So, you DON’T (DO NOT) need to take and pass your STCW Courses before getting your Merchant Mariner Credential (MMA). I just got my MMC without having taken the courses. Now I will take the courses. For those who were curious 🙏🏾
Hey I’m interested in this field of work and I’m tryna follow different videos on advice but could I get your socials and talk more to you about about getting ya Twic card(I already paid it’s being shipped to my house )and where to go from there?
Correct!
Sorry for the late reply. If you have your twic you can go for your MMC classes.
Approved classes
www.dco.uscg.mil/portals/9/NMC/pdfs/courses/courses.pdf?
After that physical and drug test.
I you have all of these before you apply so you can send in everything at one time.
Are the classes free?
@blak_olai how'd you do it? Just apply for it and wait for a response?
Your video is very informative, honestly the best one I found. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent presentation. After 35 years, I'm re-certifying-what a shock that my old credentials need complete updating-this affirms I'm on the right track though-thank you.
Best of luck!
Great advice..there is a dire need for merchant seaman but the process isn't easy..like trying to get an apple through a thorn bush
For sure. It takes some time but it's worth it in the end.
Thank you for all the help you have given me
You are very welcome.
Great video love the way you explain everything. I just recently got my Twic card now I need to do is my medical with concentra I am HVAC technician air-conditioning heating technician looking to work air conditioning technician pretty sure I had to start from entry level work my way out making these great videos. Thank you for the information. Hopefully, hopefully I can find somebody places out here in Orlando, Florida.
You nailed it honestly ❤️🙏🏾
thank you
I found this very helpful.

Just got my merchant marine credential! Happy!
Congratulations, now is a great time to get in lots of jobs available. If you or anyone is looking give Kris Hopkins a call at Seafarers International Union 954-522-7984 (tell him Melissa sent you). Also visit seafarers.org to see what the Seafarers Union can offer you. I have been working with them for 5 years and absolutely love it. I can choose when and where I work, great companies, benefits and money. Its the best game in town!
@@seafarerscookbook8945 Thanks!
@MyMSCLyfe Took about 12 weeks
I am starting from scratch. I need the MMC before joining the CBP academy. I made an appointment today to get the twic card. Let see how it goes
Sorry for the late reply, I am back on land and have wifi now. Not sure what the CBP academy is, Customs and Boarder Control?
Yes United States Customs and Border Protection ( CBP ).
i love how short an sweet this video is. straight to the point with everything i need to get started.
i have a question… what positions would i love for that doesn’t require schooling like SIU or MSC?
i heard it’s OS, Wiper and SA but is it true if i had all my required permits and paperwork i can become an OS and just work my way through the ranks?
i really want to do this😆
Yes those entry level positions you mentioned are positions that you can start with no training and work your way up by taking upgrading courses.
I am working on getting my Merchant Mariner Credential without the training which is a good thing when I called the National Martime Center at Martinsburg, Virginia they said all I have to do is fill out the CG-719B, CG-719K/E and CG-719P applications along with my Transportation Worker Identification Credential then email a copy of it to the Regional Exam Center in Baltimore, Maryland I can’t wait to get my Merchant Mariner Credential for the first time in my life all I have to do is fill out the CG-719P with the medical review officer and get my Transportation Worker Identification Credential by paying $125.25 with Money order then wait until it comes in the mail.
Hey bro so are you saying I can file for a Merchant Mariner Credential with just a TWIC card and take the STCW classes later?
STCW classes are required for the MMC
@@justinjones2044 You can get your MMC before taking the courses. That’s it.
@Deonte Merritt Hi I had a question, where do I have to go so the medical review officer can go over my CG-719P? Is that also done at REC?
@@blak_olaiThanks for this info.
Yeah you're the first person ive ever heard that said you need to get the STCW certificate to apply from what I heard all you need is a passport & TWIC & verifying documents.
You can't sail on the big ships unless you have it.
STCW allows you to sail in international waters.
Good one
Thank you!
Its actuslly insane the barrier to entry for such a low paying dangerous job
Great info. Do you know anything about how to obtain an Able Seaman Endorsement by the USCG?
A school or got the an REC to take the exam with the coast guard
I am in the steward department so I don't have experience with that, but I posted the links from the coast guard site.
www.dco.uscg.mil/nmc/exams/deck_ratings_able_seaman/
Seatime with the Military in a Deck Rating or as an OS in the Merchant Marine, Ability, Knowledge of the Test Questions, Ability to Demonstrate Several Types of Knots and Line Hitches, possibly a school, and Pass the CG Exam of course. Lifeboatman Course is another school that will put you over the top.
Do i still need to do the STCW courses if im prior coast guard (boatswain mate)?
You have to check with the coast guard, I think they do take some prior training into account.
Everyone that works on the water and gets paid for it needs the minimum STCW quals now. You work on an Oil Rig - STCW. Barges on the Mississippi - STCW. Merchant or Cruise Ships - STCW. Tending Row Boat Operator for a Oil/Sewage Discharge Barge - STCW.
Hey do you know if I still qualify if I have received a dishonorable discharge from the military that is equivalent to a felony ?
You need to contact the coast guard. I don't know your exact situation but a criminal record will not always exclude someone. They look at how long ago and if you re-offend.
Can I do the stcw courses after I have the mmc??
No, they must be taken in order to apply.
This my firs time applying going through MMC process. Should I Fill out the form 719K or 719K/E for the medical certificate? I would like to apply on a vessel for Ordinary Seaman or Wiper.
If it were me I would use the 719K. Although a wiper or OS don't normally stand watch you never know what will be called for.
How long does it take? What do you mean by "like forever"?
So when I got mine it took about 9 weeks. Now with all the covid and staff shortages it may take longer. When your application is received you will get an email that will give you the info you need to track the status. It takes time but it is worth it.
Passport Book and Card, TWIC, Medical Exam, Drug Test, Awaiting Medical Certificate and MMC/MMD, I have several Schools that give the STCW and other Courses needed for the Unions ready to go (5 Schools) as soon as the MMC/MMD in my hand. Another Mariner mentioned there was a Medical Card that should be obtained that shows you are Fit for Duty/Drug Free and presented to the Captain of a ship on arrival? As of 2022 they say it is taking 30+ days to process the MMC/MMD. It took me about 6+ months to get my Passport during HIGH COVID. Is there anything else I am missing? I am a Diesel Mechanic School Graduate that is going Wiper. Local Union said I could put my name on the list while I am in STCW to get me a boost out the door.
Sorry for the late reply, its been a wild year. These links should help.

