- Calli's latest song いじめっ子Bully (lit: Bully Bully) really dives into the parasocial relationships streamers and VTubers often find themselves in. Where they can only really survive off the well wishes and support of their fans. It's a hard life man, and this is probably one of my heavier reactions. BEAR WITH ME.

Calli actually broke all her songs down. Funnily enough apparently it has to do with her hating herself so much that she thinks she's hurting the people around her. It has to do with Kiara, her fans, and everyone else. But she knows shes not really hurting them, but she doesnt like herself so much that she feels like shes doing something terrible every negetive thing she says. Shes slowly starting to gain more self love but it's hard for her and it's hard for her to see why people like her even though she tries so hard.

I was on the Takamori train, but really both the wording of the song and the context you gave has definitely swayed me away from that theory. Seeing as the other songs in the EP say a lot of her as a streamer, fans and haters it makes a lot of sense this is also about that relationship with the viewers. Overall I absolutely love your reactions/analysis as they are some of the most in-depth looks into Mori's work. I'm looking forward to her lyric dive but I'll definitely be thinking about all you said.
It's got just enough suggestions about being about Takamori but reading the lines in the context of the rest of the album, it's very much about Calli and her own thoughts about her work and the relationship with the following.

i like how its not exclusively streaming, but she relates it to every positive relationship. the fans she has, kiara, her other friends. im glad she's self aware enough to know that she isnt hurting anyone

I originally saw it along the same lines but as a paradox of being a great streamer while balancing the feelings of taking people's dosh for something that she herself feels like she doesn't quite deserve? (from her reaction to the Canadian super chat storm)
The hungry wolf I thought referred to the ambitions of being a good streamer, and how essentially her push to be the best would naturally result in her fans doing this and 'killing themselves' to support her. Like, what do you do when your ambitious goals directly take the life from the people around you.
I'm honestly not sure how one would really work themselves out of that moral quandary, honestly.

The idea that shes always in character and she only shows parts of her true self in her songs kinda makes me think we cant entirely trust her own lyric dive stream
Soooo. She mentioned something about pushing to have more freedom in her music. So she's probably more susceptible to bonking from the stream end.

Thanks a lot for your reaction! Your interpretation of the lyrics was very interesting, and I can definitely see how the parasocial relationship angle would play out in some of the lines.
That said, personally my view is that the song is general enough to apply to a lot of relationships involving a manipulator and a person being manipulated, including parasocial ones, and I feel that Calli must have at least had the whole Takamori idea of Phoenix-Death in mind and built her song about it.
The most interesting thing about the song to me is that it narrows the subject down into a single female from the start. If it was strictly from a Deadbeats-Calli perspective this move wouldn't make sense since it highlights specifically a relationship among females, which I think would exclude a huge chunk of the Deadbeats as the subject. Furthermore Calli has done other songs directed towards Deadbeats straightforwardly yet over here she relies on a narrative.
"Soul of ashes" is the phrase most people seem to point to for the Takamori connection but to me the idea that she had an immortal being in mind is the first four lines:
Loving you, killing you, isn’t it thrilling? You’ve
Said enough from those guts you’ve been spilling through
Crying and begging, a lovely sound
I tear at your soul, but ya still stick around.
I think the subtitled video you chose has some flaws to it because the website I'm referencing says 'guts', and the common expression is definitely 'guts spilling'. It's a bit hard to hear Calli's pronounciation though so she could have been using wordplay, but I hear 'guts' more than 'goods'.
Either way, what we know so far is that the main subject is a female friend/lover and the above lines invoke a lot of immortality imagery of killing yet returning ("I tear at your soul, but ya still stick around"). This is at least the main evidence to me that she had a lot of Takamori in mind when writing this song. The rest of the song keeps it ambiguous but there's also the presence of fire and wolf imagery which is extremely congruous with phoenix (a weak bird as wolf's prey)
Incidentally, the Baraba line is listed in the lyrics I'm referencing as ホントの薔薇は自分の刺に (Honto no Bara wa...) which I think makes more sense given the rose & thorns motif & the grammar. It's probably just Calli's pronounciation making it sound off.
So overall, I think that the song is about a toxic manipulative relationship and the lyrics are general and subtle enough to be applied to all relationships in that vein, including a parasocial fan-creator one, but the source of the narrative is likely Takamori or, at the very least, the idea of a relationship between Phoenix-Death. Like Eminem's Love The Way You Lie, it could be based on a personal experience, but Calli as an artist is good enough to make it universal. (Since Kiara also can be seen as Calli's No.1 fan, the idea of parasociality and a narrative stemming from Takamori can also overlap)
thing is, in taking with the theme of the EP which has been thus far about her relationship with her viewers, her own content, and her haters, it being a 'general song' at the end doesn't really fly with me. even the title of 'Your Mori' in a manner is definitely used in a self-reflective manner.
i think this definitely can have the interpretation of being adaptable for conversing about toxic relationships in general. but I kinda go with an 'occam's razor' feeling. she talks what she knows, and i'm pretty certain the aka supers floating around definitely has some strong feelings behind it
@@dicequeenDi Yeah I think what's good about the song is that it can be a standalone thing about toxic manipulation but also work within the context of the album as about streaming, and even Takamori. So the net it casts is quite wide.
Although Calli is streaming about the lyrics now so I guess we will find out soon enough what she was thinking about.
There is one line that I keep thinking about: "I'll use and abuse you and never feel bad, until suddenly - finally - you take my hand". Is she saying she doesn't feel bad about the abuse until we reach out a friendly hand to her? Or perhaps she is referring back to herself in-character as Death and "take my hand" means someone throws their life away (literally or figuratively)?
i was personally seeing this as 'i won't feel bad about this for now but if you DO over over the line... well of course i'd feel bad.' i think she does worry that people are hurting themselves over her content but as an entertainer you HAVE to move forward without getting caught up in it.

