Joined up with ASVAB scores that qualify me for every job in the Coast Guard and my first unit is great. I have options and knowledge and mobility and a lot of that is thanks to listening to you. Know that you are helping people.
My ASVAB score qualified me for every job in the CG as well ! I still need to go to meps to get my Medical Exam done. What rates did you consider with all the options on the table and which one did you end up picking ?
To all you young people just getting out of high school or still living at your parents house with minimal responsibilities, do yourselves a favor and get out and live life on your own for a few years. Learn what it is you want out of life and who you should choose to surround yourselves with. Experience taking on the full repercussions of any/all decisions you make, experience reaping what you sow. The Guard and military in general is a wonderful opportunity to get where you want in life, but at the same time if you have no goal or strong purpose you're gonna end up doing what most young coasties do: drinking, blowing money on things you don't need, and wasting years of time. On the flipside, if you are reading this and are ready to chase down your goals, stay with it! The CG is pretty fair, but at the end of the day "needs of the service" will come first so be adaptable, have backup plans and be ready to make sacrifices to get what you want. Take what you earn, know policy, help out your shipmates, and GET YOURS!..cause uncle sam is definitely getting his... Just wanted to share my thoughts looking back, since I just hit my 1 year mark being in. I don't watch all your vids, but thanks for sharing your knowledge Andre. Fair winds and following seas.
I served 22 years in the Coast Guard and saw exactly what you are talking about. I wanted to offer one additional piece of advice for those looking at which specialty they wish to do. If you are assigned to a cutter, you will do plenty of character building jobs. They are not glorifying, at times they are not exciting, but they are all worthwhile. Please, please, please do not choose a rate just to get off the boat. True story, a non rate on one of the cutters I was on decided to become a cook because they offered him a bonus and it was the fastest way for him to get transferred off the boat. He completed his school and got orders back to the same boat, now being locked in for 3 years at some place that he hated. Put in the time, the effort, do your homework. Be proud to be part of an amazing service.
@@wdardis10 I would say that he just needs to go in to any unit trying to learn as much as he can. Form his own opinion and learn what it means to be a "shipmate" on or off the job. Work hard, play hard, and use the GI Bill to get his degree. There may be times that things are rough, but is always temporary. Smoother seas are ahead. Prayers for this exciting new opportunity for him.
I saw that A LOT. Every rate has its advantages and disadvantages. If you just want to do your time and get your GI Bill, go for a critical rate and get a bonus and start earning that Petty Officer pay so you can have as much money possible for college. If you want to make a career out of the military, or want to learn a special trade, then work for the school you want. Get the necessary ASVAB scores, wait for the school to open, and make a name for yourself in the meantime as someone who can be depended on.
@Ian K.. But the other side of that coin is, now this person is rated. They don't have to put up with the same "bottom of the totem pole" mentality. And if this person came back as a PO, their experience will be even better. I remember back in the 80's, RM's were in short supply. Requesting RM "A" school to when you got orders was like 30 days. People would fail typing, go to YN/SK school (up the hill we called it) and graduate before people who stayed in RM school. Failing for code or typing was a motor skill so they held you till the next starting class (SS, YN, SK school) and off you go. You can't please everyone and the service much less Coast Guard isn't for everyone. If they just do their time, not cause any loss of life, then exit, that's the best case.
I respect you so much for this!! You’re a smart and honest guy. People think the military is an easy way out of “real life” but it’s not. It takes motivation, commitment, and hard work. Don’t be lazy. Study. My husband is in boot camp right, studied his ASS OFF for the ASVAB and passed with flying colors, and he is qualified for EVERY SINGLE JOB. Put in work and you’ll get rewarded back.

Thank you so much for the information that I have received from watching your videos, I didn’t realize that becoming a “ME” in the Coast Guard was so difficult to get. I am looking at other options before jointing such as other jobs as a back up for when I can’t become a “ME” such as a “BM” or “DC” in the Coast Guard.

Andre, i spent six years in the US Coast Guard in 1963 and was in till 1969. in those days you were assigned according to the needs of the Coast Guard. you made your three picks of where you wanted to go after boot camp. you got one of those three picks. my first duty station was a relief lightship at Cape May NJ i served on two lightships it was great duty i also was a lighthouse relief keeper , served on a 110ft ytm yard tug meadium and did two of the six years in port security at Governors island NY. i did love my time in the Coast Guard i started as a SA, than SN and SNBM there was no BM school in those days like there is today and than BM3. when i left the Coast Guard i went to work for the US Air Force as a civilian employee working in logistics did 20 years there and than did 10 years as a corrections office in the state prisons in Florida. the jobs i worked i got thanks to my Coast Guard service some of these young guys today don't seem to understand you have to work for what you want it's going to be handed to you. For those who wants to go MI Ive been doing that for 4 years now. While being in the coast guard i also got the privilege to go back to school and i studied automotive technology. When the time came to resign or take another path. I resign and asked to go to the MK (machinery Technician) Because i found out i like working on the machines more than being a cop. When Youre in, you wil grow and find out what you really want. Just enjoy your time. I made a career of the coast guard.
When I was a kid I always wanted to be a Navy Seal or a Marine because me and my Dad would always talk about it and connect through that together. When I got to highschool that changed, I was playing football since middle school and got really good at it, so my passion shifted. I got a scholarship but couldnt take it because of grades. So I played Community College ball and took up videography. Now here I am 3 years later looking to serve my country. My new goal in life is to become a K9 Handler Security Gaurd. I wanna join the Coast Gaurd Reserves, the recruiter said ME was a job as a reservist, would I have to wait as a reservist? What would be my best path?

