Also, the officer Corp will heavily vary based on the branch in terms of competitiveness. The smaller the branch, the more competition you will face and the boards will be more selective.
So Air Force would be more competitive then the army for example?

My dad encourages me to be an officer after I finish college but I kinda prefer to be the one that fought in the frontline like the enlist even though officers get better wage,quite indecisive
My dad was enlisted in the coast guard, I’m torn between officer and enlisted. I really want to be on the front lines protecting my country and the people in it. The wages are better for officer i know that which is nice but the competition vibe is kinda like drawing me towards enlisted.
If you have the chance to become a officer then flipping become an officer, you say that you want to fight on the frontline but that is what officers do for at least 10 years of there career before they go into complete command roles. Enlisted means that you are being told what to do every day for your whole career, if you work as enlisted for 20 years you will still be lead on the front line by a fresh officer out of training. A extremely experienced enlisted soldier is still below the worst officer rank. This guy obviously has no clue about what is going on and he is saying that all officers just sit behind on at the back and do the strategic but no, officers are at the front line fighting alongside the enlisted and leading them, you only sit at the back towards the end of your career.
An infantry 2nd lieutenant will definitely be out there with his platoon. They don’t just commission then dive head first behind a $3000 desk and play with clapper lights
if we're being honest though frontlines don't really exist in a fight against insurgents. troops can get ambushed and blown by ieds anywhere and so any position in the military is considered front lines
If your dad is paying for your college dont spit in his face by going enlisted. Be an officer. If you wanna be on the front lines then get a combat job and go special ops
As someone who is turning to the military for a education officer seems very enticing but the seeming risk or instability of it scares me

I prefer to go the officer route. I'm gonna sign up for rotc next fall. I figured the military is hard any way you go, so why not take the riskiest path and succeed? Don't settle for easy, you won't get far.

There is two ways to progress in live, just like in the military. The slow but easy one (enlisted) or the hard but better that will help you achieve e brighter future ( officer) *go to college and secure a career.
I had no choice, if I could restart I would be an officer they look more happier and get better treatment.

I got a Bachelor's and I am going ENLISTED because I am sick and tired of college. I wish i would have entered into the military years ago but i was only pleasing my parents by going to college. Plus, I am sick and tired of studying and it burned me tf out. I will only study and go to school when the military NEEDS me too. other than that, good video.

@@krane15 how is that funny? I felt like I was living their life every day and not mine. Happiness comes first and you never went to the college I attended too and live in the city I am living at right now. So I stand true of what I said, "pleasing my parents" and I was never happy and I stand true of what I said earlier.

What are the pros of officers vs enlisted? So far I'm getting better pay and benefits, more options for career advancement, and jobs that require and expect skill in designing and critiquing planning and protocol. That's how my brain works, I like viewing the system and seeing where it's flaws and strengths lie. Thoughts?
He's giving you the pros and cons. Your brain just has to organize them. Let me make it simple: upper tier, officers. Lower tier, enlisted.
I currently am going to graduate from college this Friday and spoke to an officer about going that route... the job requirements were a lot and not saying I cant do it but it was jobs that I didn't even like. I am thinking about going enlisted route because theres a little more freedom with choosing my career for my future and I also want to get my masters after so. its all still a lot to process but I think enlisted might be my route.
Everybody at some point are going to be doing jobs they don't like. That's not just true about the military, but civilian jobs as well. Good news, you won't have to do it forever. Just consider it a step to get to where you want to be.
@@krane15 well yea. Duh. However a civilian job you can quit and walk off from whenever you decide you've had enough. To be in the military and sign over years of your life and freedom? You damn right try your best to find something you're remotely interested in.
If people have a degree I don’t get why they would go enlisted. I’m trying to go Air Force for a flight rated position. OCS application should be pretty strong considering GPA and prior flight hours.

I'm a current Coast Guard Auxiliarist, former Army enlisted, considering going Coast Guard Reserve as an officer; would it be better to go in enlisted then go Officer, or go straight to officer?

