Depends on the vitamin c that is in the product, if it’s stabilized there’s no need for that
Not true.. if it’s low strength , it’s probably not so difficult to stabilize.
@@da504ever That's not true. A lesser strength (concentration?) of vitamin C doesn't in a serum doesn't mean that it's easier to stabilize, or unlikely to oxidize. It's the type of vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid vs it's 'cousins'), along with the presence of stabilizers etc that determine relative stability.
Also! The type of vitamin C used in skin care products almost never is the type of Vitamin C that has showed evidence of helping your skin.

Yeah nothing beats a biologist.😊
retinol doesn’t exactly “thin” your skin and in fact boosts the production of ELASTIN / collagen. it dissolves the dead layer of the stratum corneum thus why you think it’s “thinning.” also, vitamin C should always be in dark packaging to prevent oxidization.. and dimethicone being the 1st ingredient in any product means you’re not getting anything higher than a 0.01% concentration of the ACTIVE ingredients... premium price for some slippery stuff. as a cosmetic formulator, this was very hard to watch.
"Dissolves?" I thought it sped up skin shedding by speeding up keratinocyte differentiation.
Also, as someone with dermatitic skin conditions, I know for sure dimethicone can be used at concentrations up to 15% or even higher in barrier creams to protect the skin from irritants, allergens, and abrasion.
Julia different wording, same result, point being the skin does not thin out with retinol use.
additionally - although old school, dimethicone is a good occlusive like you mentioned, irritating to some & can potentially exacerbate pores. what i highlighted was the addition of *active* ingredients, the guy in the vid mentioned the “standout” active.. which is last on the ingredients list. it’s essentially a face primer but to each their own. there are so many new wave emollients / occlusives with additional humectant properties, but we see dimethicone or silicone frequently because it can be a byproduct or cents to formulate. all shady marketing at the end of the day!
I also red that according to new researches retinol and retinoids don’t actually make your skin more photosensitive
I am not a scientific but it was a searcher saying that and she said it was really difficult for her to process it bc science has been saying the contrary for 30 years
Do you know about it?
Also pretty interesting, thank you for your comment
@@hotlikesauce you seem like a good source on this stuff. Considering that you say some parts of the video's rule of thumb advice are wrong, what advice would you lend to the layman when looking for a good anti-aging cream?
TheRABIDdude find a broad spectrum sunscreen you enjoy using because UVA/UVB rays nullify whatever a serum or cream does, no matter how good the formula. dull answer but truly thats your #1 age delay. then, you can look into different retinoids for your skin type, introduce them very slowly, like 1-2 a week (ex: mon / thurs) for a month, gradually building up once your skin familiarized itself with this ingredient. this can come in a serum or cream formulation. sunscreen becomes ESPECIALLY important if you choose to start a retinol journey.
Dimethicone is an occlusive*** too. It’s not “doing nothing” its keeping your natural skin barrier in tact and retaining water.
*Occlusive, but you're still right that it's useful.
yeah, same with collagen. It doesn't penetrate the skin but it works as a great humectant.
Interesting...thanks for sharing even though it's a bit out of context.
That’s not true. Dimethicone is silicone. It’s a filler used to reduce the potency of products and save skincare companies money on ingredients per product. It cheats the consumer.
@@gagastan4048 dimethicone still acts as an occlusive in the same way mineral oil or other organic occlusives retain skin moisture. It’s molecular weight means it cannot be absorbed into the skin, unlike some organic “better quality” ingredients, which can actually cause irritation over time. Silicones are one of the least-reactive ingredients meaning it’s safe enough and often used in baby products at 2%.

Why is it so hard to accept?? 😭
@@starcherry6814 because all the people praise people who get fillers for being young, when in reality, wrinkles are normal.
Depending on your genetic makeup, just sunscreen, a light moisturizer, and staying well hydrated may well be enough. They said that moisturizer doesn't prevent wrinkles, which is true, but it does plump up your skin and keep it from getting that crepe-y texture that old people can sometimes get.
Retinol is a freaking miracle though. I turned thirty last year and decided to get serious really serious about my skincare. My skincare routine was okay to begin with, no soap on my face ever, exfoliating, etc. Adding a retinol cream has been amazing. My skin looks younger than it did in college. It freaks me out when I look at colleagues my age. Sun damage, wrinkles, enlarged pores. I don't have problems with any of that. Partly it's genetic, but mostly it's good skincare. It's not even super expensive if you know what to look for. Offhandedly, I would guess that I spend less than $150 ish dollars a year. I mostly use Shiseido products, but you certainly don't have to.

