  • I want my $2,000 back! Yes, the beach is good, the food is great & the water is gorgeous, but...
    Secrets Aura is the number one best resort hotel in Cozumel, Mexico, both in popularity and luxury. How? The only way Secrets Aura is the best resort in Cozumel is if it was the only hotel on the island of Cozumel, Mexico. I just stayed at this highly touted Secrets Resort for three nights during prime-time peak season, and, well, my trip did not go as expected. I was looking forward to a luxurious and relaxing weekend at one of the most beautiful and tranquil places in the Caribbean - but my experience was something out of the Twilight Zone.
    In this video, I take you along with me for my entire 72 hour stay at supposedly one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, and one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. Every aspect of my experience is documented in stunning 4k Pro Res video, and along the way I show you all of the property, including the most exclusive areas such as my Oceanfront Suite as well as the Preferred Club Beach and Preferred Club Pool. This video will uniquely showcase one of the most beautiful all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and provide brutally authentic insights from a professional traveler that has stayed at over 60 all-inclusive resorts in less than two years.

    No the group in the pool was not on a day pass. They were all guest there and paid just like everyone else. Sounds like you are all a bunch of uptight snobs. They were there celebrating a marriage and having fun. I suggest you either blur out the people in the pool or take this video down. It's one thing to show the beach and your room and restaurants but you don't video others and post it for everyone to see without permission. They all had fun but when you start slamming them then thats where there's a problem. We will be in contact with the resort on this.

      Same market factors as anywhere, cheap air travel to these destinations has increased demand tremendously causing the increase in hotel prices

    • @Coolist
      @Coolist  3 месяца назад +5

      Well, it's a few things.
      1) Rampant REAL inflation has stratospherically raised hotel rates
      2) Peak Tourist Season for the Caribbean can 2x or 3x hotel rates compared to off-season
      3) I also think we are at the peak of this economic cycle and businesses are/were able to test max price levels to consumers

    Thank you for articulating exactly how our stays were there. We did go back but only because they had to offer us 3 free nights as recovery for how bad our first visit was. We waited almost a year to go back so they'd have time to improve. Sadly, they did not but we arrived with low expectations & made the best of it. We've been to several Secrets as UVC members & are shocked this resort is allowed to be in that group of properties. We arrived expecting the Secrets brand service & quality. You nailed it exactly regarding the NASCAR crowd-on both of our visits it was like that every night. We spent a lot of time off resort both visits because they made us uncomfortable-luckily there's a lot to see & do on the island with a rental vehicle.
    Thank you for your honesty in your reviews-you helped us decide on our next resort, Secrets Royal Beach! Would love to hear your take on their properties in Huatulco if possible.

    James! Sadly you definitely got gypped on this property. I’d be cranky too ! Seems more geared for old, cranky folks like me 😂. Silver lining def the food, (and not that silver back at the pool ) of which your photos always look amazing. For $700 a night, you shouldn’t have to review the coffee shop more than once. My 30-something-self would’ve not been happy. The pools, though, i have to say WERE pretty fun - again for the older crowd. No gym. No nightlife. No buffet. Chilly staff. Definitely steered a lot of travelers out of harms way. Oh and the water & beach my favorite part. All the best to you! 🎉onward! PS THE INTRO MUSIC WAS 🔥

  • @beachbumsailordude
    @beachbumsailordude 3 месяца назад +2

    James, so many thoughts come to mind after watching this. 1. "Well I won't be going there then". 2. "Cool is having a pretty crappy time in Cozumel" 3. "Looking at that preferred pool situation I didn't realize this place is at baboon level". 4. "With all the great All Inclusives I can go to I wouldn't go here". 5. "Well I guess I'll be going back to the Iberostar Grand". And then the video ends and another one starts playing automatically. Which one was it? Your visit to the Iberostar in Cancun, LOL! Every vacation is a big "?" as far as what's going to happen. I'd say almost 1/2 of all the vacations I've ever been on go sideways at some point for some reason. The ability to turn garbage into gold is the secret but sometimes that isn't even possible. You gotta' just try your best and you do. I hope there are some points in these travels that you take a week or so and stay at one of the nicer place and just enjoy it w/o all the videos. You owe yourself that much. Looking forward to the next one.

    • @beachbumsailordude
      @beachbumsailordude 3 месяца назад +3

      One more thought: Things like the do not disturb sign and the a/c unit should be taken care of w/o any input from you. It's what I call the "Magic Farriers" element. You have multiple people coming into your room every day to clean it and stock the fridge. They should be reporting it to maintenance and getting it done w/o any prompting from you. One of the housekeepers should have noticed the home made DND sign and just replace it right on your door w/o any prompting from you. That's the kind of service I expect at these places.

The reason why its a Saturday to Saturday crowd is its pretty popular with Canadian tourists and the only time direct flights are offered to Cozumel is on the weekend typically Saturdays.

We immediately upgraded to a Preferred Club room which was much better, but still older. And the crowd was funny, it went from a retirement home to Spring Break in a matter of days due to the cruiseship crowd 😂

  • @jeffbean4925

    I totally, totally agree! Visited there several years ago (pre covid) for a very special anniversary. Loud crowds, an extraordinary amount of profanity, and couples copulating in the pools - those are my memories - and that is not good. We too were preferred club and found the staff in the preferred areas cold as stated. And yes, took us a long time to get into our room.
    A very fair assessment of the beach and water. We, however, did like the small restaurant shared with a neighboring property because of the views and staff. However, the selection offered was limited for the cost of the resort. We too, were very disappointed.