Coasties get crapped on a lot, but they deserve respect. My grandpa was a Coasty, served in Vietnam as well as the Columbia River Bar and the Cape Dissapoinment Lighthouse. USCG is dope
The advice given is very sound. Before you approach the recruiter, pick up a $20 ASFAB study guide. My score was high enough to choose any CG rate, and instead of waiting a year for basic, I got orders to report to USCG Resort Cape May, that next Monday, giving me 3 days to pack and say goodbye. I also studied the navigational rules of the road and the Blue Jacket Manual (Coastguardsmans Manual), before going to basic, and memorized the general orders. Dispite your physical achievements your ranking is ɓased primarily upon your academic scores. I graduated Nr. 1 in my basic company which gave me 1st billet choice. The top 4 or 5 choose pretty much where they want to go. After that, they take your wish list into consideration, but it's needs of the Coast Guard. If you finish dead last, you're likely to get a buoy tender on Guam or Kansas City or if you're very lucky, a small boat station in the Louisiana bayou region. People who want to be close to home will choose places like ATON Chattanooga or Kansas City. Alaska, California, Hawaii and Southern Florida are always wanted by a lot of folks. If you want to patrol the Carribean, any WMEC cutter in the 7th district will put you there. Expect to be out about 5 weeks and back in port 4-5 weeks. Patrol boats are out for about a week at a time. Small boat stations are on the water all the time. Especially when you don't plan to be. The CG Motto, Semper Paratis means Always Ready. To be ready you have to prepare before hand. Whether it's preparing for ASFAB, or preparing your boat to quickly get underway, or preparing physically and mentally for basic, the more prepared you are, the more rewarding your career. Prepare beforehand and you will always be ready. Good luck.
All the "cool" ratings have a very long wait time. Back in 2005 one of those cool ratings was Marine Science Technician. That rating was a 2 year wait time for school, while some other rating that's not so "cool" like Yeoman (Human Resource) was only a 3-5 months wait time on the list. A recruiter should have already informed new recruits about the wait time before they enlist, so they don't waste everyone's time and dropped out of military because of a long wait time. Great video man, it's unfortunate that others didn't listen to your advice.
I'm a Marine vet and what my mans says is true for any branch. No 1 likes to study but that test is that 1 test you should invest time prepping because it opens you up to different opportunity.
A life pro tip I’ve heard to get around a long wait time for A school is to join the Honor Guard straight out of boot camp. The billet is two years and after you get you you are out at the top of your list for whatever school you want. I’m not sure if it applies to schools that have been closed, but if a school has a three year wait, it’s a good move. The only catch is that it has a height limit: 6 foot and up for men, 5’8 and up for women. I’ve talked to some people who did it and they said it was a really good time. The base is located in Alexandria, Virginia and you travel around the U.S. quite a bit to perform at different events.
Bottom line is this. DO NOT enlist without a guaranteed A school after boot camp. NO open contract where the service you enlist in can put you ANYWHERE they want to. You want to be a BM-get it writing, you want to be ME-get it in writing, you want to be a YN-get it in writing etc. Otherwise just walk away if they can't guarantee you your job choice.
Not how the Coast Guard works. You come in as a nonrate and then put your name on a wait list for the school of your choosing. Some schools are longer than others. Some are much longer (when I was a nonrate people were waiting 3 years or more years to go to PA school). Been in for 16 years now and never seen anyone forced into a rate.
The Coast Guard does not select your rate for you. That is what sets us apart from the other branches. I recommend open contracts so you can come in and select a rate based on your own experience. We will let you sit at E-3 for your entire four year enlistment if that's what you want to do but I don't recommend that.
@@Jake-be9ji If you join a reserve program they do. Boot camp followed by A school. Just make sure you let people know you are in the program if the school is overbooked. It happens.
Nah man. A lot of people get the wrong idea about the rate they wanna go. You cant know exactly what a rate does until you actually get out in the fleet and at least shadow somebody who has a rate you’re interested in. As they say, “chose your rate chose your fate.” It cant hurt to be a nonrate for a year or two just to discover yourself, your place, and your calling in the coast guard. Getting thrown into a rate straight out of boot camp is a bad move imo because as you know youll likely be stuck with that your whole career. Plus, i believe every enlisted should experience the grit of nonrate life for a while, adds character 💪🏼
As far as the ASVAB goes, you need to take it BEFORE you can join the military. The recruiter will tell you exactly what jobs you qualify for. If you don't like any of them, or if you don't qualify for the job you want, DON'T JOIN YET!! Study for the scores you need and take it again. There are plenty of study aids out there that you can buy at your local bookstore, check out at your local library, or find online. While I never saw my shipmates have any problems getting scheduled to re-take the ASVAB in my 25 years of Coast Guard service, it CAN sometimes be an issue depending on where you are stationed. DEFINITELY get the scores you need before you join. There's no point in joining at all if you cannot get the job you want. That being said, just because you know what job you want, that does not mean that you know what you want to do or what is best for you. I spent 2 years on a large cutter before I decided what rate I wanted as a job. I thought I wanted to be a BM when I joined, but as a non-rate on a cutter for 2 years, I got to see what each job actually does. I ended up going YN, and it was a pretty good 25 years. Looking back now (after being retired for 3 years), I am sorry that I didn't consider the EM rate.
Unfortunately I just found your channel ): I scored well on my ASVAB but unfortunately one of the 3 jobs I didn't qualify for was the job I really wanted. It didn't have a guaranteed A school so my recruiter told me to just go in anyways and to retake my ASVAB after finishing A school. She didn't mention it wasn't an easy thing to do so now I wish I would've waited and retaken it before signing my contract.
I’m 23 I’m lost I was working two part times and a full time before Covid and that was great I was making great money but unfortunately now for the time being I’m not working. I’ve been feeling so lost because I didn’t take the traditional college route right after hs so I have no degree. Do u think this is for me? Or any branch of military ?
I’m on the same path and I’m joining the coast guard bro. I highly suggest you do your research on the benefits. Plus the military will give a sense of purpose that you’re missing. I recommend joining ASAP
The Coast Guard does have a pretty good number of ratings (jobs) that are not combat arms. However, please remember that despite your job, you can still be called upon to pick up a weapon and do what needs to be done. If you identify yourself as some kind of "conscientious objector" no branch will allow you to enlist.
Go for it! Most of the jobs in the coast guard will not put you in a position to shoot or kill anyone. Youre not too old or too young. If you get a ship out of bootcamp, traveling the world with your boys, while also embracing the suck, creates such a strong camaraderie.
as a plankowner at TACLET SOUTH and a 15 year active MK...the GUARD is what you make it!! i was an OOD at 4 stations did a polar roller and a patrol boat...seen more than my share...
If you're looking to go maritime enforcement, BMs and mks can do the exact same jobs at taclet units and boarding teams, plus you have another field and skill on top of enforcement. I originally joined to go ME, and the wait was very long, so I wound up going mk and am a lot happier for it. I get to do what I love which is working with machinery and engines, plus I have a skill that applies to the civilian sector I. The future. Just think about the big picture people
Besides BM, you can also do "law enforcement" as a QM (Quartermaster), GM (Gunners mate), or other "deck" or "engineering" rates. MST (Marine Science Technician) will be Investigating oil and chemical spills, maritime accidents, etc... I was a PS (Port Securityman) in the 90s and that rating was absorbed into ME. I understand that the IV (Investigator) rating still exists, but it was & still is "reserve only".
I gotta ask because I'm looking into the USCG, would ITs be able to do the same tasks as MEs? I'm deciding between MK and IT at the moment and I do want some of these skills in addition to some law enforcement opportunities.
I was in the U.S. Coast Guard for 8 years 2002-2010 and it was awesome duty. USCG cutter Active (WMEC-618) USCGC Polar Sea ( WAGB-11) USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) and Lighthouse duty on Lake Superior in Michigan. Best time of my life. Semper Paratus! Oscar-163 Cape May, NJ.
Still true to this day in 2021. People so hung up with the ME rating but in reality both BM and MK do LE too. It's one of the jobs they do and honestly some of the best LE officers I have ever known were BM and MK. Doesn't preclude you from doing anything. Stations, 87 patrol boats, and other smaller units may have an ME but that doesn't mean you won't be engaged in the LE mission just because your not an ME. Take this from a retired MEC, there is more to the job than what you see on videos. Go in with an open mindset and then decide.

