They make sockets that have a plastic like coating on the outside of them for wheels. I think there is a brand called Titan sold on amazon that makes them. Could also use a thinner wall “non-impact” socket and just be reasonable with it
They sell the plastic sleeved socket at harbor freight too, look in the back for the clearance area for a deal or even better autozone on West Henrietta sells them (plastic coated sockets) individually- 2nd isle from the oil filters- end of the isle. Less than $20.
I have seen a few people turn down an impact socket on a lathe to make it thin-wall, but as the comments say here they do make a wheel-specific socket as well which is supposed to be non marring
You did the right thing with the wheels - store them clean. It's also worth putting a ceramic/liquid crystal coating on them (I use Gtechniq C2V3 as it's comparatively cheap and it lasts around 9 months), it means the brake dust and contamination etc simply rinses/washes off. As for scuffing from the air gun (yeah it's a bummer - especially on new rims), I switched to wheel nuts with an internal drive which means you'd use a large torx style bit to do-up/undo your wheel nuts. So there's no way you can scuff your nice wheels. Just put some copper anti-seize on the end of the wheel studs and they don't suffer any corrosion (even if you were crazy enough to drive your lovely MX5/Miata in the winter months!). Really looking forward to the series on your turbo build (being a turbo convert myself!).
Good to see some Wegmans shopping, garbage plate eating locals. Keep up the good work 👏 For the lug nut scratching, painters tape and or thinner walled socket. They usually only need 90foot pounds to tighten then. After I break them loose I use the thinner walled socket to zipped them off and on with my impact nut driver (don’t really need impact sockets). Please note that iron x might eat up your asphalt drive way I learned that the hard way of course especially the bug and tar remover. I take my car to a coin operated car wash to use iron x and or tar remover (they are usually concert pads). I heavily wax the rims for easier to cleaning. For the screw plug it I even plugged motorcycle tires 🤷. They hold if you are comfortable.
your garage looks great!.. you know, we work with what we have.. not everybody can have a garage like Quinn or the others.. and in this case the size of the miata again is a gift of fortune!.. imagine working on any other normal size car!.. .. i find it saves alot of floor space to hang tools on a wall instead of in a cabinett.. there are a lot of cool small-workshop-ideas online if you want to improve working area =)
Thanks Andreas! It is very helpful to have such a small car when working on it. Next move will be to a home with a 2 car garage minimum, but this is what I have for now and it still beats just a driveway.
Could you add a bit of detail about the turbo manifold, etc.? Looking to do a non-vvti JDM 1.8 myself. I plan to use a Bosch 60mm dbw throttle body and pedal.
Interior restoration should be interesting since I also will be freshening up my NA8 interior. Think about renting a suitable shop space....share the cost with a friend ?
I never thought I be so excited to buy... carpet. Few other things in store also. Would love a shop space but first move it buy a home with at least a two car garage. I will make this space work, but hopefully this will be the first and last season in this garage.
Ive been working on cars for the majority of my life, 25 years and counting professionally. On wheels i dont want to scuff with an impact i have a simple, fool proof, time tested method. Step one : do them by hand. End of procedure.
Wasn’t that big of a deal, you just have to be a bit more careful with tuning, but any decent tuner could handle it. .040” isn’t that much in this case.
Konig Hypergram 15x7.5, Yokohama Advan a052 205/50. With a 5mm spacer I couldn't ask for better fitment or look. Tires are just large enough to have a bit of the retro vib.
@@NappMotorsports I thought they looked familiar. That's what I want to buy for mine. Would that size fit 225s without too much stretch or should I go to 8.5in?

Thanks Angel! These comments mean a lot and motivate us to keep grinding. :)

Nice! Thanks for the tip @ProMods! Looks like I’ll pickup a set.
I was thinking if there is room just wrap the socket in electric tape lol

@@joelavallee3074 hmm plastic coated you say, I do a little powder coating, I could throw a few layers on the impact socket
TURBOOOOOOOOOO
This is the way.

Great tips, thanks! I have some ceramic coating I might add that on the first layer. Good stuff.
Yeahhhhhhh Tuuuurrrrbbbbooooooo Jeeze, you aren't kidding about it being tight in there. Makes me thankful I have room to work.
Yeah. I’ve put a lot into the basement to free up space. Still tight but should be doable.

Great spot on the Wegmans shopper, garbage plate eating local. Sierra and I were just trying to figure out what tipped you off. What gave it away?
I usually just use painters tape around my socket to prevent scuffing up the finish around my lug holes
This is brilliant. Will do this if I dont have a set of wheel sockets next time. Thank you!
Get some Impact Socket Set with Protective Sleeves. Sweet turbo!
Will do, I've got a set in my amazon cart. Thanks! Cant wait for the install!
whoosh whoosh! :D
Music to my ears! :)

Thanks Joe! Should be a good time!
Wrap your socket in duct tape or masking tape to help prevent scuffing
Thanks!
Still hyped...
Thanks, hope to deliver this season!
I’m pretty sure they make some thin wall impact sockets for wheel lugs.
Thanks, yeah they are in my amazon cart now. :)

No problem! I will overview the kit at some point, etc. Happy to review all the juicy details.
Nice I’m starting my Miata build 2021 series as well.
Nice, what are your plans?

What wheels are those? Also what sized tires are you running?
