Lucifer's Friend - Ride The Sky (1971)

- Lucifer's Friend is a German hard rock band, formed in Hamburg in 1970 by guitarist Peter Hesslein, singer John Lawton, bassist Dieter Horns, keyboardist Peter Hecht, and drummer Joachim Reitenbach. The group was an early practitioner of heavy metal and progressive rock;[2] they also incorporated elements of jazz and fusion into their music, especially in their fourth album Banquet of 1974.[3][4] Beyond heavy metal, the band has been cited, too, as one of the pioneers of doom metal, helping to define both genres due to their heavy sound and dark oriented lyrics of their debut Lucifer's Friend of 1970,[5] and returning to their roots in 1981 with Mean Machine, although more influenced by speed metal.
RIP John Lawton.

Why has no one picked up the french horn in their hard rock bands after this?! It's so haunting and alerting. Like a train. On the other hand I'm glad it's not overused.

Jonh Lawton ,fera.Marcou presença.no Uriah Heep.excelente vocalista.
The lead singer sounds a bit like Ronnie James Dio.
The lead singer is John Lawton. First in 1976,1979, 1995 and for the last time (so far) 2013 lead singer of Uriah Heep.
I also have to say he reminds me of Klaus Meine (lead singer of Scorpions) but I find him more pleasing because he has a voice which is not that nasal. ☺
Singer kinda looks like Richie Blackmore.
Oki Zelter yes he took over for Bernie Shaw a few times did’nt he.
He took over for David Byron in 1976. Byron had been kicked out because he began, when drunk, to abuse the audience.
Another prominent face taking the part of the leadsinger( for Uriah Heep) is the one of Ken Hensley (the genius on keyboards in the group). Lawton left the band himself in1980. ( All the time he had quarrels with Hensley)
Have to admit, that there were a lot of changes of band members, but for the first time Lawton took the place on mikrophone from founding member David Byron.
Bernie Shaw entered the group in 1986, six years after J.Lawton's first leaving in 1980. (Think today the only founding member remaining, is Mick Box on lead guitar.)
By the way I'm absolutely no 'die hard' UriahHeep fan, but I recognized him (John Lawton) at once as a later member of Uriah Heep and it began to interrest me.
Greets from Germany:Keep on rockin' in the free world!
@@crackedbrainOG Does he? I must admit I know John Lawton's face better than Blackmore's ( Uriah Heep was more in German media in the '70s when I was a child.) I bought my first 7''single in 1974 (I guess) it was Stormbringer from Deep Purple. But I never learned much more of them, than (further on) only the Ip "Burn". Because in the later seventies and the early eighties I was into bands which were in different styles from Whitesnake or Rainbow, I never really remembered how R.Blackmore looked like. ( I know it's kind of ..?.. don't know is it ignorant? 😂)

I used to play music in the hobby shop I worked at in the late 80's-early 90's. I was listening to the Styx-Man Of Miracles album and a guy who can only be described as Charles Manson's twin asked if it was Lucifer's Friend. It was a bit strange, but i went out and found some used records. Whatta band! I later got a few CD's before they went out of print and/or got to be hundreds of dollars. RIP Lawton, Horns and Rietenbach from this original lineup.

Thank god for RUclips. All the years of listening to classic rock stations and we only got to hear the same 100 songs over and over. Even the bands we loved only had the hits played. I’ve discovered so many great bands. Bang, Elf, Fanny, Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie, and so many more.
Thanks for listing those, I have more music to check out now. There's so much more the radio could be playing. Sometimes you get lucky with college radio but they're few and far between.
@Kevin James I watch a RUclips series called Sea of Tranquility and the hosts name is Pete Pardo. Gentle Giant is his favorite band. He is always talking about them. I have started to listen to them. They are amazing musicians. They play extremely complex arrangements. Really good stuff. You should check out this youtube channel.