If you haven't gotten a job yet call Kris Hopkins 954-522-7984 at the Seafarers union and checkout seafarers.org .
Say if someone was already in the navy and is a veteran are those watchstanding courses necessary?
It is up to the Coast Guard, I'm not sure but I think they take some of your training into account.
@@seafarerscookbook8945 good God I hope so. Lol! I’m not trying to do the same stuff over again and take unneeded time away from getting to my ship assignment. Thanks!
The important thing is Seatime in a Deck Rating (your DD-214 will have it on the Document) and Ability if you were in the USN or CG. Your Military Certifications won't hurt you but Time and Ability to the Job/Knowledge is where you want to be to advance and pass the CG Exams.
Hey, so I’m trying to get a job as just a deck hand on a ferry boat. It all of this is SUPER confusing. I already have my TWIC , what would be the easiest step to getting my MMC?
Well my friend, the lady that is at the beginning of all these comments is waiting to tell you
Look in to getting your STCW classes.
I'm a truck driver have my DOT physical already, is that the same?
I don't think it is. It may have some of the same things but there is a functional capacity part of the Coast Guard exam that is not part of DOT.
good morning have a few questions that you maybe be able to help me with…17 yrs. ago i had a MMD with AB and lifeboat and i worked offshore for seacor marine…i failed a random drug test for marajuana at which point i surendered my license to an admistrative law judge…long story short i worked a couple land jobs then got in the inland towboat industry and been a deckhand and mate for the past 15 yrs. i now want to obtain my western rivers steersman license and a coast guard guy recommended i just reapply for an mmc because it was so long ago it could be “timed out” and before i wasted a lot of time and money for steersman school the MMC would be a much cheaper way to go that way it would let me know if im even able to get any type of licensure thru the USCG…so that’s where im at now and attempting todo… if any one is in the same boat i am in or has any relative info. on the subject ide be great full!
Reinstatement sounds complicated so I would reach out to the national maritime center and talk to someone there. I did find some information so read them and take it from there.