Something interesting to note - at MEPS I was talking to others joining the Coast Guard and I noticed my 66 was the lowest out of anybody I talked to. A 66 would be considered pretty high in most branches. I’ve never been book smart and have to work twice as hard as everybody else it seems like but I’m determined despite maybe not being as naturally smart as others
@@joshrogalsky Josh, my comment is straight forward, sure your score might get you In the door, but in the door is not what you should strive for, if for no other reason than to open up career opportunities. As you mentioned your current score is low among other Coasties, so stop right there and listen to what you just said. An AFQT is not a reflection of IQ, its merely a result of correct answers across a broad range of testing criteria. This is a score that can be heavily manipulated by a focused area of study, and time spent on testing familiarity, as well as techniques to achieve better scores, the same techniques used to " test better" anywhere like immediately identifying the 50% of the answers that are not possibly correct, and thus focusing on an educated guess on the ones remaining, time is important as well as % of correct answers. To address your other comment about " other " services, you aren't joining the other services, you are joining the single most competitive service there is, you will be testing against these folks as you promote, you think you work twice as hard now , just wait until you are trying to pin on your 2nd class. That Score is a composite score, it breaks down into line scores used to be eligible for various jobs. Even though I'm a simple Marine, my line scores were directly responsible for me securing the job(s) I wanted in my early career, ask your recruiter about General Technical, Mechanical, Electronic etc...ask what the " top" requirements are to hold the better jobs. Scores matter. I only had an AFQT of 89, but if I were 17 again I would have studied harder, longer to break that 90 threshold, nobody can talk shit to you if you pull a 90 on the ASVAB. I hope that helps a little, im not here to be a dick but I am here to say try harder, it matters. And don't waste your time with thoughts of " i can improve my score later " type of comments... you won't be presented that opportunity. Just make it a one and done thing.
@@JustAnotherJarhead Your answer bothers me for two reasons 1) It contradicts itself. On one hand you're saying "AFQT is not a reflection of IQ" which you're right about. But if that's the case it also does NOT determine a successful career. It just determines your rate and how book smart you are. There are things than cannot be quantified for such as determination, perseverance, leadership and the ability to connect with people. The ASVAB has no bearing on military success but it is exactly what it wrong with the education system - it tells people you have to fit "this box" or else. You think just because I will be testing against these folks in the future means I won't score just as high as them? There will be a completely different curriculum based on Coast Guard knowledge, not previous subjects learned in school that quite frankly is predicated on your ability to regurgitate information. Not saying the military isn't like that because sure you need to be able to spit out your required knowledge as well as what you learn in A-School but we're all starting out on the same level. 2) If you're insinuating I retake the ASVAB because I got a 66, first of all I plan on going SK which for that rate is a perfectly fine score, and second of all, you shouldn't be discouraging someone from achieving their goals just because you deem them to not be smart enough according to your standards. You know nothing about me and what I have overcome to get to this point. I don't give a shit about bragging rights. I care about having a successful Coast Guard career whether that be 4 or 20 years.

