My hp envy lasted just about 5 years. Dropped 1 time and needed to fix the broken screen, touch pad out the window, but it still worked till the power button fell out - when it came back from Best Buy with a fixed screen and button, it wouldn’t turn on. They said the slimness around the ends and the feeble connection making 360 possible makes it not last and that i could replace the hard drive and see if that helps or buy a new laptop. I just need something that lasts
My *Macbook Pro 14 Pro* has to be the BEST laptop EVER! Almost full day battery, brilliant super HiRes screen, HiFi surround sound, great camera, mike, keyboard, MagSafe, build, quiet and fantastic I/O. I never was for multi-display workspaces based around a laptop, but this is as close to a perfect desktop set-up as it gets. All those brilliant Apple Apps that come with it and the current discounting make it a great buy and bargain.
With the gpu shortage and all the scalpers, it's actually worth considering getting a laptop instead of a desktop PC. $1500 for a laptop with a Ryzen 5800 and RTX 3060 is a reasonable price when a RTX 3060 graphics card alone is going for $900. The laptop performance won't be as good as desktop but laptops are getting really good and you'll be surprised how close they are to desktops.
This is the reason I’m looking at the ASUS Zephyrus G14. Incredible gaming-level power in a small, light form factor but with keyboard layout suitable for regular work. Sad that this wasn’t included in the review.
Got the macbook pro 16 for personal/creative/job use and the yoga 7 pro for school/coding as i needed a lighter and more compact laptop to take with me everyday, couldnt have been any happier, strongly agree with your picks
I am surprised that the Asus X13 Flow did not make the cut. Excellent screen, comes with the Ryzen 5900hs, GTX 1650, 16GB RAM, 1200P IPS 120hz touch screen, acts like a 2 in 1, weighs 1.35kg.
@@Ram99ize That's awesome! I got myself the 2022 version, it came last week. Battery lasts for 14+ hrs on usage, the screen is beautiful and bright, it's highly performant, and on silent mode the fans haven't turned on once. It's got a decent bit of ports too, and fingerprint sensor is an added plus, the storage is great and tablet mode really comes in handy while I'm in bed or travelling. It's truly a one of a kind.
Thanks, Josh. I get that RUclipsrs can’t review every laptop, but I wish more would consider moderate price ranges, as you regularly do. Hoping more will catch on to your great channel.
In my mind, you should buy a macbook Air unless you need more power, then get the Pro 14/16. If you hate macOS or are not willing to live with it's downsides (understandable), then I would honestly pick the X1 Carbon for most tasks unless I needed much more power then I would pick a high end MSI gaming laptop.
You gained a subscriber right now by talking about laptops for tech professionals/developers. I just don't know why virtually no manufacturer targets those people, since there are a lot of them out there, they make above average money and are willing to spend money on good laptops. It seems like everyone is a "content creator" nowadays.
I disagree with the macbook pro 13 choice. It's difficult to code on 8gb of unified ram so upgrades are almost a given. But then, for just $200 more you get the 14in which is A WAY better package in my opinion. And The air is SO close to the 13 pro, with only a tiny performance boost in favor of the pro. It really isn't worth it for most people. Or, At $1500 for 16gb 13in macbook pro, there are better Windows computers to be had. Something like the MSI Delta from Best Buy on Black Friday sale for $1200 is WAY better than the 13MBP. I get it, different strokes for different folks. But I also think it's REALLY easy to find better options than the 13MPB right now. TLDR: The air is great for casual and semi-professional use. But the 13MBP is the worst upgrade path(buying choice) available, in my opinion. Source: I own an Omen, 7i, MSI, GE and mine on each($300 from break even). Daily drive the 14in MBP but owned the Air for a year after returning the 13mbp. Love the video! I just notice you did fewer laptop reviews this year and perhaps, I think, you missed out on a few great laptops more deserving of these slots.
@@prantomon4647 I have a couple concerns. 1. Does your college strictly teach you within the Windows & Linux OS? If so, perhaps a macbook isn't the correct fit. 2. RAM. I would greenlight the macbook air 16gb ram for coding, but not the 8gb. Avoid the 8gb if you can. Most likely, you will feel the lack of ram much more than casual users. It is worth researching and figuring these concerns out for your situation!
Hey bro would love your advice. I’m currently suffering with an Acer i5 8th gen 1.4 turbo to 3.6 and 4gb ram. It’s hell on earth. I just bought an MBP 13” M1 512ssd 8gb ram for multiple reasons. 1) the hype, 2) the Mac OS and it’s user interface and user friendliness. 3) to be able to surface the web with a lot of tabs and switch between apps like discord and other things too. 4) another reason was because I just wanted to try Mac OS as I never have used it before. After watching this video I have a really big feeling I made a big mistake and should’ve bought a windows laptop with way better processing power and screen options. Would love your advice. BTW I’m not a software developer I will not be coding however I wanted a laptop that could facilitate my future endeavours of creating content and video editing aswell as web surfing and app switching with No hinderance at all as I can do nowhere near that with the current Acer I have. Reading what you said and after reading the other comments I feel I got sucked into the hype and ignored the scope of much better options in windows laptops. Help please
Amazing !!! I'd love it if you could also incorporate GIS work and modelisation for the performance of laptops but if you can't I understand as I know how much work you out in those videos. Keep up the good work Josh 💪🏻💪🏻😄
Great video, great recommendations (unfortunately, some I cannot buy in my country). It would be nice to see a review on Surface 8pro and Surface Studio. Personally, as a windows laptop user for 15 years plus, the MAC M1 series is the winner in all categories. It is amazing what Apple did about it, and I don't see any other manufacturer taking down the crown from Apple until 2023-24. For the next two years, I'm switching to Apple and I only use Microsoft products!
I’ve been thinking on buying a new laptop lately . Which is what brought me to watching these videos! Your knowledge motivates me even more to learn a bit more on this topic🤘
Sir is HP Aero 13(ryzen 7 5800u and Vega 8 graphics) better than Acer Swift X (ryzen 5 5600u and rtx 3050) considering I'm going to be mainly programming and using MS office?
Thanks for the great review! In my opinion, though, whenever you talk about MacBooks, it's crucial to mention that if, at any time, you'd need to fix your MacBook, you're probably going to have to spend tons of money - way more than should have been necessary - due to Apple's disgusting policies around repair. Also, I think it's important to emphasize that almost all components of a MacBook are (intentionally...) non-upgradable. That should also be mentioned, of course, for with some other laptops (like some of the Lenovo ones you've mentioned, which have their RAM soldered on), but with Apple, it's really their signature.
Was ready to buy Asus Swift X until I saw your video mentioning the low contrast keys. I checked a Swift 3 in the store and I think this issue is even worse for developers and creators who use lots of hotkeys. Most people can type text mostly using muscle memory but if you need to use the other keys then productivity can slow way down if you have to look closely to find a key in say Blender. Also the Swifts have really skinny right-angle (thus fragile) power plugs and I don't think it would survive even one accidental tug on the power cable.
You rock! I really appreciate all the reviews you put together, as it's been helping me narrow down my future laptop purchase. Also, I think we as viewers often overlook all the work it takes to put together a review video, so a big thank you for the all work that you do. Not sure how to give more "likes", but have a great holiday season and a happy new year! All the best!
I bought the Lenovo Legion 7 yesterday with a 3070, ryzen 7, 32 GB of RAM, and 2 TB of storage for $1,700 when the normal price is $2,350 I was able to combine a college student discount with a 20% off coupon with a hundred dollar off coupon
I'm considering Lenovo, I need a laptop for buisness purposes. I'm a laptop newbie, so I'm to too versed on them. Do you have a recommendation? Interested in 15.6 screen. Back lit key board. 16gb..
Thank you for this awesome video! I can't imagine how much effort you put into this video... This video is one of the best - if not the best - buying guide this year :) I just want to ask you something: are you planning to review the Asus Vivobook Pro 16X and/or the new Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 16inch?
I would of loved mention of battery time as I am going back to studies to learn programming. With a whole class having their own laptops not everyone will be able to have chargers at once (most likely).

