I have a theory about Papu and Rangi: they are the original names of Akamai and Wairhua, the Toa Kaita.
If Papu and Rangi were the gods of earth and sky in Maori culture then the Toa Kaita certainly mirrors that. Tahu, Pohatu and Onua combine to become Akamai. Powers of Fire/lava, Stone and Earth = power of quake. Gali, Kopaka and Lewa combine to become Wairhua. Powers of Water, Ice and Air = power of storm.

Out of all of these, I feel like Ahkmou as a Toa of Shadow is the real #1. That would have been so awesome.
When I first found that out, I was crushed by disappointment in the fact that it never came to be.
Why did they scrap it? It gives us something familiar - a Toa - but would surprise us by making it evil. That kind of contrast is one way to draw people into a new set. Furthermore, it would be a Toa vs Toa plot with focus, rather than the side-plots of Nidhiki and Tuyet and whatever other Toa became "evil". The overall story would've been more consistent, considering that he was a fairly notable character in the Metru Nui and Mata Nui arcs but fell off the face of the plot after that. And finally, it means that he could've become a real Turaga when Teridax got him to "rule" over Metru Nui.
@@k-leb4671 to be fair, we did get Takanuva's set. For the story it's a shame, but setwise we basically got a toa of shadow (and light). I wouldn't be surprised if Takanuva was what was left of the Ahkmou toa concept
@@vaimantobe3034 Yeah I'm pretty sure 2008 Takanuva was the compromise for the Ahkmou thing not pulling through. They probably had a prototype model that wasn't too different.
Well, i'm sorry i have to say this but i'm kinda glad we never got Ahkmou as the Toa of Shadow because it would have been really unappealing in my opinion.
from what I've heard the idea was never seriously considered, they threw it around for a short time but never put any real thought into making it happen.
I have some headcanon for this 7th Tribe.
Because they seem to worship Makuta Teridax, it may be that it's a tribe of Shadow Matoran. It could be explained in-universe that these were the Matoran that the Toa Metru couldn't save and thus fell into the hands of Teridax after his escape from his protodermis prison. In a similar way as the Shadow Matoran of the Phantoka line, Teridax drained these Matoran of their inner light, turning them into what he dubbed Kra-Matoran (Kra being the official prefix for the element of Shadow), and led them to found the tribe of Kra-Koro.
Ahkmou would, in turn, be a spy for the Kra-Matoran, working behind the scenes to stop the Toa Mata in any way he could. This would eventually lead to him becoming a Toa of Shadow and, perhaps, a Turaga of Shadow after Teridax' takeover of the Matoran Universe?
Dark Pope Ahkmou sounds like a great idea. If they didn't jump all over the place with the story it might have been a really nice idea. I'm all for a sustained villain character with a proper arc that isn't just the Devil.
and maybe a Sammy Lawrence type character that want to appease Terry by sacrificing some Matorans to him

Good point, but honestly I'd prefer that they scrap Fenrakk to at least give the Bahrag good forms.

Don't know if anyone else remembers this, but after BIONICLE ended a few years ago, Greg Farshtey wrote a couple short story serials that took place after the Battle of Bara Magna, called "The Powers That Be" and "The Yesterday Quest". A concept of one of these serials was that of a character named Marendar, a robotic weapon of some sort created by the Great Beings long ago to destroy the Toa should they ever turn against the Matoran. While the concept did not go unused, unfortunately the serials were never finished, and Marendar was only mentioned and described in a single scene. So I guess you could look at this as somewhat of an "unused concept", considering it was never entirely delved into.

I remember that, I thought'd it would've been awesome to have all the Toa from every gen having to fight off an unstoppable killer robot. I know in the story the robot was set to activate if a large number of Toa (what the Great Beings thought would be an invasion force) ever came to Bara Magna.
Gamer Genesis That's exactly what I wanted to. It would've been awesome! I loved the original finale with Mata Nui facing off with Teridax, but I felt that really rendered the other characters useless in a sense considering they were thousands of feet on the ground below. Having them fight a character like Marendar, who is as powerful as he has been described, would be a fantastic finale.

