Yes if you think about it, there would be a lot of Hoops that you would have to jump through to get your Merchant Marine credentials. It must pay very well but then again I would think that it would have to depend upon the skill-set that you use to complete your assigned job on board ship. When you're applying for a job or position at a shipping company is there a written test and an interview that you have to go through? I was wondering that when you were going through all the forms that you have to fill out. Great video! Glad you're back!

The Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) is a credential issued by the United States Coast Guard in accordance with guidelines of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to United States seafarers in order to show evidence of a mariner's qualifications.
It is the standard documentation required for all crew members of U.S. ships for all vessels required to operate with a licensed Master or Operator, regardless of size. The MMC replaced the Merchant Mariner's Document, merchant mariner license, Certificate of Registry, and STCW Certificate.

I just reviewed the CG-719k which is the coast guard medical form for merchant mariners. Section 3a asks if you ever had or received treatment for the following and they go on to list a bunch of things. There are a few mental health items listed such as suicide attempts. Anxiety etc. If you answer yes to any of them. You have to get a doctor to write a letter explaining the condition and a recommendation if you can serve as a mariner or not. If it is a disqualifying condition you will have to apply for a waiver. With that said I have personally served with people that have epilepsie, diabetes, hard of hearing, near blindness caused by aforementioned diabetes and one certain master with one eye. I had one master that suffered a back injury, he couldnt walk, his wife helped him get on the boat, and he stayed in the wheelhouse eating sardines and shitting in a bucket for his hitch. Someone dropped a dime to the uscg, and they showed up to investigate. They told him to see a doctor and let the boat sail. The owner let him go eventually because he was afraid ofbthe liability.
