Hi all, please note that since this video is about the pros of maritime, which is why it might seem to be sugar coating some of the hardships in this industry. I do have another video "10 reasons why maritime sucks" which outlines the downside of the industry. Second thing: as a Canadian I've declared non-resident which is why i do not get taxed. Some citizens such as Hong Kong, allow tax free even for residents as sailors work in international waters, so it depends on various countries (ie. USA have one of the strictest tax laws, so im not sure about them) Third..heres the 400k job: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_pilot (use CTRL-F to search "salary")
JeffHK I’ve been looking into it (going into the industry) and US tax law is pretty ridiculous. Taxes go by citizenship, so even if I’m living and working outside the country, I’m paying US taxes, ON TOP OF whatever local taxes there are.
If you're out of country 330 days/year, you have a foreign earned income exclusion. You only have to pay if you earn a fair bit over $100K/year, and it's only on that income over the exclusion limit. www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion
Most of those tax rates you're talking about are marginal tax rates. See a really good description and example here: www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/05/marginaltaxrate.asp
Let's not forget, during those 6 months at sea, you're getting payed and you aren't making excessive purchases to waste your paycheck since there aren't really many stores
Is it really? Because i'm currently 18 and on my final year of maritime school and allmost all of my colleges in my class are extroverted unlike me who prefers to stay at home and play videogames or study. So I am really scared that if I go on maritime college and later on ship, I wouldn't be happy. What do you think? Sry for my english
MLG Frog you will be fine. Even the most introverted individuals will want to socialize while at sea, believe it or not. You're still young, change will happen.
I mean the guy in the vid said before he joined he played League of Legends all day, and look at how well adapted he is. Trust yourself. You might be surprised at how resilient and adaptable you really are.
I'd consider this career if I was young and single. I worked in the oil industry for a few years and made $100k with no college degree. Firefighter school was fun.
really? are you carzy? iotsa fuking stupid life, also its hard work , not paid well, and you bring lack of wealth to your home. you live in a jail. GOOD LUCK, companies will deceive you!
I’m 47 and have spent 13 years offshore. I would think of that as credit toward sea time. I’m also considering this as a new profession. I love and miss the ocean. This video struck home with me. Even though I’m not a teenager trying to figure life out.
robin vail you are in a cell that you move. Being a trucker is the worst. Why....... you travel the US. You are in the truck all day and you ain’t getting paid when ur not driving but your still there in the cell.
Wow. Funny how something so little and easy to miss as this video can change someone’s life. I’m 15 now, in high school. And constantly wondering and troubled about what I should do with myself in the future. I think I might’ve found one answer.
I'm 20 now, I used to have the same anxiety. There are sooooo many careers out there if you learn a trade. You can make hundreds of thousands a year as a 204 inspector on construction sites. You have to travel a lot in construction, but you make a lot too. Welding, pipe fitting, inspecting, heavy equipment operation (especially cranes).
I'm a financial market trader. I trade under brokerage so i don't really get to do anything, i only receive weekly profits. I sit all day going through Internet and watching TV. I can fit to this kinda job. I love it.
I invest in financial market too. It's a very lucrative and profitable side hustle. Once you use a broker, you can go about your daily business. Make your time count instead of watching TV.
I really like your perspective on solitude! I think one has to learn to be truly happy alone with noone else around to actually live life to the fullest. Friends, family, everything other than you is not what brings that amazing feeling of fulfillment although that is a very nice 'cherry on the top' after you've learned to accept solitude. This video inspires me to go at my plans and get it done correctly, thank you!
Well said! being away from all the luxury, amenities, distraction from bombard of social media allowed me understand myself what I truly want to accomplish and become in life. Was also a good way to develop a habit to focus on priorities and discipline myself
JeffHK very true! Self discipline is such an amazing thing when done right. Being away from social media, you really don't have anyone else other than yourself so why not try and get along with yourself, right? ...istead of chasing after the unnecesary information that can be found on Facebook and what not. Thinking about it like this I can't wait to get to work in the maritime industry!
Too much of solitude can lead to depression and homesickness. Once in a while everyone needs a change. Like you mentioned in the video ' why maritime sucks' humans are social animals. Reminded me of cast away when tom hanks has to talk to the football wilson when he is marooned on island. This is the reason why merchant navy isnt for everyone. At one point of time one's personal life does suffer if you are married and leave your wife and kids for 6 months at sea. Still i appreciate your perspective. I would like to know more about satellite internet...