Well the reason for that is because the final fight was sadly rushed due to Lego wanting to end the Bionicle series fast to make way for their stupid Hero Factory line.
I really wish those two stories were finished.

Of all the concepts, Ahkmou should have become that shadow toa. In fact, Ahkmou should have gotten a larger role in the story, period. It would have been awesome to see him and Takanuva fight, or even better yet, if Ahkmou had antagonized the Toa Nuva during their quests for the Masks of Power. Maybe it could have been he who hid the Masks of Power in the first place and set the traps. Perhaps he could have been the entity the Nuva faced in either the first book or in MNOG when they went below to confront Makuta. Heck, he could have aided the Bohrok and the Kal instead of just making infected Kohlii balls. There was a place for a servant of Makuta in the story, and my mind enjoys wandering where it all could have gone.

I don't remember where I heard this but apparently they never actually seriously considered the idea of ahkmou being the shadow toa, they threw the idea around a bit but it never got much further than that.
Top unused concept: inika having Metru heads
In terms of design rather than personality, I always felt that Pohatu should be portrayed as the youngest. When I first saw Pohatu in his original Toa Mata form, everything about him, the way he’s built, the fact that he kicks stones like soccer balls, even the design of the Kakama just gave me late teenager vibes. But that’s just me.
Ever since my first time playing MNOG, I always thought something was up with Ahkmou. He really deserved a larger role as the more relatable villain character.

The ones that hurt the most for me from least to greatest:
#8 - Would have given away the Metru Nui secret island twist too early (or at least would have detracted a lot from the twist).
#7 - I like how it worked out in the story that MU inhabitants didn't really age (although that should have been completely different with Bara Magna inhabitants) so I'm pretty glad this got scraped.
#4 - Maybe the asthetics and appearances of the '08 Toa would have worked better for the Toa Mahri, that's probably why they look so mismatched as the Toa Nuva. Their appearance absolutely could have been handled better but I think it was still nice to see them back in action. I'm also glad '08 didn't end up being stretched out over several years; I feel like it would have been an unnecessary delay.
#10 - Cool concept but it really doesn't add much beside the Bohrok parallel.
#1 - This is literally the only time I've heard of Papu and Rangi. I've played through MNOG but it still just flew by me and I completely forgot about it. Would have added some interesting backstory, though.
#9 - The Bohrok queens being giant spiders would have been a far more intimidating foe than what they ended up being but at least we got it as an alternate model.
#5 - Invasion has loads of cool concepts and they would have been nice to have, but I feel like it would have been a sort of semi-filler book like Darkness Below.
#3 - For a while now I thought it would have been cool to see a sort of delusional cult of Matoran. I think that would have added a bit of depth to the lore and I find it kind of strange that Ahkmou was the only Matoran to ever be corrupted like that. Maybe not in '01 but at least eventually.
#6 - It would have been so awesome to see a shadow Toa. It had already been an unused concept in LOMN and its disappointing that it never came to fruition.
#2 - This... just... what we could have gotten... what could have been: new characters, new places, new sets, new molds, new concepts... I know the Bara Magna saga wasn't (and still isn't to some extent) particularly favored among Bionicle fans, but it really felt like a breath of fresh air after so many years of stale colors. Sure, the 5th and 6th films wouldn't have been that great at all, probably would have been even worse than LRB, but it would have been better than what we got in 2010. We would have seen the Elemental Lords, met new Glatorian and Agori, traveled through the Valley of the Maze and gone to Bota Magna and so much more.
Instead of a reboot, Lego should have just continued the story, perhaps maybe one day we will get that
Pyro INC as ttv discussed in a podcast they did a few years ago, the reason why it was a reboot was so newer fans could follow the story easier, although a continuation would've been awesome!
I'm sorry but they should not continued the story because it won't work, i feel like making reboot of Bionicle is just fine for me. The only con that the reboot has is that it was cancelled due to low sales, it would have been better if the reboot got one more wave for 2017 but sadly it never happened... You know, it would have been far worst if Cartoon Network handle Bionicle and made a Bionicle show with unfunny humor and makes fun of Bionicle and also disrespects to fans of both Bionicle G1 and G2 as well?

