What is up everybody.
I decided to make another video on how to become a merchant mariner.
The first video I ever made was this one so I feel after officially being monetized I should make another one updated and a little more in depth lol.

Even though the passport takes longer I tell people to get the TWIC first. For new passports they send off your birth certificate whereas TWIC locations just scan it and give it back
I also went to the same I/O locaiton. You have to pay for both the drug test and the physical.
Ahh okay I wasn't sure if It would have been one payment or 2 separate because I went 2 separate times.
And as for the passport the reason why i always say passport first is because, if for some reason you can't obtain your passport then you essentially wasted your time getting the twic if the only reason you got it is to be a merchant mariner.

I’m actually a passport agent at the post office and I’m considering switching to merchant marines! You might start seein comments from me on your vids lol thanks for all this info! The vacc is the only thing hindering me… not tryna get that. You’d think all that would’ve died down by now 😏
I haven't taken the Vax and I still don't plan on it but I've heard its really hindering people still. Some companies don't require it but it's starting to be fewer and further in-between

No. A medical choice should never be a condition of employment. That backward thinking is why the industry is taking a loss. (Rightfully so I'll add)

I'm in the same boat (no pun lol) I really need to pursue this, but I just feel like the vacc shouldn't be mandatory. I know waay too many people who took it and get sicker than they ever have.

Hey! great video. Is there anyway to gain experience for positions like deckhand or OS for someone who is starting out in this industry? Or is there some sort of training that happens before you start?
Some companies hire entry levels and pay for all training like mine but you should apply all around and see who gives you a call
What about the basic training do you need to do it after or before you put in for entry level??

Naw just submit all documents and just wait for your credentials. When you submit and get the email back saying they received your documents, you should receive an tracking email to see where they are at in the process if getting your credentials

My husband has an appt for his passport application tomorrow. Can we just submit the MMC credential application while awaiting for the passport? He has everything done except for the passport.
Appointment? just go to your local post office and sit and wait and get it right there. But yes does he have his twic card already?

Just need my MMC and passport for this other towboat company thats paying triple than what i am making according to google. Lol but the application process is through SIU. is anything i should know about the process in particular with SIU and whats that section under the endorsements part of the application? What should i write there ? Lol its a lot i know . But hit me back..
I never worked for siu but I know they will send you to there maritime school on Maryland if you go that route.
As far as endorsements on your mmc application just put entry level. You csmt put stcw cuz you don't have those yet. So yeah hit entry level and send all your paper work in at the same time.
Hey @Mike Mills, I'm applying entry level out of Houston office but stay in central Tx. On the MMC app, can I still check the STCW box even though I still have not taken the STCW course? Appreciate the vids btw been a huge help. Also, let me know if you do any 30min or 1 hr coaching calls might have more questions.
No you can't check if you don't have your stcws. And yes we can do a video call. Just hit my Instagram up and we can set the details up then.

Whatsup man, i’m from VA too and i just submitted my mmc application to the baltimore REC almost 2 days ago. i’ve been kind of skeptical because I haven’t gotten a confirmation email saying that they have received my emails. I also read somewhere that they need a reference number to notify me but i don’t have one because i’m new to this.
Just give them your social when you call.
Can you do a video on STCW class? A detail of the 5 days at class.

Umm....if I remember right just put either N/A or if it's the check boxes just hit the entry level box

You get a copy of the results and you send it to the the place where uou send you mmc documents..make sure it is signed by the doctor

If you don't have your Redbook you can't go out to sea. But you can sail on fishing boats. Check locally and ask. They actually make.pretty good money depending on the season.
Hello I wanted to know if you have to get any vax before getting the credentials or training ? I am considering this field but I'm discouraged because I don't want to put my body at risk.
Good timing. Umm...to get your credentials you don't have to take anything but upon being selected for any company they might require vaccinations after you finish orientation. But idk. I don't take vaccinations anymore but when I first came in I did. So I wouldnt know what they do if you refuse in thr beginning.

Do you share rooms with others on most ships? What’s your favorite ship/travel destinations?
Also, is there an AB/Deck shortage with the MSC?
I got a buddy who’s in Dubai right now with MSC, knew him years ago when I was in the navy

Mike is there no medical teams on the ships if you get really sick? For example, what if you get Bronchitis or Pneumonia? Do they give you antibiotics? I mean I heard stories from my dad's day in the Merchant Marines. He got appendicitis and he had to wait a few days before they got to port to remove it. But that was back in the late 70's. Is that true nowadays? Truthfully, I have a passport, I have a CDL A and work experience in business and education. But they only thing holding me back is dealing with crazy health problems. I don't have health problems but things can happen and it is nice to have control over things. Thank you!
Lo my guy they maybe have 1 medical officer on board and they don't have a full hospital mainly just someone that will help with minor scrapes and bruises so if you have real ailments they can't do anything for you my guy

I got my TWIC and at the same place did my drug test and CG719k. I think I forgot the form B. Do I gotta do it again or could I send it in?
Just send it in. they'll instruct you if you need something else

To come in as an entry level yeah you can just get your credentials and apply for a company that takes entry levels and has training.

@binggan9156 depends what you entry to come in as. If you wanna become a mate go to an actual maritime school but if you want to make money now and work your way up to apply for companies that take entry level positions
Thank you!! How quickly can one get all this done and how long is the overall process from passport, twic card to getting assigned to a ship?
I got fired from Local 1 NY on March 15 ish and me having my TWIC and my passport already was on my first ship on Sept 19 that’s including 3 weeks detox before I took the medical.
I started my process in September and I’m at the end of my process I only have to take a drug test for MSC and than I will be able to attend NEO/Training. But I already had my passport.
I’m thinking I would be on a ship sometime in May.
Anywhere to 2 or 3 months to 4 to 6 months. And if you haven't started on anything it may take longer because after you get all credentials you still have to be hired by a company and that could take 6 months up to a year. So it's hard to be exact

That's your base pay. All money you make is through overtime. And most ships give enough to double your base pay
I start school this month I just got my merchant seamen manual book is it hard learning the tying knots and ship terminology

I'm looking for a class 2 UK certificate of competency. Is there any way I can opt for the marine engineering licence in the USA?
I have no idea, BUT you can go to the website I showed on the video and call their number and ask. Like these questions, I feel bad becsussd I have no idea, and I hate not knowing what to tell you. I'm sorry. Your best bet is to call the US Coast Guard and ask.

My company sends you through the basic firefighting and lifeboat training. But any specialty training you have to go on your own or time or be approved for specific classes

To apply for your merchant Mariner credentials you need your twic. You can get your passport whenever but I suggest you get it same time as your twic.

Lol depends on company, ship, your position. But you can always bring your own as long as it fits you shoukd be good.

Yo Mike I have all of my credentials, my passport, mmc, medical certificate and Twic. Only thing I'm stuck on is getting this yellow vaccination card. Long story short, I have family in the merchant seaman industry(SIU). I went the hall in Philadelphia today ready to pay $515. Then they tell me I have to get a drug test and physical. And I already did that shit when I applied for my mmc/medical certificate smh. What does this physical consist of?
Honestly I never heard of the vaccine card cuz I never needed one. The physicsl/drug test you would have done it when was doing the paper work for your medical certificate.
So thr vaccine card might be an SIU thing. Not an Merchant Mariner thing because I don't take any vaccines.

You can't soal without your Redbook
But you can go to local marinas and see Amy lobster diving or fishing boats need helping hands they pay pretty decent depending on the season while you wait for al your stiff