No doubt depression and home sickness is common in maritime. But inbetween ports, satellite internet, satellite phone, and the friends/co-workers onboard the ship, most average seafarers will get through fine.
lol this is nothing compared to greece. in its first year, a company has to pay 110% of its revenue to the government. thats right. you have to GIVE MORE MONEY TO THE GOVERNMENT THAN YOU MAKE!
Retired US Navy, enjoy your vlog! Many of your thoughts and experiences remind me of how similar life on board a civilian cargo ship is to being on board a military vessel once you are underway. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
Update: so after some research on yt lol i found that there is usually 3 paths to go down. First is the deck which leads more towards becoming a captain and running the top side of the ship. Second is the engineers which lead to becoming a chief engineer and basically takes on the role of making sure the ship runs. Then finally if you wanna cook you can be the chef and make sure the people eat
Absolutely, as long as you are single.Totally single.I went three years without having a real home, loved it. 7 months at sea, next 5 as an assistant N.A.I.A. Hoops Coach, lived in a campus studio apartment. Did this for two years. Underway, no need to spend much, not that many opportunity's either. Just pay for bar tabs. Housing ,food, medical covered. No car expense.Tried to do it married, missed a kids birth almost , birthdays, summer vacations, every day family life. School functions, and not there to help my wife with real time situations. But if you are single, O M G what a life.
After 18y in the industry. So far I've worked in Cruise Ships, RoRo-Pax, Research and Commercial/Private Yachts. Though my needs have changed I feel Maritime is still a great sector to be in. Good to see you promoting it!
@@mourinenelima to get in depends on what you are interested in. If you want to go to sea, then there are 4 paths: Deck, Engineering, Hospitality side and Catering. If it’s yachting you want to get into, there are plenty of ways in. Simply look up yacht recruitment. If it the hospitality side, best you develop some skills shore side first. If it’s Deck or Engineering, look for a Cadetship.
never even thought about this as a career choice... its not promoted in the inner city like military nursing and truck driving for ex. very interesting.
As former sailor in the U.S. Navy, I commend you a lot for this videos. I always wondered what life is like a merchant (not from just those documentaries on tv). In a lot of ways the lifestyle on board are similarwith having a chain of command, separation of duty, inspections ect, ect, ect. In light of recent incidents, I really enjoyed my time at sea. No better feeling than standing on foscle and watching all type of vessels sail by. Oh and the rough seas haha. Fair winds and following seas man
You know what's interesting, is what you said toward the end of the video- how solitude has made you realize the fragility and pure majesty of life. And wanting to make a difference. These are the same conclusions that I've come to (and I suspect a lot of other people have too). It really strikes home. Well, I can tell you that you've made a difference in my life. You've opened the door to a possible route I can take my life down in case my primary interests or goals don't come to fruition. Looking out into the open ocean with nothing around me except the stars and water, made me really appreciate how lucky we all are to even exist in the first place.
i have had several fellow workers who worked in the merchant marine..none of the made more than $100K even after 14 years. Ship Captains make around $150k a year so where are you getting $400k a year?
@@mynameis______392 They are a rare breed and if you want to become one of those 400K ones, you need to be family or a really close friend. It's all shielded off... No one gets a job from the outside, cruise captains is where the money's at, but then again is it a nice job??
Exactly, a VLCC or LNG Captain can expect 15-18K a month and they sail for 6 months a year. So this is pure bullshit to tell to people 400K a year. Pilot salary even at Ras Tanurah Oil Port is really less than 400k a year....
I am about to be sent to my first assigned vessel in a couple of days or so and I stumbled upon this. This really made me excited and look forward to my life on board. I think what I realized in this video is that our job is all about how you look at it and your attitude towards it. If you consider it a job. Than it will become a boring and stressful ride. But if you look at it like it's an adventure and self improvement then you might even like it better when your on board rather than being on land. Thanks. You really made my day bro
@@simonji2940 Not unless you're voting out anyone from a party with "socialist" in the name. Sure, everyone is going to _claim_ they will reduce taxes, but politicians get elected on _lies_ and the public is stupid enough to believe them over and over again.