my favourite 'unused' concept would be Makuta Teridax's rather, well, different portrayal in The Mask of Light as discussed in your Bionicle Autopsy video about Makuta.
I also would have enjoyed 2010-2011.

I actually wish that BIONICLE stars had just had better sets. I really liked the story serials and would hate a world without a lot of the scenes from that.

Over different sources of media, different things seem to happen at the same time. For example, in the 2007 Mahri short film, the whole mission lasts probably less than a day. but in the books and comics, it lasts much longer than that.
This would be a great topic, showing how sometimes the Bionicle story gets a bit cluttured and mixed up over different sources.
Yes, this. Definitely this. I distinctly remember Matoro dying more than once. Or at least, being revived in one of these instances, in the books.
But of course, this would lead to the necessitation of Bionicle fans having critical thinking skills, or brains to begin with. I certainly dropped Bionicle after the Karzahni incident, where they made a big green boogeyman with legs and the Toa-Metru as Matoran fighting it and called it canon. It completely flies in the face of everything that's ever been established with those characters, so using their names with it is just pointless. That green thing is not the Karzahni.
This would be like if they brought back Keetongu, except he's blue and has four eyes and spider legs and was retconned to be the progenitor of the Visorak species. That golden cyclopean ascetic we all know and love for his near-lack of English skills? He's actually a good Bohrok who was NAMED after the Visorak lord. Because screw canon, our interns are busy not knowing anything about Bionicle.
How about what Bionicle was going to be?
What was it, the Dolls of VooDoo Island, with Claw, Fang, Hook, Talon and others. They were going to be more like a group of primitive tribals.
Really wish that Ahkmou had received his Shadow Toa treatment in set-form... Oh well.

The concept of Papu and Rangi sounds odd anyway... How could they have founded Ta-Koro? That was Vakama's job, in Maze of Shadows.

BionBios I agree with that. Vakama made up a tragic story about a lava surfer who died doing what he loved so Jaller would know that his mask was important. Making up founders for the village wouldn't be too out of character for him.
I always had a theory that the Makuta Icarax set was meant to be Ahkmou at one time, since we had a titan Takanuva. If the Mahri were supposed to originally take to the skies, then maybe that explains why Tahu, Gali, and Onua's Mistika incarnations look so odd, since they may have originally intended to be Jaller, Hahli, and Nuparau.
This may also explain the Phantoka versions of Pohatu and Lewa's masks look more like a redesigned regular Kakama and Miru respectively, while Kopaka's is like a redesigned Akaku Nuva (though oddly looking more like a great Matatu).
Yeah Phantoka Tahu has a LOT of similarities with Mahri Jaller. It all makes sense now.
This list is pretty darn awesome. For me personally though, I would have really liked to see the Elemental Lords and ESPECIALLY the Biomehanical Dinosaur-Esque creatures from Bota Magna. Great video overall though! You guys never fail to disappoint me.. Unity!

Think I know why the 2008 toa were different from their original designs from 2003. LEGO had already made the sets based off the toa mahri, but since the plans changed, LEGO had no time to start from scratch so they slapped the toa Nuva’s names on these sets. This why the mistika And phantoka look strangely similar to the Inika/ Mahri
I'm still kinda bummed about the final few years and sets they had planned for the finale of bionicle. I was really looking towards the dino themed sets and possibly even the great beings. I felt like the stars line was a very poor sendoff for bionicle. If they were to go out like the star sets they should have been titan level like sets with intricate and incredible builds, not 10 to 15 piece matoran size sets. I understand why bit it still frustrates me to thus day how rushed the finale was. 😑

I would have LOVED to see Ahkmou have a larger role, and the mere concept of a toa of shadow has always intrigued me.

