    Fun book facts on sign usage:
    Compared to over a dozen instances of Geralt using signs in the short story books (Last Wish & Sword of Destiny), he only uses it 3 times in the novel series across 5 books. Not counting Season of Storms.
    1) In Blood of Elves, he casts Aard at Rience's portal.
    "Geralt buried his knees in the sorcerer’s chest, raised his arm, forming the Sign of Aard with his fingers, and aimed at the flaming portal. It was a mistake."
    2) In Baptism of Fire, he casts Aard on a burning barricade. It was also noted that the potency of Witcher signs are affected by their potions.
    "Geralt arranged his fingers and hit the burning pile with the sign of Aard.
    Not counting on a great result, since it had been weeks without his witcher’s elixirs. But there was a result. The pile exploded and disintegrated, squirting sparks.
    3) In The Tower of Swallows, Geralt unsuccessfully casts, what seems to be Axii, on himself to calm down.
    "Shortly afterwards, he had to take another few breaths, he even had to run his hand under the table and cast a sign to calm himself - an unprecedented event. The effect - this was also unprecedented - was zero."

    Sign builds might not be the most effective but definitely the most fun cause of the added variety

    • @DerOrso
      @DerOrso 2 года назад +113

      Effective? That depends. Once you've buffed Quen enough, you can basically never be killed. Every first hit just breaks the Quen-Shield, and possibly kicks the perpetrator in the ass to boot, but Geralt takes no damage at all. In a boss fight you can get smacked by anything, and take no damage, or A piano could fall on Geralt's head - you just have to to reignite your Quen-Shield and off you go again.
      Igni is always a hit with all necrophages. You can hit two are three at once and while they are stunned and in flames jump behind them and cut them up with attack from behind - zip zip zip and you can have a pack of drowners sucking muck.
      Aard at the highest development is really just totally OP, especially against a crown of soldiers. Charged-cast into the ground and BOOM everyone within 20 feet of you is frozen and they take excessive damager on the first strike against them.
      Axii I practically never use, because it is too slow. You need to use the charged application for it to be any good, and everything you would need it for will have caught you by then. The one place it is really useful is against Alghouls, to get them to take their spines back in .
      Yrden is for Wraiths and vampires. Makes them first vulnerable. Can also be useful if you're caught in a pack of wolves or against those tarantula-like black spiders (yick) that like to get behind you and be nasty.
      And yes, my first major armor goal is always Griffin gear, because signs are universally useful. Just pick the right one for the right occasion, and always install the armor mod (looks only) TBO (The Black Ones) because my Geralt is elegant. But if I want him to be sexy, I put him in the Cat gear :)

    • @1Chasg
      @1Chasg 2 года назад +20

      That's exactly why I invested into signs for my first playthrough. It was fun unlocking the alternate versions and I think they keep things from getting repetitive with just swordplay.

    • @senseithomes
      @senseithomes 2 года назад +12

      I gotta say that I kinda disagree with that. When I play I really don't like using devastatingly broken builds like euphoria for example. And I don't build full damage because I like slower fights. It makes the game more intense and immersive. But some times when I want to do a mission that's way ahead ofmy level( for example I wanted to finish with the ofieri merchant diagram quest really earlier than I should. The quest was like level 85 and I was 70, enemies were touching me and I was dying immediately). I use quen so I don't get hit by a crossbow I don't see coming and I just keep hitting a range enemy since they don't block your attacks to build adrenaline and I throw igni to the enemies behind me. With the right decoctions and a mutation that's good for signs they were getting melted really quickly and I was safe for most of the time.. granted that needs patience and really good positioning to pull of since one hit and you are dead but fun and challenging nonetheless.

    Fluent American Sign Language speaker here: the Axii signing is absolutely correct. When signing two of the same letters right after each other, like in i-i, you should make the i symbol on separate sides of your body to indicate that there are two separate letters rather than just the same letter being emphasized.

    I think for the books case it is so the reader can better catch on what sign is being used at a time. While for the game I think it goes after what happens in the book. Geralt shouts the sign once, we see the effect and understands what it is about. Then later just uses it, and we as a reader understands what sign has been used by what effects that has been seen previously.
    Could also be that shouting or saying it brings more focus towards whatever sign is being used. As to bring more senses into it and thus more focus.

