- "Eve Monsees, I wouldn't be playing guitar, I wouldn't be playing music, if it weren't for her," Gary Clark Jr said when accepting his 2014 Grammy award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. "She took me to my first gig, and it all started from there." We reunited the two childhood friends in the suburban Texas garage where they fell in love with the blues together.

I love the fact he mentioned her when he got his Grammy, very touching. He's still real and didn't forget his true friends.
Those young cats were so close. Lovely in its way. Music that brings people together. I always thought they would get married? I hope they are still in touch? Cool....
Watch the untold story of how Gary Clark Jr. learned to play guitar: with a little help from his childhood friend Eve Monsees.
Cool : )
Now Gary is part of Music History
Rolling Stone righteous!! RS #THANKYOU !!!
+rozy walls Who?
Rolling Stone With a *little help from his friend* 😂
Living in Texas hearing about a black guy learning guitar from a white girl doesn't surprise me. Typical Austin stuff right there for you. Great city full of musicians of all races playing all kinds of music.
+Jay Oh, god. Please no to all that you are.
negro town? what is this the fucking 40s?
@@thepuppethead1188 well, what they really called it is truly not just politically incorrect, but just wrong...
to bad all of Texas (America for that matter) can't be like Austin!
I'm one of them. I learned by ear
A black boy is school in the blues by a white girl!?!
This is what makes America great,
Spread the love, end the hate
charles brown actually, "A musician is schooled in the blues by another musician" is the proper term. music has no gender and it has no race.
+TreySingz Oh, shut up with that PC bullshit.
+charles brown How dare you try and say anything positive on RUclips
That's how it happened for me. Except it was my German friend Ben Kruse.
First the bass then guitar.
There's a period in history where; unless you live in certain areas in the country, black youth DO not pick up guitars. We lost interest because of the culture traps we fall into. Luckily I grew up playing piano.
Eventually ended up in a band with a bunch of Zeppelin /Clutch heads.
+Andrew Schaeffer +treysingz look up....look back, because you completely missed the point of the statement....
usually u hear great artists give credit to a famous musician that inspired them or mentored them, but here, clark credits someone who isn't famous, who isn't a household name, a neighbor/classmate. great story. thanx 4 sharing. wish it had been longer.
total honesty ..a rare commodity..he should run for office
She's a huge talent herself.
That is a wonderful story of friendship, the love of music, and following your passion. Texas originals.
This story should be filmed for sure 🙌🏼
It's great to know how humble Gary is
I met him in Auckland on Tuesday night after his show and I can honestly say he is the most humble dude I ever met. It was the most perfect night of my life.
*****
that's awesome man, I plan on going to his concert where he's playing with the Foo Fighters later this year! I've only heard nice things about him, and I believe every word about how humble he is. He remembers his roots.
Blake B I couldn't be more jealous of you.
+Blake B I guess that humbleness is the first and only advantage...... yeah!!
+Blake B that's 1 of the things that makes him so cool.
eve and gary should get back together and make a record
R Kiki they should make a baby
@@StoicContrarian hes married lol
@@carsonpog480 they should do it for the sake of the future of music!
This is an amazing example of true friendship and support. Her parents were and are wonderful for recognizing the connection between the two of them and allowing it to flourish.
I got chills when Gary described getting the letter from Eric Clapton and then the first time he played at the Crossroads Festival... excellent documentary!
This made me cry! These two have a deep connection and it's obvious he truly values her influence. I miss having the musical connection with someone like these two have.
I need to find my Eve!
That is every musicians dream! I feel u bro
I am a Garry. I need to find my Gary and Eve. I’d love two more friends. I don’t have many but I just started making guitars.
I might start a guitar company called Gary and Eve.
Even though I’m a double R. I’ll give him that.
Gary just played at the Enmore in my town.
@@teerevevourdeminingo4274 You could change your name to Gary. :^)
Very few eves out there, mostly Karen's
Smart man to keep his friends close, and keep it real.
Friendship is one of life's biggest blessings.
blues needs to make a comeback into pop culture!
Evan Tisby - The Blues doesn't 'need' to do anything. It's perfect where and how it is. People need to look to find it. If it's everywhere then it's not 'The Blues.'!!
