- Lucifer's Friend is a German hard rock band, formed in Hamburg in 1970 by guitarist Peter Hesslein, singer John Lawton, bassist Dieter Horns, keyboardist Peter Hecht, and drummer Joachim Reitenbach. The group was an early practitioner of heavy metal and progressive rock;[2] they also incorporated elements of jazz and fusion into their music, especially in their fourth album Banquet of 1974.[3][4] Beyond heavy metal, the band has been cited, too, as one of the pioneers of doom metal, helping to define both genres due to their heavy sound and dark oriented lyrics of their debut Lucifer's Friend of 1970,[5] and returning to their roots in 1981 with Mean Machine, although more influenced by speed metal.

I used to play music in the hobby shop I worked at in the late 80's-early 90's. I was listening to the Styx-Man Of Miracles album and a guy who can only be described as Charles Manson's twin asked if it was Lucifer's Friend. It was a bit strange, but i went out and found some used records. Whatta band! I later got a few CD's before they went out of print and/or got to be hundreds of dollars. RIP Lawton, Horns and Rietenbach from this original lineup.
I lived in Germany from 1966-70 (11-15 years old), so got a weekly shot of Beat Club, which was always live. Oh yeah, and we were all in love with Uschi.

Thank god for RUclips. All the years of listening to classic rock stations and we only got to hear the same 100 songs over and over. Even the bands we loved only had the hits played. I’ve discovered so many great bands. Bang, Elf, Fanny, Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie, and so many more.
Thanks for listing those, I have more music to check out now. There's so much more the radio could be playing. Sometimes you get lucky with college radio but they're few and far between.
@Kevin James I watch a RUclips series called Sea of Tranquility and the hosts name is Pete Pardo. Gentle Giant is his favorite band. He is always talking about them. I have started to listen to them. They are amazing musicians. They play extremely complex arrangements. Really good stuff. You should check out this youtube channel. The guy is really knowledgeable and talks about a lot of the lesser known 70’s and 80’s bands.
Righto! The Smoke on the Stairway to Hotel Freebird is so bad and awful... Here in Houston our "classic rock" station broadcasts on two frequencies! Cox is too lazy to have two different formats. I grew up loving the radio as a kid but now it's dead to me. I was fortunate enough to have an old girlfriend that introduced me to the likes of Budgie and Frank Marino! Rock on! 🤘

I'd never heard of this band until recently and I quickly put my hands on their discography. The early Scorpions vibes are really astonishing and the influence was probably mutual. This is why youtube can be a great time machine if one ignores all the mediocre content

А многие взрослые нк понимали такую музыку. Как мой отец говорил, что Deep Purple в 1970 году для него был шоком! А я уже его в 80-х слушал!

I will never get over their name. Lucifer's Friend is one of the ballsiest names of ALL TIME. 1971 and their name was Lucifer's Friend. That is one of the most metal band names ever and they were 30 years or more ahead of their time.

@@j.dragon651 nah, they were one of the first metal bands. Some of their songs and albums were more metal than others, some of their later stuff is straight up prog though. But it does sound very different then a lot of metal even for trad metal standards.
It definelty meets Metal-Criteria: Noisy, screamy vocals, intense drumming, heavy riffs, thick bass

Wow, ahead of its time with a masterful heavy rock or heavy metal sound. This group was also, in addition to Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, a precursor of the genre. Great, I loved it. 🎶👍

I’m blown away. First, I’m 56 and I’ve never heard of Lucifer’s Friend. I haven’t even heard another band, past or present, give reference to them. And that’s tragic. Second, while other bands were wasting time and effort with saxophones, trumpets and trombones, these cats break out the French-horn.
A sound that reminds me of Dio and Deep Purple a bit. These guys were criminally underrated. They didn't get recognized due to their name unfortunately. Vocals were fantastic!!!!

So great that Beat Club preserved all this superb material. I'm from UK and sometimes think despairingly about all the classic footage that must have gone into the BBC's tape recycler. Thank you, Beat Club.
What really sucks is that there is just so much music that you can't listen to it all, bands you might have liked go unknown to you. I've listened to metal since I was 13. I'm 54 now and I have never heard of these guys before.

...thanks SO much whosoever you is for iploadin this naasty gem-if not for your sharin it I probly never would have heard*(/seen) it...this performance cuts th studio recording of this song to little damp PIECES...everybody's been used to a style much like this since th 80s (though rarely w/such utterly BRUTAL precision) but when this was let loose in 1971(!) they musta sounded like th goddam apocalypse....again, my sincere gratitude...cheers...
I'm blown away by this band. I've never heard of these guys until today and I love the song already. My first impression is "Wow!" 😮 Unless you lived in West Germany during this time and/or in Europe, then sure, these guys are practically unknown here in the States. I just happened to click on this in my feed. I distinctly get a Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, almost "Coven" influence here. Coven, I believe, is another early 70's dark Luciferian band with some good songs.
The reason why people are just discovering these early 70's darker, more heavier bands, is likely due to record collectors uploading their obscure, extremely rare LP'S for others to hear and enjoy. Thanks for sharing this, by the way. I've truly enjoyed this. I grew up a metal head during the 80's, but do love finding new obscure bands to add to my Playlists. 😊
