    What a marvelous video. I want you to know that you are in my sitting room every other evening for 30 to 45 minutes helping me learn to sing the Ave Maria. I am determined to get it to the point where I can make a recording for my brother and his wife who live 3,000 miles away. It is their favorite song favorite and I would like to have it ready for Christmas but it may take longer than that. I feel as if you're right here in the room with me and I'd like to thank you for all the help

    Wow, that was a fantastic and detailed explanation of Ave Maria, and you sang it so beautifully. Your expression and meaning of the text is an inspiration to me to learn this song. I started performing in musical theatre at 50 and after many years I am finally taking lessons, your tuition is greatly appreciated and will bolster my learning. So from 200 years ago with Austrian Schubert via an English poem about someone in Scotland, written in German and then Latin, presented by you in New Zealand to me in England, quite a trail. Hi Lois. It was quite by chance I saw this video come up on youtube just as I was getting into adding Ave Maria into my performance repertoire. I have to say a big thankyou to you for the time and effort you put into dissecting every aspect of singing this song with good diction and breath control. I will never be a singer as gifted as Mario Lanza (whose highly emotive performance of Ave Maria is on youtube for posterity), but thanks to you, I can now put an even better effort into singing what are very simple verses of lyrics, but which need very careful mental consideration as to how to project the appropriate emotive impact into performing this song so that it moves the mind and soul of those listening to it as one surely intends. In my performance, I also play one whole verse through on the Harmonica between each sung verse. I find that the melancholy sound of the Harmonica really adds to the emotive impact it has upon my audiences. Have a great day !

    • @singingtips1
      @singingtips1  4 дня назад

      Hi. I love the idea of playing a verse on the harmonica - it's an instrument I associate with homesickness and nostalgia....highly appropriate for setting the right mood for the evocative lyrics of the song. Thank you for sharing. 😁🎶

    Thank you so much for posting this. I can't afford singing lessons and I want to get this right. I will be singing this next month so I've some time to practice. This was my late mother's favorite song and I never learned it until very recently. It took me some time to memorize the words then I found out I got it wrong and had to learn all over and it's videos like this one that are helping me do it right.

    • @singingtips1
      @singingtips1  8 месяцев назад +1

      I'm so glad you're tackling this, especially as it was your mother's favourite. Learning music is always an ongoing process. There are at least 2 sets of lyrics that I know of, so that can cause some confusion sometimes. Let me know how you're going with it!

    • @nunyabiznez6381
      @nunyabiznez6381 8 месяцев назад

      @@singingtips1 2? I've discovered dozens of versions. Every video that includes lyrics has a slightly different set of lyrics. Then there are the variations that aren't even the prayer but are either German or Celtic in nature and some people just make up their own words. I found the Latin prayer it is from on Wikipedia where you can hear a nice recording of the ecclesiastical pronunciations of the words. Not being a native speaker of Latin I was unsure of diction. Now I discover that "church Latin" is different from "classical Latin" and I had not known there was a difference and thought I ought to go with classical but the prayer wasn't even put together until around the 15th century long after classical Latin evolved into church Latin so I'm going with the ecclesiastical pronunciation. But a caveat, watch out for Google Translate. I was studying the various translations into English and found that Google Translate is completely unreliable for this. For example, if you type in "Bendicta tu in mulieribus" your English result will be "you." That's it, just the word "you." So I sent in feed back and hopefully they correct it because we both know that is not a correct translation and I don't even speak Latin and I know it. It's funny where research into the minutia of a topic will take you.

    • @singingtips1
      @singingtips1  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for watching, and for your feedback. I really appreciate it. Glottal stops aren't harmful for most people, but when they are habitual (rather than for a chosen effect) they can be problematic. Very young singers who mimic their favourite pop singers often find it really hard to learn how to do a smooth vowel onset, and have problems regulating their airflow to make a good legato line. I advise caution, I guess!!😊

      @singingtips8613 Hi, no problem, it was and is an enjoyable experience to watch. Thanks for saying glottal stops aren't bad for most people. Oh yeah, I could see habitual vs. for an effect
      I definitely can admire knowing how to do a smooth vowel onset. And regulating airflow. Thanks again for your kind and informative response.

    Enjoyed the video greatly. Wish I could hit the counter tenor notes as I dislike having to move things. Still, maybe one day eh ? Thanks.

      Hi! Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, finding the "right" key can be tricky. Most of the songs I choose for the channel are available in a variety of keys, and RUclips has an incredible number of amazing pianists providing excellent backing tracks too. Thanks for singing with me.

    I can do everything well except breathing on this song. Do you have any tips on improving breathing? I am an alto/mezzo and would like to avoid lowering the key completely out of my head voice just to have enough breath.

    • @singingtips1
      @singingtips1  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi. Breathing is a lifelong study, right? I suggest slowing down the way to breathe in between phrases. For example, after the first phrase, you have a crotchet rest, so try breathing in steadily for that whole crotchet. The next rest is a quaver, so use the whole quaver rest to take the air in steadily for the next phrase.....and so on. Do remember to check in with your pelvic floor muscles - if you're gripping them by the end of a phrase, you need to release them before you can successfully take in the next breath. I hope this helps. 😀

      Thank you for your kind words. My Mother-in-law Betty loved Ave Maria and asked me to sing it at her husband (my Father-in-law’s) funeral 5 yrs ago. I wish I had your expertise back then. I am grateful I now know where to go for helpful information and singing tips.
      Betty’s funeral was such a beautiful and moving tribute to a wonderful woman. It was an honor to be able to sing for her. I received so many compliments and comments about how touched people were by my performance that I felt truly blessed.

    There is another video on RUclips teaching this song. That video has the words (of the lyrics) in slow motion as they are sung. It’s much better to practise singing Ave Maria with that video.
    I suggest you look at that video & follow the format

    Hello and thank you for this video which I have just come across as i got a notion today to learn to sing this song as its my mother's favourite. Ive never really sung before. I find it just slightly high (at the very top fructus ventris) and I can almost reach (straining a little, I just about hit the highest note). Will practice make this note easier to access or will I just strain my voice? Thanks so much for your advice - I will now visit your othet videos. 😊

    • @singingtips1
      @singingtips1  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, and welcome! Getting a bit anxious about high notes is really common, so don't give up. If you can reach those notes to a rolled "rrr" (tongue trill) or a "vvv" or an open- mouthed hum, that would suggest that you have these notes in your range, and that you just need to do a bit of relaxed practice. Try the whole phrase to an "ah", keeping your mouth really wide open (like you're at the dentist 😲)and your throat relaxed. I've made a video about high notes.....I hope you discovered it? I'll write an article about it too (www.singinglessons.online/blog) too over the next couple of days. Let me know how you get on. 😀🎶
