  • AWD TEST: Volvo Xc90 Diagonal and Offroad test on ice and snow
    We tested the new Volvo XC90 AWD! Quite impressive since once again it was icy and mixed with snow all over the place! Switch it to offroad mode and the truck will send 25% of power to each wheel. But sometimes it tends to allow some wheelspin before braking the wheels without traction.
    The car is equipped with winter tires, there is a lot of ice under the snow and the hill is quite steep! The car could have gone up the hill first shot, but the goal is to show how the AWD reacts to a slippy situation!

      Hi, great video :) I own one of these and have no chance to try this kind of severe AWD. One thing I have noticed. The squeaking noise that comes from breaks or suspension at 3:38 and 4:18. Is that something expected? I had the same on my previous brand new 2017 XC60...

      He can’t drive flooring it on snow creates too much spin and doesn’t show that at all if you use gentle response it has time to send power tor the wheel with most grip and not just spin all four wheels

      Correct. It's the point of an automatic system. Just like abs. You don't emergency break like non-abs, in fact, that will probably get you in trouble.

    This film is a fine example of how the Volvo works-around in a dynamic fashion to get-it-going! Nice Volvo! If the tires were to be a bit more narrow and less on the highway performance the Volvo would really eat-up this stuff!
    Overall, very nice work in a beautiful and capable automobile!

    This car wasn't meant to go off-road. The Haldex can't deliver the same level of performance as a lockable centre differential with a low-range gear or even a Torsen system.

      Interesting comment. I drive a 2016 VOLVO up a dirt road in the Colorado Mountains and it (the Volvo) has passed many a big 4x4 pickup truck that was stuck. Sometimes I could stop to help, other times it had to be to keep the momentum up a very long and steep hill encroachment. I know that my neighbors do not understand why (the Volvo) does so well, and I say that living in Alaska for 12-years helped, but compared to a truck, the only benefit the truck has is higher clearance, however, the VOLVO has some 8" to 9" under itself!
      Thanks, VOLVO, still building great cars.

      These are not proper winter tires, more likely M+S (all season tires). If you would put studded winter tires (Nokian Hakkapeliitta, Michelin X-Ice north etc) -> you would have smashed that small hill! I live in Finland and have 3-5 months of winter with 30-40 cm of snow, ice, slippery roads and so on: with good tire (studded or friction tires like we call in Finnish) you don't have problems.

    When driving Haldex AWD like some Audi,Volkswagen,Volvo,Saab you should press on the gas a bit, not floor it, maintain decent pressure on gas for a few seconds so that the computer can transfer power to the right wheel, what you did at first was remove your foot at the first sign of slip,or floor it, the Haldex would not work that way.

    • @aryapradhanad186
      @aryapradhanad186 7 лет назад

      Intrepid Milotic FYI, this is not haldex this is GKN AWD system. GKN system has been used by Range Rover Evoque, The all new Audi allroad and Q5. The Volvo basically has the same AWD with these 3 cars the only difference is that the Evoque has Torque vectoring or Twinster Axle as what GKN said and the Audis has a newly designed propshaft or drive shaft with torque vectoring also, other than that it's the same. The driver should have turned the traction control and ESC off and it will go as well as the Evoque

    Read the Car Question comments carefully: the car is equipped with the winter tires. But there is a lot of ice under the snow. Also they treat it "bed" on purpose to show how it reacts and yet they say it could have gone up hill first shot if they wanted.
    To perform better you can switch it to off road mode!

      The test does not show poor vehicle performance. My Jeeps would do the same thing and are real 4x4s. The front driver side tire has NO WEIGHT on it. Winter tires, dry, wet, it won't matter...no weight no traction. Anyone who has raced vehicles knows how traction is lost by shifting the weight of the vehicle.

The GC and the new xc90 are different animals, volvo is all luxury now with the ability to get you home. The Jeep is obviously better set up for offroading passed the limit of the average driver.