People stuck on land have no excuse to take a break... some of us can be at work all week but never get that 3 months of rest we need. I have been in a situation where I work close to 12 hours a day, no matter how much weekend you have you can never recover from it. The reason why you like being out at sea is the same reason why I like being in Tasmania, being far away and alone can be great for reflection, and I think it's becoming more and more difficult for those working in the office, especially in Singapore. It's why I don't blame people for going crazy or becoming narrow-minded.
Work culture differs from country to country, as well as from industry to industry... sometimes you have to choose between getting paid to work like a slave or don't work at all...
Requires a special type of person to enjoy this job. Anyone considering working at sea should really think about how they will cope mentally being away from home and things you enjoy.
I really want to be a maritime officer and want it it for whole my life (now 17) but i am scared that ai and robots do the jobs for me so I end up jobless can you maybe give a tip of what to do? (i really hope to be a captain someday)
Abel Van Marle I would think that by the time AI rips through the shipping industry, you could easily have enough expertise that you're still a valuable employee. Let's say in 30 years, AI eliminates 50% of Maritime Mariner positions... At that point, you'd be 47 years old. At that age you will have a ton of experience and be at the peak of your career, and thus your livelihood would be safe at that point IMO.
In our lifetime (we're around the same age), I don't think we will trust AI to take the helm 100%. We will still want human backups, and if you really do want to be a captain, your aspirations will lead you to be the human backup that everyone can count on when AI shits the bed.
You could run these "what if's" scenarios with any job. If it happens, it happens. Don't let that stop you from doing what you want to do though. Even if they were to be piloted by AI/Robots, you still need physical people near to do other tasks or to take over incase there is an emergency. Look at aircraft pilots, many planes now can auto take off and auto land, yet they still have two pilots ready at the stick if something were to go bad.
I love this entire video. I have found self improvement to be my pastime. It’s all I do, learn skills, or think philosophy. I feel like Iv seen so much through imagination that I can completely relate. It really draws me in.
Hey guy's am Anthony from Africa..........am 16 year's old just got a admission to maritime university am so grateful.....thanks for this video I once think I will spend my life in sea never knew there was holiday.......thanks again.......i wish to be a captain someday
I don't have any specific interest in the Maritime industry, but i've really been enjoying your channel on the topic... because of how interesting your videos are! Keep up the great work, "matey"! lol
Wow. This my other choice of career when I was younger (because my dad is also maritime)Im pretty sure this job fits me as I also love soltitude, but I took IT instead. I don't regret anything very close on finishing a coding bootcamp. Someday I knew I could also travel the world. We have our own timezones. Happy to stumble to your channel as I will have a different perspective if I had different choices in my life.
@@kaptainset I'm a web dev now, life has been good and bad. Had a lot of responsibilities in my work that I'm proud of but I'm not yet satisfied to where I'am now. Jeff I live right next to Cal Maritime here in the states and see the training vessel almost every day. I won’t ever go into Maritime but your insight is amazing. Thanks for putting in the time. Different perspectives make us better people. Great to see what the cadets get to experience when they leave .
I attended Cal Maritime and have helped two others go through that school as well. One graduated in 2010 and the other graduated in 2020. It is a great school and there are other opportunities besides sailing when you graduate from there. One of the guys I helped graduated from there with Mechanical Engine degree. He is currently doing great in his career. Ram
My uncle was working with a Maritime Company and retired in 2012 and it didn't pay well for him. He regrets it. He even went to that Maritime school in Maryland to get recertified.
I used to be a ship physician in the navy and later cruise ships. Most exiciting and fulfilling and reasonably well remunerated as well. But it's a young man's game. I have a lovely family and home that I enjoy coming back to each day. Kudos to people who are still able to do 6 months tours of duty. But as you grow older your priorities change.
Two years after high school I looked into the Merchant Marines. The shop steward asked me to step in his office. He said, I am going to talk to you like you are my own son. “The US Merchant Marines are a thing of the past”. All those ships you see out there are mostly manned by people from other countries
I start Southampton Maritime Academy in September - As a deck officer ! All my best regards from the UK Jeff! Again thanks for the amazing content and inspiration :D
The Adventures Of Porteous Hi 👋 did you go straight from school into southampton college? I’m 23 and work in a hospital in a “skilled” job but want a career change.
I'm finishing all my subjects on december, and going on board as a cadet next year, and for some reason you talking about solitude and loving what you do, trully putting your emotions in this video calmed me, I hope I get to feel like you someday. Keep up the good work.
