  • We have our first stand-alone DC movie in the form of a character study origin for the clown prince of crime! Joker takes us on the slow descent of madness of an ordinary man subjected to the ugliness of society. Easily one of the most hyped movies of the fall, does it deliver the goods or is it a bad joke?

    I have a mental illness, and the way they portray mental illness in this movie is amazing. It's great how they never make fun of it. Some scenes in the movie made the audience laugh, but I sat there and felt sad and sorry. Society, family and friends always throw people with serious mental illness away, and this is a portrayal of what truly can happen.

      I feel that. I have multiple mental illnesses (bipolar II, MDD, GAD) and it’s like being trapped in a permanent prison where no matter how long you live with it, you still don’t quite understand it because it’s so unpredictable. I was diagnosed as a teenager over 10 years ago and there’s still some parts I just don’t get. Its not like we want to be this way. Our brains just aren’t wired completely right but we don’t deserve to be treated as pariahs because of it. But we are, and most of the time it’s because of the few bad apples that do cause harm.

    • @caspeansea9179
      @caspeansea9179 3 года назад

      @Tsearing Sports What a clown. Ledger is overrated af. The oscar was given to him. His performance was average at best for good actors. It was just a bland and simple take on one dimensional version of the Joker character. So many actors could pull out that kind of performance. Stop kidding yourself. He was nowhere near Joaquin's level in acting. Stop overhyping an average performance just because of his death. Best Actor award for Golden Lion, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAGA, BAFTA and Oscar. Around 80 awards worldwide. Two Guiness world records. Didn't depend on Batman to stay relevant in the movie. They just seemed to ignore it. Ledger's fanatics could be so cringy sometimes. Joaquin's Joker shits all over Heath's Joker all day.

    • @Draven7970
      @Draven7970 3 года назад +1

      @@caspeansea9179 Lol, "What a clown". Pun intended? The thing about Ledger's performance is that he really does seem unhinged and twitchy, like you know that you should not be near him cuz he could off you at any moment. He's someone who you definitely don't want to mess with, he's also very intelligent and calculating, and he's actually funny in a dark way. All these things is what makes Ledger's Joker amazing and it's what got him awarded posthumously. I think Pheonix did awesome, but for me and a lot of other people he's just a bit below Ledger because he doesn't quite show all these qualities, he just seems like a very fucked up person who just so happened to turn into the joker.

Besides his look he is way more accurate as the joker than Phoenix and Ledger. Leto is over hated by people who saw him and decided before seeing the movie they hate him. For me it was a 7.5/10, good but not great. It was kind of a standard "loner descending into madness" film to me? It was nice to see a really dark comic book moviec and Joaquin was amazing in it but the story wasn't next level, it didn't have like crazy good payoff. I would love to see a sequel starring Joaquin where he actually becomes a crime lord.

    Very funny intro (as usual), and an excellent review (also as usual!).
    I'm pretty much in agreement with you on this one; yes, it's very good, but those who hyped it to the skies should probably watch Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, which this film does not match (though that's also a very high bar to clear!). I will give this film credit, though, for melding the two movies' ideas and themes quite well, and presenting things in a way that works as both a modern movie and a throwback-style film. It also did just what you said: giving us a back-story that doesn't just ruin the mystique of a well-loved character or universe, like these things usually do.
    There were some bits in the movie that felt a little unnecessary, such as the imaginary neighbor (in fact, the second hour of the movie in general didn't live up to the first); even the inclusion of the Waynes seemed a bit shoehorned-in, especially when it comes to the age of the Joker relative to that of Bruce. The father character, though, helped reveal the fact that those who called the movie alt-right propaganda or some-such probably hadn't watched the damn thing, given that he's a fairly cartoonish portrayal of a rich villain.
    Leading from that (as well as from all the positive hype surrounding the movie), all the apocalyptic, angry denunciations surrounding this also puzzled me: given the semi-sympathetic (or even outright sympathetic) treatment accorded to murderous characters in past movies, why did some people consider this one to be over the line? Yes, Taxi Driver caused some controversy when it came out, but I don't know that it was to this extent. For that matter, Monster, which gives a pretty sympathetic portrayal of a serial killer, was generally praised, with only a few dissenters noting that a male serial killer would never get a film like Wuornos got there. (For the record, I did like that movie, but also understand the detractors.) The furor also conflicts a little bit with all the fuss over Nolan's third Batman movie, which some called right-wing propaganda - many of these same people are saying the same thing about this movie, even though those who get sympathetic treatment and those who don't are almost completely reversed! For that matter, it also counters the complaints made by (again, largely the same) people who disliked the lack of a back-story or explanation of why the pirates in Captain Phillips did what they did.
    Obviously hyping fans and over-sensitive critics should be the least important aspect of a movie, but given how much those two groups overshadowed the actual damn film, one can't really avoid discussing them.