We get a lot of snow here and I like to get my trucks dirty, plus I can't imagine an XC90 hauling my trailer through the woods withy ATV in it to camp. So i think I have to keep one of the 4Runners if i get XC90.

    From what I've seen in this video it's not impressive especially in the diagonal test. I got a question for you. On some or most crossovers or SUVs the lock button or option that lets you use this function up to a set speed or mph what is it locking up? Is it just 50'50 split front to back left to right or all four wheels locked ?

    • @CarQuestion
      @CarQuestion  8 лет назад +1

      +rotaxrider please note that the diagonnal test is an extreme test that 0,09% might face one day in a certain situation! for the button It's usualy 50/50 front to rear power but even some systeme dont LOCK the power transfert.
      back in the old days you had a limited slip diff ( mechanical ) but today cars rely more on electronics to apply braking to the slipping wheel.
      the volvo system is not bad! a little oversteer sometime in slippery condition, but in offroad mode it will get you out, but still is not the fastest.

      +CarQuestion I guess you can say that about any AWD/4WD SYSTEM that is on a car or crossover or SUV. They should all do good on winter roads with good winter tires because most fwd cars with really good winter tires are good on winter roads but I would want a SUV or crossover to be better than a fwd when it goes off road. When I say OFF ROAD I mean a long up hill driveway in the winter or any situation more traction is needed more than fwd can offer. I know that there are some better than others and some at greater cost.

    Which trim/engine was this using? I'm very interested in buying the PHEV T8 engine version, but is the AWD the same across models? Thank you!

    That is not snow, but icy slush. A single data point test - one car on one day in one set of conditions does not prove anything. Put a Jeep GC, maybe a Ford F-150 and a FWD anything on either side of the XC90 on the same day with the same tires, and let's see if it is the conditions or the car.

      I agree. Took some time to think. Yeah the tires were not snow tires but that four wheel system seems a little lacking. Good for the soccer mom. These are a great looking and luxo ride but I wouldn't take off road. But slow system

    • @TheBronco67
      @TheBronco67 8 лет назад

      the tires were a disadvantage but I think the tester was biggest problem here. once he seen that the hill was too steep for that weight of vehicle, he should have built momentum from the bottom instead of driving 1/2 way up and either stopping then thinking he was going to get going again or flooring it after he lost momentum

    • @CarQuestion
      @CarQuestion  8 лет назад

      +jeff m the point of this test is to see how the véhicle react in hard condition and not flooring it to get it done

    Learn how to drive Haldex in the snow up hills: manually select 3rd gear, then steady as you go! In full auto as you have it, you're applying too much torque causing too much wheel spin at all corners.

    • @CarQuestion
      @CarQuestion  8 лет назад

      +Pete Jr you cant get into 3 in this car... the goal of this test is to see how it react while slipping.

    • @petejr7583
      @petejr7583 8 лет назад +2

      move gear lever over to Sport Mode/manual mode, then push forward to 3rd gear. It works well in my V60 and XC60 when the traction control is overwhelmed. Same goes for my previous Audi's with quattro. You are basically putting it in "creeper mode" to keep the revs/torque down. Volvo's used to have a dedicated Winter Mode button on the gear shift which performed this (move into 3rd gear). Try it next time you lose full traction going up slippery hills in a Haldex equipped vehicles.

      The car is equipped with winter tire, there is a lot of ice under the snow and the hill is quite step! The car could have gone up the hill first shot, but the goal is to show how the awd react to slippy situation!

    車両の雪道走行性能以前に、オールシーズンタイヤはいている時点で、かなりのハンディですね。日本の雪道で主流のスタッドレスタイヤより、かなり劣りますから。まぁ、海外のタイヤ事情(気温・積雪量・雪質・除雪体制など日本とは違うので)は、それがスタンダードなんでしょうけど。

      +Cory Stansbury In previous iterations of VTM-4 there was a possibility to lock the rear wheels (i didn't say diff on purpose, because there's none) so theoretically in some conditions might have proved superior, but that's on paper. I'd like a real life feedback :)