Greg! Make sure you are using an SPF everyday since you are using retinol. Also if its irritating your skin, you can apply it over your moisturizer for a few weeks/months until your skin adjusts. I used to be sensitive to it as well.
You’re comparing serums and moisturizers but they go hand and hand. I’d be using the vitamin c serum followed with one of the moisturizers.
Vitamin c is not absorbed by the skin. You should take the vitamin pill.
I'm trained by the Lauder Bureau and worked in the beauty industry for years, and actually the best thing to prevent aging is a simple SPF applied properly even if you are sitting near a window or in the winter. You can get a facial one which is less greasy.
I've done that for years and I'm 45, and look in my 30s, I barely have any lines.
Also drinking water doesn't really help your skin much, good facial massage with an oil like almond with your hands or a massager helps, proper cleansing at night, not a wipe or dragging your face, yes to retinol but you don't need to pay those silly prices, you can get a good topical retinol from The Ordinary.
Glycerine as they say is a moisturiser, what they don't say is its a humectant, which means it draws water to the skin, I use rosewater and glycerin toner, which has both.
Regular exfoliation helps to shift the dead skin cells, another thing they don't cover, and you will look younger, a manual or enzyme based peel or simply buffing with a face cloth is as good, and using a cold pack from the freezer on your face.
Which SPF product would you recommend?
"OMG i always wanted to do the beauty thing" I love this guys.
I love this video, but I personally think there is slightly misleading information in it. Wish you would’ve gone more in-depth with certain topics. I might be wrong, but anyone feel free to share your opinion/evidence on this.
In my opinion, I don't think your first statement is appropriate. To say that ”this is the *only* anti-ageing and moisturizing cream that works according to scientists and has a scientific consensus.” is a little misleading. People will assume that this is the only cream/treatment that works and no other topical cream out there regardless of them containing the same main ingredient works. The Skinceuticals retinol creams are definitely some of the best formulas out there, but there are also a handful of other retinol-based products out there that are formulated just as well if not better than this brand-specific one. What you should've said was retinol is one of the only *skincare ingredients* that work and has the most research and backing.
(6:04) not all antioxidants are the same, but we do know that L-Ascorbic acid is proven to treat and prevent certain concerns in the skin, including collagen biosynthesis. It's a little unfair to say that the Bluelene product is superior to the La Roche Posay one because it contains rice bran oil which contains two antioxidants (tocopherol), vs the one (L-AA) in the La Roche Posay. In actuality the La Roche Posay also contains Tocopherol. L-AA+toco vs two indirect forms of toco.
4:47 it's a little vague to say that ”moisturizers” in it of itself does not have any scientific claims to actually be anti-ageing. Again most research is done on ingredients and not individual branded products. So therefore I also think you're giving people the wrong idea, and that the moisturizer they are currently using isn't doing anything when in reality it probably contains tocopherol, retinol, vitamin c, other antioxidants and derivatives of those. I just thought that was too much a broad statement to make about a category of products.
8:48 dimethicone is shown to have a beneficial effect on the skin. It creates a permeable barrier that works to prevent moisture loss. This is great to have especially for people that have dry and/or dehydrated skin. You can put all the glycerine, and other humectants you want, but if you do not have occlusive ingredients in the formula, there isn't going to be much improvement in your skin when it comes to hydration and moisture levels.
9:30 parabens have been shown to be the best way of preserving, much like phenoxyethanol, a lot of people and brands are demonizing these ingredients when they haven't even read the research to begin with.