When I was in the CG, the rating was HS ( Health Science Technician). And you would be qualified as an Emergency Medical Technician - basic. You'll still need to go get your LPN or RN on your own. The CG did have a Physician Assistant program. You might want to look into that
I Joined the Guard in 1976...I had been working Fire/Rescue for about 5 years; When I talked with the Recruiter, I was told I could get Corpsman school straight out of Boot Camp! The first day of boot camp I found out there was at least a 2 year waiting list to get into that School! I literally wasted 4 years, 1 Month, and 11 Days of my Life!!! In boot Camp, I chose to go to Radio Man School, The ONLY School available right out of Boot Camp! I did not want to chip Paint for 2 years while waiting for Corpsman School. I achieved E-5 in Just over 2 years... but If you are not enjoying what you enjoy doing it doesn't matter your Rank!! Back in the 70's we were Not paid a living wage as an enlisted person! As an E-5 with 2 years, I was Paid $452/mo Now an E-5 is paid $2600.//Mo Moral of the Story, Nothing has changed in the Guard except the PAY!!!
ME is a joke on average. Maybe MSRT guys might do something other than train but 1% at best actually do anything. I was at MSST Boston and it was a joke. BM’s do way more risky jobs
M.E??? No such rate when I was in. All Coastie's did Law Enforcement regardless of rate. I was am EM...and I was sent to Modesto Police Academy for L.E. Training, while I was in C.G. I did 7 yrs in the C.G. and went straight into law enforcement ( police dept). Moved on from P.D. and now retired from the Justice Department. U.S.C.G.1980-1987 Sempra Paratus!
Algorithm sent me here. Gotta say at 1:25 I burst out laughing. ME has always had the problem of drawing in new recruits with the wrong idea. I once heard they were considering a change where ME started at E-5 as a lateral from experienced BMs or other Boarding Team Member rates. I wish they would go ahead with it. It can flatten the long ME A-School wait times and give ME hopefuls something more productive to do with their time than mess cooking for four years.
I took the ASVAB about two years ago, did little to no studying, and got a score of 70. I’ll be re-taking it soon to commission as an Officer in the Coast Guard. With some studying, I’ll definitely get over a 70.
That Guy oh I see it was easy for me to take mine but I’m joining any branch right now must depend on the state or area ur in studying is the way to do it I’m down to workout or study if ur in the area
That Guy I’m in California I didn’t need to study either I just took some time answering the questions it’s brain power seems like things are settling down a bit over there and you’ll be close to home during bt when you get to that stage good to be safe take precautions in the meantime you have plenty of time to figure out other things ur interested and are good at etc have funn there are good in these seemingly bad times

Me personally I would like to hear and learn about different individuals views, experience and advice regarding the coast guard reserves. I'm a reservist in the Coast Guard rn. Compared with boot camp, drilling is super relaxed. One weekend a month and I go to "A" school in June. They put me in a hotel on my drill days because I live 1:30 mins away, so it feels almost like a vacation.