    The Griffin set doesn't make Geralt look fat; the cuirass looks like a normal cuirass would look (contrary to armor in a lot of fantasy games, by the way) , although i can't tell what material it's made of. Could be metal plates underneath, like a Brigandine

    • @generalerica4123
      @generalerica4123 2 года назад +7

      I mean, even if it did, that doesn’t really matter. Armor (at least most armor, obvious examples excluded) is not made to look good. It’s made to protect.
      So I would suppose that Geralt wears something like a gambeson underneath, possibly even a bit of mail? Which would thicken him up a bit.

    • @addictedtochocolate920
      @addictedtochocolate920 2 года назад +3

      @@1957DLT I've seen it. Thing is, i can't take it seriously when i know Geralt wouldn't be able to bend wearing that. Just as people can't handle the Cuirass' normal look because to them it looks fat, i cannot handle the moded look because it's just unrealistic and Geralt wouldn't be able to fight in it. It isn't even a matter of historical accuracy or protection anymore, but a problem that causes restricted mobility

    • @addictedtochocolate920
      @addictedtochocolate920 2 года назад +4

      @@generalerica4123 If you looks closely you will notice he is wearing mail.
      In previous version of the same armor (Superior, i think?) you can also see the lower part of a gambeson/Aketon.
      Now, in the middle ages fashion was quite important, just not as important as keeping you alive. This armor, however, looks pretty nice *and* it offers decent protection. A bit too fantasy-looking for my liking, though i have developed an unhealthy addiction for historical accuracy and prefer Geralt to wear a simple red Gambeson, which would be ideal for a traveler who doesn't have someone to help him get on a full plate harness or attach pauldrums (shoulder armor) to it. That's just me though, and the Griffin armor is actually designed in a way that Geralt could possibly put it on by himself: the Cuirass is secured by buckles on the sided, not on the back.
      The reason why breastplates have this rounded ("fat") shape is because that way they can deflect and absorb impacts way more efficiently than a flat piece of armor. It is also adjusted to the waist so the knight/warrior can bend while wearing it.

    I think Geralt says, "Igni" in that one shot for storytelling reasons. They didn't want to do a custom animation just for him doing the Igni sign in a casual way (the battle animation would look ridiculous there), and he wasn't carrying a torch. I found sign-element accordance quite obvious yet fascinating. Places of power always refer to it in one way or another: Axii under waterfall, Quen guarded by earth elemental, or Aard at the top of the mountain, where wind in howling. Also it’s mentioned in in-game books, if I remember correctly. In addition I recall a quest at Kaer Morhen location, where you have to charge stones with respected elements using sign.
    Some thoughts on Yrdeh:
    Me favourite sign, but so much underpowered. I think that enhanced form from Griffin set should have been default, otherwise it’s really tough to make any use of it in most battle scenarios. Had a very interesting and useful concept in Witcher 2.

    2:36 You are absolutely right Quenn protects you from physical damage and Heliotrope form magical damage.
    The obvious difference is in the way the sign is casted and (interestingly enough) in their difficulty. Heliotrope is really easy to use and is actually the first sign witchers learn as it protects them from (almost) every magic they encounter during the training.

  • @Weirdaman

    Aard and Igni can work with some bombs, ie. shattering ice or burning oils (I forgot the names).
    Maxxed Quen can serve as a free med kit if held in poison clouds.
    Yrden ray turret can shortly materialize wraiths (useful vs single target bosses, definitely better than the field debuff).
    I am not sure but I think that Axji puppet can force flying monsters to land at long range (longer than Aard, easier to use than a crossbow).

    Who the hell says the gryphon set makes Geralt look fat? It makes him look BARRELCHESTED, but not fat, considering the chest piece is dimeritum plate covered with a monster leather jacket. It’s also the best gear for a generalist sign build since you get both sign intensity, and stamina regeneration. Also neither quen nor the quen barrier let you reflect damage if you have damage reflection on your armor. It will still reflect if you have the poison mutation

    • @DerOrso
      @DerOrso 2 года назад

      The griffon breastplate is vaulted outward, and that is historical and functional. The reasoning is, that if a breastplate is hit by something heavy that would dent it inward, like a mace or a lance point, if the breastplate were resting against the wearer's chest (like a cuirass), the blow causing the dent would be transferred directly into the chest of the wearer, and the dent would remain and push into his chest as well - both certain to be very uncomfortable, if not completely incapacitating.

