Trigger block with timed parries was the pinnacle? Look at how crowds of enemies just stand there and wait to attack one at a time in the early games. It was horribly boring after you saw the kill animations more than a few times.
@@josephschaffer2716 you know what else is boring, striking your enemy millions of times just waiting for him to die. Thank god Valhalla slightly improved that after odyssey.
@@josephschaffer2716 Some people find that fun. Like me It’s entertaining to just slaughter enemies consecutively and it’s more realistic than fighting an enemy that takes years to kill because they’re a higher level than you. The only thing I kind of agree on is the enemies attacking one by one, not so realistic and smart of the ai, but that is more or less the melee combat behavior in a lot of games such as Jedi fallen order and shadow of Mordor. If the ai all started to attack at once, then that would make the experience to frustrating for the player. And countering isn’t the only way to kill enemies, you can strike them for a few times consecutively and you will execute them in a brutal fashion or break their defense and attack them for four times, especially in ac3-rogue (which might have the best combat system right up their with brotherhood.
As much as I like the combat of the new games I'll always prefer the old mechanics and animations. I always loved how Ezio and Altaiir's counter-moves weren't always all fatal, they were just quick and efficient like they were trying to take as many people out of the fight as quickly as possible. I feel like the combat has gone a little over to the flashy side since AC3 where it leans really heavily into the dramatic kill moves with lots of spins and jumps and other flairs. I prefer my assassins to fight efficiently with no frills like an actual professional. As far as animation wise your guy actually looking like a trained swordsman when he fights I'd say Unity probably had the best animations out of all the games. They were just the right amount of efficient but with a little flair that made them feel unique to Arno.

Nothing drives me nuts like watching people only perform counter attacks in the first 2 AC games. It’s not engaging. Why don’t more people go on the offensive and utilize all of Altair’s combat skills? When you mix it all up, it’s significantly more fun than standing around waiting for someone to attack you. Not necessarily criticizing your actions, it’s just something I see so much in these types of videos.
@@numbron803 right! It’s way more engaging when you play aggressively, but keep your eye out for enemy attacks. Only counter when they attack, and doge iff necessary. The combats in the American saga are boring and easy, you can kill entire waves with just two buttons. and it doesn't even feel as satisfying as the arkham saga (and I'm talking about asylum), since there are no penalties for having bad timing since this in counterattacks is absurd, the enemies die instantly, the turns they take to attacking are ridiculous, and they don't leave you a wide range of mobility since the character moves slowly when he is in combat mode. In 2012, The Witcher 2 also came out, which is a game that had much more to offer in its combat.