@@Leek661 I'm only a non-rate right now, but I'm going to SK "A" school in June. Everyone at my unit is super helpful and friendly. All I really do is colors, mandated training, and cleanups. They let me leave early if the weather is bad sometimes. I'm really liking reservist life because I'm in the military, but also get to do my own thing in civilian life. College, work, etc. And military discounts are awesome. So many places give 10-15% if you have a military ID.
Darkbloodnight unyielding, I am Navy, but served in both Kuwait and Iraq with Coast Guard Reservist... they were GM, ME, MK, HS, and YN. I had a Sailor crossover from Navy Reserves to Active Duty Coast Guard and she loves it. I am working on getting her on my channel to share her experiences and the differences between the branches. I’m sorry to say this but I was told the wait time for ME and I wasn’t about to do that plus it wasn’t the job I wanted so I went with BM and you get alittle law enforcement work and you get time on the water plus your working on boats and such

Don't get why people nowadays are getting such poor scores on the asvab. I was not a great high school student. I was a much better college student because the military taught me discipline and time management. However study before you take the asvab..math.logic etcs. Study.
@@blackbeans7151 MK is Machinery Technician, shipboard & small boat mechanics. Primary responsibility is maintaining the engine room & Auxiliary equipment. BM is Boatswains Mate. They are the navigators and small boat coxswains. BM's are responsible for maintaining everything above deck. Lots of painting. These are the two ratings that basically run the afloat community. BM's are groomed to be in command of units at Senior levels while MK's are groomed to eventually run the Engineering Departments of the same units. Both jobs will require you to be LE qualified at small boat stations and patrol boats. Many more options for diversity in these two jobs as opposed to ME.
Gabriel Boyce, great advice! I served (Navy ) in both Kuwait and Iraq with Coast Guard MK and BM and yes, they did law enforcement - VBSS (Visit, Board, Search & Seizure) 👍
BM has potential for many different types of jobs. Boarding teams, navigation, search and rescue... biggest rate there is. Overall and probably the most important role of the BM is being the "face" of the Coast Guard. Up to you if you will be the conceited, lazy, slob OR the squared away, life saving, master of tradition. if you don't mind being called a glorified non-rate babysitter, BM could be for you.

A little late, but how high do you have to score to get every job ? Is a 48+ enough ?
To all you young people just getting out of high school or still living at your parents house with minimal responsibilities, do yourselves a favor and get out and live life on your own for a few years. Learn what it is you want out of life and who you should choose to surround yourselves with. Experience taking on the full repercussions of any/all decisions you make, experience reaping what you sow. The Guard and military in general is a wonderful opportunity to get where you want in life, but at the same time if you have no goal or strong purpose you're gonna end up doing what most young coasties do: drinking, blowing money on things you don't need, and wasting years of time.
On the flipside, if you are reading this and are ready to chase down your goals, stay with it! The CG is pretty fair, but at the end of the day "needs of the service" will come first so be adaptable, have backup plans and be ready to make sacrifices to get what you want. Take what you earn, know policy, help out your shipmates, and GET YOURS!..cause uncle sam is definitely getting his... Just wanted to share my thoughts looking back, since I just hit my 1 year mark being in. I don't watch all your vids, but thanks for sharing your knowledge Andre. Fair winds and following seas.

I served 22 years in the Coast Guard and saw exactly what you are talking about. I wanted to offer one additional piece of advice for those looking at which specialty they wish to do. If you are assigned to a cutter, you will do plenty of character building jobs. They are not glorifying, at times they are not exciting, but they are all worthwhile. Please, please, please do not choose a rate just to get off the boat. True story, a non rate on one of the cutters I was on decided to become a cook because they offered him a bonus and it was the fastest way for him to get transferred off the boat. He completed his school and got orders back to the same boat, now being locked in for 3 years at some place that he hated. Put in the time, the effort, do your homework. Be proud to be part of an amazing service.

@@wdardis10 I would say that he just needs to go in to any unit trying to learn as much as he can. Form his own opinion and learn what it means to be a "shipmate" on or off the job. Work hard, play hard, and use the GI Bill to get his degree. There may be times that things are rough, but is always temporary. Smoother seas are ahead.

I saw that A LOT. Every rate has its advantages and disadvantages. If you just want to do your time and get your GI Bill, go for a critical rate and get a bonus and start earning that Petty Officer pay so you can have as much money possible for college. If you want to make a career out of the military, or want to learn a special trade, then work for the school you want. Get the necessary ASVAB scores, wait for the school to open, and make a name for yourself in the meantime as someone who can be depended on.
@Ian K.. But the other side of that coin is, now this person is rated. They don't have to put up with the same "bottom of the totem pole" mentality. And if this person came back as a PO, their experience will be even better. I remember back in the 80's, RM's were in short supply. Requesting RM "A" school to when you got orders was like 30 days. People would fail typing, go to YN/SK school (up the hill we called it) and graduate before people who stayed in RM school. Failing for code or typing was a motor skill so they held you till the next starting class (SS, YN, SK school) and off you go. You can't please everyone and the service much less Coast Guard isn't for everyone. If they just do their time, not cause any loss of life, then exit, that's the best case.

