- In today's episode I want to take you through a journey of what it was like to train as a climber in the city of Bern during the 90s. I had the opportunity to explore a forbidden, secret guidebook of the area, and met up with @hannahmorrisbouldering and the @mammut crew to see what it was about!

You can check out thecrag. For our city a lot of people entered buildering spots. So it is the best site to use for that :)

We did this around 1980 and even before! We had no indoor climbing gyms, so in winter time in Trondheim we would go "buildering", i.e. climb on all sorts of building structures. The main building on NTH (now its called NTNU) is built out of big coarse blocks of stone, so there were all sorts of holds, not just in the mortar gaps but also on the blocks themselves.
Buildering isn't always popular with the locals/building owners, even if we never used chalk so we wouldn't leave any visible marks.
Personally I have had the police pull me down twice, under very different circumstances: The first was in Edinburgh on a really nice wall similar to the one in Trondheim and the policeman was a very nice (unarmed of course) British Constable: He told me very kindly to "please come down, you are climbing on The Bank of Scotland".
The second time was with two friends in the US, at night on a much more boring building, only it turned out to also be a bank: Within a minute we had 2 or 3 police cars that jumped the curb onto the grass to point their headlights at us, and the police officers all had their guns out.
Sounds like the USA to me! Sorry that was your experience of our country (American here), unfortunately it's all too common here.

That’s exactly how I trained in the 80s and 90s.
There’s a bridge in Nottingham called Trent Bridge. There are lots of traverses there. Some long and hard enough to be 8a routes.

I've been in a rock climbing gym probably 3 times in my life, and even though I had fun it obviously isn't something I'm passionate about.
5 minutes into the video I feel like this is all I want to do is climb stuff -- The story telling, the videography, the narration are just awesome. This video is a work of art.

It's nice to see a resurface of buildering after so long.
This is so interesting! It seems like there was a time, when bouldering could have become an urban sport if it had taken off before the dawn of gyms. I wonder if climbing becomes popular enough, we might see this sort of approach pop up again among more marginalized communities like parkour did.

Similarly from 31th of August to the 3rd of September there is a climbing festival in the old town of Frasassi, in Italy, where you can climb the medieval walls of the village.
This is awesome! So much more exciting and adventurous than your typical climbing gym climbing experience. Every city needs a guide book like this.

i tried some urban bouldering myself on just a few hidden places, kinda hard to get out with at least climbing shoes and go for it if you don't have a climbing friend group. But since i started climbing (not long ago) i always had that sense that you described "That, i could try to climb. And i want to."

This is simply my favorite climbing video ever. My favorite youtube climber and my favorite niche of the sport and my favorite style of video. Loved the history, the story, the character growth, the exploration, the film and storytelling - very cool direction, Emil. I can see all the intentionality in this and its a masterpiece.

Man how beautiful! I ve rewatched your monologues a couple times now. Frankly it was inspiring! In the world these days, it is just such a vital thing to get together like this and just strive to be more... us, human. theres just something so profound about moving the sesh to the city and breaking the rules. When you take away the pressure and grades, this intangible beauty of humans collaborating together to solve a problem becomes the focus. I really appreciate the unique spirit of the climbing world now. Its just us together against gravity. Masterpiece emil!

Love that video. As a youngster me and my best friends had a blast climbing in the city and the countryside in Austria where we grew up. Chimneyed up between buildings or tried to conquer the walls of old ruins or even deep water soloed above lakes. That really is the essence of climbing spirit. Having a good time, enjoying movement and exploring. Thats what climbing is all about at its best. Love the spirit of your video it really brings across your enjoyment.

Love this video, such a nice feel to it, makes me want to head out to find some lines. You get bonus points for using the clips of Pete's catpass pre when talking about parkour, highlighting the connections between the sports even more than a Toby clip would do!
I've been watching some Rafe Kelley clips lately too, parkour in the nature, and that feels like the other side of this same circle. Jumping on rocks, climbing on rocks, climbing on buildings, jumping on buildings. There's a fine line between climbing and parkour, and dynos can often be both.

As someone who trains parkour, it’s always interesting to see its overlaps with other sports such as climbing. Awesome challenges that are such a good blend between parkour and climbing movements. Makes me want to add more climbing aspects into my training. Great video man.

I remember this time I was with the mountain club waiting before climbing a multipitch route and there was this super cool wall on the street that looked like a fun slab problem. I was the first to try climb it and then a few others followed suit. We had a great time.

When I was 16 many years ago.I made a small guide book of climbing on bridges , viaduct and aquaduct in the small village I lived in. I wish I knew what happened to it.

Emil, your film making has come on so much, these documentary style shoots wouldn't be out of place in Reel rock and other film festivals. I always appreciate when people take a step back and realise that climbing is about having fun, pushing yourself is great but when you forget that its suppose to be for the joy of the climb and not just to post an insta with a bigger number in the caption is where its easy to fall into a toxic relationship with climbing.
So thanks for showing again that we're just big kids trying to move in the most fun way's we can think of.

Crazy video, crazy idea to talk about. It really teaches that it's possible to enjoy yourself even without planning trips to the other side of the world. Also, the idea of valuing the environment around us with what has to offers can be applied not only to climbing.

I loved this video! Very inspirational and so beautifully done.
As someone who is primarily a parkour athlete and just does a little climbing here and there, it has always surprised me how few climbers seem to be interested in urban climbing. Doing parkour teaches you to view absolutely everything as an obstacle to be attempted, as a puzzle to be solved. I think more climbers should start looking at the opportunities that exist all around them, rather than always being caught up in predetermined routes.

Urban climbing is my favorite type of climbing
Im back at my home town for the summer and no gym or outdoor site here. Im seeing the town differently, riding everywhere with my climbing shoes looking for a spot. Thats such a 90s teenagers vibe.

Listening to the breathing during the climb was actually really cool. Everyone always tells me breath breathe breathe! during climbing but for the big moves, holding breath and bracing is so much more useful