That Toa of Shadows looked awesome.
I feel like if they can find a way to replace or reincarnate Matoro, the Inika/Mahri would be amazing as an arc, because the main series (2001-2009/2010) only had 3 true generations of Toa, or at least 3 teams, not counting the Mata-Nuva-Phantoka/Mistika transformations, the Metru-Hordika transformation, the Inika-Mahri transformation, or the Glatorian arc. I feel like if they can make it work, it will greatly increase sales, or do a side stars-like series. Just an idea.

In Maori mythology Papa Tuanuku and Rangi are the (Papa) Earth mother and (Ranginui) Sky father. They were in love which meant anyone in between would be squashed so a majority of their children tried to split them apart. They were failing until Tāne Mahuta split them apart a different way ( with his legs ) . Now Tane Mahuta is a real Kauri tree located in Waipoua Forest in NZ (Aotearoa) . Also due to the fact their parents had been split Tāwhiri Matea ( God of Winds), in rage, ripped out his own eyes and threw them to the sky which is called Mata ariki or Matariki ( Mata Ariki means Eyes of God. And Matariki means Little Eyes). Also could mean Great Eye. Like how Mata Nui means Great Spirit. I'm from NZ

Where can I find out more about the scrapped bionicle 2010-11 sets?
Here's what I know.
One wave, some of the characters would be the Element Lords from the serials. Another of the waves would be Bionicle DINOSAURS in a lost part of Bara Magna.
I also heard that the story would continue to be based around the Glatorian, and one years story would have a lot to do with the maze on a Skrall shield. Along with that, I heard a rumor that there would be a new member of Mata Nui's group, who was a Skrall.
That's all I have. It sounds interesting.

I am mainly interested in the unfinished serials, the unreleased Legends book, and especially the original plan for the post-2009 years.
I also thought that the production name of AFTERMAN has some cool concepts and ideas that could have gone along with it.
so oddly in the 2006 download version of Mata Nui Online Game, the reference to Papu and Rangi has been changed to simply "someone", which is just as confusing

3:00 I have one of the old booklets that came with the Bionicle card game from 2001, and it said that Lewa was the youngest and that Tahu was the oldest, possibly being older than the planet or stars (I forget which).
the mahri and barraki comic series was one of my faves , i remember reading them thoroughly, it started to decline after the mahri if you ask me

We should help TTV come up with new Top 10 ideas. I personally cant think of any because of my severe lack of creativity, which also explains my lack of MOCs, but we need to present some inspiration to this collection because I'm sure we all like it :D

I've always wondered this, but never asked before. What's the song you use in this video, along with many of your other vids? Is it from an actual Bionicle related thing like a website or game, or is it completely custom made just for this channel?
I'm pretty sure the music on thic channel is mostly made by Var, and a few other members, Takuma I think.

personaly I think the greatest unused bionicle concept has to be the bionicle legends invasion book. I recently read through the bionicle 2007 line of books and I enjoyed it. But i think it was a bit fast pased a bit more character development towards the barraki and other new characters such as hydraxonn definetly could have been used. Plus we didn't get to see them for very long wich i think is sad because i realy liked all the new characters. also i was kinda dissapointed in the fact that there was no apearence of Lesovikk or Karzahni . And I think this book would have been a perfect solution to that. the concepts of this book sound realy great. Thats why i think that this is the greatest unused bionicle concept. However the scrapping of the 2010-2011 storyline trail very closely behind. But thats just my opinion

Man, I had the lava stage music from Maze of Shadows stuck in my head earlier today at work. It's been over a decade since I even touched the game, but I remember it fondly.