I’m 18 and I decided that this is what I want to do as my career. I just want to thank you for giving me the insight on what I should be expecting when I leave next month, you helped me so much and I appreciate it. Thanks.
Improving yourself is very good idea being isolated on a ship. Really makes you think that you should do that, you dont have distractors. Eventually if you really really prefer passive rest, you can do stuff like downloading 1Tb of series/movies (or anime, just me :3), 50+ books to read (in my case mangas), download some of old videos from YT, get the laptop with some cool older games (there's a plenty of them before the time of internet) and you are done with boredom! Or just learn stuff on computer - like Jeff :P That's not that hard. Everyone just need to find their way to cope with that. Of course it is not possible for everyone.
Love it. I'm an OTR truck driver in USA. Get to see the entire lower 48 continental/ from coast 2coast. "See the country" but only at night, going 60 mph. All cities and towns are viewed from the bypass route around the city/ avoiding the downtown/ city center area.
Was going to become an economist. Watched tons of videos about seafaring and quited my university after 1st year of study. Already have passed 2 years in maritime uni and had a 2.5 month practice. Totally worth it. In 3.5 years i will become the most satisfied 4th engineer in the fucking world. Guys, im just really happy about that. GL everyone
Really? wow! it's a good thing they went away because the lost of the oocl Atlanta would be a huge loss. one more thing... have u ever sailed to the port in Providence Rhode Island?
Jamie Williams that's where you are wrong. Naval duties cost me 6 months at sea and 6 months at land. Beside the salary that its quite high i can travel around the world for free. My hometown is Thessaloniki Greece
this really sounds like a good path for me, i’m 14 and heading into high school and this is the first time i’ve seen myself in this career. i’ve always been worried about not finding an interest when i’m out of school and being left stranded, so trust me when i say i’ve checked out a lot of majors that interest me
Solitude, you’ve nailed it. I think I should plan for some more of that (in my short 2 day weekend, haha). Thanks for the good ideas and pleasant story of your life at sea!
Wish i wouldve known about becoming a merchant marine earlier in life, this is something i wouldve loved to have done, im 50 yrs old now so i know im too old.
ya Maritime Pilots in the USA, the catch is it takes about 7~8 years to get a Captain License (so kind of like Doctor...but less study more practical skills)
Many cruise ship captains were landlubbers, never having been on the water as a child or out to sea and are now in charge of $1b ships. Most went to maritime college like Cal Maritime etc and got a degree and then " put in time" working on ship , getting licenses and moving up. You gotta start somewhere and then put in the time. Does it make them good seaman or Good captains? Not necessarily. They just have the license(s) and put in the time. Most couldn't pilot a smaller boat without having automated systems if their life depended on it.
To get started. In the USA. For a deckhand/ordinary seaman/able bodied seaman. get a twic card. STCW 95 from the coast guard. Crane rigging. A ZCard. Merchant mariners credential. Minimum a twic card for deckhand.
I'm 17 and doing Alevels can you tell me what qualifications you need? Should I carry on doing Alevels I've got one year left or should I get some experience and get an apprenticeship? Thanks love the vids.
For you younger folks a bit of advice.... Get involved with a Sea Scout Ship in your area to get a feel or taste of some shipboard duties. I started when I was 14 with Sea Scouts BSA in New Jersey. Some great mentoring by fantastic people of all ages and a lot of time & love of boats brought me to my career after a stint in the Coast Guard. I’ve since retired having had a great time and a wonderful family. I’d go so far as to steal someone’s saying that “It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure!”
ImplantedMemories maybe that's what makes them happy , happy isn't a defined trait , anything and anyone can make someone happy . More money makes people happy , maybe they don't want a family or have one , so the people at work are their family , Don't make a narrow view of what happiness is, when different things make people happy. Maybe you like being poor and being a family man , but I may like making money and being single.
Solomon Stringer so If I Work on the land as an Master of engineering you think I will be poor ? In my eyes that job is for people who want to earn Money fast without good education. But I want to work to earn my living. Not to live for my work...
Great video wish I was in my 20s. The benefit of growing up with videos to research your career, in the 80s you were on your own and good luck. Hope your career hoes well. Thanks for the great vid.
Same age and feeling here... Search about growing edible mushrooms on used coffee grinds or used sugar cane. It's easy, grows faster than lettuce, doesn't require sun, you only must have some vacant room to grow it. Species Pleurotus Ostreatus (aka Oyster Mushrooms). Cardboard is used to grow the mushroom seeds into roots (called mycelium). Low investment, quick sell. Just be sure to buy a digital thermometer and humidity meter (don't trust analog ones)