I liked this video for a few reasons. As former enlisted, I always sense this undercurrent in similar videos that any enlisted who doesn’t go OCS is inherently lazy, dumb, or unmotivated. I realized that I wouldn’t like going the officer route because I knew that I’d hate having to deal with all the politics that involve getting promoted beyond O-3. Frankly, the ones who are really dumb are the ones who can’t get past the minimum ASVAB scores. It’s the easiest test in the world.
I don’t think the money is such a thing because if you want money you shouldn’t be there in the first place. The military isn’t the road to riches for anyone if you compare them to their civilian counterparts.
I’m currently looking into Army National guard in my area to dip my toes into the idea of the military (more like waist deep). I’m a junior in Highschool I want to start in an Aviation Mos. I was talking to a retired enlisted Airforce guy who brought up coast guard aviation. I still want to join the National guard for college. Would past experience in other branches be helpful when looking towards Commissioning through OCS in a completely different branch?

Currently I have a Bachelors in Sciences and also a Doctorate in Medicine(working on getting the USMLE steps) my question is: You can join as an enlisted active duty as a Health Tech and continue studying to pass the steps and then switch and apply for Direct Commission or is better have everything first and then join?
If you want to fly aircraft in the Air Force, you have to be an officer! The Army allows Warrants to fly Helos, not sure about the Navy and Marines, but I know that enlisted do not fly!
@9:00 what do you mean you get cut? like you as an officer that does not have a masters yet get demoted back to enlisted or get kicked out the military? or like you're enlisted and dont make the cut to be an officer?
I guess he didn't realize he was using a CG nomenclature. Officers don't get demoted to enlisted.

BMs and nonrates do those things as well and can get a captains license.
I know that to be a pilot in the CG you need to be an officer first. I’m assuming that is a lot more technical role to play as an officer. What would “performing” in that role entail if I wanted to make a career out of being a pilot for the CG
I’m still in high school but I’ve spoken to a few pilots and rescue swimmers at my air station and the pilots job will always be flying on a normal basis, but you have other responsibilities like communications, so you get to learn and work with all the radio systems for a bit. You can also do public affairs and run the social media and organize events

So I’m currently in college getting my BA in education. The issue I have is I’ve seen many videos saying officers should be in majors within STEM. So my question is does your major really make a difference even if I would have my BA? Love your vids very helpful.

It depends on which branch and job you want. You may need a STEM degree to be an officer in certain career fields like medical or cybersecurity. Officers in combat arms jobs like infantry and field artillery usually don't need specific degrees.
What does it mean when you say cut from the officer corp? Do you return to being an enlisted member?
If you were enlisted prior to being an officer you'd have the option of returning to enlisted. If you were never considered enlisted, then you'd be discharged. It's something like if you don't promote the first or second round, you will be discharged. Similar to enlisted with hyt points where you have a certain amount of years to make rank.
I understand the logic behind it, but why force officers excellent in their current job to take on managerial jobs they aren't as good at or don't want to take? Enlisted has warrant to look forward to on the technical side. Why don't officers have a similar system?
What is the quality of life like as an enlisted coastie? I have a 4 year college degree, but I think my chances of getting admitted into OCS are slim because I don't have a STEM or medical related degree. My recruiter also told me the "cooler" and hands-on jobs are not really what officers will be doing. Just want your opinion if you think enlisting after having a 4 year degree would be a mistake. The recruiters will say that sometimes because they have a quota to fill for enlisted members.

Good question. If you go straight to being an officer you get kicked out. If you go enlisted to warrant to officer i've heard you can be moved back to a warrant position.
It’s hard to give a fair review of Officer vs Enlisted , unless you’ve done both. And even better, experience in multiple rates/MOS/AFSCs… Enlisted combat rates are good for the traditional “military experience” (infantry, expeditionary, Spec Warfare, etc) . I would not want to be enlisted maintenance/admin/worker bee jobs, as you’ll be putting up with a lot of BS. Officers generally get the “high skilled” jobs like pilots/SWO/medical/lawyer/etc. In other jobs , Officers take on manager and leader roles (paperwork, meetings and less hands on actual task being done)… Generally I’d advised if you have a degree , try to go Officer ; unless your desire is the 1st enlisted experience I mentioned (direct combat rates) or straight out HS & no degree.