10:40 wish you would've gone more in-depth about retinoids as they do not all perform the same. Retinyl palmitate is an ester and the weakest of them all. Esters are often referred to as ”retinol” when in reality they do not contain pure retinol, but a weaker ester.
The skin thinning (epidermis) is only temporary, that's why many people using pure retinol or a retinoic acid prescriptions often suffer from dryness and irritation at the beginning. The epidermis does eventually go back to its normal state, and in reality, over time retinoids help thicken the skin as it is shown to stimulate collagen synthesis.
Retinol is an antioxidant in itself, you can apply them during the day without negative effects.
Retinoids have been studied extensively and have shown that they do not increase sun sensitivity. Retinoids do break down when exposed to sun as they are more unstable and more likely to be less effective that's why a lot of companies are suggesting their products with retinoids for nighttime use only or because their formulas do contain other ingredients that contribute to an increase in sun sensitivity.
Wow, you know a lot about this topic! Really helpfull comment. If I were to go look for an everyday cream...what top 3 ingredients should I look for in your opinion? Or do you a have a personal preference you love already?
❤❤❤ again, thanks for taking the time to explain everything you know 👏
notinspiredatall thank you, my recommendations are below. I always recommend people do their own research, and if possible have a conversation with your doctors/dermatologist as everyone has unique skin and needs.
*Vitamin C*, Good *Exfoliation* (AHA or Physical), a good *Retinol*, and some *Sunscreen* (SPF of at least 30) is all you really need. Most products have other great supportive antioxidants, humectants, moisturizing occlusives, and other ingredients supporting the formula but those above should be the main focus of the formula.
A *Vitamin C* serum containing the pure form of Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) at a 10-15% concentration. It has been proven to stimulate collagen production, help fight free radical damage is that it's a great antioxidant, and help fight photo-ageing. Most Vitamin C (L-AA) serums will contain Vitamin E (around 1%), which as they mentioned is great for the skin. Vitamin C (L-AA) works best in conjunction with Vitamin E as it potentiates the benefits of Vit. C.
Product Recommendations
SkinCeuticals - C & E Ferulic Serum
Drunk Elephant - C-Firma
Paula's Choice - C15 Boost Serum
Clinique - Fresh Pressed Daily Booster w/ 10% Vit.C
Kiehl’s - Powerful Strenght Line Reducing Concentrate
Timeless - 20% Vitamin C+E Ferulic Serum
Products (can be Serums, Masks, toner, Creams) with *Alpha Hydroxy Acid* (AHA). Note that AHA is a category of ingredients. There are Glycolic, Lactic, Citric, Tartaric, Malic, and Mandelic acids. They all have the same main purpose, but they all have different molecular weights and therefore some will be stronger than others so be careful.
They will all help to resurface/exfoliate the skin. I would start with a low percentage and slowly build up to a higher percentage or a product with a higher blend of AHAs. AHAs will help to remove that build-up of dead skin, that will allow for other ingredients/products to absorb better, and also smooth out and reduce any texture (pores, wrinkles). Smoother, softer, glowing skin. The important thing is to never over-exfoliate, otherwise, you will start to damage your acid mantle and cause irritation and sensitize the skin. You can also choose to opt for a physical (granular) exfoliant, but they generally won't be as effective against the deeper texture and can be more abrasive to the skin.
Product recommendation
SkinCeuticals - Retexturizing Activator
Paulas Choice - 8% AHA Gel (I believe she has a variety of concentration and blends)
Drunk Elephant - T.L.C Framboos 12% blend
The Inkey List - Lactic Acid Serum
COSRX - AHA 7 Power Liquid
Clinique - 7 Day Scrub Cream
A great *retinol* product. Not all are the same as mentioned. If you've never used retinol, I would definitely use an ester like Retinyl Palmitate, it a very low dose of pure Retinol(
@@Christian14789 thank you!! I hope some more people take the time to read your comment since it's super complete and educational 🤗 I will start my journey on finding the products that work for me with a much solid base! Thanks