Agreed with you on Omen, I buy Hp Omen 16(Intel i7 11800H RTX3070) mainly because it's powerful for both video editing on premiere and gaming but still portable enough for me. Been using it for 2 months and I don't have any regret buying this beast
So excited to watch it! Looking for a student laptop currently deciding between hp envy 14" i5H and Lenovo ideapad 7 pro i7-G We'll see what the video brings
Hi Josh. Great video!! Can you recommend longest battery life in actual use? I need >10hours. Casual use (browsing, office, a bit image editing -- but not video). Many thanks!
Excellent video. But a lot of these laptops simply don't meet my needs * centered keyboard/trackpad. I hate numpads on laptops. They make typing seem weird. And don't get me started on the non-centered trackpads as a result :) * display color accuracy. It's 2021, and some laptop makers are still making otherwise great laptops with shitty < 100% sRGB displays. No one should subject themselves to such crappy displays. * Good sound quality, at least 16:10, preferably 16", 1080p camera. That disqualifies a whole bunch of other laptops. * Finally, one reason why the MBP is not for me - upgradability. The laptops that have all of this - X1EG4, P1G4. Sure, performance is throttled, and fans are noisy, and battery life is subpar. But those are the compromises I have to live with for now :)
Very good video! But to be fair, $600 isn't exactly a budget starting point. It is certainly inexpensive compared to some offerings, but that's still really expensive for many people. Budget in my case meant at least half of where you started the list.
Debating between a Macbook Pro 16, Thinkpad P1/X1/P16s, Asus M16, XPS 17, or Razer Blade 17. If the Razer were 16x10 it'd be a no brainer but looks like I may end up with a Macbook again. The only no compromises machine.
Looking at 2 options. Best Buy has the HP Envy x360 (13m-bd1033dx) for $750 HP Store has the HP Pavilion Aero 13 with similar specs at $650. In your opinion, which one would be a better buy?
Thats fair, I do like them. I did try to do my best to avoid Intel Ultrabook processor's as much as I could unless there was something really unique and special about the laptop i.e. the Framework laptop or the Nano
I consume quite a bit of video content (not much for gaming and no video editing). Which one of these has good battery life? I feel like that was kind of brushed off, but for me is a key selling point.