Andre, i spent six years in the US Coast Guard in 1963 and was in till 1969. in those days you were assigned according to the needs of the Coast Guard. you made your three picks of where you wanted to go after boot camp. you got one of those three picks. my first duty station was a relief lightship at Cape May NJ i served on two lightships it was great duty i also was a lighthouse relief keeper , served on a 110ft ytm yard tug meadium and did two of the six years in port security at Governors island NY. i did love my time in the Coast Guard i started as a SA, than SN and SNBM there was no BM school in those days like there is today and than BM3. when i left the Coast Guard i went to work for the US Air Force as a civilian employee working in logistics did 20 years there and than did 10 years as a corrections office in the state prisons in Florida. the jobs i worked i got thanks to my Coast Guard service some of these young guys today don't seem to understand you have to work for what you want it's going to be handed to you. Coasties get crapped on a lot, but they deserve respect. My grandpa was a Coasty, served in Vietnam as well as the Columbia River Bar and the Cape Dissapoinment Lighthouse. USCG is dope
The advice given is very sound. Before you approach the recruiter, pick up a $20 ASFAB study guide. My score was high enough to choose any CG rate, and instead of waiting a year for basic, I got orders to report to USCG Resort Cape May, that next Monday, giving me 3 days to pack and say goodbye. I also studied the navigational rules of the road and the Blue Jacket Manual (Coastguardsmans Manual), before going to basic, and memorized the general orders. Dispite your physical achievements your ranking is ɓased primarily upon your academic scores. I graduated Nr. 1 in my basic company which gave me 1st billet choice. The top 4 or 5 choose pretty much where they want to go. After that, they take your wish list into consideration, but it's needs of the Coast Guard. If you finish dead last, you're likely to get a buoy tender on Guam or Kansas City or if you're very lucky, a small boat station in the Louisiana bayou region. People who want to be close to home will choose places like ATON Chattanooga or Kansas City. Alaska, California, Hawaii and Southern Florida are always wanted by a lot of folks. If you want to patrol the Carribean, any WMEC cutter in the 7th district will put you there. Expect to be out about 5 weeks and back in port 4-5 weeks. Patrol boats are out for about a week at a time. Small boat stations are on the water all the time. Especially when you don't plan to be. The CG Motto, Semper Paratis means Always Ready. To be ready you have to prepare before hand. Whether it's preparing for ASFAB, or preparing your boat to quickly get underway, or preparing physically and mentally for basic, the more prepared you are, the more rewarding your career. Prepare beforehand and you will always be ready. Good luck.
All the "cool" ratings have a very long wait time. Back in 2005 one of those cool ratings was Marine Science Technician. That rating was a 2 year wait time for school, while some other rating that's not so "cool" like Yeoman (Human Resource) was only a 3-5 months wait time on the list. A recruiter should have already informed new recruits about the wait time before they enlist, so they don't waste everyone's time and dropped out of military because of a long wait time. Great video man, it's unfortunate that others didn't listen to your advice.
I'm a Marine vet and what my mans says is true for any branch. No 1 likes to study but that test is that 1 test you should invest time prepping because it opens you up to different opportunity.

A life pro tip I’ve heard to get around a long wait time for A school is to join the Honor Guard straight out of boot camp. The billet is two years and after you get you you are out at the top of your list for whatever school you want. I’m not sure if it applies to schools that have been closed, but if a school has a three year wait, it’s a good move. The only catch is that it has a height limit: 6 foot and up for men, 5’8 and up for women. I’ve talked to some people who did it and they said it was a really good time. The base is located in Alexandria, Virginia and you travel around the U.S. quite a bit to perform at different events.

if your college offers an ROTC program you can do that and enlist as an officer off the bat.
Bottom line is this. DO NOT enlist without a guaranteed A school after boot camp. NO open contract where the service you enlist in can put you ANYWHERE they want to. You want to be a BM-get it writing, you want to be ME-get it in writing, you want to be a YN-get it in writing etc. Otherwise just walk away if they can't guarantee you your job choice.

Not how the Coast Guard works. You come in as a nonrate and then put your name on a wait list for the school of your choosing. Some schools are longer than others. Some are much longer (when I was a nonrate people were waiting 3 years or more years to go to PA school). Been in for 16 years now and never seen anyone forced into a rate.
The Coast Guard does not select your rate for you. That is what sets us apart from the other branches. I recommend open contracts so you can come in and select a rate based on your own experience. We will let you sit at E-3 for your entire four year enlistment if that's what you want to do but I don't recommend that.

Nah man. A lot of people get the wrong idea about the rate they wanna go. You cant know exactly what a rate does until you actually get out in the fleet and at least shadow somebody who has a rate you’re interested in. As they say, “chose your rate chose your fate.” It cant hurt to be a nonrate for a year or two just to discover yourself, your place, and your calling in the coast guard. Getting thrown into a rate straight out of boot camp is a bad move imo because as you know youll likely be stuck with that your whole career. Plus, i believe every enlisted should experience the grit of nonrate life for a while, adds character 💪🏼
As far as the ASVAB goes, you need to take it BEFORE you can join the military. The recruiter will tell you exactly what jobs you qualify for. If you don't like any of them, or if you don't qualify for the job you want, DON'T JOIN YET!! Study for the scores you need and take it again. There are plenty of study aids out there that you can buy at your local bookstore, check out at your local library, or find online. While I never saw my shipmates have any problems getting scheduled to re-take the ASVAB in my 25 years of Coast Guard service, it CAN sometimes be an issue depending on where you are stationed. DEFINITELY get the scores you need before you join. There's no point in joining at all if you cannot get the job you want.
That being said, just because you know what job you want, that does not mean that you know what you want to do or what is best for you. I spent 2 years on a large cutter before I decided what rate I wanted as a job. I thought I wanted to be a BM when I joined, but as a non-rate on a cutter for 2 years, I got to see what each job actually does. I ended up going YN, and it was a pretty good 25 years. Looking back now (after being retired for 3 years), I am sorry that I didn't consider the EM rate.
Why do you say that about the EM rate? Does it have many benefits?
Unfortunately I just found your channel ): I scored well on my ASVAB but unfortunately one of the 3 jobs I didn't qualify for was the job I really wanted. It didn't have a guaranteed A school so my recruiter told me to just go in anyways and to retake my ASVAB after finishing A school. She didn't mention it wasn't an easy thing to do so now I wish I would've waited and retaken it before signing my contract.