If it does make a come back, it won't be in this generation. Only musicians in my opinion, who took blues to another level were The rolling stones, The Beatles and Hendrix. Others kept repeating it.
David Harrison The White Stripes didn't do anything at all to the music???
+David Harrison Are you fucking kidding me. Buddy Guy, Albert King, BB, Eric Clapton, John Mayer and the greatest SRV!!!
Don't forget Bonamassa
It always starts with the blues. That's what lures you into the music, especially guitar. It's not in any beginner guitar book you'll ever read. But after learning your first chords, learn your pentatonic blues scales/major scales, then go relive the blues of history. It will surely make you a better player, trust me.
It's literally in every beginner's guitar book.
AMEN.
Absolutely!
@@estebanb7166 in some yes, BUT a lot of bands referenced using 12 bar blues in those books are not actually blues musicians! It’s a lot of rock, which misses a lot in my opinion
Does anybody know if GCJr ever listened to Alice Cooper?
Beautiful friendship! The world needs more people like Gary & Eve in it!
this was extremely rad to see. nothing like being kids just playing guitar in the garage!
I sold cars with Gary's dad and remember him sit-in on the curb (guitar in hand) waiting to get in and play. He's come a LONNNNG WAY
I can't understand why blues isn't more popular these days. I am so lucky that I was introduced to it
It is just not mainstream. Tons and tons of blues artists. More than ever I believe.
Jonas Wellinghton Wow you’re an extra kind of stupid
Exho He really isn’t mate search for Satanic Hollywood or something of the like. I don’t want to start a fight/debate.
I am 18 and i love to play and listen to blues. But many of my friends haven’t even heard of SRV, B.B King etc.
Because if it was more popular, it degrade the value of how amazing it truly is.
because times are a bit stupid - so to say - its a bit sad - shit sells better than great music.......
Who are the 46 people who dislike this? Seriously? Eve and Gary are amazing and authentic.
Studio2grl that’s life man. Or lady. Sorry
I’m just glad I scrolled down over 200 comments + and I didn’t see one comment about race. Other than me making 1 now.
Im Australian, although Gary just played at the Enmore in my town I have only seen him at the blues and roots festival in northern nsw.
Trump supporters!
As we say in Texas "some people will complain about free barbecue".
Best 10:35 I've spent on RUclips in a long time.
Great story of real people, friendship and a mutual love of music.
Everyone starts off with a crate.
coffeewaldo I had a line 6 lol
and a squier
I started with an old rusty amp where the logo was rusted off. I still have it. Then a marshal, then a Peavy halfstack. Oddly enough my only crate amp my uncle pulled out of the garbage. Still have it. Sounds like doodoo. If I had the urge to plug in I would have to use it tho. Sold marshal for drug money. The rust bucket has tone and volume no distortion. The Peavy is way to loud. Sooooo......goddamn crate.
@@TrinidadPuppets Bought a toasted squire changed everything on it
keeped the body and neck added a push/pull volume which gives me two extra
pickup up positions so bridge and neck together give a telecaster sound such a great
guitar now , much prefer it over my G&L and PRS just feels more lived in and comfortable
and has a great neck..
I did
This dude is awesome on so many levels.... great musician aside, he tells it like it is, and is so level headed and gives respect where it’s due! I love it!
Wow! That's amazing. I've been a fan of Eve Monsees for a long time, and I think Gary Clark is a fabulous guitar player too.. never knew this, .. amazing story!
You have been a fan if hers for a long time...... and never heard of her friendship with Gary Clark?
Albert King is smiling down on Mr. Clark for sure. And Kudos to this fine young Lady Eve too!
..........and i play Jazz Guitar too.........without a nice woman......What kind of future??
they should totally do something good together! how wonderful a story :)
Yes I agree, she needs more exposure and that would help.
Rahul Rajkhowa Yes It Will be amazing!! They are a incredible couple!!!!
"Being in this garage kind of changed what I wanted to do with my life"... I saw you in Park City, UT last year... I was 32 at the time and you sir, changed what I wanted to do with my life. I was a metal head before seeing you live... I have been studying and learning the blues ever since. Thank you Gary! Ride Gary, Ride!
I can't believe Crossroads was his first big show. He had such poise that I thought he was a big player that I just hadn't heard of yet.
