    I remember them playing at a school dance in Marathon NY must have only been a year or so after this. They were Ronnie Dio and the Electric Elves then. Not sure what year it was. 69 or 70? Use to see them locally after that as Elf. Was slways kind of proud a local boy made it so big. Was always a Dio fan, for sure. RIP RONNIE!

    Dio was perhaps the only relavant rock artist in the 1980's-2000's whose first legit records came out in the 1950's

      The only one I can think of to come close was a friend of his, Pat Boone. Go listen to "Ain't that a shame", and then his cover of Dio's "Holy Diver", haha. Dio sings backup vocals on the cover.

    Just amazing how Dio went from Beach Boy style of music, to the the Legandary Heavy Metal Voice that he became. Just incredible R.I.P.

      @@joeyjackman675 agreed. His really early stuff in the early 60's actually was very similar to Frankie Avalon and Dion and the Belmonts. It wasn't until around 1972 with elf that you can hear the Dio that we all know and love

    Gary Driscoll on drums (lasted all the way through Rainbow's debut LP),
    Nick Pantas on lead guitar (sadly died in a car accident the whole band was involved in)
    David "Rock" Feinstein (Dio's cousin) on rhythm guitar (lasted up to Elf's debut LP)
    RJD on bass and vocals
    I believe they became The Electric Elves not long after this...

    Proud to say my first concert was Dio in Lubbock, TX in 1988 I was 16yrs old and it was an experience I will never forget. Ronnie was and will always be a legend. Thank you for the great music and memories. RIP

      @@swampdonkey67 Yeah, sure, the Who stole a song by a completely unknown band in New York state and released it a year before this footage has been dated. "Substitute" was released as a single in the UK on March 4, 1966. They were obviously pretty heavily influenced by the Who. Christ.

    My first Concert was "SacredHeart 86" I'm fortunate to have seen Dio live 15 more times through the years. His voice and stage presence was unmatched in Heavy Metal!🤘

    This reminds me of when i saw brian johnson playing with his band geordie before acdc. Would not have guessed this was dio. Loved black sabbath and dio for years and never have seen this. WE ROCK!

      @@manicdgr Almost every solo artist still has a band. I think if you've named the band after yourself and you're not part of a musical family like the Jacksons, Gibbs, Hansens or Van Halens, it counts as solo.

      @@johndanielsforJesus don't know about now but we still had plenty 15 plus years ago just not at college apartments or frat houses those got cracked down on "used to go to plenty of those in the late 90s before I was at the legal drinking age" but discreetly in friends basements or out on farms out of site when police showed up and no one knew about it unless you were invited or was with someone that was

    Take a look at when he was with "Elf". I had an album by Elf, saw Dio on the Last in Line Tour... I believe it was 1982-ish... was in the autograph Line after the show and handed him the Elf album to sign... 🤣
    You should have seen his face (like he saw a ghost!) He laughed his ass off and signed "To Jeff, Thanks for the laugh!!! All the best, always.) Big memory for a young metal fan!

    I have some recordings from those early days by the late Ronnie but I didn't remember this song and I didn't think there were some video either ! Thank you. A pity we don't see Ronnie very much. It seems weird indeed, how the music changed in a matter of a few years... Elf was boogie and something else, a bit hard rock too, but Rainbow was totally different music (and quite different from Deep Purple too, btw). Ronnie was great on ballads, too, as we can hear on Roger Glover's Butterfly Ball in 1974....
