    You can use heavy duty gorilla tape to use on the seams between matts in your stalls as well as in horse trailer matts. It prevents shavings, pee, etc. from going under the matts. Urine can ruin an aluminum floor in a trailer . You may have to replace them from time to time but it has been a handy barn hack for me.

    To clean the windows you can use magnetic cleaners that will between the bars and the window, then you can easily clean from outside the window 👍

    I'm assisting in renovating some old filthy unused stalls for a boarding barn. Each stall floor is made of 25 floating 2x6 planks atop a gravel subfloor. That's just under 12ft front to back, giving some breathing room for the boards. A french drain below the gravel layer carries away urine and wash water to a ditch outside. The planks are locked down at each end by running boards fastened to the main posts and can expand and contract as needed. Like yours, the walls are just loose tongue-and-groove boards that slide in from the top. Disassembly is simple and the stalls are configurable to any shape needed using simple tools and heavy lifting. My two suggestions if someone installs such a floor are 1) tamp the gravel down well otherwise the floor will sink over time as the horses compact the gravel themselves and 2) use thick PVC pipes for the french drains as the residential standard thin-walled corrugated pipes will collapse and clog. May or maybe not put water-permeable fabric over the pipes. It's debatable which way is better. The mud can't wash through with the fabric in the way and will settle in the gravel and eventually clog the whole thing up. Easier to unclog the pipes than unclog the gravel. But really there's just no stopping the accumulation of dirt and dust in a horse stall and refurbishment is inevitable.

      Thank you so much for your comment. That is lots of really helpful information.
      It is so important to learn from people that already have stalls in place to learn how to make your own stalls better before you even start building.
      We have a French drain in our yard so I know all about those. We had huge flooding issues before we installed that drain.
      Thank you for sharing.

    It would be really easy for someone with basic fabrication skills and a welder to make your window grills hinged for cleaning. Thanks for sharing.

    Use a squeegee to clean the windows. Should work in the tight space quick and easy.

    What type/style of stall mats did you use?

    • @jmcfamilyfarm
      @jmcfamilyfarm  9 месяцев назад +1

      I’m not sure the brand. The mats are a heavy duty material. In Ontario you can purchase them at most horse/farm supply stores. They are specifically made for stalls.

    What kind of base do you have under the matts?

      We have a concrete floor. The floor was already in place. I then use shavings as bedding on top. Please let me know if you have any other questions. ☺️

      @@jmcfamilyfarm thank you. I’m trying to figure out how much a base would cost as It’s the only thing we can’t really do ourselves.😂😂

      I know it’s expensive when you have to hire someone. Good luck with building your stalls. I know my horses sure are happy to come in when the bugs are bad or when it’s snowing & blowing in the winter. 😊

    If you are building a closed stall for horses, you are not doing them any favor.

    • @jmcfamilyfarm
      @jmcfamilyfarm  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching. Having closed stalls has been a huge advantage for us for many reasons as I noted in the video. We live in Canada. Our gelding has terrible reactions to black flies so having a place to go at night provides him great relief. Also, during feeding times each horse has different supplements they require so again this ensures they are getting what they need. Horses benefit from being outdoors as much as possible but there are situations when horses do require a stall. I wanted to provide my feedback so people could consider things I suggested prior to building their own stalls. I know I would change some things I did if I re-built our stalls. Thank you for your feedback.
