When they said the game was intentionally unbalanced, that was interpreted as "UI Goku mogs half the roster by default." Which was expected, but is honestly still kind of fair considering his cost. I think they actually did a good job balancing characters around their DP cost.
What they absolutely botched was the system mechanics. Nobody wanted infinite stalling, sparking mode spam, afterimage strike nonsense or the fight turning into a rhythm game every time somebody attempts a combo. I still like Sparking Zero, but it's something I'm exclusively playing for the single player or with my bros. Netplay for this game is cancer.

This is why I hate modern gaming. The series was never meant to be hyper competitive but we live in an era where you can't just enjoy something that puts player vs player against each other without people trying to make it the next global tournament game. This is why everyone bought it but most people dropped it after facing sweats in ranked grinding 24/7. I played a ton of Tenkaichi 2 and 3 with my friends back in the day but we all know the game was just for fun. "High level play" kills the fun in games like this.

    • @fizzyjizz7374
      @fizzyjizz7374 3 часа назад +48

"High level play" feels bad because the game's mechanics are awful. 99% of people's complaints with the game have virtually nothing do with "sweats" and everything to do with how people online are able to abuse bad game design to cheese out a win. That and the customization and story mode are quite subpar.

I wanna play this game long term but it’s hard for me to want to when the game is an unbalanced mess
      And I don’t mean characters.
The actual mechanics of the game feel bad if you plan on playing the game outside of just for fun with friends.
It’s still hype, but you get caught side stepping on opponents. Movement feels horrible as there is some sort of invisible wall in the way of maneuvering over or below people. Not a thing in old bt games

The Competitive BT3 and BT2 community make the enjoyment of those games even higher with their discoveries of advanced mechanics like the "enigma dash" or "flanking" while Sparking zero has nothing to please both casual and hardcore audiences. The game has poorly balanced mechanics that allow characters like 19 and 20 to get away with a camping playstyle. The players showed that, and now it's up to the december patch to fix the game. What the game is meant to be is irrelevant when most people don't want to play it anymore, so whatever the game is trying to accomplish, it failed at it. Btw, as @DarkEntityTheory said, this is an official tournament.
Everyone says the game is meant to be "unbalanced", but when the developpers said it, they always meant character stats, not mechanics, otherwise that would mean that 19 and 20 were meant to be top tier, it's obviously not what was intended.

This game has unintentionally done a lot to forward the conversation of game balance and "competitive viability." When the game dropped everybody was happy to have a game that was "Dumb fun" without really being serious about what that does to a game's lifespan. It's hard to stay interested in something that is has zero consideration for the long term. If the skill ceiling of a game isn't fun, then that's one less incentive to improve.
I'm happy to own the game, especially since it gave me a reason not to take ranked mode super serious (an attitude which I intend to cultivate in my other games), but I'm more interested in learning Tekken/Virtua Fighter or getting to Master rank in SF6, no point wasting grind time on SZ if it's just a party game to play with friends that don't like fighting games. I do wish things had been different for this game, it could have been THE arena fighter, but oh well.
Edit: When MK1 had that Sindel/Jax looping unblockable, it was considered controversial that it was banned mid tournament. Not picking a side there, but compare and contrast with this SZ "play seriously," and you'll see why this is silly. Even in the midst of that controversy, it was generally understood that its the devs responsibility to fix it in the long term, and that the tournament ban was a short term solution. Telling players to play seriously like that's not exactly what they are doing is pretty cringe.

Idk what to propose system mechanic wise because id want to make sure the game has its spirit and doesn't get turned into a competitive fighter that it doesn't need to be, but clearly they need to overhaul enough or have some sort of competitive mode created that changes things for these types of things if they want to keep a tournament series going. im sure its not gonna reflect well if it keeps going like this

It's funny how one of the biggest complaints with the most popular modern fighters is how the mechanics heavily favor aggressiveness, yet Sparking Zero seems to be on the opposite end of the spectrum. The beginning of that set with androids flying for skill points reminded me a lot of Ken and Chun whiffing normals for meter build at the beginning of a match in Third Strike, except it happened much less often in Third Strike and was done in like 10 seconds anyway lol. Hopefully the Devs can take a real look at whats wrong with this footage and not just assume poor sportsmanship or being unserious. I'd personally love for Sparking to have a longer term fanbase. Fighterz is nice and all, but playing it tends to make me just want to play a Marvel game instead. If Sparking is a blow up...oh well. But hopefully itll get better.