hazman232 bro do we get to choose which ship I can travel? And whether salaries are good in passenger and container ships and will I get a chance to travel in these ships?
Take a bulk carrier from 50.000 tonnes. We unload vessels with 30.000 tonnes in most of the times 4 days, the the meanwhile you can may visit Rotterdam. I work at a stevedoring comoany
Daniekje Pols thanks Sir. But I m in 11 std now! I have a long journey left for my career. But sir if ur experienced then can u say the salaries at passenger, container, bulk carrier and tanker ships? And will the company allow me to choose the ship of my choice?
You mean as cadets? The wage differs from where you're from. Like in Hong Kong you can get 15kUSD per year because our government pays 70% of our wages and the companies only needed to pay 30%.
Hey man. Great video. I am a fellow canadian and I am curious how to get in to this industry. If you have any info on where to apply it would be greatly appreciated
Mariner just like Doctor or Lawyer, even when stock market crash, people still need doctor's care in the hospital, Lawyer actually got more law suits during depression than when economy is booming, because when economy is booming, people didn't want to fight each other.

Career at sea is short i guess the its the "at sea" part. Most plan to transition to marine survey, marine department, maritime pilot after their Captain license
Currently taking a class on welding. Both jobs share the same aspects but only if you choose to work at plant shutdowns and have loads of skill. I may just switch careers choices due to my need to get away from family (family of six in a rather small house) and very few friends.
I'm really having trouble with the 400k a year thing, I know 15 year pilots that are barely touching 120. Still great pay, but I can't see how 400k is in any way realistic or valid.
JeffHK understandable. Mainly in South Florida ports, port of Miami is pretty high volume. I suppose if you mean a specialist captain I can see 400k, just haven't seen anything that high before.
Heads up for all the aspiring female seafarers! As a woman working in Merchant Vessels, big adjustments on oneself is a must. It is also as good as what Jeff says however, like any other jobs there are some things that just simply sucks. Working on board a male dominated environment can be sometimes suffocating, there are instances wherein you are the only female crew onboard, you're already lucky if there were 2 or more. You've got to have a strong heart and dedication to last in this profession. Oftentimes, just because you are a woman, you are underestimated. You feel like you have to triple or exert more effort and dedication. You also have to always watch your back and be extra careful. There are some crew who are assholes and you've got to deal with some perverts. Do not tolerate verbal harrassment and as much as possible report to company early on before it gets to physical harrassment. Be well versed on guidelines about harrassment reports but most importantly make it clear and set a boundary when you mingle with the crew.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation I'm single without a wife or kids so I honestly think now would be the perfect time for me.. even if it was just for 3-4 years to build a good savings and then maybe transfer onto land to be able to start a family.. I'm really considering this career path. I've never left the country, hell barely ever left Ohio.. and getting paid even if it was 100k to travel the world, and get 3 months off for vacation a year? that sounds like a dream