The Coast Guard does have a pretty good number of ratings (jobs) that are not combat arms. However, please remember that despite your job, you can still be called upon to pick up a weapon and do what needs to be done. If you identify yourself as some kind of "conscientious objector" no branch will allow you to enlist.
Go for it! Most of the jobs in the coast guard will not put you in a position to shoot or kill anyone. Youre not too old or too young. If you get a ship out of bootcamp, traveling the world with your boys, while also embracing the suck, creates such a strong camaraderie.

If you're looking to go maritime enforcement, BMs and mks can do the exact same jobs at taclet units and boarding teams, plus you have another field and skill on top of enforcement. I originally joined to go ME, and the wait was very long, so I wound up going mk and am a lot happier for it. I get to do what I love which is working with machinery and engines, plus I have a skill that applies to the civilian sector I. The future. Just think about the big picture people

What would the civilian sector entail?
Besides BM, you can also do "law enforcement" as a QM (Quartermaster), GM (Gunners mate), or other "deck" or "engineering" rates. MST (Marine Science Technician) will be Investigating oil and chemical spills, maritime accidents, etc... I was a PS (Port Securityman) in the 90s and that rating was absorbed into ME. I understand that the IV (Investigator) rating still exists, but it was & still is "reserve only".
I gotta ask because I'm looking into the USCG, would ITs be able to do the same tasks as MEs? I'm deciding between MK and IT at the moment and I do want some of these skills in addition to some law enforcement opportunities.

Still true to this day in 2021. People so hung up with the ME rating but in reality both BM and MK do LE too. It's one of the jobs they do and honestly some of the best LE officers I have ever known were BM and MK. Doesn't preclude you from doing anything. Stations, 87 patrol boats, and other smaller units may have an ME but that doesn't mean you won't be engaged in the LE mission just because your not an ME. Take this from a retired MEC, there is more to the job than what you see on videos. Go in with an open mindset and then decide.

Something interesting to note - at MEPS I was talking to others joining the Coast Guard and I noticed my 66 was the lowest out of anybody I talked to. A 66 would be considered pretty high in most branches. I’ve never been book smart and have to work twice as hard as everybody else it seems like but I’m determined despite maybe not being as naturally smart as others
@@joshrogalsky Josh, my comment is straight forward, sure your score might get you In the door, but in the door is not what you should strive for, if for no other reason than to open up career opportunities. As you mentioned your current score is low among other Coasties, so stop right there and listen to what you just said. An AFQT is not a reflection of IQ, its merely a result of correct answers across a broad range of testing criteria. This is a score that can be heavily manipulated by a focused area of study, and time spent on testing familiarity, as well as techniques to achieve better scores, the same techniques used to " test better" anywhere like immediately identifying the 50% of the answers that are not possibly correct, and thus focusing on an educated guess on the ones remaining, time is important as well as % of correct answers. To address your other comment about " other " services, you aren't joining the other services, you are joining the single most competitive service there is, you will be testing against these folks as you promote, you think you work twice as hard now , just wait until you are trying to pin on your 2nd class. That Score is a composite score, it breaks down into line scores used to be eligible for various jobs. Even though I'm a simple Marine, my line scores were directly responsible for me securing the job(s) I wanted in my early career, ask your recruiter about General Technical, Mechanical, Electronic etc...ask what the " top" requirements are to hold the better jobs. Scores matter. I only had an AFQT of 89, but if I were 17 again I would have studied harder, longer to break that 90 threshold, nobody can talk shit to you if you pull a 90 on the ASVAB. I hope that helps a little, im not here to be a dick but I am here to say try harder, it matters. And don't waste your time with thoughts of " i can improve my score later " type of comments... you won't be presented that opportunity. Just make it a one and done thing.

But if that's the case it also does NOT determine a successful career. It just determines your rate and how book smart you are. There are things than cannot be quantified for such as determination, perseverance, leadership and the ability to connect with people. The ASVAB has no bearing on military success but it is exactly what it wrong with the education system - it tells people you have to fit "this box" or else. You think just because I will be testing against these folks in the future means I won't score just as high as them? There will be a completely different curriculum based on Coast Guard knowledge, not previous subjects learned in school that quite frankly is predicated on your ability to regurgitate information. Not saying the military isn't like that because sure you need to be able to spit out your required knowledge as well as what you learn in A-School but we're all starting out on the same level. 2) If you're insinuating I retake the ASVAB because I got a 66, first of all I plan on going SK which for that rate is a perfectly fine score, and second of all, you shouldn't be discouraging someone from achieving their goals just because you deem them to not be smart enough according to your standards. You know nothing about me and what I have overcome to get to this point. I don't give a shit about bragging rights. I care about having a successful Coast Guard career whether that be 4 or 20 years.