I usually do a made to order breakfast in the buffet, however. The omelet station is great, but the rest of the buffet is pretty meh. (Like all buffets are to me...). Agree 100% about the room service and Oceana restaurant. Good report, thank you!

    This resort has the potential to be amazing, but it was awful. We experienced so many negative things during our week stay. The beach and ocean are the highlights for sure. We are divers and snorklers and loved it. It was the biggest bate and switch with traveling that we have ever experienced. I posted on trip advisor our experience. The pools were green when we arrived and several times during the week. Totally gross and unacceptable. That was just one of many issues. Thanks for being honest with your review!

    As I understand the idea of this secrets property was that for evening shows, some restaurants and gym people will visit dreams sister property.
    This secrets resort has the lowest score from all secrets properties and definitely doesn't worth the money.
    The high level secrets will be: Secrets Maroma, Secrets Akumal, Secrets Cap Cana. You can usually book such hotels in advance for $400-550 on priceline using bundles.

We were pretty disappointed last year in Puerta Vallarta I have heard others complain is it still just severe cut backs trying to make up for being closed down for 2 years will travel ever be good again. Resort Pass - Cozumel is full of cruisers who get off the ship and live their best lives on a cheap day pass excursion to the resort. They are rowdy and rude and typically Americans who believe cruising is traveling. Last year while staying in PDC I booked a snorkeling excursion unfortunately the tour was a whole family from Alabama who booked the excursion through the cruise ship. It was a nightmare.

    Enjoy watching your videos, and living vicariously through your travel experiences! So thanks!! Here's my $.02 on this one though:
    - No need to be so apologetic and hesitant to express your authentic impressions...
    - The value of your channel is that you are saving all of us from having to experience all of these places on our own ... and you are helping us find the best value and desired experience for us ... to spend our limited time and money on.
    - So please don't lean towards the "glass is half full" view of things. When things are negative, or don't live up to expectations, just tell it like it is! Your write up/summary does that clearly, but you seemed a bit hesitant in the video.
    (Actually, channels that gloss over negatives, or put a positive spin on everything, make me think they are either getting perks - or trying to get perks from these hotels/resorts.)
    Keep up the good work and info!!! All the best!

      2) I 'm generally and genuinely optimistic and good-natured, but also discerning, critical, and a realist (cynic?) - it's an interesting dynamic that can be easily misinterpreted, so I try to choose my words carefully since they are on the internet forever and my takes are impromptu.

      I say this preface over 10x in the video.
      Cozumel beaches are notoriously terrible.
      Most hotels don't even have one.
      And for the record, the beach at Secrets Aura is better than the four most popular hotels in Playa Del Carmen (Hilton, Wyndham Altra, Ocean Rivera Paradise, Paradisus).

    Be detail oriented is not a Mexican business strength. It’s that way everywhere in Mexico. The general manager obviously doesn’t review his own property , he is responsible for this and he passes these requirements to his team from food service , room maintenance , etc. 700/ day is top tier. You earn that fail

    For me the lack of amenities, open or selection of restaurants, rooms in disrepair or an ambivalent or untrained staff will always by far outweigh the crowd. Like your neighbors there is no way to control who can come to Secrets or any resort and who can't. If Secrets did have standards to have the perfect Honeymoon crowd, they wouldn't have let you in as a solo traveler with a big camera or I phone on a gimbal. I noticed a man hand raking the beach early in the morning and for me that's everything.

    • @Coolist
      @Coolist  3 месяца назад +1

      Good eye on the guy raking - I am glad they did manicure and maintain the beach, as a Secrets should. I do shoot everything in ProRes 60k though 😎

    Go to Costa Rica and stay at 2 (non all inclusive resorts):
    1.) Nayara Tented Camp (stay in Titi 15)
    2.) El Silencio Lodge and Spa
    Great food, great service, amazing people and an epic country.

    • @Coolist
      @Coolist  3 месяца назад

      I've been looking at Nayara for awhile now, especially after my bubble hotel experience :) And, btw, I don't yearn for prestige - I've spent years in elite hotels during my business career and the (occasional yet consistent) arrogance in the ether can be suffocating. I actually did a lot more sophisticated properties at the start of my channel, but they are pretty lame as far as content because there isn't much to do. I'll check out El Silencio

    I would like to know what the very old people were doing that was so far from what they should be doing at their age. If they were 30-40 year olds would you have mentioned their age too? Why was mentioning their age relevant? Laughing, joking around, singing, dancing, having fun? That is all you showed in your video. Was there more? Were they screaming and running throughout the halls playing ding dong ditch? It sounds to me that the issue is the placement of the pool near the rooms, not the fact that there were 50-60 year olds "not acting their age". There are people of all ages who love to travel, meet other couples and have a great time...which often ends up with noise.

    • @Coolist
      @Coolist  3 месяца назад

      I answered this in a comment already. You seem really insecure about your age.
      And maybe that's actually what it was, a bunch of 50 and 60-year-olds acting like highschoolers vacationing for the first time acting obnoxiously at the supposedly elite resort. Look and listen to the video and see it for yourself.

    • @Coolist
      @Coolist  3 месяца назад

      And according to a lot of people, in these comments, those people were on guest passes and not even staying at the resort. So no awareness or respect for people paying premium prices to stay in the most prestigious part of that resort. Secrets is just as much to blame.