Edijs well said my friend👌 and thanks to this video helped motivate me to carry on with my plans for welding schools🖒
I'm Danish, and I pay 60% tax 😶

Mike T Easy for you to say hahaha do you live in a socialist country?
60%??? 60???? Da fak is up with that?
Yeah I hate public school healthcare and all that too XD. I wonder why Denmark was rated the happiest country several times tho. Hi from Spain 🖖
Could you make a video on how to get some of these jobs?

If your from New England mass maritime is a great school

I would like to know the name of the "job" in portuguese so i could find it on google. Is Maritime the official name?
You should look up tax percentages in the Netherlands. You'll instantly faint.

In the 40's and 50's USA's top tax bracket was around 90%. It topped out at 94% in 1944.
Charles Thomson yeah good thing u guys have trump lol tired of winning yet?
lol this is nothing compared to greece. in its first year, a company has to pay 110% of its revenue to the government. thats right. you have to GIVE MORE MONEY TO THE GOVERNMENT THAN YOU MAKE!
michael papadopoulos yeah but greece kinda went bankrupt so...
Maritime? More like merry time amiright

Retired US Navy, enjoy your vlog! Many of your thoughts and experiences remind me of how similar life on board a civilian cargo ship is to being on board a military vessel once you are underway. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
Can you do a video breaking down different jobs that are available in the Maritime industry?
Thatd be dope. I was put on to this by a someone but idk what to even start lookin into
Inspectors with Irata
@russiangangland that's why there is a lot of booze, in certain ports hookers, I know 5 captains who average 3.7 wives each. I did the math, 3.7
I hear you
Hey man just gotta ask,
Do you need a masters degree to become a senior in maritime engineering?
im very interested if you make a video about deck department vs engine department XD
Deck, i could never handle the noise and greasy oil everywhere. Rather sip my coffee and day dream looking out windows LOL
JeffHK well that is true but sad cause im an engine cadet myself
But i admire engineers more than any deck position. Because it takes tremendous amount of skill and knowledge to do the job right.
No deck vs engine room on RUclips please. Hahaha
Stivan Medicov Not on ocean-going ships. But you can try oil rigs or offshore ships. They have medics and fire safety officers onboard.
After 18y in the industry. So far I've worked in Cruise Ships, RoRo-Pax, Research and Commercial/Private Yachts.
Though my needs have changed I feel Maritime is still a great sector to be in.
Good to see you promoting it!
How do I get to work in private yatch
Currently I'm in school and I don't know the steps to take thereafter
@@mourinenelima to get in depends on what you are interested in. If you want to go to sea, then there are 4 paths: Deck, Engineering, Hospitality side and Catering.
If it’s yachting you want to get into, there are plenty of ways in. Simply look up yacht recruitment. If it the hospitality side, best you develop some skills shore side first. If it’s Deck or Engineering, look for a Cadetship.
As a soldier of 7.5 years in the army this will be my career choice after.
Thank you for your service
Sheesh bud I’m hype to get out and I’ve only been in for 3.5 lmao. That dd214 is calling my name