I'm a dead beat and I surely like it rough, because I'm still answering now. I love the slower, then faster and ultra-fast flow of the lyrics and ... I like the references in this song.
The path she's treading on may be likened to a stoney one.
I really disagree with Takamori being any part of this tbh, and yeah I can see her fans, viewers much more easily. I thought about the fan / creator perspective in relation to SCs too, and yeah the imagery of bullying fits.
Tom Scott actually made a nice presentation "there is no algorithm for truth" at the royal institute on YT, and talks about the async nature of communication between streamers and viewers too. And about authoritative voices and why we collectively even care about those voices.
Those aren't easy topics, and I'm glad that you and Calli still continue.

@@dicequeenDi the part I'm referring too starts at 33:49. I've even shared it with a few friends in a Discord and got interesting reactions so far. Only that part is relevant to the parasocial aspects, but it kinda holds true for the masses (not necessarily hardcore fans)
There's takamori imagery there, I'd say, but no I don't think it's what the songs about. I'm sure it's about being a streamer and the relationship with the viewers. The imagery is just that though I think; there for flavor. Great breakdown!

Yeahhhhhhh. I think one of the best ways to view it is that "Your Mori" is an album of a series of perceptions in relationship to her.
So... on your comment about Calli not breaking character, I think a big part of that is just that she's sort of... not in-character? Or rather she's bending the character she's playing to hedge closer to her own personal identity.
Like, even in her regular streams, she refers to IRL events about her life but does so through metaphor. "Scythe swinging lessons", being a metaphor for what her full time job was before doing Hololive full time, etc etc. Heck, there are a bunch of slip ups she does when IRL comes crashing into her streams and her responses 100% match what I've done during ordinary phone calls. ("I had to put on pants" being a stock joke used for "I needed to make myself presentable")
Is she playing up certain aspects of her personality to portray the character? Almost certainly, as any consummate entertainer would (especially considering how long she's been making content before hololive, on and offline), but I'd bet good money the gap between her offline personality and what's presented in stream/song is fairly slim compared to, say, Korone.
Edit: or, more aptly, people who experience a sufficiently high level of self hatred tend to set up default public facing facades to avoid hurting people they care about, and the facade she's putting up on stream is not that much different from the one she puts up in every day life.
thing is that defense mechanism of filtering everything through reaping is something she has not let down on compared to every other member who has let it drop even once. and i think that's particularly telling
I'm like 2 months late here, but I think the reason people make the Takamori connection is that that relationship is played up as being the same thing lore wise. A phoenix and a reaper in a cycle where one gives their love and affection to the other, who is basically there to kill them and restart the cycle.
Like a streamer and their viewers, specifically the ones less grounded in the reality of the situation who send superchats/donations professing their love think there's a chance of anything beyond a no. But they just keep coming back and trying.
A quick edit: Now I wonder if that's intentional on Mori and Kiara's part.
This song can have so many meanings that calling can't possibly imagine.
I think the "If I'm the world to you" line can mean a couple things. What you said, of course, but also just if she means that much to you, you never stood a chance in realizing the "abuse".

i love these breakdowns especially from a vtuber point of view because you can give some insight on things i never even considered it also sheds some light on how she acted when she 1st opened supers and even now to a lesser degree yeah the realization that streaming is actually viable was there but how she openly showed the guilt in not only accepting peoples money but deserving it as well

Yeah I enjoy takamori but I think some people focus on it to much. But that’s always the danger of shipping some people get to attached.

I think alot think about Takamori because the song involves Ashes at the beginning, but like you said that a really thin relation to draw and even Kiara herself pointed out that it doesnt make sense because it would paint Calli as threating Kiara badly, which doesnt really hold up, at least not earnestly. Even at her most tsundere in-character, Calli mostly just acts annoyed towards Kiara, never abusive.
Also, on the by, I really enjoy your break-downs. You clearly put alot of thought into this and I really enjoy the way you draw conclusions out of the texts that go deeper than just surface level. Even if Callis break-down contradicts what you said here - I actually havent watched it yet - I still think theres great things and thoughts to be taken away from this, which I think is the hallmark of a great analysis.
So, uh...Keep the good stuff up, I guess!
Calli also heavily supports death of the author (lmao) so really whatever you take away from a body of work is just as important as the intentions behind it.

Also I totally just went with the Takamori stuff and didnt really think much of it ( like the first couple of lines that people said were for it. when I got to that part that you said couldn’t possibly be Takamori, I started to question it) so when you go off with these big brain ideas, my small bean just explodes

I definitely agree that this isn’t about Takamori (other than maybe some literal fire references). I do feel like you’re taking it a bit too far though lol... there’s telling the truth (e.g. some fans are too obsessive and need to realize the way they act is not healthy) and then there’s putting most everyone that donates to Calli or buys her/Hololive’s merch under the same umbrella. Even the way you phrase it makes Calli seem so sinister while giving this profound message. I don’t see how that’s what Calli meant while writing this song. Maybe parts of what you said make sense, but it’s kinda like what you said about Calli not liking how the fans reacted to her ‘off with their heads’ song. She did not make this song to specifically blast the v-tuber fanbase or her own fans. It’s just a general song about a deep topic.
For example 11:15 that’s you reading into what she means. She didn’t actually say it about the certain topic that you brought up for your talking point. Remember this is still your opinion and not the complete reality of how Cali feels.

It’s still an opinion, and you should at least accept that there’s a chance you could be wrong.
