    I have to admit that I am kinda warming to the Shattered Legions rules. The rules are still clunky but these do feel pretty flavourful. With practice, cheat sheets and sensible choices, this could possibly work in event play.

      @@ImrahilToChaos Definitely, if you push the system to the limits. 3 legion choices, Greyshields, 3 legions in one unit, that kind of thing. It's easy to see how the paperwork make it unwieldy, I don't dispute that. I'm simply saying that with the aforementioned stipulations, I could see how it might just work. Didn't say it was perfect. Didn't even say the rules were good, I'm just warming to them.

      @@Zabzim I suppose if I deigned to play at an event, it would be a challenge and a near-unique experience for my opponents and I. The lists both play very differently from each other and the core list. The fluidity with which a unit's role can change under the Shattered Legions rules can make even decisions regarding casualties a tactical consideration.
      Am I planning on doing so? No. Am I saying that it would be a purely good experience? No. I'm simply saying that the list does offer something unlike anything else in 30k.

      @@Capt.DanInJapan Well you would also loose pretty quickly. As the blackshield rules that are in the book are in my mind a 100 times better as they do something you rarely get in Horus Heresy and that’s customisation. Like I don’t like moral checks, so my blackshields simply don’t take them.

      Yeah while I think it's possible to ramp up the complexity and get ridiculous, you can also set yourself up very reasonably with smart list building and some prep like a cheat sheet and tokens. It's not as if you /have/ to flip flop what abilities your units have, after all. Just remove them in a balanced way down to the last couple of models.

      The fact that some of the flaws can straight up break certain units (Nightlords single-model units like a lone character or a dread NOT BEING ABLE TO CHARGE would be an obvious one) and the PER-FUCKING-PHASE requirement to check and apply Majority/Minority traits is a load of unnecessary bullshit I'm not sure anyone needs in their life.

      @Zabzim 7 месяцев назад +1

      Well they have hands down the better rules. Some of them are quite busted although you can only take 2 so the killa combination sadly can’t be used. Apparently their overall flaw is that they’re both traitor and loyalist and so other legions don’t like them as much. But that not really a downside when you have rules like “only in death does duty end” which gives them the whole demon leadership where they auto pass leadership checks but take 3D wounds instead (also they’re not worth kill points) and clones which give the usual crappy feel no pain, -1 to initiative and leadership but more importantly makes them immune to pinning so you can take massive 20 man blocks of troops safe in the knowledge the enemy can’t do shitting leadership shenanigans because you’re straight up immune!

    A triple legion squad might have some good benefits. If you start with a good shooting legion as the inital majority, then have the middle legion good at charging or melee. The squad starts having good shooting rolls, but when damaged by a close by enemy, they switch into melee mode and charge the enemy to butcher them. All while keeping the minority's consistently good perk and flaw with a couple of guys in the back of the squad. Thanks for the video.

    From a game play perspective, I see how this all fits together and - assuming one is comfortable with the complexity, which will vary from person to person - seems like it would work fairly well.
    From a "does this make any kind of sense in real military terms" perspective, this is suffereing from 40K and HH's teeny tiny scale. I feel like most "shattered Legions" forces in the actual war would have been groups of platoons and companies banding together to form a larger force - and those groups would probably not have stopped and said "okay, let's mix-and-match all our troops." Much more likely, in my opinion, is that a Shattered Legion would have attempted to preserve its component subunits as much as possible. I can bend my brain around a scratch force that ended up with two or three Legions' units being grouped up into a company, but the platoons would have probably remained heterogenous; and while I could imagine a pair of understrength platoons being deployed together as a single platoon-strength fore, the individual squads would still be made of the people they were used to fighting with.
    I suppose one can create a backstory of smal groups of indivuduals banding together after the Istvan massacre or some similar catastrophe, and then being used to working together by the time the found more such groups, but this would be very rare I think.
    So, in short: I like the rules but the fluff doesn't fit for me.

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  7 месяцев назад +5

      Bear in mind that most forces on the table are barely a real life platoon. 40-50 people.
      In that situation the regrouping is more to do with equipment. If you have two raven guard terminators and three iron hands ones they're more effective as a squad than as individuals. Same for heavy weapon troopers, etc.

    Hm. When I first heard they were finally bringing back Shattered Legions, I was rather pleased! But by the time this came out, I have learned that Allying in other Legions is practically free and thus having a mixed force is not that hard and much simpler.
    But I do appreciate how flavorful this is. This is definitely pushing towards an extreme on the "Crunchy old school war game" feel, feeling more like the book keeping in Necromunda or Mordheim. Which means it certainly can work, but yeah, will need some...prep time. I can see the appeal, though I find it funny that simply just allying in a few legions is much more straight forward. Guess you just have to balance what you want with what you are willing to put up with! But I do look forward to seeing these wild armies on the table, at least from a hobby perspective.

    Preparation is key here:
    Take a piece of paper and write down all rule combination that may end up in a game. Done!

    • @ImrahilToChaos
      @ImrahilToChaos 7 месяцев назад +2

      You need to do this for between fifty and eighty marines broken up into between four and eight squads depending on most lists. People who keep saying that it’s easy are talking about it like it’s one squad. You need to track EVERY squad at all times, and the fluctuations mean that you’re always double checking numbers.
      It’s not always going to be a case where one or two models are removed and you can remove them all evenly, you have to mark every squad constantly and track if it gains or loses a specific majority. No other army requires you to track that sort of thing for every one of your infantry units.
