  • Helloooo fwiends :) I figured it was time to revisit the paraben issue and the research! What are parabens? Are they safe? Why you should care? This video presents an unbiased (as far as I can be anyway!) look at parabens. I will note that in my research, I place emphasis on credentialed, credible, science-based resources vs. sources like EWG. OPEN FOR MORE INFORMATION!

    I was concerned about parabens in cosmetics until I met my friend Cecile. She is a chemist who audits formulas for some top French cosmetic brands. She explained that parabens are generally safe and that actually the fear people have of parabens have led to companies using more unsafe preservatives instead of parabens. People are just not aware of these, because the focus is on parabens.

      yup, that's a very good point! plus, especially if you're using products near your eyes or on your lips, some sort of bacterial outbreak may be worse than preservative exposure! anyway, everything in moderation :) i am sure there are some better options out there even if it means shorter shelf life... but no need to break your back about it!

    So refreshing to hear from someone that actually read and understand primary scientific research - including methodology (in vitro vs in vivo), conclusions and shortfalls. I feel that brands seize on headlines and hype given that many consumers don’t actually do the research for themselves. Enjoying your channel and your perspectives on beauty.

    I really wanted to try cerave products but the parabens in it keeps me from doing it. I wish it was paraben free personally, because ceramides sounds amazing for the skin. Breast cancer runs in my family so even if it’s not proven that parabens cause cancer, I try to decrease my exposure as much as I can.

      Stevie Wanders with paraben free, theres chemicals put into paraben free products that not have been tested and investigated. so unless you are allergic i reccomend not going completely paraben free. or look into products with the safe preservatives.

    Thank you for the intelligent and informative video. I have been trying to avoid parabens skincare products if possible (just not to overload on them) but have found them impossible to avoid altogether as some of my favorite skincare products still have parabens. It is good to know that the media misinterpreted and overhyped the studies.

      you can use cosdna.com to look up products and ingredients. i prefer it to other sites. the ingredients that have a bad rating, you can do a little extra digging into and decide for yourself. For example, propylparaben gets a rating of 7 on the site, but in the quantities i am exposed to them at, i am comfortable.

    My cousin’s oncologist told her that, although there was currently no clinical evidence to support it, she might err on the side of caution and avoid parabens just in case. When she was fighting cancer, I found an article stating that parabens were a possible estrogen disrupter, but I can’t find that article now. (And the printed version burned up in my house.) I don’t know what to think. She had the BRCA gene. Her cancer metastasized to her brain and that’s what took her. I don’t know if there’s any causation or even correlation between her breast cancer and paraben use or ingestion, but I avoid them just in case. (I do not have the BRCA gene.)

      If you can't get it, don't worry about it! You can just use a moisturizer or something else w niacinamide in the morning instead. No big deal to skip I think. The big worker is still retin A. For sonicare I don't change my brush head very often. Lol. 1x every 8 months?? Hehe. Whenever it starts looking ratty. They are pricey but don't get the knock off brusheads. They are not as good

      You can
      A. Use the recommended cream to treat whatever you need it for, and be at peace knowing that there are no published articles with evidence of parabens being directly harmful to human health.
      or
      B. Use something without preservatives, and risk using something that may be contaminated, growing bacteria, fungus, and worsen your skin with an risk of infection.

      For most of my life I would follow what I hear on the news or from unreliable sources on the internet. I thought chemical sunscreens, aluminum in antiperspirants and parabens were dangerous. I’m considering becoming a dermatology nurse, and from that I had to stop listening to scare tactics and start looking at scientific research.
      I watch a lot of Dr. Dray’s videos on RUclips who covers a lot of topics that are of concern today, parabens included. You should check her out!
      Basically, I’m willing to use something that is deemed safe.

