thinking either The Broken Helix or The Flesh is Weak (to denote their loss of self, reduced to hardy drones), and The Eternal Vendetta or An Eternity of War (to denote that the only thing they remember is how to hate).
    Kitbash them with a bunch of zombie/skeleton/cyborg heads, missing or cyberized limbs, pale skin/bone, scratch and nick their armor, and paint them in a variety of legion colors.

    This. THIS! This is frakkin' great! THIS is the 40k I remember. I know I'm not the only one who wanted to use my extra Eldar bits to build out some marines. Or vice versa; malnourished, tweaker marines in Eldar armour with MK 5 and beaky helms, Dark Angel and World Eaters load outs. Brilliant sir! I'm going to watch the Shattered Legion video now.
    After getting back into 40k with a couple combat patrols and eeking my way to a 2k Eldar army, I bought a heap of 30k treasures and digging on the narrative vibe of home brew possibilities. Like the board opens with a Cerastus Knight in the middle and proceeds to randomly comes to life and attack units from both sides because Weird-Hammer is what I remember as the most fun. Unbalanced, quirky and partially home-brewed rules were awesome even when you technically lost. Kinda like old school D&D. I never had so much fun repeatedly dying.
    Keep up the great content and I'll keep watching. Thank you.

    • @MidwestMountainMan
      @MidwestMountainMan 4 месяца назад

      Depends what you mean by "hard"! Rule-wise, most of the Blackshield options are easier than the Legions, but Horus Heresy is a harder game to get into than regular 40k.
      If you mean collecting the models, this is probably the easiest HH army to collect since you can grab whatever HH (and even some 40k) space marines you can find and mash them all together.
      Painting-wise, you can paint then however you want.
      If you're new to wargaming entirely, I'd recommend playing One Page Rules first with your marines (there's a "Civil War Heresy" community army book that has rules for HH minis) before playing HH unless you are very good at absorbing large rulebooks.