Etsing soon. Been thinking this carrer field too!
never even thought about this as a career choice... its not promoted in the inner city like military nursing and truck driving for ex. very interesting.
You got it. It's brilliant
In the inner city of Toledo, Ohio (my hometown), we have a Maritime Academy which has been in operation for years now.
Which is good. Minimal competition. Only findable for those who look.
don't want "inner city" no way
Black people cant swim they have dense bones
As former sailor in the U.S. Navy, I commend you a lot for this videos. I always wondered what life is like a merchant (not from just those documentaries on tv). In a lot of ways the lifestyle on board are similarwith having a chain of command, separation of duty, inspections ect, ect, ect. In light of recent incidents, I really enjoyed my time at sea. No better feeling than standing on foscle and watching all type of vessels sail by. Oh and the rough seas haha.
Fair winds and following seas man
This, as a career is rewarding. I learned loving my job even more as a seafarer when i met my wife and started building our family.
Well said! Agree with everything
Makingblah71 ,
i have had several fellow workers who worked in the merchant marine..none of the made more than $100K even after 14 years. Ship Captains make around $150k a year so where are you getting $400k a year?
The maritime pilots can make the 400k not the captains
@@mynameis______392 They are a rare breed and if you want to become one of those 400K ones, you need to be family or a really close friend. It's all shielded off... No one gets a job from the outside, cruise captains is where the money's at, but then again is it a nice job??
Exactly, a VLCC or LNG Captain can expect 15-18K a month and they sail for 6 months a year. So this is pure bullshit to tell to people 400K a year. Pilot salary even at Ras Tanurah Oil Port is really less than 400k a year....
Because this video is clickbait
My friend makes 1,000 a day on tugboat as a chief engineer 8 on 8 off. New York to Philadelphia hauling oil
How do I get into this job?
Nice opinions, but I prefer the air than the sea.
Yup getting into clouds seems better than sailing over 5m of waves 😂
Horst Wessel I prefer the ground lmao.
Horst Wessel nah i like my feet on the ground
I just like to explore our beautiful habitat weather it be air sea or land
I prefer space
Not sure why your video was recommended to me, but I'm glad it was. Awesome stuff

Not unless you're voting out anyone from a party with "socialist" in the name.
Well said Daniel! same thing happening in Hong Kong its quite depressing.
I work 14 hours a day for 7 months . Save me
Work culture differs from country to country, as well as from industry to industry... sometimes you have to choose between getting paid to work like a slave or don't work at all...
That kind of rudeness is totally uncalled for. I hope your high pressure job is not driving you mad. Have a healthy happy life ahead.
Blah Blob chill out you're the goon lmao so angry for no reason.
Requires a special type of person to enjoy this job. Anyone considering working at sea should really think about how they will cope mentally being away from home and things you enjoy.
Just a dockhand now, doing pumpout boat logging days for my 6pak, thanks for broadening my horizons even more.
I really want to be a maritime officer and want it it for whole my life (now 17) but i am scared that ai and robots do the jobs for me so I end up jobless can you maybe give a tip of what to do? (i really hope to be a captain someday)
Wont happened for at least another 20 years, ship owners always cheap out when building new cargo ships
Is it too late to join maritime at 33?

My uncle was working with a Maritime Company and retired in 2012 and it didn't pay well for him. He regrets it. He even went to that Maritime school in Maryland to get recertified.
Can you elaborate on this?
Cool stuff!
I used to work on seismic vessels as data aquisition specialist. I loved the connection with the oceans worldwide.
Even if it a "lonely" job, I LOVE Solitude! I'd do it in a heartbeat!!
Me too! I would have been a trucker maybe ... if I was not a T.I.
Two years after high school I looked into the Merchant Marines. The shop steward asked me to step in his office. He said, I am going to talk to you like you are my own son. “The US Merchant Marines are a thing of the past”. All those ships you see out there are mostly manned by people from other countries
I'm from VA Hampton Roads area so THATS BIG 🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢 SIU or MSC are always HIRING

