  • In "Rom and the Red Moon", Sophie and Sin discuss - are you ready? - Rom and the Red Moon. What happened at Byrgenwerth? Why is Rom also in Pthumeru? Was the Old Yharnam Red Moon the same as the Workshop Red Moon? How do you stop a moon, anyway?

    Thank you guys for still making content about BB after all this time. To me there are 5 last mayor mysteries left in bloodborne:
    - whats up with Brador
    - whats up with the creepy orphanage
    - why is the lecture hall in the nightmare
    - moon presence motivations
    - amygdalas role

    The school of Byrgenwerth seems to value physical transformations, particularly of plant-like bugs.
    There's the Spiders, Rom, Garden of Eyes (with spider talisman), Brainsucker, & Florescent Flower.
    That's a lot of bugs, clearly showing the Byrgenwerth was transforming folks into bug forms in hopes of gaining enlightenment.
    The Healing Church seems to create beasts, the Choir creates Celestial Emissaries, & Mensis creates Winter Lanterns.
    Even still, scholars are often slugs & spiders. Perhaps the plant-like Amygdala are transformed scholars too? Yharnam City is surrounded by plants; perhaps they were first?

  • @neatigloo
    @neatigloo 2 года назад +8

    Also, when Rom was reborn as a Great One (sorta) but became vacuous, was that the still birth of her brain? Like Mensis meeting Mergo, but they became vacuous, unable to ascend? Human Rom had audience with Kos, she almost ascended but failed = vacuous. Which now brings me to another random thought... Master Willem he seems to have lost most of his mind once we find him.... unable speak and weak.... If he suffered the malady of Eldritch encounters, which great one would it have been? Ebrietas?

    • @Reliken
      @Reliken 10 месяцев назад

      The problem here is that unlike Rom, the Brain of Mensis was "a legitimate great one." So they did ascend (assuming the Brain of Mensis is what happened to all the Mensis scholars, Father than something they captured and were killed by).

    20:59 Ive always enterprited it as the chalice dugeons are another level of the stacked nightmares below Yarnham, and Rom and Queen Yarnham are both greater beings that exist on multiple planes of reality at once. You kill them in one plane, but you only damage part of them in one level of physical reality because they've tranceded time and physical bounds.
    It very well could be that the further down you travel in the chalice dungeons, the further back in time you go.

    • @SinclairLore
      @SinclairLore  Год назад

      Yeah, my take on it is lower = earlier.The player, Bloodletting Beast, Rom, Patches and some of the NPCs are treated slightly differently because they're from outside, going down like we are.

    • @MrCleanAteMyWife
      @MrCleanAteMyWife Год назад

      @@SinclairLore I just had a thought. Perhaps the chalice dungeons are the base of the dream stack or close to the lower level, or at least the lowest physical realm. Maybe the weight of the other realms on top of it almost compress it down, which is why time tends to condense and move improperly. It may very well fit into the whole stagnency theme of Oedon. Ive always though of beasthood and insight ascension as the lower and higher parts of the self, the subconscious and super ego, where yarnham is the ego and perhaps symbolic of the corruption, or stagnation rune. The layers above are symbolic of flowing and slowing water, hidden away by Rom's reflective lake, then you reach yarnham where things stagnate in perpetual night, and then when you go lower they start to writhe, like the sequence of Oedon and lake runes in the clock tower where you fight Maria. When you go lower, which you can't do in-game, you may be in a realm only comprehensible by great ones, perhaps the realm of Oedon, which may be the eldrich truth that the Pthumerians discovered. This same higher-lower superego-subconcious theme is present in Dark Souls with the light and dark souls, but with more of an alchemical/holy-trinity-chaotic-fourth/eastern philosophy vibe and interpretation as opposed to lovecraftian. Those seeking the power of bloodtinge would want to go to the bottom level, those seeking the power of arcane would want to go to the top level. This is further supported by Queen Yarnham, who is as far down as you can go, using extremely powerful blood magic, and Kin and arcane enemies using things like stars and meteors from the heavens. At the very bottom everything pools, stagnates, churns, and things are born from it, perhaps even the layers above. Just like the dark soul. At the very top everything is spread out, expanding, and travels long distances quickly like currents, and involves light, but in the pursuit of that knowledge and power terrible things are done, just like with the light soul. Ascension involves combining, embodying or existing in both, as opposed to moving towards one. I imagine it's like a tree, sort of like the archtrees, where its condensed and in the earth in a root system towards the bottom and climbs up and spreads out in leaves and branches towards the top. The chalice dungeons are the roots, Yarnham is the trunk and the nightmares are the branches. The very top layer is the heavens and the very bottom layer is the primal chaotic void where everything is fused. Maybe this is why the lake runes make your resistance bars longer and the formless Oedon rune allows you to condense more resources in a small space. Great ones unite both and most likely created the tree-like physical world we exist in as a result, which is a manifestation of the conciousness and ego created from joining the sub and super conscious, and is synonymous with the ancient creation archetype used in pretty much every souls game. This could explain both why the great ones are plant-like, and why there's the archtree-ash-lake hint in the hunter's dream. Maybe the moon and presence is kind of its own thing or the highest realm before the heavens, and when they create the hunters dream they create a little replica of the hunters workshop in the moon presence's conciousness, which brings the moon closer to yharnam and causes the blood moon. Rom's lake reflecting the moon could have served as a barrier. This may also be why you see "archtrees" in the distance, you're now outside of it as opposed to in it. Interestingly, there's also this idea of a tree and a moon in elden ring. I think Miyazaki has a central theme of archetypes that he bases every game off of, but takes an entirely different interpretation and approach to conveying them and leaves out different pieces of the puzzle in each one.