The game being unbalanced is done on purpose and is very much so how all the old dragon ball games are. This is why I said what I said about how this "shouldn't be treated as a competitive game". Nevermind whether or not it's a Fighting Game, Bandai Namco just clearly didn't build it with competitive competition in mind which makes this whole tournament baffling for even existing in the first place.
For the record, before anyone says it, just because I don't believe it should be competitive doesn't mean it doesn't deserve proper balance adjustments. Fun can be compromised by broken mechanics too, not saying it can't. I used to play a ton of Playstation Allstars and the bane of my existence when I ran duos with my buddy was running into a Kratos every match. In SCV, it was Natsu. So on so forth. If a game isn't competitive, then it should be fun at the very least and any elements that compromise the fun should be looked at closely.
Here, these players basically just demonstrated exactly what the problems are and why this tournament never should have happened.

      Yup.
Honestly I don't know why every game these days want a Ranked Mode. In games like these I feel it's a lot better to have accolades where people can just rate your profile based in how you play, that way at a glance someone can tell if you're fun to fight against, annoying, or really sweaty and play top ranked characters.
They should have just left Ranked out.

The game is mechanically bad and this is what happens when you don't iron out those issues and people want to be apologists for this game talking about "it's supposed to be unbalanced" or "It shouldn't be taken seriously" or whatever buzz phrase people mindlessly spout, but also fail to realize that every game can be optimized whether you like it or not, Mario kart and mario party can be optimized, Sonic can be optimized, souls games can be optimized, Tryhards will exist everywhere, It's not about having OP characters or a Meta because that's just the nature of any fighting games, what's important is having good mechanics that incentivise fun DESPITE the competitive side of things. This is why smash bros succeeds because even though that was designed with the casual in mind, the competitive side can get a kick of the depth that the game offers since those people who are hardcore are in it for the long run. This was understood 17 years ago and people wanna act surprised like this wasn't common sense. This game didn't even release with a player quick match which just shows how undercooked and untested most of this stuff was. The game should be balanced, but balanced around Fun and the shit that you saw in that tournament is exactly what needs to be patched out. Competition isn't ruining anything, the devs making a mechanically illiterate game is the problem.

Creating a competitive arena fighter is possible with the right effort. I would like to see this game featured at EVO, but for it to be viable on the FGC's largest platform, the game requires adjustments and significant overhauls in several areas.

Honestly Mike I already knew when I saw the tournament rules for the Online Qualifiers that it was gonna be a mess as everything that was shown me and other players already knew about. I don't really get why people are getting mad at Hillia or Shinryu either as any competitiive player will tell you they are gonna to use the best options to win whether you are qualifying for a event or playing for money in any aspect. So making Hillia have to " play seriously" when he already was and making him lose I found it mad corny and unprofessional on their end ESPECIALLY when the Android 19 & 20 ting with the Dragon Dashing was shown in the first month of the game being released but instead they only focused on nerfing Yajirobe when people were talking about that also.
I was also one of those people who didn't understand why they decided to do tournaments now when the game still needs hella things fixed, Input Delay, Perception, Z Counter, Super Counter, InstaSpark, No Ki Blast cooldown etc. when they have a patch coming out in December anyways. As me and my Tenkaichi 2 & 3 players said Sparking Zero moved so many step backwards when in the older games they were balances in those games for a reason and now we got what we have with Sparking the games weren't perfect but the mechanics as a whole were implemented way better. Changes need to happen soon as players are leaving this game pretty daily which is sad to say but this game was just not ready for release.

Mike i feel like this idea that this game is not ment to be competative because of this when so many older games have something similar going on. What Dr.Jero is doing is only possible in this game because its an arena fighter with flying as a mechanic. But a similar keepaway is present in other games. Also the competator that won posted on his twitter saying he played like this on purpose to show Bandai how broken the game is.
But games like Marvel 2 follow the same structure as a game like sparking zero. Theres no way to work around and beat the high tier characters in the game unless you use them yourself.(thats why the other person had the same team, before being forced to change) When sf2 came out theres impossible matchups like gief vs honda. Alpha 2 evil ryu being banned. Fist of the north star a completely broke game that has been played comepetatively. Tekken 7 Leroy top 8. Smash 4 Bayonetta, smash ultimate banning steve.
What happened in sparking zero is awful, its showing the devs the state of the game, and we all know the game is going to be patched. But im tired of the narritive that just cuz a games broken it isnt competitive when that isnt true. Just cuz you see the same characters and meta in a fighting game it cant be competitive when otner games follow a similar structure at launch.
Ive seen it for years both playing and consuming fighting games. Ive seen people play boring keep away using strong characters and exploiting cheese. These players should have been banned period.

Their dragon dash costs no ki, so they can spam it. They're also the best counters to themselves since they can't drain each other's energy. The match is also timed, so if you can't catch them, they win on time if they manage to tag you a few times.
