I wish they didn’t try to make a “Oh plot twist he’s actually telling the story as an adult to his daughter” and then completely ruin everything by confusing the story, nothing he said actually happened and another “double plot twist! The daughter has a kid and Orion married his crush!” Like it was so confusing and I wasn’t able to relate to the characters anymore 🤦🏾‍♀️

They could have fixed this in one of two ways... 1. Have a scene at the start of the movie that establishes the fact that he's telling the story to his daughter, or 2. Wait to reveal that its just a story until the very end of the movie.
The premise of the story just kinda shifts halfway through so they could have this new meta storyline. They tried to have their cake and eat it too.

They also shouldn't have included the whole "Hypatia helping Orion" plotline. It just really muddles up the movie and makes it lose its focus. Like, wasn't this film supposed to be about Orion overcoming his fears? Why did the writers just completely forget that towards the end and have a sci-fi time traveling scene that felt like it was from a different movie entirely?

I fully agree with you. The minute they showed this was a fake story, that kind of ruined it for me. But I tried to give it a chance thinking that once the story ended Hypatia would still be scared of the dark. Only for Dark himself to show up a few minutes later, and have her realize the story her dad was telling really was true. But no, they decided to keep it fake, and add a disoriented story plots that didn’t make much sense. I think I would’ve actually liked this movie if Hypatia and later Tiko hadn’t interfered in the story, and adding themselves into it as well. That just didn’t sit well with me.

I think that adult Orion is saying “it’s not real” is because he doesn’t want his daughter to try to go on the same goose chase of facelift fears that he has been on.
And I also think that the reason why he’s still “afriad of the dark” is because he is still a bit unsettled by it but is not as scared of dark and the others anymore or, atleast not as much as before.

To me though: The story is almost fine, even when we see adult Orion telling his daughter a bed time story. Maybe that's a story he didn't made up at that same instance. Maybe earlier he tried and told other stories to his daughter but it didn't work out for her daughter to overcome her fear of the dark, so he thought "i think this, the most personal story of mine about how i became friends with the dark has to be told". So he told *the movie version story* to her daughter and simultaneously telling about his childhood life, his parents, his crush, his *other fears*, how everyone didn't understand his feelings about the fear of the dark, but eventually they'll help him, in their own way, and so so, to her. But wait, it's not a ONE DEAL story. He became friends with Dark that's ok but it took time to actually overcome his fear of the dark. I mean, Dark (as an entity) is his friend but overall he's still a little bit scared of the Dark (the natural phenomenon). Ofc, lots of problems will arise eventually, specially "fear of the unknown".
The walking down the street scene in the night with his daughter, it could've been a little more challenging if he could've just walk with his daughter to that park. Ofc his daughter will be scared but that same time he will tell the rest of he story about overcoming his real fear of the dark (the phenomenon). Eventually, it'll be a Twilight. His daughter can experience the meaning of both (Dark and Light) at that frickin same time and understand "it's ok to be scared of dark but sometimes dark can show you something that only be possible of the dark; Dusk and Twilight. They'll hug and shed a tear and go their home.
...and Orion's story will eventually pass on to his daughter and to his grand child. But ofc, not everyone will be impacted the same but eventually it'll. It'll take time to overcome the fear of the dark.
and at the final scene, Orion and his wife (childhood crush) gazing at the night sky with glittering stars and then cut to the planetarium scene, they'll touch their hands, slightly.
    Frickin THE END
PS- sorry for too long of a post and grammatical errors.
    Peace 🕊️ ✌️

This movie was SUCH a mess. It was going alright EVEN AFTER the first Hypatia scene believe it or not. But they just kept pushing this narrative further and further, and forced the future shenanigans down our throats like they're nagging you to remember that it's all not real. WHATS THE POINT OF THE STORY THEN? A story has to be immersive! but no, they kept poking you like they're trying to grab your attention to the fact that this is all not real. AND they always cut to older Orion in the most terrible moments! not only that, but the did NOTHING with Light's narrative when they were clearly building him up to come back later and do something! Also the night entities seemed like such, insufferable, horrible people. They just immediately backstabbed Dark. I'm so disappointed because I genuinely thought it was going great at first.