A Toa team with members having significant differences in age would be interesting, but I like the Mata being the same. That could've worked for the Mahri, Kongu and Hewkii had the look of grizzled old war vets.

With that last one, I'm pretty sure Vakama founded Ta-Koro in maze of shadows (or one of those adventure books). So those other names don't fit in with cannon :(
I would've liked a Shadow Toa Ahkmou vs Takanuva. Also the sets still kinda have more of a mahrivibe i mean thats probably why gali mistika had a mask that doesn't resemble any other kaukau designs. It looks more like hahlis 2006 mask. Shouldve been 1 extra year to save mata nui's life and then one final attempt to wake him up so he could push makuta out of his body who has taken over when a 2008 matoro saved matanui. The nuva would then take on makuta in metru nui or even in a now semi post apoclyptic matnui.
I wish they will take the opportunity to show case the potential of #2 in the new bionicle waves.

I always wondered why there weren't a natural tribe of Shadow Matoran, (aside from the corrupted Av-Matoran)
I really wish they finished all of the story serials instead of just ending them when the sets where cancelled. There where so many stories that I wanted to see resolved. They left the Toa Mahri as mind controlled Skakdi slaves with the Toa Hagah going to save them. Lewa was captured by Boto Magna natives. Kopaka and Pohatu where left stuck on The Red Star with Mavrah. The Marendar was accidentally let loose to kill all the toa. And on top of all of this Velika was revealed to be a Great Being, had murdered Karzahni and Tren Krom, and was about to murder Axonn, Brutaka, Toa Helryx, Makuta Miserix, Artakha, Toa Tuyet, and Vezon all at once.

But who would've taken Matoro's place had the Mahri been at Karda Nui? And would they have been reverted back to Inika form with flight upgrades or something else?

+Roan Cox yes, but I believe Meso was using it as an example of what a set might have looked like. the image of the "carving" does show that they were indeed meant to be spiders originally.
Nr.1 should've been lower on the list imo. They're just the founders, they've already done their part long ago. Why are these 2 characters so great? It's not that much that they could've brought to the story, if introduced.

In the canon story, using the Mask to heal Mata Nui can only happen in Karda Nui, so instead of Matoro breaking through to the core at the end of 07 and dying then, the story likely would've seen the Toa Mahri defeat the Barraki together, maybe with the aid of Brutaka, Hydraxon, or Teridax, and then progress to the core as a group, with the Mask in their possession.
Upon arrival, they would find themselves dealing with the same problems as the Toa Nuva: The year's villains are corrupting and enslaving Matoran, so the Toa have to partner up with the survivors to face them. Maybe they would've still been Makuta, maybe Lego would've kept the Brotherhood for the Nuva's story arc and created a new group of villains.
The Toa would reach the Codrex, Mata Nui's heart, and this would be where Matoro donned the Ignika and sacrificed himself to save his friends and the Matoran (Maybe undoing the Kra-Matoran's mutations too), destroy the villains, and bring Mata Nui back from the dead and setting the stage for the Toa Nuva to awaken him.
I'm guessing that the Toa Nuva's story would've been similar to the Toa Nuva Blog from 2007, with them making preparations for Mata Nui's rise, and, rather than healing him at the core, descending into the tunnels below Metru Nui to jumpstart his brain, making The Darkness Below, or whatever that serial was, part of the main story. Teridax would've used the brain's own defences against them, with a construct of himself being the final villain of the saga.

The Tahu pen stated that he was the oldest, but that information is even less canon than wherever else the ages were stated.

I'm a tiny bit salty, we got the Stars sets instead of bio-mechanical dinosaurs on Bota-Magna, one can only hope G2 will use some of the concepts they couldn't in G1 one way or another.
I would have loved to see a set involving some Tyrannosaurus-like creature.
I would like to see the hordika come back, it could be an explanation of what happens when a skull spider infects a toa ( I also always wanted to know what it would look like for any of the other toa to become hordika)
