      Hey, Dexter245
      The way merchant seaman are paid is a lot different than a normal job because most job won’t give you a base salary and overtime.
      With SIU some ships give you a high base wage $4,000 a month so without working any overtime you’re guaranteed $4,000 a month now normally if a company has a high base salary then their overtime rate might only be $19.00. Then you have some ships that have a low base wage let’s say $3,000 but the overtime rate is $27 a hr and the amount they pay for vacation pay is also higher. Basically when most of us look at the contract for a ship we look at the base wage and how much the overtime rate is then we multiple the overtime rate by 180hrs overtime for the month and base off of the total we determine if we want to take the job or not. I hope that helped. Don’t forget to pick up my book it’s available on Amazon just click the link below ⬇️ Please leave a 5start rating and write a short review. Thanks in advance.

    I heard vacations paid are only picked up in person as they don’t do direct deposits for that.

      You’re more than welcome brother and thank you for watching. That’s a great idea. I know a lot of seaman that work/sail in the US but live in another country. When they’re ready to work they fly back to the states and board the ship.I’ve seen people that have a US mailing address as their permanent resident for one of the states in the US that doesn’t have state sales tax like Texas or Florida. People that are permanent resident of one of these states won’t have state taxes taken out of their checks. Something for you to think about and look into because this would be a big savings.SIU doesn’t care where you live as long as all of your documents are current Mmc, TWIC, drug test, medical certificate……etc. I hope that helped @Donatello777

    I quit sailing in '97. In my day, unlicensed crew( non union) would work 90/45 day rotation,and licensed crew 60/60. Is it still the same?

      Hello, Joseph Regalado
      Yeah for the most part it’s still the same. Some of the licensed crew now do 75/60 and some ships still do the 60/60. The some unlicensed do 90/45 but they also do 120/60 as well. Thanks for watching.

    If someone has medical issues, are they disqualified from working on ship?

    • @merchantseamancommunity8302
      @merchantseamancommunity8302  Год назад

      Thanks for watching geddon436. The answer is it depends. For example if someone has high blood pressure or diabetes but a doctor has given them a prescription and with the prescription it keeps their blood pressure and blood sugar stable and manageable then that wouldn’t disqualify someone because the doctor said that you’re able to work as long as you take your medicine. If your medical condition prevents you from getting a medical certificate or passing a coastguard physical then you can ask them what documentation you may need from a doctor in order to get approved if possible. Some medical conditions a doctor won’t approve for someone to work if it will be unsafe for the person. I hope that helped.

Call Meranda (757) 341-6813 she works for MSC and tell her about your sea time and ask her what opportunities are available for you with MSC. With your sea time you may be able to start at a position above entry level. Also, I have a list of private companies, unions and programs that you could join. That alone is a big savings. Merchant seaman classes and courses are not cheap if you’re not in the union any class or course will cost you from
      $800-$2,500 per class/course.

    how many times a year do you work on ships? do you have another job lined up as soon as this course is done? this job sounds great and the pay looks great well compared to anything im making.

    • @merchantseamancommunity8302

      Hello, Molotov Bang
      Thanks for watching. I use to work 8months out of the year. I would work 4months straight then be off for 2months then another 4 months and 2 months off. Now as far as SIU you only have to sail 3 months out of the year to keep your seniority and your medical benefits. As far as SIU and many other unions. Look at yourself as an independent contractor. When you’re ready to go to work then you go to the union hall and you look for work.The unions have an agreement with the shipping companies to supply them with qualified workers to fill all the positions on their ships. . You will normally see jobs posted for 4 months, 2 months, 90 days, 60 days,75 days, 45 days,…… etc so you bid for the job you want. I know some guys that live in the Philippines 🇵🇭 and Mexico 🇲🇽 and they only sail 4 months out of the year. The money they make during those 4 months is more than enough for them to pay their bills for the rest of the year. Once your contract is over with a shipping company then because you’re a independent contractor then you can go back to union hall and look for work again or you can apply for unemployment because the contract you had with that shipping company has now ended.Now probably about 60% of the shipping companies claim their headquarters out of Florida so the unemployment is not a lot maybe after tax $275.00 a week. The other shipping companies that are based out of other states unemployment pay more. Also, remember if you work at least 60 days on a ship for SIU you will receive a vacation check so this will also help pay your bills once you get off a ship and you’re home taking a break. Also, some guys do have jobs lined up when they get off the ship and want to be home a while before they ship out again. They drive Uber, or work with lawn care companies or go to temp agencies. This is by far in my opinion the fastest way to make a whole lot of money in a short amount of time. Definitely pays more than most jobs on land. I hope this helped. @@FriendlingIlocano welcome to the brotherhood of the sea!! I’m happy for you that you decided not just to settle for your job but to step out and begin your journey as a merchant seaman. I have nothing bad to say about SIU. However, I will say that the SIU is not the only place where you can start your career. I would look at all the different unions, programs, and private companies I have in my book. Just click the link below ⬇️ See what are the pros and cons of each and then decide where you want to start. Regardless, of where you start I would have a exit plan before you start sailing so if you decide you want to stop sailing at some point you will have something outside of the shipping industry to fall back on. Yes, being a merchant seaman does give you a lot of freedom once you get off the ship. Use your freedom and money wisely when you get off the ship. If you like real estate use some of your freedom and money to go to real estate investing seminars/courses or stock investing seminars/courses or buying a car wash business seminars/courses…… etc. May God bless you on your journey and keep me and the Merchant Seaman Community posted about how things are going for you. www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Becoming-Merchant-Seaman-ebook/dp/B093CBNT3G/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=1SGBO1SJFA5ZW&keywords=the+complete+guide+to+becoming+a+merchant+seaman&qid=1645113105&sprefix=the+complete+guide+to+becoming+a+merchant+seaman%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-1
