i love this video so simple and the way you have both sides on the screen... for me im going with MSC ...going to apply for all my stuff and aim for mid year next year to join... i love the sea i dont care where i go as long as im out to sea the world im good with that
Your videos are very informative about the maritime industry. Thank you for being so detailed about SIU vs MSC. This information will really help folks decide which is better for them.
hey Chief! can you make a video on the various hazards onboard MSC ships? if able, can you elaborate on asbestos exposure and containment on ships? engine room and deck side safety and health hazards? common injuries? and lastly, how health care and dental care works when deployed? loving all the videos!!
Would you please make a video on how or where to find jobs as an Ordinary seaman? (I got my TWIC & MMC) but I have no idea where to start? There’s so many terms, boats & endorsements. I don’t know what I’m able to work on as an OS. I don’t have a preference I just want to make decent pay & get sea time.
You can sell your military time to get a federal retirement after completing 20 years combined. Biggest difference is you won’t get paid federal retirement until retirement age.
You mentioned a way to advance beyond entry level Utilityman to either Ordinary Seaman or Wiper is training through MSC. Is their training prior to being hired by MSC to qualify as Wiper or Ordinary Seaman?
Apprenticeship with a union or MSC. MSC does not have a Apprenticeship. They have a training path though. Check out SIU's and MSC'S websites for more details. 🙂
I dont see any real benefit to SIU. I watched some RUclipsrs say its better, but I think its based on the job. IT vs Cook, would be a totally different experience I guess.
Thank you for helping me to decide on which organization to attend. How long is school and while at school can you go home on the weekend? When I went to MSC job fair the recruiters said the rotation is 4/2 is that true? Can I have a goatee while on a ship or does it depend on the captain or ship?
if i was at the same MSC fair as you were the recruiter had a helluva beard 😂 i hear you do have to shave to comply with OSHA gas mask requirements but i have seen MSC post pictures recently of bearded deck watch standers so it may be up to the captain. as for the rotation, they just changed it from 4/1 to 4/2, but in order to meet that two month off time they have to hire a lot more people, which they don’t have right now. So if you do join, don’t be surprised if it’s closer to 5/1 or 6/1.
@@OfficialFriendzone I know MSC is a federal job but I have applied numerous times and still keep getting not selected. Maybe they need to not take so much time to approve someone. I have have 7 years of sea time through my time in the Navy. How can I get those years counted for?
@@The1stAvengeri just got out of the navy after 9 years, and i have about 5 years sea time. trying to figure this out as well. i know im your DD114 it has your total sea service time
@@The1stAvenger you get your Navy time counted for through your MMC. When you apply for you MMC you put in for what ever endorsements you would like to request based on your time and training in the Navy. If you are eligible they will allow you to test to get those endorsements on your MMC. Then whenever you apply to MSC for whatever position, your MMC booklet will show that you have experience for that position.
My only question is . I'm a former civmar, I'm interested in coming back to Msc , my question is would I have to put in application to get back in to msc again
You bring up a bunch of good points about union vs MSC. However, there are a couple of things everyone should be aware of about MSC. First off, unless you are a wiper/supply utility/OS, your hitch will almost always be longer than 120 days. They are more than happy to let you sit down n that boat and pay the pittance that is the penalty. I saw a Chief Electrician on my boat sit for a year overdue, and I’m not joking. So if you need defined time off, the union contract is better. Second, it is softer at MSC. That means that when you’re busting your rear end, and someone isn’t pulling their weight, they probably aren’t going to get penalized. MSC is really bad about discipline, and it results in some really bad actors being able to skate through the company.
Excellent video. I’m a 20 year fisherman. North Atlantic scalloping. It’s over, use to have 160 days at sea, now 20 days at sea. I’ve been engineer, and first mate. Have plenty of sea time documented. I’m 43 years old, in good shape. Have money for school at San Jacinto College for deck ratings. With your experience what would be my best course to enter the merchant marine. Self school at college, 4k 3 months or so. At my age would I be a candidate for SIU apprenticeship, how difficult is it to get into MSC?
Witht the economy taking a downturn.... getting into the apprenticeship program is 4-6 months it seems and MSC is hiring entry level on and off. Recommend you check out both of the websites for current updates and openings.
So in 2007 i lost my z card from USCG got it back a year later but the politics from them nobody would hire me I was a AB gulf of Mexico so what is chances of work
I just obtain my merchant mariner credential and I also have my twic card and medical certificate. How do I go about searching for entry level job as a wiper ?
I know this sounds stupid but i feel like joining MSC would be my personal way of serving my country. I dont know if there is any merit to that just an observation going into the maritime world myself.
Hi Sean,Your observation makes a lot of sense and definitely has merit. Joining the Military Sealift Command (MSC) can be seen as a way to serve your country by supporting naval operations and ensuring the logistical needs of the Navy are met. Many people who transition into the maritime world, especially those with a background in service, find a similar sense of purpose and contribution. It's a unique and valuable way to continue serving, even outside of traditional military roles. Good luck on your maritime journey! John
Although union work is delineated in the contract, you may be asked to do various jobs outside the normal job discriptions and can be a bit more arduous than MSC IMHO.

Join MSC or union bro. It's pretty self explanatory

Great way to start

Hey, I'm from Utah and am 18. I'm thinking about going into this. Where would you recommend I get started, or what are some helpful things to know.
If college is an option.... I would apply for a maritime school... becoming an officer. If you are interested in an apprenticeship.Union or MSC. 🙂.

What is the age limit and if they have international jobs overseas.

Don’t bother. It’s a scam. Unfortunately MSC is full of no loads. You’ll waste your life away.

Not that I am aware of. However, depending on rate, rank and sea time, you may be able to start out as a AB vice OS.

How does a mmc holder get a job thru siu without attending the academy?
Complete all your training and certifications on your own, and then head to a union hall to join.

Nope, something totally differnt. MSC is maritime logistical support for armed forces, but just goverment "Federal employees"
So does the pay end up being the same anyway or does SIU pay more due to the vacation pay?
Can you join both?
Yes.... but no. You can be in MSC and join Union. But trying to work for both would waste in dues and be challenging