You can tell Gary Clark Jr. is quite a humble musician, very grateful of his blessings and success. Eve is quite a talented musician as well. Best to their musical travels always.
Excellent piece, RS; have dug Gary from nearly a decade in Austin and, now, I know about Eve. Beautiful story.
Music does bring people together in the most amazing ways.
This story would make a great movie.
I've never thought that Gary had learned with a girl!!!!
It was really amazing!
What fantastic teacher!!!
Eve needs to be up there also, she needs to be famous also.
Love Gary for what he is: genuinely lived the life of a poor musician perfecting his craft. Played Epiphone cos that was all he could afford. If they tore up his deal tomorrow he'd just carry on because that's all he knows. That there is 21st century freedom folks. Ain't much of that left. The kind of inspirational shizzle you just don't get no more.
"If they tore up his deal tomorrow he'd just carry on because that's all he knows." That sounds more to me make 21st century Slavery! No matter how much you love your craft or work on it, you just have to get the dumb luck to get sponsorship, or you die sick and poor. I think you need to think this over again.
Amen
good parenting I'd say, amazing story :)
what kind of a sad soul thumbs down this? they got the blues fo sho!
I know Jason!
Epic! very inspirational. The guys were very lucky to have each other
This is beautiful. This is true friendship, this is a love of music, a love of the blues, this is love.
Would love to see those two in the same tour one day. That would be amazing.
Big love!
Ms. Eve is very good too . She taught him well .
Texans blues musicians are so humble and down to earth. They’re always sighting other Texas musicians and their influence on them. What and awesome community and family.
really great to learn bout Eve n Gary. looooooooooooooooove gary's work.. just WOW!
my fave song he's got is The Healing, live version from youtube. you ROCK Gary!
so glad i heard ya on the movie Chef..
I was at 2010 Crossroads and Gary Clarke jr was the best !!!! 2 nights before he played at Buddy Guy's Legends …..I thought I died and went to heaven, what a great experience it was for 3 days in Chicago.Jimmy Vaughan, Buddy, Hubert Sumlin, Doyle Bramhill, Eric, BB King, Sheryl Crowe , Sue and Derrick Trucks!
Going to a Crossroads Festival is high on my ''to do'' list.
vikki mytruk wow thats quite a lineup, I need to go to that one day!
AspiringGuitarist I went in 2013 - you HAVE to do it if you can. It's a surreal experience.
That's a beautiful story. Friendship and love can do anything.
Went to his concert once. Can confirm, guy's a genius.
Truly a class act ! This is one of the coolest stories I have ever seen !
I can't believe these two aren't married.
Incredible story. This is what makes music so rich. Not just the notes you hear but how they came about. The backstory. I love it.
Love it, white girl getting black boy into the blues, so damn cool.
Gregarious Antithesis should say “ friend introduces another friend to play blues” not male or female, and especially not white teaching black. That’s like the exact opposite of what he and other like minded people are trying to get away from....
Why???
Saw Gary live here in Portugal in Rock in Rio...... I enjoyed him more than the Rolling Stones, amazing player and amazing singer, a great inspiration.
true friendship
Great story, Gary. Respect your humbleness.
Gary Clark Jr. Is the Jimmy Hendrix of the 21st century!!! His prolific style is believable! I am never tire of his chord progressions, I am totally enamored by his style . I hope that he can close for
Woodstock 2019!!!🌿🌿🌿☀☀☀

Underrated
White girls got soul too! It's so cool to see how blues music is truly an American music. It has it's roots in the African American community, but over time has become a universal music that speaks to the sorrow and joy in the human experience.
white americans are so arrogant
“I thought I was gonna be the next Boys to Men or something.” Gary, I’m glad you decided to become to first Gary Clarke, Jr.
Very cool story! Love both of them...WHAT TALENT!
Playing on a Fender The "evil" Twin.... those never got the reputation they deserve...
Pisk Six
They do here in the U.K.?
Love Eve Monsees, a real deal guitar slinger!
Miss the old days... Antones, the jazz... Your garage, eves, mine. Glad you made it a lifelong thing. I drive by the 49 and wish I had never left. Eves dad was my favorite mentor. Miss gatti town. My heart never left the hood. I'm super happy for you brother. Much love. Chris Lewis
Not only boss talented...but an honorable guy!!!