When I was in the CG, the rating was HS ( Health Science Technician). And you would be qualified as an Emergency Medical Technician - basic. You'll still need to go get your LPN or RN on your own. The CG did have a Physician Assistant program. You might want to look into that

I Joined the Guard in 1976...I had been working Fire/Rescue for about 5 years; When I talked with the Recruiter, I was told I could get Corpsman school straight out of Boot Camp! The first day of boot camp I found out there was at least a 2 year waiting list to get into that School! I literally wasted 4 years, 1 Month, and 11 Days of my Life!!! In boot Camp, I chose to go to Radio Man School, The ONLY School available right out of Boot Camp! I did not want to chip Paint for 2 years while waiting for Corpsman School. I achieved E-5 in Just over 2 years... but If you are not enjoying what you enjoy doing it doesn't matter your Rank!! Back in the 70's we were Not paid a living wage as an enlisted person! As an E-5 with 2 years, I was Paid $452/mo Now an E-5 is paid $2600.//Mo Moral of the Story, Nothing has changed in the Guard except the PAY!!!

M.E??? No such rate when I was in. All Coastie's did Law Enforcement regardless of rate. I was am EM...and I was sent to Modesto Police Academy for L.E. Training, while I was in C.G. I did 7 yrs in the C.G. and went straight into law enforcement ( police dept). Moved on from P.D. and now retired from the Justice Department. U.S.C.G.1980-1987 Sempra Paratus!

Algorithm sent me here. Gotta say at 1:25 I burst out laughing. ME has always had the problem of drawing in new recruits with the wrong idea. I once heard they were considering a change where ME started at E-5 as a lateral from experienced BMs or other Boarding Team Member rates. I wish they would go ahead with it. It can flatten the long ME A-School wait times and give ME hopefuls something more productive to do with their time than mess cooking for four years.
Join as an officer or enlisted?
I took the ASVAB about two years ago, did little to no studying, and got a score of 70. I’ll be re-taking it soon to commission as an Officer in the Coast Guard. With some studying, I’ll definitely get over a 70.

That Guy oh I see it was easy for me to take mine but I’m joining any branch right now must depend on the state or area ur in studying is the way to do it I’m down to workout or study if ur in the area
Nah Mos I live in New York City, the epicenter of the virus. I got a 70 about two years ago with almost no studying
That Guy I’m in California I didn’t need to study either I just took some time answering the questions it’s brain power seems like things are settling down a bit over there and you’ll be close to home during bt when you get to that stage good to be safe take precautions in the meantime you have plenty of time to figure out other things ur interested and are good at etc have funn there are good in these seemingly bad times

What’s up Andre! Can you make videos and interviews with individuals about the coast guard reserves. Information about the Coast Guard Reserves are little to none on RUclips. Me personally I would like to hear and learn about different individuals views, experience and advice regarding the coast guard reserves. Love how you keep things real on your channel regarding the cost guard.
I'm a reservist in the Coast Guard rn. Compared with boot camp, drilling is super relaxed. One weekend a month and I go to "A" school in June. They put me in a hotel on my drill days because I live 1:30 mins away, so it feels almost like a vacation.

@@Leek661 I'm only a non-rate right now, but I'm going to SK "A" school in June. Everyone at my unit is super helpful and friendly. All I really do is colors, mandated training, and cleanups. They let me leave early if the weather is bad sometimes. I'm really liking reservist life because I'm in the military, but also get to do my own thing in civilian life. College, work, etc. And military discounts are awesome. So many places give 10-15% if you have a military ID.

Darkbloodnight unyielding, I am Navy, but served in both Kuwait and Iraq with Coast Guard Reservist... they were GM, ME, MK, HS, and YN. I had a Sailor crossover from Navy Reserves to Active Duty Coast Guard and she loves it. I am working on getting her on my channel to share her experiences and the differences between the branches.

I’m sorry to say this but I was told the wait time for ME and I wasn’t about to do that plus it wasn’t the job I wanted so I went with BM and you get alittle law enforcement work and you get time on the water plus your working on boats and such

Don't get why people nowadays are getting such poor scores on the asvab. I was not a great high school student. I was a much better college student because the military taught me discipline and time management. However study before you take the asvab..math.logic etcs. Study.

@@blackbeans7151 MK is Machinery Technician, shipboard & small boat mechanics. Primary responsibility is maintaining the engine room & Auxiliary equipment.
BM is Boatswains Mate. They are the navigators and small boat coxswains. BM's are responsible for maintaining everything above deck. Lots of painting. These are the two ratings that basically run the afloat community. BM's are groomed to be in command of units at Senior levels while MK's are groomed to eventually run the Engineering Departments of the same units. Both jobs will require you to be LE qualified at small boat stations and patrol boats. Many more options for diversity in these two jobs as opposed to ME.

BM has potential for many different types of jobs. Boarding teams, navigation, search and rescue... biggest rate there is. Overall and probably the most important role of the BM is being the "face" of the Coast Guard. Up to you if you will be the conceited, lazy, slob OR the squared away, life saving, master of tradition. if you don't mind being called a glorified non-rate babysitter, BM could be for you.
