- It’s widely and easily accepted that smartphones of today are powerful enough to be computers, but no one has ever actually turned the device in their pockets into one. Unbeknownst to most people (including us here at Manila Gear), Samsung has been cooking up a full-fledged, feature-packed desktop mode called Desktop Experience (DeX) for their flagship smartphones since the Galaxy S8. With extensive relability features on productivity that rival basic laptops and tablets, is the desktop mode the future of smartphones? Find out here!
Some notes about Samsung DeX:
1. DeX originally required a proprietary Samsung dock to work, but now works with any USB-C Dongle with an HDMI port.
2. Cheap dongles (like ours) will require power plugged in through the extra USB-C slot unlike the expensive, branded or official ones. DeX WILL NOT ACTIVATE ON CHEAP DONGLES IF NO POWER IS CONNECTED.
3. The more recent Samsung Flagships (S9 onwards) have DeX that is compatible with ultra-wide and higher resolution monitors.
4. Expect some heating from BOTH the phone and the dongle when using DeX.

I think mobile tech has been growing steadily over the years, but there are definitely some technologies that represented a real leap in paradigm - the iPod just about killed CD's; the iPhone ushered us into modern smartphones as we know them today; RUclips has caused some people to stop watching regular TV; and Netflix is even starting to edge out cable TV in people's homes.
With regard to mobile computing, smartphones are now a significant information portal in everybody's pockets, but their role has been practically unchanged since the days of the first iPhone - people use them for light computing here and there, but laptops and desktops are still paramount for any significant productivity, and not even tablets like the iPad have been able to make significant changes to that paradigm. What will the next paradigm shift be? It might be one that allows us to use our mobile phones to go beyond communications, mobile gaming and entertainment, and instagramming, and actually supplant regular computers as workhorses for our productive lives.
Will DeX be the catalyst of this shift? I'm not sure yet, but only time will tell.

Just saw your video. What resolution do you get on that big screen? I have note 10+ and samsung c34h890 monitor but 3440x1440 is greyed out :(

I see that you're using an ultrawide monitor. Did you have to change any settings when connecting Dex or did it automatically adapt to the screen ratio? I have a Note 8 btw.
I have the S10, I do use DEX with a USB C hub, really usefull for web and youtube, but full of flaws, just try to copy a web link from the web address, but I agree the potential is awesome, it just need a lot of development
How did you get DeX to work on your monitor? I'm having issues with my LG ultrawide

For the love of God stop using Chrome in DEX, Samsung Internet app is far more optimised for DEX, just give it a try.
Yes Instagram has this bug in DeX. You can snap it with Win key +left or right arrow on your keyboard and after that you can resize it. Check my latest video how to do it. Also in Reddit there is a big community with all sorts of things that will help you.
Ah yes, but it's also an illustration of what others can expect from a desktop experience outside Samsung ✌️