That's such a cool story. I bought the Blak and Blu guitar just a few days ago and I'm hyped af to finally play it.
I'm interested in buyi that guitar! How is it?
+SoaringMuse Don't you mean it's a gold and yellow guitar? Am I missing something here?
SickMetalAddict dank
Roey Lubin It's really great man, I love the tone, the feel, the appearance... only problem is the fret board only goes to like 17 comfortably lol.
+SoaringMuse if I'm interested in buying either this one or epiphone Lucille or epiphone Sheraton ii which is the best?
What a tremendous video. I love Eve and Gary.
Christ, I had no idea he had such wholesome beginnings. I figured he picked up a guitar in college to get laid and then snowballed out from that.
He's adorable
first heard of Gary in the outro of episode 1of House of Lies. Immediately had to look up what song that was, and it was Bright Lights by GCJ. Got hooked ever since.
Two great musicians, two great people. Gary has pretty much left Eve behind now, but it’s great to know they are still friends. Or at least were; Gary’s pretty Woke now. Hope that hasn’t hurt their relationship, always sad when politics get between friends.
And the BlueBonnets are one of my favorite bands now, probably get a third of my CD playing time.
The very first time I ever heard him play & sing I knew he was gonna be big 1 day & now look here he is . He's badass !!!
I honestly feel sorry for people that haven't had at least one lifelong friend
Cool story, Kids make'n their way.............
What a lovely story. Good for them and thanks to their parents.
This is one of the great RUclips videos. Thanks Rolling Stone. Great story. I'm a new fan of Gary's and now Eve too!
AWESOME STORY, .. im in Nashville and have worked in the business as an audio engineer , i love Gary's style and his songs. i first heard of him about a month ago and think he's great. i will be at the Nashville, TN - Ryman Auditorium show APRIL 5TH. 2019.
i hope he stays the course and picks till his fingers bleed. im a fan of rock and blues, and now GARY CLARK, rock on brother!
Great great story. It is a very Austin story indeed.
What a sweet story!!!
Awesome sounds really good n clean.. ...much respect ... and .. love blues brotha n sista
Awesome interview , Gary is such a down to earth person , He give credit to where credit is due . He says without Eve He wouldn't be Where He is today. Awesome !!!🤚
What a great story. True friendship filled with some of the best times ever.
Nice, saw Gary on the Grammy's and couldn't figure out who he was? Got him now, those two are bad! Thanks
surprisingly both didnt fall in love, they look cute together though
I just wanna hear a full jam session with them
Saw him in concert opening for Clapton in New York, best show I've ever seen, probably will ever see, I'm now a huge fan of him, rock on man
Eve's badass indeed. Has a progressive parents too
This was and will be amazing too watch,on many levels. I discovered Gary Clark Jr because of the Crossroads Dvds and big fan since. This vid is so inspiring.
When they are playing you see so much happiness and pride in Eves face with such a big smile. It's nice:)
I'll be showing this too friends for sure, thankyou.
Never forget the ones that got you there and you’ll never forget where your going.” Why don’t she tour with him. I love that shit.
I hope the collaborate on a few projects
They were taught by some greats! I don't give a damn about color against talent. Humans are humans that we should not discern ourselves upon. You got class your Real!
She is an amazing lady and so are you Gary Clark, y'all's 'realness' speaks volumes about the guitarist life!
Thank you Eve.............
A beautiful love story of two musical soulmates. Great.
What a wonderful clip, they are both the sweetest people on Earth, and it was great to see Clifford too. He did so much for Texas and the musicians too. Thanks Eve, thanks Gary, deserve everything good that comes their way!!
A great american garage story, right on !!!!!!
Gary Clark has some serious talent, I need to see him live!
Blues need to make a come back and keep it blues DO NOT CHANGE IT PLEASE
Great story...black and white...no color with music and friends...God is good
Seriously, who are the 260 people who down voted this? And WHY?
Good stuff. T-Bone was huge for me as well when I was a kid. Nothing like going through blues history and finding those old guys.
Lucky Gary. God send. Some things are made to happen !!!