Hello Cadet
You honestly have motivated me to look into this type of job , I’m actually excited ... thank you
I’m 18 and I decided that this is what I want to do as my career. I just want to thank you for giving me the insight on what I should be expecting when I leave next month, you helped me so much and I appreciate it. Thanks.
So how has it been?
Improving yourself is very good idea being isolated on a ship. Really makes you think that you should do that, you dont have distractors.
Eventually if you really really prefer passive rest, you can do stuff like downloading 1Tb of series/movies (or anime, just me :3), 50+ books to read (in my case mangas), download some of old videos from YT, get the laptop with some cool older games (there's a plenty of them before the time of internet) and you are done with boredom! Or just learn stuff on computer - like Jeff :P
That's not that hard.
GL everyone

mark gonzalez there is an academy in my hometown. You go there do some paperwork and wait to be picked.
The Narrator ok so where is your home town

this really sounds like a good path for me, i’m 14 and heading into high school and this is the first time i’ve seen myself in this career. i’ve always been worried about not finding an interest when i’m out of school and being left stranded, so trust me when i say i’ve checked out a lot of majors that interest me

ya Maritime Pilots in the USA, the catch is it takes about 7~8 years to get a Captain License (so kind of like Doctor...but less study more practical skills)
JeffHK then it takes another 10-12 years, pay bonds, before you become a full Pilot.
You have to know people for most ports, though. Unless you're really, really good
Most American ports, or so I hear
JeffHK More practical skills? Ummm I rather be able to save lives than dock a boat. But it seems like a neat career.
I just entered a Maritime School Program...This video was very informative.Thank You!!
How long does it take someone with no experience to get into maritime?
DarkSideSixOfficial 10 years
DarkSideSixOfficial just spend 5 years in a maritime college.
Thanks for the replies, I'll look into it.
Yea if you dont want a family, or friends, or a hobby, or anything outside of work that makes you happy
kj22697 please keep spreading this narrow mindset. That way the competition for this awesome career stays low :)
Kalsiddon but it's true
All you have on the sea is your crew and the Family work. Not space for Family etc
ImplantedMemories That's the point, YOU want to do that, other people might not. For some people just working is enough to give them purpose.

Career at sea is short i guess the its the "at sea" part. Most plan to transition to marine survey, marine department, maritime pilot after their Captain license
JeffHK why is it short at sea?
JeffHK some say that we acquire respiratory disorders? Is it true
I'm waiting for No. 11 "Girls" 😂😂 LOLjust kidding. I really like all your videos. I want to be a competent officer like you someday. Safe sailing Sir.
😂😂😉😉😉😉
woman in Marine?
woman in Marine?
woman in Marine? ow em
Currently taking a class on welding. Both jobs share the same aspects but only if you choose to work at plant shutdowns and have loads of skill. I may just switch careers choices due to my need to get away from family (family of six in a rather small house) and very few friends.
My fiancé’s has a bachelor degree in electric engineering, and now he’s also studying to become ship captain.
I'm really having trouble with the 400k a year thing, I know 15 year pilots that are barely touching 120. Still great pay, but I can't see how 400k is in any way realistic or valid.
+Conor Court which port are they from? busy ports like New York or jacksonville earn more than that, while smaller ports wont
JeffHK understandable. Mainly in South Florida ports, port of Miami is pretty high volume. I suppose if you mean a specialist captain I can see 400k, just haven't seen anything that high before.
Just passed my UK class 2 orals yesterday. It's an amazing career with great prospects..great video as always.
I start training November 17th! Thank you
Lol found the feminist
I did military and regularly tell my 17 year old son, I would love for him to take a career like what you've been talking about.
I’m currently car mechanic in the U.S. and I’m looking for an adventure like this. Any advice for getting into this?
This video really makes me consider maritime as a career, but I just couldn't be away from my wife for 6 months
Isaiah Jones lol ok
Isaiah Jones go for it dude!
Isaiah Jones the money goes a lot further too when you aren’t paying bills.
eddie rodriguez What?
I'm from the Philippines! I'll become a seaman someday!!! 🇵🇭
Great video. Did you study at Uni at all ? ie what degree. My son of 11 wants to be a ships captain to buy a Ferrari. Maybe he is on the right path afterall.
Gr8, compilation. Feel like all direct from heart... I took a some time to completely understand ur thoughts in dis video... Looks like u r too young to talk abt life, but agreed, whatever u said is correct.

Alex Villalobos best thing is when your on you dont spend. when your off, if you just spend normal you save quite a buck. so in terms you get more money then they actually give you :)
