Milanese is honestly a bad sandwich but it has a really nostalgic feeling to it. It was our "on the road comfort food". When we were kids, me and my brother couldn't wait to stop at the autogrill to get one!

Its to prevent some damage that would happen to the chips (crisps) when being shipped and sold in stores.
It's the cheapest way to provide padding and detect unwanted crushing.
It also helps if you can imagine what the air smells like as hot crisps come out of the fryer because that's when they get packaged.

I just want to thank Lord Z for doing this series. I work for a small nonprofit organization, and I will probably never get to enjoy this food for myself. It really means a lot to learn about the place he loves, for him to share with all us JOLLY viewers.
The carbonara pizza basically looked like a French/German tarte flambée/Flammenkuchen, which makes a whole lot of sense.

I’m exited for this episode, I moved to Seoul this year to study at SNU, but recently have experienced a lot of homesickness. I’m glad to have the chance to see some European culture… I really miss this food😢 it looks sooo good! Keep up the good work I’ll look forward to future videos :). Can’t wait for a carbonara pizza 😂 even though I think that may be more common here than in Italy😅…

There's some sort of saying "peggio del cibo dell'autogrill" or "costa come il cibo dell'autogrill" where you compare something to Autogrill food and it basically means it's the worst and/or priciest food. 😂

Autogrill is a brand.. they run the largest amount of roadside fast food diners along the italian highways... they are not the only brand.
the brand belongs to the Benetton Family (yes, that Benetton)... and they actually own several similar chains (with other names) across several European nations.
There are several staple sandwiches, and a few slices that you can find everywhere.. other than that, there's a bunch of alternatives that are flavoured regionally, so not every Autogrill carries the same identical menu.
on average, the common sandwiches are..not the greatest... they tend to be a common after-party/end of the night experience, especially so during the summer.
occasionally, the more regional options are made with decent quality ingredients and can actually be quite good.
Much like Z says.. better than MacDonalds, but that's not a high bar to clear.

There's no doubt that Italy has some of the best dishes. Apart from the pasta and gelato, there's an even greater selection to choose from.
I think our top value is the diversity. The food is very different in the 20 regions that form our country. I think strangers who never came to Italy think we all eat the same dishes, all based on pasta, tomato and mozzarella. For example in my region (Piedmont) there isn't a single traditional dish containing tomato or mozzarella.
The best ways to enjoy Jolly in their food videos to prevent drooling n envy:

"Milanese" is becouse of the name of the fried meat inside the sandwitch. The full name is “Cotoletta alla Milanese (something like Wiener schnitzel) is a typical dish of Milan and Lombardy in general. But the real version is much better and is not made with chicken as in the Autogrill version but with veal and it's huge. In Milan it is called "elephant ear"

I spent 3 weeks in Italy on a job and spent a LOT of time driving between Florence and Venice... I am WAY too acquainted with Autogrill. Simple pollo con pomodoro for me. Love that Mr. Z, uh Lord Z, was recognized at Autogrill of all places!

In Portugal we have a pastry called "pastel de Chaves." It's basically the same as sfogliatella but has spiced, minced beef inside. Lovely :)

In the 3 months I lived in Italy, cocaletta ciabatta sandwich from a panini stand was my go to 3+ times a week. They actually knew my first name from my card. The food was amazing!

It's not fair
When I got stationed in Oklahoma, I decided to drive to the state from my previous post instead of flying. When I got to the state of OK I was driving along the highway when I noticed there was a McDonalds built into what I can only assume was an abandoned overpass project. The exit to it wrapped around into a parking lot that was below the restaurant, and the only way up to it was via elevator. It was so strange and so novel, but the business only had like 4 customers. I'm not sure if that place still exists, but it was an experience because due to the building being made of a lot of glass panels, you could see hundreds of cars and trucks speeding below you constantly. It was like being above a race track.
I'm Italian, and I've never seen that Pocket Coffee with a straw. Try the chocolates, they're much better!
The ones with the straw are for the summer, they don't melt
Someone gifted me some of the chocolates. They're hard to find in the States, depending on the weather. That's serious coffee!
Wow, that pocket coffee was new to me, we only have it as a chocolate bonbon, the liquid coffee is inside the chocolate, and you just pop it into your mouth whole 😂
At least someone noticed it. The one in the video is the summer edition, so it doesn't melt. The one you are talking about is available in winter though.

I don't even have to watch this video to confirm that Autogrill is 100% legit and amazing. For an Italian style fast-paced restaurant, the food is incredibly fresh, cheap and delicious. I got better meals here than I did at some other table service restaurants.

I had lunch at a gas station and was blown away. Other than places like Buc-ees, the best food you can find at gas stations here is hot dogs that look like they’ve sat on the warming rollers for 3 weeks.
In Russia once I’ve tried CARBONARA pizza that was pizza with bacon, bechamel sauce and a whole RAW YOLK in the centre! Was pretty good though

My husband and I have spent some time in Italy. I love the AutoGrille It's so much more than a fast food place. It's a rest stop for bathrooms and a gas station. It is an Italian version of a 7/11 . The have CD's an many other things.And most importantly many of them span the entire roadway so you can get to them from either side of the highway.