    All sign builds are the most fun, I used a full Yrden build last time and it was awesome. The grandmaster bonus + entanglement makes Geralt OP because if you use the alternative version of the yrden sign, every time it hits an enemy it leaves a new trap and with the grandmaster griffin set the trap is huge, you get to use double signs, the damage is boosted like crazy and the stamina regeneration is really high. It's the closest you can get to play as a mage, I didn't even need my swords.
    Many people don't try it because the armor is kind of ugly and makes Geralt look fat, but it's really fun.

    IIRC from the books, the Heliotrope is basically a more immediate but less lasting variant of Quen, basically it will immediately protect against a quick attack as soon as you cast the sign (by crossing the wrists) but will dissipate just as quickly, whereas Quen takes a couple seconds more to cast by making a slightly more complex hand movement, but can protect against stronger attacks and lasts longer in time. In the books, if Geralt has time he always casts Quen, and uses Heliotrope when he's really in a chinch and needs a quick protection (when Vereena first attacks, when he meets Yennefer while she's trying to release the Jinn etc.). I think in the game the "bubble shield" version of Quen is a beefed up variant of what the Heliotrope is supposed to be

    I may be too much of a dork here, but perhaps the whole "casting signs using the name" is something sort of like in D&D, how spells can need three different components, verbal: meaning you have to say something, be it an incantation or a name or something, somatic: you need to use some sort of motion, commonly with your hands and/or arms, and material: meaning you need some sort of object to serve as a catalyst. What if in the rare instances that the sign was cast saying its name, it was done to replace the hand motions / shape? In the anime Vesemir just has his hand out, in the well mission Geralt I *think* was sitting down? So perhaps they're interchangeable?

    As for the signs being used verbally, in "Blood of the elves" (at least the original polish version) when Triss talks with Lambert about Ciri, he uses Aard on a log in a fireplace and she says that "If I made the same gesture and focused the energy it would've flown out of the chimney" and when Yennefer later in the same book is teaching Ciri in the temple of Melitele she is teaching her gestures required to do magic and one of the test she performs is for Ciri to use a telekinetic burst on a shed and she outstretches her arm, focuses and the shed falls apart and flies across the countryside (A very powerful form of Aard I think). I think it's just that sometimes saying it out loud helps you focus your mind and that is probably why sorceresses use incantations pretty much in just the more powerful spells.

    For what I recall, Heliotrope cushions any impact geralt suffers. Including the impact of geralt's body into hard surface, like when Vereena throws him at a wall and he still felt the impact. And I think it only lasts a second or 2, since geralt only uses it in the last second. However, I can't tell the difference from it to Quen. May be the relation to Axi and the alchemical symbol of water has been interpreted in a more "metaphorical sense", like how water can be somewhat tided to emotions, manipulation, persuasion, or even illusions… Although for Igni and Aard they went in a more litteral sense of it, which make it a bit weird in consistency of the few witcher spells imo, but it still cool nonetheless.

    A great detail about the runewords(enchantments from the runewright)
    Using the replenishment runeword is really interesting.. adds some interesting effects to the fight
    Still talking about the runewright...
    During your basic playthrough
    I'd recommend most players use Severance in the steel sword(increasing the whirl and rend range)(Makes killing easier in death march_
    and Using the Replenishment enchantment on your Aerondight..(since you can basically use this sword throughout your whole NG+)(Also, increased damage makes fighting easier)
    Back to the point...
    Using the Replenishment runeword, which consumes an adrenaline point to charge your sword with a sign... you can do many more things..
    When fighting bruxae, heavy/medium armours dont always help doing the bruxae exploitation xLetalis showed in his video... But, charge your sword with Aard beforehand, and enter combat, use yrden and perform a quick attack, the sword will use the aard charge to knock the bruxae down, and the yrden still holding her can make it easier finishing her off.
    Similarly, You can also try charging your blade with Yrden and using aard with your fingers.. also, Yrden charge in your swords, help in fighting Centipedes
    Quen users(which is much of a necessity to charge up your Aerondight) , Can use this sign to make a shield but, the charge of quen on a sword heals you up real good... you can literally use 3 adrenaline points to heal yourself up fully from 1 points of vitality.
    Igni charge is also really good, As it applies a real great burning effect, much more effective than a normal igni(though it could have been due to the fact that the burning damage is getting added up with the slashing damage from your swords). Also useful outside a fight.. When a fight ends, and you still have adrenaline points left, use it to charge your sword. It makes your sword have a flaming effect, which will even be visible if you sheathe your sword, hence making the use of torch practically useless... Also, when diving underwater in the dark, this flaming effect can help greatly with vision lighting up everything around... just like it can be used as a torch while you explore caverns
