I just wrote a brief piece about Bloodborne and Kegare and cited you guys (and Redgrave)! My favorite lore people getting together makes my heart full.
1:13:47 lmao where did you get stock footage of colored smoke being blown over Broccoli?? It fits so well with the talk about the enlarged head patients and Milkweed rune
Awesome stuff! Mushishi is amazing, and now I understand why they're called mushi - I knew it meant bug(s) but I didn't pick up on the connection between 'bugs' and disease until yall talked about it here. That in mind, I think it's worth noting that the mushi are connected not only to disease but also to 'divinity'/'enlightenment'/light, and that this is not coincidence but an ontological connection in which the divine, otherworldly etc. is fundamnetally inimical to humans, in a way that sort of parallels how you talked about beasthood, great ones, impurity, vermin and phantasms.
I should have known you ladies would not miss the opportunity to get a rising presence in the lore community onto the podcast! Another excellent episode; I love the way From uses these principles as a recurring theme (in Kuon, too, though that one deals explicitly with a Japanese setting so its presence is literal rather than referential).
hehe I actually wanted to invite Last Protagonist on like months and months ago, but because we had a crapload of podcasts to edit before our new host arrived, I didn't have time to record new things XD
I just wanna say this - the way y'all pronounce kegare sounds a lot like cagar as said by an English speaker. And cagar is a verb, meaning, literally, to shit. So, yeah... it is impurity at its finest. Laughed every time you said it. "Valley of cagar", in particular, really takes the cake 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Also, been out of the Snack Covenant loop for a bit and came back to find Sophie! Hi, Sophie! Nice to have you here!😗 Also also, Last Protagonist! *Whoop-whoop*
This episode is making me think a lot about Elden Ring. Golden Order basically enforces their sense of 'purity' and 'order' by artificially drawing a line between kegare and un-kegare things.
Regarding the feeling of confusion where the Beggar’s fully intact sanity is concerned, I would argue that his retention of reason within Beasthood can be looked at in comparison against the way Beasthood manifests in others. How do the people become Beasts? Well, they partake of the blood which devolves them into Beasts, but they continue to lie to themselves about their own Beastliness. How do the clergy become Beasts? Well, they partake of the blood as well, but they understand the potential within it and struggle against it until it is too much for them to withstand, and it erupts out of them violently. So then what would result in the Beggar’s situation? Simple. He accepts the beastliness of Man and accepts what the blood gives him. He BECOMES the Beast willfully instead being forced into it or lying to himself about it. He makes it his strength. None of the Clergy wanted to accept the Beasthood, and none of the Townsfolk wanted to admit their Beasthood. Only the Beggar accepted what was happening. He didn’t fight it, he Embraced it. Beast’s Embrace is the testament of your understanding and Embracing of the Beast within Man. You and the Beggar saw and understood that all Men have always been beasts, and that by denying or suppressing it, you give up all control over it. I’m honestly a bit surprised none of the content creators I watch have taken this approach to that situation.
I MAY NEED TO INTERFERE. 24:00 To save Rhea you do not necessarily need to kill Petrus. That's only one way have to do it. Other is buy all that she have.
@@sophiepilbeam7647 yes, if you buy everything and, for whatever reason, Petrus doesn't kill her: she gets kidnapped by Seath and goes hollow in the Archives.
If we inherit the "sins" of the blood upon consumption, and blood is the path to godhood, does that mean taking accountability for what may not be your earned burden is what propels us along the path of evolution? I have a strong desire to clean up my room all of a sudden...
I love the potential connection to what is Mushishi’s main McGuffin, Mushishi’s reframing of Japanese mentality through a new mythos really helped me get a better grasp on what Shintoism and the Japanese aesthetic was after my previous inundation in regulated representation of tradition.
Kegare as much as I'm familiar with Japanese culture, having lived here ten years now, is moreover a Buddhist concept... Haven't played sekiro but, souls and bloodborne, I thought, delt with disease in the more modern historical sense, as described by focault for example, a philosopher that is well known here.
When listening to you guys talk about kegare, I always wonder why won't Sin mention that us slavs have a very similar term, I think Russians call it скверна, correct me if I'm wrong? Anyway in my culture (Baltic Slav) this means like dirt that can be either actual or metaphorical and it's shameful to have it and you must cleanse it and it also has like cultural and religious affiliations primarily with the Orthodox Christian beliefs and somewhat pre-Christian paganism world views? Very interesting to think about!

I swear to god, if this is just Hitman Reborn clickbait.....
Hearing Last Protagonist talk about Reborn lore and translations would definitely be something.
lmao
Last Protagonist?? Woooo, baby I'm excited.
Absolutely riveting just hearing three scholars in their natural element talking about societal constructs
I just wrote a brief piece about Bloodborne and Kegare and cited you guys (and Redgrave)! My favorite lore people getting together makes my heart full.
Where can I read it? I'd like to.
Coming back after Elden Ring, the concept of Kegare is clearly part of scarlet rot's inspiration
The bastards curse video is just your brand of the cursed. Its incredible

I would pay actual dollars to get the Australian edition of bloodborne. "OI CANT" 🤣
The total silence after she said that made me laugh until I fuckin cried
Oh wow. I didn't expect LP to be here. I love him. Thanks snack lore crew!
Maybe the kegare is the friends we made along the way.

Oooooh this is a dirty episode ;).
This makes me want to watch Princess Mononoke again. It's rife with that stuff.
My this is my personal olympus of BB Lore people, praise the lore!!

Excellent guest and a brilliant discussion! Keep LP in the fold!
Great video as always!
Btw, can we get a "Sophie explains" supercut?
2:02 I didn't know I needed an Australian-set bloodborne game until this moment haha
I need the Jamaican version in rastafari translation.. nooo wah-gwahn*yharnamite dies*
This was a great talk!
One of the most profound videos on Bloodborn I've seen since Sophie's video on Odeon. Thank You.
The opening is so strong that I can't help but leave a pre-emptive like.
lol
Love you girls ty for another fantastic premiere!!! ❤❤❤ I hope to see LP on more stuff later ^^

Harikikigaki is the germ/mushi book for anyone interested
Did Sophie ever remember the name of that Japanese bug/disease encyclopedia thing cause it sounds cool.

Hey Sophie does this guy realise that your trying to pass the kegare curse to him? Does he realise how many questions hes gonna get
Whatever happens, he may think it all a mere bad dream.

Since the soulsborne games are eastern root games with western overlay. What would a western root game with eastern overlay be?

Ghost of Tsushima.