Ooooookay........ I'm gonna create a bit of a balance here and say that. I actually liked the movie and how it ended. Even though a little part of me wishes everything was real in that movie's universe, at the same time, I actually like the route they went with it just being a story the dad made up, because usually in movies/shows, the magical beings are real in the cartoon universe the characters live in. I like the more realistic approach they went. And yes I know, not everything has to be realistic especially in fiction, but I like it when some movies add a bit of realism here and there. And I didn't mind that the daughter added herself in the completely made up story her dad couldn't finish, sure it was weird, but she's was an imaginative and creative kid, I didn't expect it to her approach be totally normal I mean, the whole thing was made up from the beginning, with Dark and the other magical entities. Plus, her son and the whole time travel entry wasn't weird or rushed to me (Keywords: TO ME), just another imaginative, creative kid helping his stuck parent finish the story, it was cute in my opinion. Apparently people find the plot twists of it being made up story a dad is telling to his daughter and then the daughter having her own kid and it being revealed that Orion married his childhood crush confusing and unrelatable? But personally I wasn't confused by any of it and I find the reveal of Orion marrying his crush to be more predictable than confusing. Plus, I was still able to relate to the characters.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the movie and it's ending. I may be the only one, but 🤷🏿‍♀️

I usually like most movies I watch but this one, this one.. I really agree with you on the “its everywhere” i just can’t understand some parts and had to rewatch it sometimes. I thought it was gonna be about Orion’s school life and how every fear of his has a lil entity but dark is literally 50% of the entire movie. I don’t like any of the hypatia parts as well it’s out of reach yk? 5/10 since I like movies

This movie was so random. It went from the story of Orion and the dark, which turned into grown up Orion telling the story to her daughter, to the daughter which turns into a tech kid traveling to Orion and the daughter, to the daughter being a grown up and the tech kid is actually her son, which means Orion is an old grandpa- like what

THANK YOU! I loved the Dark and the Night Entities, and I was wondering why everyone said the movie was mid. And then Hypatia was introduced. Ohhhhh man, words can't describe how much I hate her character and how she's suddenly inserted into Orion's story. She adds nothing to the film, and she had no reason to influence the plot that much.

I just tried watching it myself and when they switch to adult Orion in the first act with zero warning right before a core moment in the movie I was like "... Why did they do that?" 😅 On top of that I felt like unlike Corpse Bride or Coraline I just found it hard to get into, maybe since I'm an adult and this is very much a middle schooler story. I tried watching for Jacob Tremblay but man.

    1. Whenever the daughter joined in, it made no sense at all because that was an old story of Orion when he was young. Yes I know there’s a Time Machine which is why the daughters there but it just ruined it that why she’s there.

While I definitely liked most aspects of the movie, and view it fondly, the "storyline" subplot definitely was the thing that irked me the most about the movie, and ruined a bit of the ending as well. It's like if Inside Out was just a story Riley told to her own daughter. Maybe it'd make more sense if they established it was a story in the beginning. Also, I wish they were more consistent and subtle with the messages; for example, at some point in the movie (and I don't remember what was the quote was but it's similar) Orion's daughter straight up says something like "Why are you simplifying the story? Kids can comprehend more mature subjects" or something like that. You didn't need that. I feel like they added those bits because they were stuck in plot, and simply needed a reason to help connect it together more smoothly. There's so much I like about this movie, but still much more that could've been better.

To be honest, I thought it was deeply implied that the story told by Adult Orion was an exaggeration of what actually happened to him; putting a neat spin on his own personal experiences for his daughter to understand.

I half agree with you, but I liked the movie anyways because I used to make up stories in my head to try to convince myself that my fears were okay, and I used to make characters like the guy does in the movie, so it was super relatable to me because when I realized that I was still scared well it wasn't okay. But in the movie they go past that point and when he says "I _am_ scared, but I will do it anyways" that's the best part of the movie and everything before that is worth it imo.

They showed the plot twist too early, before we could bond with the characters, and right before what was supposd to be a fun scene.