    Something about Rom always struck me as the point of the game where you have to go all in on being a hunter.
    What I mean by this is that most of the game leading up to Rom has you react to the violence and horror bearing down on you but Rom is different.
    You go to Rom. Rom doesn't start hostile and when fighting, she fights is very passive and franticly. It feels like you as a hunter have to walk into the Rom fighting wanting to kill her or at the very least the fight tells you that you're supposed to give into the instinct to kill her as your prey.
    I studied Aikido for a bit and you're always trying to de-escalate fights. You're trying to supposed to learn self control so that you are not to source of escalation of conflicts and with Rom I could feel that she just wanted to be left alone that I was the invader of her world. My first time through the game I was playing with a sense of curiosity and wonder. I kept wondering how I could undo all of the damage and with Rom I realized that I was wrong.
    The game puts you in Yharnam to destroy it all and with the death of Rom there is no more mistaking the truth.
    No matter what you were before, now, you are a hunter.

    That the Altar of Despair is something Rom's corpse sits on, rather than the corpse itself, is a detail that makes so much sense but that I never realized! I also think that, like you were pointing out, Rom's corpse could have been brought their either before the events of the game or in the time-skip between when we kill Rom and wake up. I think it is most likely that they did it in the time skip, just because it seems like Rom's ritual was done after the Red Moon in Old Yharnam in an attempt by Byrgenwerth to keep the Church from doing it again. The Choir could have brought her corpse to the Altar of Despair in a desperate attempt to bring her back to life and keep the Mensis Ritual from continuing.

I think this is a very clever way of showing how serious they are about giving you the lore that you tune in for but also keep in it light hearted And not over bearing. You know I think the difference between bergenwerth and the church was indeed approach. Bergenwerth was trying to reach the state neccessary by natural means. Just continue learning and growing as a human with the natural processes until they are ready to ascend. The church was all about using the blood to force the issue of evolution in an unnatural way so as to get to that higher, enlightened state in the quickest way possible. Problem with the first is it is so slow as to not be making any progress at all. The problem with the second is they seemed to assume the mutation would only be beneficial as even if the subject didn't make it all the way they would be lifted up and thus they would be able to add to the collective knowledge. But that isn't what happened and suddenly they had this big problem with everybody turning into supernatural monsters with no guidance on the process.

    I always thought that Rom was vacuous because she was still really young, relative to a higher being, I mean she’s been a kin of the cosmos for how long, like 10, 15, 20 years? So even with all of that time, it’s still no where near enough for her to adjust.
    One last thing, I don’t remember from where I know this, but I’m pretty sure Willem was pissed at Rom because she wasn’t communicating with him and shit, and my thoughts about that is that Rom is on such a higher plane of existence, even with how young she is, that she isn’t able to communicate with humans. It’s like you trying to talk to an ant.
    I don’t know if all of this is correct but thats what I always thought.
    Also I haven’t watched this podcast in like 3 months and omg this is amazing, thank you for granting us eyes.

      @juanausensi499 2 года назад +2

      I'm with you on this. Willem hoped transformed Rom will reveal to him all secrets of the cosmos, but Rom didn't. So he called her 'vacuous' either by misunderstanding of her motives or by spite. It's clear not everybody thinks Rom is stupid, because Micolash really wants to take the same path she went, and the second note about Rom says she reached true enlightment, but she actively did choose not to share that.

    Just found this channel and I love it. Great discussion, and your love for BB shows through very clearly.
    My personal impression playing the game was that Byrgenwerth was built next to the lake because Rom was an ancient being there to start with. Always though Rom was a genuine great one, but never considered she was made by Willem and Co to control reality.
    Really sad when you consider Brain of Mensis by comparison may just have been a product of Micolash's jealousy, or maybe just curiosity to emulate Rom. Instead BoM became a dead vegetable monster, incapable of response, though would have been an incredibly boss fight if a success (think cleric beast with a winter lantern head)
    Rom was tough but I always found her incredibly graceful, dignified and mothering, even if she was an awful inhuman abomination. Seeing ebrietas as a moth and her as a caterpillar almost made me think they are one in the same (where Rom might mature into a winged Ebrietas, as a caterpillar would pupate), and if so maybe Ebrietas was once human, transformed by the Choir and trapped in a damp dungeon basement. How else would they be able to contain her? Unless captured as an infant and nurtured in the basement of the cathedral?
    Personally I think Ebrietas is a bs boss fight, her health bar is insane. Very difficult to solo.

    Sophie has some valid criticisms about the Rom fight, but I saw it as part of bloodborne's different design of Bloodborne. A lot of the bosses are way harder if you give them space. I realised this when fighting Master Logarius, most of his attacks seem to miss if you're off to his side, and he spends a lot of the time backing off. I feel like it's shown the most in the Micolash Fight, if indirectly. Bloodborne doesn't cater to all fighting styles, and ranged attacks are a joke. You're a hunter, you're usually best being up in the enemy's face

    I have a theory that has no evidence (that I know of) other than the fact that Fromsoftware likes to reuse story beats. I think that it’s possible that when you go into the Chalice Dungeons and kill Rom, the Bloodletting Beast, the Queen of Yharnam, etc., that is actually how they died originally. Similar to the story of Artorias of the Abyss where you go back in time and kill Artorias, but it turns out that it had always been you who killed him. Something like this also happens in Bloodborne when you kill the Blood-starved beast, and then the Choir come in after you and take the chalice.

    Wait what? 20:06. I thought Kos was the one who explicitly cursed Yharnahm. Queen Yharnahm did too? Also, 19:00 "a man with several limitations has to be one of the most hurtful insults" oof.
    Also the more I stare at the QY model the more grotesque I realize it is, from the shackled hands to the bloody abdomen. Kudos to the creator.