Kind of corporate America. The skilled person does all the labor and is the work force and gets paid little money while the people that make the big bucks don’t do as much
Are there any enlisted opportunities that actually pay a decent wage? All I'm seeing is
Nobody joins the military (at any level) for the wage. You do it for the fringe benefits -- and they are extensive.
The big bump in pay as an enlisted person really comes from when you finally get to move off base and get the BAH as you can pocket what you dont use each month. My recruiter out here in CA gets about 2K each month to pay for housing but his mortgage is only 1200. So he's putting equity into a house plus getting another 200 every week. But BAH is also something like 3 years in though if you dont sign a 6 year or have a degree. I have a BS but am planning to go in as enlisted as I'll automatically be E-3 and since most of the 1st year will be spent at basic and tech school, I won't have to live on base at my first duty station that long before i can move out and get the BAH.
The jobs I’m looking at in the Coast Guard that I want to do are mainly enlisted, however I have the desire to make a career in the military. Mainly want to do more law enforcement oriented stuff and be in the field. Would it be a possibility to do enlisted stuff while I’m young (in my prime you could say) then get a degree and become commissioned or would it be better to get a degree then enlist?

James officers are more bureaucratic, paper pushers, analyzers, and planners. Enlisted are the people you see on the military videos actually performing the job. There are fewer officer videos that are tantalizing because it's pretty boring.

I want to enlist in the Army after I graduate college.
If you’re already graduating college try your best to get a commission. You’ll still be leading most of the time and the pay alone should be worth it. If you don’t make it you can always go enlisted but plan A should be officer.

If its not too late, I wouldn't dude. I enlisted in the Army with my Bachelors and it was a mistake. Officer will grant you much more money, respect, and better prospects for a job after you get out.

The problem with the military. If a officer doesn't like he or her could ruin your career. That what happen to me 8 years as a E-4. And I got out. USAF. Everyone that knew me told me. All the time why I wasn't promoted. It happens.
I don't know how it is in the Coast Guard, but in the Navy, they have an "up or out" policy for officers. If they don't keep moving up in rank, they're gone. Also, if they get passed over for promotion three times, they're gone.
OTOH, as an enlisted person, you can plateau at a particular grade and stay there; you don't have to move up if you don't want to. There was a guy, an HT, who remained a PO2, or E-5, because he didn't want the responsibility that came with being promoted to a higher grade.
It's too bad officers can't do that. An officer might be good as a division officer, but he might not be a good department head. I think that the Navy wastes officer talent this way.
Good point - the CG on the Officer side has a similar thing where if you get passed over for promotions twice in a row you basically are asked to leave the service. Yeah it would be an interesting incentive moving forward to help with retaining and even recruiting across all services to give its’ members more options.
@@militaryjourneymen it may be twice now in the Navy too. When I was in almost 40 years ago now, officers could be passed over three times before having to leave; I don't know if that still applies now.

Coast Guard officer here: when an officer is up for promotion, he/she is evaluated by a promotion board. The promotion board is at specific intervals based on rank and other factors. If you don’t make promotion after being evaluated by the board, (in most cases) you will be separated from the service.
@@Phantomwaxx That sounds bizarre to me! That forces you to rank up (or essentially be fired). Wouldn't this essentially guarantee officers who aren't suited for higher ranks being under immense pressure to rank up anyway? And is separation honourable discharge?
@@Tiger74147 it is very competitive, yes. But even enlisted members must advance by specific timeframes or they will be discharged; it’s the terms we agree upon by serving. In most cases, separating from the CG will result in an honorable discharge. The member is not being fired, per se. Being “fired” is an entirely different conversation and is almost always the result of a serious transgression, regardless of rank.

James G Very very few officers even make it to an Admiral rank, but yes they make really good money. I’m not sure about Navy/Coast Guard, but for Air Force only 5% of Colonels make it to Brigadier General. (O6 to O7)