Got the macbook pro 16 for personal/creative/job use and the yoga 7 pro for school/coding as i needed a lighter and more compact laptop to take with me everyday, couldnt have been any happier, strongly agree with your picks
Thanks for this well-outlined and well-tiered list, Josh!
I am surprised that the Asus X13 Flow did not make the cut.
Excellent screen, comes with the Ryzen 5900hs, GTX 1650, 16GB RAM, 1200P IPS 120hz touch screen, acts like a 2 in 1, weighs 1.35kg.
It's ignored by a lot of reviewers because they always go after recognizable lineups, many of these are objectively worse than the flow.
@@ThejusRao I completely agree with you. I got myself the 2021 X13 Flow. i can confirm it is one of the best laptops on the market.
@@ThejusRao That's awesome, welcome to the club! It truly is one of a kind and Asus has been really crushing it for the past few years.
Very informative and thorough video. You're definitely one of the top 3 laptop reviewers on RUclips.

Josh you absolute legend, appreciate you listening to the viewers and giving us what we want 👍🏾
LOL!!!!!!!!
I've watched a zillion laptop videos. this is the best so far thanks! nice and clear
You're by far the best tech guy I've found on the tube. I've been searching for you for years man!
What do you think about MacBook air for Computer science student?
Help please
@@Sam-oz8tw would love your advice
Legion 5 Pro gang. This is a phenomenal video. Very well done accounting very thoughtfully for different markets, needs and budgets.
Legion 7 was also a great option but I understand that just mentioning the Legion 5 Pro is probably enough.
Much awaited videos. Thanks Josh
Amazing !!!
I'd love it if you could also incorporate GIS work and modelisation for the performance of laptops but if you can't I understand as I know how much work you out in those videos.
Keep up the good work Josh 💪🏻💪🏻😄
I was out of the internet for a month due to my end semester exams. And yo, so many videos from you Josh Sir and they're all super duper good
Been waiting for a video for black friday for a while now, thanks!
This is the best laptop recommendation I have ever found. Thank you soooo much Josh you and Jarrod are my favourite laptop reviwers
As a developer, I've been using the Matebook 14 for 1 year and it's an incredible device for a price of around $700. It's sad not to see your review.
Macbook?
Huawei matebook
Thank you for the guide. Many laptop out there. Very confusing. You have given us better idea which to get.

I got my acer swift x cuz of your recommendation and I love it
Sir is HP Aero 13(ryzen 7 5800u and Vega 8 graphics) better than Acer Swift X (ryzen 5 5600u and rtx 3050) considering I'm going to be mainly programming and using MS office?
Yes-my Mac has been in the shop twice. Once for a bad battery and one piece broken inside-it was under AppleCare but the piece was $700
Fantastic video Josh
Thanks Alam

Ahh sorry. And I need a Windows laptop. Not Mac/Chromebook. Thankss again!
Great video, most details I've seen so far....
Power packed and 'slim' review.
Fantastic!! Bravo!! Thanks josh! Just.... awesome!
Great video as always. Awesome laptops mostly :)
Excellent video. But a lot of these laptops simply don't meet my needs
* centered keyboard/trackpad. I hate numpads on laptops. They make typing seem weird. And don't get me started on the non-centered trackpads as a result :)
* display color accuracy.
But those are the compromises I have to live with for now :)
fantastic video, clear concise information and well edited! Thank you for the recommendations!
Very good video! But to be fair, $600 isn't exactly a budget starting point. It is certainly inexpensive compared to some offerings, but that's still really expensive for many people. Budget in my case meant at least half of where you started the list.
Asus zenbook pro duo is my all time fave laptop - dual touch screens means I can't go back to a normal laptop
Debating between a Macbook Pro 16, Thinkpad P1/X1/P16s, Asus M16, XPS 17, or Razer Blade 17. If the Razer were 16x10 it'd be a no brainer but looks like I may end up with a Macbook again. The only no compromises machine.
Such a professional video. Thank you