Bill what were you denied because of? Later in life I have some issues + am trying to get my Captain's license back + enter the merchant Marines + see the world ...
Can I get mmc if I have stcw docs and valid med exam from another country ?
The STCW docs should be ok, because they are required internationally, not sure about the medical. If I find anything I will post a link.
Not any quicker, still need to apply for MMC

@@missymccartney969 thanks for telling me Even though I couldn’t find a school near me for VSO only one named Delgado but they said I have to wait two months idk .If you know any schools around Louisiana or in and you think you can help can write them here for me because I couldn’t find any and thanks again 🙂
How did you get your time on water requirements
There was no requirement to have been on the water for entry level. If you have other endorsements there may be a requirement. I work in the steward department so there isn't any for us.
To advance in your maritime career, you need time at sea punching holes in the water. Keep meticulous records of your voyages and retain every piece of discharge paper when departing the vessel. Good luck!
How would you email if you print out or do you just take pics and email them
Sorry so late with a response, no wifi on my current ship. But anyway, you can scan the paperwork and attach it to an email. If you don't have a scanner I think there is an app for your phone or if you have a thumb drive take it to a library or Office Depot.
Seafarers Cookbook Thank you!
@Nicole Sage I sail as a chief cook or a Steward.
What the beat online cousre I'm 28yrs old and work full time but don't have time for campus
There is not an online options since so much of it is hands-on. However, I was in the same position, I was 45 when I started and couldn't take a year off. I went to get my STCW at a school in Fort Lauderdale and then joined the union. Went out on my first ship a few weeks after I got my MMC at an entry level position. I can be done without school, the school is a great thing but may not work for everyone. Call the closet union hall to you and see if you can start that way. We are in need of deck and engine positions.
Wait so i got my TWIC card now I'm working on getting my MMC, do i have to do STCW before getting MMC?
Yes, it is part of the required training and you can not get a job at sea without it.
No, it depends on what you want to do. Inland jobs and jobs on vessels below 200 tons do not require STCW. The fishing industry is not subject to STCW too.
If you're going for MSC they will give you STCW for free
Cart before the horse. You will NEED an STCW and maybe some other courses first before you go to work. Get the MMC FIRST just in case you are held up or denied for some reason. You'll be out the money if you are denied or held up for a long period of time. Be safe and conserve your cash - spend it as you achieve each goal.
@@exexpat11 So if I’m wanting to work on towboats on the Mississippi for awhile to save money to work on cargo ships going overseas you’re saying just have my TWIC and MMC first then take the STCW classes when I’m ready to go on bigger ships?
did you go into the SIU ?
No, I started when I was 45 so I had years of cooking experience. I do go there to upgrade and take other courses
What company are you with
Can you get in even if you have eczema
yes
Do you have to get STCW if you want to do SIU? Don’t they do that in their apprenticeship program?
If you are going to Piney Point you will get it there. If not you need to get it on your own. I went to MPT in Fort Lauderdale.
What is STCW?

And as well no one speaks on the process for getting a MMC with a misdemeanor on their record can you speak more on those types of things.
I really need to know more about this, im 21 with DUI records and i already got my twic and it looks like getting an MMC will be way more complicated.
@@xavier.g7565 join "seafarers of piney" & "$ailor gang" on facebook. its full of people already in the industry & people like us looking to get in. Join those groups you'll get lots of your questions answered there as ive gotten many of mine answered & i Haven't even been in for a week.
Not sure about this one. Checking with the coast guard is the way to find out.
@@xavier.g7565 There are some crimes that totally exclude you from getting an MMC. Murder, Racketeering, Drug Trafficking, Terrorism, Mob Related Crimes. Drug and Alcohol Offenses are bad as well however how long ago the offense was and the severity will be taken into account. I think someone said DUI is ten years past the offense to reapply for an MMC/MMD. Always be HONEST on your forms. It is all good.
@@exexpat11 so on updated news the MSC offer has been rescinded but i havent lost hope and graduated a Driving With Care program last month and am attending more future classes to make my name look good
is weed a disqualifier in the drug test?
Yes, because seafarers are covered by international standards.
The fact you would even ask that cracks me up.
