The Honda Civic Hybrid Is Back For 2025 With 200 HP AND 50 MPG!?

  • When Honda said they were bringing back the Civic hybrid, many of us expected a reworked version of the Insight's 1.5L 2-motor hybrid, or just the same hybrid as the Civic e:HEV from Europe and Japan, but instead they cranked the dial all the way up to 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft to make this the most powerful non Type R Civic ever**. (Previous gen Civic Si engines made a hair more HP, but way less torque. The current Si is 200 HP and 192 lb-ft.) We don't have final MPG numbers yet, but we're told that the combined MPG should be around 50 with city or highway numbers being above that lofty number.
    2025 also brings an updated infotainment system to the top trims and a new bumper to all the Civics... But still no air vents. |Sad trombone|

    I was going to buy a new Corolla hybrid sedan but now I'm definitely going to wait a month and buy the 2025 Civic Hybrid! 200 HP and 50 MPG is great! Especially since the Civic has more passenger space and more cargo room than the Corolla. Civic wins!

    This is probably going to be the only car I recommend to people who don't need more performance or a third row. The accord is a bit too big, the prius has a weird interior and I don't know how the Camry will be. But this car has already proven itself in Europe. All hybrid cars should be making around 200hp. There's now no reason for them not to.

    • @jconli1
      @jconli1 4 месяца назад +5

      Bit of a stretch to suggest Honda doesn't know what they're doing. My assumption is there were still parts logistics/parts availability aftershocks at the beginning of this platform, so the initial hybrid focus was on the European and UK markets where they 1) have more stringent emissions/electrification requirements and 2) sell the Civic at a higher price point. Devote the resources you do have to the places that regulations and profitability matter most. Honda still sold a ton of gas-only Civics in North America in the meantime.
      Unfortunately in the delay, they lost me as a potential customer, but it probably doesn't matter, last I talked to a dealer waiting line is already very long. I do think it's funny that Alex keeps saying we don't know exact performance/consumption figures, etc... can't imagine there would be significant engineering changes, so that's all been comprehensively tested elsewhere.

      It's because our idiotic emissions and safety regulations are disproportionately strict for smaller cars versus trucks and SUVs. Car companies make more money in the US selling us SUVs and trucks we don't need, and thus, small cars get fewer trim levels versus their bigger, taller siblings.
      Plus our fuel prices tend to be lower than the rest of the world, so the added cost of the hybrid usually turns most US buyers away. However, that is quickly changing and car companies know this.

    A little of topic, the Insight (from 2019) can be considered as a hybrid version of the Civic. I was a bit disappointed that Honda didn't do an aerodynamic exterior styling like the 1st gen Insight since it looked similar to the Civic (I'm not saying the Civic looked bad). Even the Clarity should have been called the Insight (and should offer a regular hybrid powertrain along with the plug-in). I loved how the 1st gen Insight looked, so I'm not ruling out an Insight with a strange, yet futuristic aerodynamic design with potentially an EV powertrain, considering the move toward electrification of the industry.
    As for this Civic hybrid, it definitely will appeal to many people and can rival against the Corolla Hybrid and Prius. Overall, Honda did a good job on adding a new hybrid to their lineup.

    Honda hybrid buyers should beware. My 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid was part of a class action lawsuit.
    There are two types of EV battery warranties, failure warranties and capacity warranties. Most, if not all, manufacturers offer a failure warranty. (e.g., 8 years/100,000 miles) This is applicable if the battery fails completely. Some, but definitely not all, manufacturers offer an explicit battery capacity warranty (e.g., minimum of 65% capacity available for 8 years/100,000 miles). If you buy a vehicle that does not have a capacity warranty and the capacity drops by 80%, what is your EV battery worth? My 2007 Civic Hybrid battery dropped 84% in 5 years. My 2017 Leaf dropped 13% in 18 months.

    The way Honda is handling certain things diminishes my interest in what I think has been their most compelling vehicle line in a long time. No rear air vents still? I was complaining about that as a kid in an 01 XJ! Upgraded display? Only on top trim. Want the Hybrid? Again, only select trims. To top it all off *still* no Passport or Ridgeline on the new Pilot platform, how long will that take? Another entire generation?