@@selenevandernix9353 thx I watched her and she makes some good points!
I think they had good intentions but its definitely poorly researched and lacks nuance.
@@selenevandernix9353 - I understand that for some a PhD. means everything but for those like myself - we understand that even a moron can achieve this title ! Not because you have obtained a PhD does it mean that you are correct with the information you are dispersing !! you’re somewhat correct about collagen however, it does act as a great moisturiser for the epidermis. glycerin is simply a humectant and is a great one but just because it’s lower on the ingredients list doesn’t mean it’s a bad moisturiser and not to forget you need occlusives to trap the hydration.
if it's lower on the ingredient list, it means there's an insignificant amount of the ingredient on the product... which means it does nothing.
Also, if you wanna know more, watch the video reply to this video from Lab Muffin Beauty Science and all the detailed videos she does about sunscreens! She has a PhD and actually uses/study skin care and explains whats wrong and what's right in their video

Warning for some people like me: Im allergic to glycerin, so it gives me cystic acne and makes me break out in blisters, so look for products with it low on the list
I don't need any anti aging creamI'm 21.
I just wanna make a smart investment

Wear sunscreen every day and you'll be good!!
Dr Dray on YT recommends getting serious with skin care after graduating college (around 21-22). But you should be using daily sunscreen no matter what age
They said you start losing 1% collagen every year since your early 20's
smart investment look at the company plug power. Hope this helps. Time the market good.
Dimethicone functions as an occlusive in a moisturizer that helps seal in the water and humectants and prevents trans-epidermal water loss... so no, I'd say Dimethicone plays a pretty crucial role in that moisturizer. If anyone wants to understand more about moisturizers, I'd recommend a broad-certified dermatologist RUclipsr Dr. Dray
Wow, I'm kinda disappointed, I usually like Asap... Lab Muffin Beauty Science did a response video. Do your own research.
Also look up vitamin c and it's effects on hyperpigmentation. You're welcome.
Yeah it seems like they didn't do enough research aaaanddd that they don't even use skin care soooo 🤷
Good vid guys! Thank you!! There’s too much misinformation out there.

3:09 In case you still don't realize, "Oryza Sativa" is actualy means rice not marijuana lmao
I'd recommend the inkey list retinol serum. It's a really great introductory retinol and it's a very good price point. If you want a stronger one, the ordinary has a great range at different concentrations and they're also well priced.
Edit: also the drinking water thing is a myth. It doesn't make that much difference unless you're dehydrated to the point of death. It does help brain function though so I mean it can't hurt (unless you drink too much, that will kill you).
The damage from the sun caused from the epidermis weakening by retinol can actually outweigh its anti-aging benefits
Could you guys talk about "beauty"-centric multi-vitamin/supplements? Just for example, there are collagen supplements with anti-anging claims... My intuition tells me its all B.S. lol But I'd love to hear more about the science of beauty supplements, whether something you take orally will show up in your skin or not 😊👍
Watch natachaoceane in YT
Biotin and other vitamins will only help your skin/hair if you're deficient in them. Ingesting collagen does have promising research but it's all quite new.
I've noticed a difference in my skin and hair when ingesting collagen.

Vitamin C serum faded my acne scars and brightened my complexion. I notice a massive difference when I stop using it.
Any Moose No!!!! Oranges have a low pH, and you will give a chemical burn. Ju
Anonny Moose if you wanted to look at it that way (which obviously wouldn’t work but still..) you might as well rub broccoli over your face as it has almost double the vitamin C content
That totally makes sense because it is an antioxidant and helps prevent oxidative stress. I believe what he was trying to say is that vitamin E is an even more powerful antioxidant and it’s in a higher concentration in the cream.
Anonny Moose buying products which have been specifically formulated for your skin can be cheaper in the long run that using “fresh” ingredients that cannot be stored. The brand geek and gorgeous have an amazing vitamin C serum for €10.
Anonny Moose I don’t buy into the “natural” ideology that brands are pushing now. Everything is a “chemical” - be it orange juice or L-ascorbic acid. Some molecules are highly unstable, I’d rather trust science and a good chemist to formulate skincare which uses research backed ingredients.
I needed this omg!

Yes. Tretinoin products were made for acne. It was later discovered it was good for fine lines and wrinkles too

Here after the debunking video? 🙋🏻♀️
Thank you so much for breaking down the science! I always avoided skin care because it was so stressful to dive into the science, but now I feel like I can make an educated decision and it's such a relief! Could you guys do a video on sunscreen? Like which are the best for you, which work best, and what is best for sensitive skin? I'm allergic to most sunscreens but know I should wear them so it's a continuous struggle for me! I would love to find a product that works, that doesn't make my face and eyes sting.
RUclips gave me a skincare brands ad before this and it made me wonder if it was the recommended one.
It's always so interesting hearing other's perspectives! :) As an aesthetician who has worked alongside doctors and aesthetic nurses, there were definitely a couple points you brought in which I would disagree with, but some I agree with! I guess that's the cool thing about science, we keep learning everyday and even the most intelligent doctors, chemists and other scientists out there will have differing opinions and perspectives!