    What companies are going to pay scientists to run controlled experiments on their products for decades to measure the degree of harm caused by ingestion or absorption of synthetics?
    If 99% of us likely have parabens and other synthetics just sitting in our system, and the mass-usage of synthetics is directly linked to the industrialization of commerce with most products being sold on the market having some synthetic component, wouldn't it stand to say the exponential increase in auto-immune disease in recent decades would be linked to the usage of synthetics? Obviously the huge increase environmental toxicity has played a huge part, but it seems that if we combine its harmful effects with the effects of ingesting a variety of synthetics you'd begin to compromise your natural systems on a cellular level. Just cause the 'scientists' say that they couldn't point to parabens directly causing cancer, doesn't mean that it wouldn't play a part. They say that because there are very little studies done on it. And again, who is going to pay to study this? Multi-billion dollar corporations selling the products lined with potentially harmful synthetics? Likely not. The FDA who is totally cool with highly toxic and addictive high fructose corn syrup being pumped into children's bloodstream does not seem to care about health when there's money involved, neither does the government itself who subsidizes high fructose corn syrup.
    There's a lot of right-brain rigid skeptics who use the whole "correlation vs causation" argument to say there is no proof of something causing harm. It's like, of course not....mainstream science doesn't like to study things that private/government grant money won't pay for. Where there's money being forked, there's usually an agenda at work. If it's causing harm and your data shows it, but it doesn't go along with the agenda, your grant gets pulled. This is how modern day 'scientific' research actually works.

    I don't agree with you. Yes, it's a logical fallacy to say that correlation equals causation. But it's also a logical fallacy to say that not being able to conclude causation means there's no causation.
    Science doesn't function like a court of law, where you're innocent unless proven guilty. Just because parabens haven't been conclusively proven to be "guilty" doesn't mean we can assume they are innocent. The bottom line is we just don't know.
    Also, it's inaccurate to try to associate breast cancer incidence directly with the amount of paraben products on the market. Even if you assume that everyone stopped using parabens in the mid-2000s, their prior exposure to parabens could have contributed to their later diagnoses.

    • @LogicvsLuxury
      @LogicvsLuxury  7 лет назад +3

      1) i agree. i never stated that this clearly means there's no causal relationship. and like i say at the end of my video, everything in moderation. the amount of parabens present in most skincare products is so tiny and i just am not fussed about it especially since often times 'paraben free' products feature phenoxyethanol which is also no walk in the park with some conflicting reports. so pick your battles. i'm not planning on drinking the stuff that's for sure.
      2) i know that my indirect little scan of the stats is totally inconclusive. if researchers couldn't find a link looking at the data with their statistical superior models, i certainly won't :) but it's just more for demonstration purposes and also to show how often data can be interpreted (such as if you didn't know there was an increase in diagnostic technology during that period).
      3) i was going to address your other comment re: the 2015 study (since i saw your pre-edited comment in my email), but i think you must have gotten your answer there in my video already :)

    • @soxnation1000
      @soxnation1000 7 лет назад +3

      Joanna's Logic vs Luxury Thank you for taking to the time reply. Everything in moderation is a fair approach, and I agree with you that chemicals that may be substituted for parabens may not be any better.
      I disagree with what reddit's skincareaddiction sub says about parabens, which is that "all the hype over one study in 2004." At first I thought that was also what you were saying, but now I realize you're not.
      Parabens have been extensively studied. They have been detected in blood after just one application of paraben containing lotion. The estrogenic activity of parabens is well established. Parabens can also increase UV photodamage and cause cell death on the skin. This meta-study summarizes
      the existing research on parabens and the need for more research. The full text is available for free here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jat.1358/epdf
      There are many studies cited there, not just one from 2004, and this meta-study was from 2008, so there has been a decade more research after this. So skincareaddiction is not correct that "all the hype about parabens is from a study in 2004."

      soxnation1000 science funtions on a "can it be disproven or cant it be disproven". if it can be disproven, its science, and science will work towards trying to disprove parabens being safe, but like the big bang- it hasnt yet. so thats what we're rolling with. the big bang is considered fact, parabens are considered safe. if it cant be disproven. its psudoscience, big foot cant be disproven.