    Nice review, Cody! I definitely agree - this could easily be it's own standalone movie without any of the Batman, Joker, or Gotham stuff. It certainly doesn't feel like your usual comic book movie and I think that's something that works to this movie's advantage. It's a conflicting slow burn, but man does Phoenix elevate it all with his performance.

All 3 times I saw this movie so far tomorrow will be my 4th with my brother since he hasn’t seen it yet, I keep thinking I totally agree with you the controversy and the whole best of the year hype was totally unwarranted. Joaquin Phoenix however, earning best actor at the oscars was totally warranted as I feel his in Joker was the best performance I saw all year last year personally.

    Great review as always Cody. I saw this movie yesterday over here in 'not so great Britain' and it's really stayed with me. Without the Gotham/Wayne family references you could almost put this into the Unbreakable universe.
    When they are acted and directed well, dark slow burner movies are my favourites. But like Split, without the lead performance this movie could have been a disaster. Fortunately though, Phoenix nailed it - and then some! His performance at least deserves a nomination.
    It was the ending that really stuck with me. After thinking about it (most of the night), Ive come to the conclusion that this movie owes a lot more to American Psycho than people realise. I'm probably being over-analytical though because when alls said and done, I just fucking love this movie!!!

    There are so many little pieces that can be linked to joker lore. It is pretty depressing but it's made in a way that you can't keep your eyes off it. Beautifully made dark, gritty and Phoenix is not just good but great. It probably won't win any Oscars because its a comic book movie but nominations would show how good it is. You nailed this review mate. Thanks again.

    It's hard for me to put into words how good I found Joker (2019) made by the director Todd Phillips. This movie is great and so far one of my favorite movies from this year and in my opinion the best movie of 2019.
    The cinematography of the film was gorgeous, the soundtrack was mostly perfect, the acting was good too but probably the main reason why I love this movie so much is Joaquin Phoenix. What a fantastic actor!
    I love the Dark Knight trilogy from Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger's Joker. Ledger gave us a realistic Joker for the first time and Phoenix continued his legacy with respect. Phoenix gave us the same in his own way with a deeper background. In addition with an excellent Joker performance e.g. the Dancing and his Joker laugh. Just fantastic!
    The Joker's Mystery is still contained in this movie and although it's an Origin Story, I still have the feeling that the Joker has remained a complete Mystery and will probably always remain.
    The movie gets a 9/10 from me. The best DC movie since The Dark Knight (2008)

    I loved your review. This is one of my favorites of the year, though I completely agree with you on how critics and fans were overhyping this film like it's the next big masterpiece or how it's one of the most violent movies ever made. The DC Comics movie Watchmen was released in theaters 10 years ago, and that is ten times as morbid as this.

    I don't know Cody, but my standard of viewing the joker is Mark Hamill in Batman: The animated series.
    It could be because it was the 1st time I viewed batman & Joker was a crazy psychopath hellbent on playing games with batman.
    This movie reminded me of Taxi driver (1976) & The King of comedy (1982).

    All I could think when watching this movie is how great Phoenix could be in a Scorsese movie. He’s perfect for that kind of role. As for this being overhyped, that applies much more to Black Panther. Interesting thing about Joker is that it is completely grounded in real life. It’s a comic book movie that could actually happen in America and that really makes it much more disturbing than Black Panther or even Logan, which I agree was the most original take on this genre before Joker.

    I loved it and I’m not gonna lie, I overhyped the movie posting all the trailers up to this point of seeing it. His portrayal was great n he’s now in my top 2 of jokers. I felt for him especially in Arkham state hospital. I can smell a sequel coming tho. Great review as always,Cody !

      GurlyGamez Unfortunately there’s not gonna be a sequel, this is a stand alone movie. Plus Joaquin Phoenix is not into doing sequels from what I hear, so most likely not happening. Damn shame!!

    awesome review as always. I saw it twice already and loved it. I am not that much into the sympathy factor. I think Joker is NOT someone you want to feel sorry for but anyway Cody, a question for you: do you feel this Joker could become the master villain he is in the Comics? I have my doubts. The last scene makes you think he could. What do you think?
