The Test Drive Game Most Don't Talk About

- Test Drive as a franchise has gone through numerous iterations, most being so wildly different they might as well be a different franchise. This one is no different, an extremely underrated title featuring the 24 hour of Le Mans.

5:10 to add some information here: if you race on le mans with the time set to several hours or even 24 - you could go to the pits any time to save your game and then rest. allowing you to quit the race but load the save file from the menu. Which is very mandatory that you take breaks on a console like the dreamcast or you could end up damaging it due to over usage.
Gran turismo should have done this especially with 4 with all those immense 24 hour races, Sure there's b-spec but it still require at least 8 hours to complete one of those, forcing you to keep the PS2 powered on through the night (if playing on console and not emulator) at the mercy of black outs, power outages, thunderstorms or even wear and tear.
You forgot the even lesser-known PS2 version which, as I recall from my childhood, had additional tracks and cars.
It's such an unknown game that only recently did I start seeing playthroughs of it here on RUclips..
Once again, the aesthetic Dreamcast Millenium styles, and amazingly the day to night cycle really amazed me back then
I really love that people are talking about this game more often and giving it more love. I occasionally play the 2000 PC version (the one developed by Eutechnyx, also has a goated intro) and that version ain't too terrible.
that Version is my childhood. I wish some modders would try to fix a few Bugs in the game though like that you have to win every race in GT1.
This game is named Test Drive Le Mans yet you drive on random tracks in the game.
Imagine playing this game for 24h
Imagine playing GT4 for 24 hours
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious imagine playing Forza Motorsport 2023 for 24 hours
play FM4 for 24 hours instead
@@realmustangboy6437 any game for 24 straight hours is a death sentence, let's admit it

In the UK the game is simply called "Le Mans 24 Hours". It's not saddled with the pointless and crap at the time "Test Drive" moniker which made absolutely no sense at all.
It's not random tracks, these are circuits which have played host to GT and LMP cars in the endurance championships.
Aside from the Test Drive Unlimited series I had no idea they dabbled into legitimate racing, it's a rather good racing game overall. It is a shame that there's no money or customization around to play with but having good AI, physics and real time weather for tracks is pretty amazing for its time. Great video as always Dove!
They didn't, thius had absolutely nothing to do with the Test Drive series. Was just saddled with this awful title for the USA only market (i think)
Don't forget the PS2 port that had the cars of the 2000 LM24 AND Petit Le Mans to boot. But no Toyota GT-One.
it truly has cars
I played and own this game for the Dreamcast. It shows what the Dreamcast could do and it's really a great racing game.
Same, the visuals were the most realistic I ever seen to that point in a racing game on a small CRT, it had amazing lighting effects and the exhaust flames were beyond awesome.
The playstation version and even PC version if I remember well sucked and was different from the amazing Dreamcast version.
Here is another one to this list!
@@guily6669 Well, the funny thing this version was also ported to PC. And it also looks good
I own the Dreamcast version; it really is very good (of course aged now but there's still fun to be had).
As far as I know it's the first game to feature a full 24 hour race as well.
In the UK the game is simply called "Le Mans 24 Hours". It's not saddled with the pointless and crap at the time "Test Drive" moniker which made absolutely no sense at all. The championship is incredible in this. The feel of driving is unsurpassed in a game of this age. Having 24 cars on screen at once was jaw dropping, the headlights are incredible. And having multiple classes in the race like the real thing made it feel much more authentic. My favourite DC racing game beating out Metropolis Street Racer.
I played the Unlimited episode of the Test Drive game series. The problem was that it randomly went in freeze and I had to restart my old Xbox 360 at that time. But beside that, I loved it. And seeing the Le Mans episode is a brain explosion for me. Because I used to play with the Ferrari cars one (I don't remember the correct name)
The PC version is quite good too, the fantasy tracks are great and the actual Le Mans with the cars having variou stats in classes and in race save was awesome. Even if you had to unlock the V12 LMR as a bonus car or with cheats on the PC version. It made me appreciate the GTS/GT classes more and it had Porsche in it, and a pretty good Le Mans rendition
Something I never forgot about this game is that it has one of my favourite main menu tunes in gaming history. It's phenomenal.
The PS1 version has same engine with C3 Racing (Car Construction Championship Racing)
5:00 Love the use of danganronpa OST, "beatiful lie" is one of the most vibey songs in all of gaming
This sure looks like a fairly ambitious game judging by the physics, with competent AI, an awesome, proper day/night cycle (seriously, how come something like GT3 or 4 didn't have this), and fairly good graphics. It's just too bad that the best version happened to be the one on the least popular system, and it's underbaked in some areas.
I think it may be worth covering Total Immersion Racing as well. I similarly find that one criminally underrated, just like the Ford Racing titles I used to play a lot as a kid (glad you covered them sometimes ago ;) ). It's similar to this game and other sim racers, but does lack some of the niceties, notably the day/night cycle. But it had a good selection of cars (including a few bonus ones), good physics, plenty of tracks, different racing conditions which impacted handling, and so on. Too bad nobody seems to know, much less remember it.
This is the most underrated racing game, in the world
For a dreamcast game it's really impressive and the model cars really good but it's kinda sad that no one ever talk about this game because this game is really good really appreciate you make this video Dove you know give someone know about this series more
Tbh this game is quite good besides these two TDU games that I recently tried out on PC and PSP (except TDU 2 doesn't have a PSP port and I haven't tried out the sequel on PC). And yeah I had tried the PS1 version using emulator and it's pretty good looking Gran Turismo competitor but I still also like the PS1 GT games as well and eventually every GT games. And it's kind of a minor misoppoturnity if this game was missed out...
3:22 even though the PS2 version has its issues, they actually fixed the AI difficulty scaling problem in that version. I do not play on the hardest difficulty, but the dominant Dodge Vipers are always a force to be reckoned with in GT races
Hi Dove 7 I was just watching your GT4 video 😊
Definitely an intriguing little offshoot but a pity it wasn't expanded to some of the other endurance series out there like Nurburgring, Daytona, Spa or Sebring as that definitely would've helped a bit with variety.
How hard is it to mod games like this and add tracks?
Blows my mind how a game released on the Dreamcast back in the year 2000 featured better AI drivers than some modern racing games. This game 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 deserved to be in the top 100 racing games of all time.
Le Mans on the Dreamcast is simple amazing.
man!!!!!! that looks INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
25 cars on track holyyyy
if i rember correctly there a two games. the game you showed is the second game, and also there is a PS2 version but i´m not sure if they are the same game.the first one on pc is in my opinion a very nice game :)
Dreamcast title from 2000: Dynamic weather on all tracks.
GT7: ….
I love this game and the other version. It was confusing at first since both games shared the same title. But, I prefer the first version more due to nostalgia
Never knew about this game. I loved the first TDU game and played that one a lot. Was so excited for TDU2 back in the day but it turned out a massive disappointment. For me at least. This game clearly had ahead of its time.
The music for the Game Boy Color version goes harder than it has any right to...

try test drive 5 its awful in a fun way, has a great soundtrack though
ps2 version was better
more cars more tracks and most importantly you could actually save during the middle of a championship so you didnt have to do it all in one go
only thing the dreamcast does better is it has the toyota gt-one
