  • Hi everyone, today I'm sharing with you an ordinary day sketching at a favorite cafe, the Prado Cafe on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. I sketched my coffee and vegan wrap, and captured the couple in front of me spontaneously. It took me an hour and half to enjoy the food and sketch on location. Please watch the video until the end for my full process composing this sketchbook page using pen and watercolors.
    🎨 Materials I used:
    Sailor's fude fountain pen
Noodler's Brown 41 Ink (to fill the fountain pen)
    Mungyo watercolors
Etchr Mix-Media A4 size Landscape Sketchbook
    Holbein Water Brush (large tip)
    Holbein water brush (medium tip)
🎨 I'm teaching online classes every week. Check them out the newest 2024 classes in my Ko-Fi Shop:

I've very recently started drawing favouring ink and wash style. Without knowing anything I've been watching videos so I can start on the right foot and not be discouraged by bad choice.
Your style of sketching is appealing and your speed is commendable. Your commentary throughout the video really makes a difference to understand your process.
Thank you for making this video and sharing.

It's good to know that even a seasoned artist like yourself still gets uncomfortable painting on location. I'm still too scared to go out on my own but watching your videos is very inspiring! Keep up the great content

It reminds me of a coffee shop in Portsmouth NH we were in a few weeks ago. Lots of bricks. I hope to go back soon.

Very nice! Have you ever had someone you are sketching come over to chat and look at your painting? I still don’t have the confidence to sit in a cafe and sketch 😅mind you, I am really new to this so hopefully my confidence will come as I hopefully improve. Thanks for sharing your work. It is really inspiring.

Most of the time people won't notice even when they are sitting so close by, but if they do, they are always happily surprised and very friendly. Thank you for your appreciation!

You are very brave Becky, out there all by yourself. I’m sure if someone did notice you painting them they would be very flattered. You are very talented and I have learned so much over the years. Happy sketching😊

Drawing people on the move is very challenging, great job! Becky, can you tell me more about the Sailor pen? How would you compare the fude nib to a regular nib? Thank you!

Thank you! I will film a video on Sailor's fude pen very soon. In general, the fude nib can create more variety of line thicknesses controlled by hand pressure and angle holding it.

Enjoyed your video! Would you explain how you keep your watercolor brush from filling up with murky paint? I end up with muddy colors after awhile. Thank you!

    • @BeckyCao

A good, functional water brush should not fill up with muddy paint after painting for a while. You should use authentic brands such as Holbein, Sakura, and Pentel. I’ve always been using Holbein brand water brushes and never had the problem.
