Extremely underrated aspect of this scene: Weyoun isn’t just doing this to relieve the tension and show how much of a farce it all is to him. He’s also giving Dukat a warning; he can’t try those tricks on him, either, down the road.
The way that Weyoun chugs that drink down is one of the most underrated moments in this show. Dukat and Sisko are well aware of what the other is capable of, and how to spar and parry with each other. Then Weyoun just swoops in and playfully reminds them both that he, and by extension the Dominion, are not bound by the same rules and limitations at all. What the Cardassians and Federation consider life and death epic struggles amount to little more than a game in the eyes of the Dominion. Even more telling is that when Sisko walks away from the table, it's not Dukat he's watching, it's Weyoun.
Weyoun's lines work even better in context, in that this episode's the first to explain that he's cloned when he dies-but _doesn't_ show his (later) fear of death. It seems like he _might_ actually kill himself for fun.
What I love about the scene is basically weyoun is having the time of his life: he believes himself above the federation and cardassians and is basically watching the animals at the zoo, is playing games and winning money at the same time, and if you take into account that most alcohol is essentially poison then he just had a really strong drink ergo he's having a really good time.
Dukat watching his extremely important Dominion associate seemingly reveal himself to be an idiot who casually drinks poison is one of the highlights of the series for me

Weyoun meant what he said at the start, "I like games." He was playing dumb in order to get both of them to lower their guard. I really believe Weyoun sent the poisoned kanar, in order to set up a confrontational scenario between Dukat and Sisko/Kira.

Gul Dukat's little "wha..?" and the fact that Sisko is genuinely taken aback gets me every time - rounded off with the perfectly-delivered "Are you insane?"

I think the reverse. He *likes* games, meaning he plays them a bunch. I think it's just part of the Vorta nature, maybe before they were turned into what they are. Good thing to leave in a diplomat, too. If your planet has some weird variation of golf all the powerful people play, the diplomat being all in on it would only help relations. Remember as long as you cooperate with the Dominion and follow their rules, life isn't honestly all that bad under them. They rule in a very different way than the Cardassians.

@John Frylock Think I remember hearing that they normally used syrup and food coloring. It was different things a couple times but in the end they decided to stick with that. It was never anything that you couldn't consume though.
When the Dominion showed up the Vorta were the least interesting of their races right up until Weyoun showed up. No one cared about the Andorians until Shran showed up. They really missed an oppurtunity never taking up Jeffrey Combs on his desire to be a main cast member. I'll bet he could make the Pakleds interesting if he wanted.
I believe Shran was meant to be a regular character in the Enterprise season 5 that never eventuated... shame... hope they give him a role in one of the ST series soon

I always liked the concept of the Dominion as an "anti-Federation" with several different species, instead of another "planet of hats" where everyone's exactly the same (I also liked that the Xindi were like this in Enterprise). And I like how it's established the Dominion doesn't just conquer everyone in the Gamma Quadrant, they sometimes use diplomacy and trade instead. I imagine Weyoun kept pretty busy negotiating for tulaberry wine and such.
Amber Lynn There’s also the fact that if it did kill him his clone would be activated to replace him and it would deliver to the founders the information of a new poison they would need to build an immunity for in their Vorta genetic model.
well caffeine is a powerful insecticide, so should be a poison to cardasians. If somebody said that a bottle had enough caffeine to kill 12 cardasians I might be tempted to try it too. :D The line between poison and narcotic can sometimes be fuzzy.

I asked Rene Auberjonois (Odo) on Twitter if a particular scene had been partly ad-libbed and he was clear that they always stuck to word for word accuracy. I wondered the same about this scene but the camera had to cut to Sisko's reaction so it was planned. As good as both Brooks and Alaimo are a showing surprise, I think their reactions would have been different if Combs had done that unscripted based on all the blooper reels I've seen.

This entire scene is just such a testament to the writing team from DS9. Every single word said has a purpose and direction. Subtext just drips from every single thing that comes out of the mouths of all three of them, and it really helps to put the burgeoning conflict into perspective. It is frankly sublime. Bravo.
Taking nothing away from Sir Patrick or Nimoy or other Star Trek greats, this was by far the best acted of all the Star Treks. Not just these three but Shimerman, Hertzler, Auberjonois, the list goes on. Fantastic writing as well.
James Martin Stewart was the only one who consistantly put in great performances in TNG. Dorn and Meaney put in their best performances on DS9. TNG was very lucky with Stewart.
TheTickRules, perhaps it's a bit like whiskey. Whiskey is a catch-all for many forms of alcohol. It can be made with corn, barley, rye, etc. It can be clear, yellowish, brown.
I like how when Sisko snarled "Is that what I'm doing," Dukat had the look of "Why didn't I expect that response from Sisko. I know full well he doesn't scare easily." They all played such wonderful dialogue just with their facial expressions.
Weyoun downing that drink was a Coombs improv. It had to be. Marc Alaimo was shocked enough that someone would drink the prop Kanar... his line "are you insane"... it's about half an octave up from the deep base voice "Dukat" usually uses. Avery Brooks (Sisko) seven years... that has to be one of the rare occasions he was not ready for what he just saw. Pity he didn't interact with Weyoun after the season 5 finale.
After personally seeing how happy Weyoun was at winning dabo, it’s so strange that Dukat had the gall to ask Weyoun if he was “anhedonic” (incapable of experiencing joy) later on in the series lol.
It makes perfect sense actually, the impression we get is that Vorta are essentially capable of acting however they want to best manipulate the people they're dealing with into giving them what they want. Just because he *looks* like he's enjoying it doesn't mean he's actually feeling anything.
Fun fact about Vorta. While they are immune to most poisons and toxins, some toxins can essentially get them high for a couple of moments. 2:14 Weyoun was tripping balls.
Apparently this thing about drinking it and Vorta being immune to poison was completely improvised by Combs in this scene. Makes the reactions från the other two actors quite fantastic!
That look on Weyoun's face as Sisko leaves is just priceless. Like a school kid watching one of his classmates takes the walk of shame to the principles office knowing exactly what he did.
Later on, Gul Dukat is getting salty because he's struggling not to feed, while Weyoun is crushing it as MVP. *Gul Dukat:* "I don't know WHY you insist on playing this ridiculous game..." *Weyoun: "I LIKE GAMES."*
Jeffrey Comb's body language is fantastic here. He gently sits down, crosses his legs the second he senses things are about to get tense, and just sits there wide-eyed as two of two most important Alpha Quadrant leaders bicker about petty political drama.
This is one of Avery Brooks's top 10 scenes as Benjamin Sisko. I always loved when he pulled power moves, but one of my favorite shots in the entire series is his reaction to Weyoun drinking the poison, mainly because it's so weird to see him so shocked at anything so unexpected.
Weyoun is by far my most favourite villain in DS9...!!! He is ruthless and completely evil and gives horrible orders to his troops! But he is also a great diplomatic genius and can be very polite and even sympathic...! And he does all of that with a smile on his face...!!! In my opinion Jeffrey Combs did a unique job to play the character of Weyoun...!!! Much much applause from my side for this underrated actor (who also played Brunt (FCA), Shran (Andorian) and of course Dr. Herbert West (Re-Animator)...!!!
For a diplomat turn general of an totalitarian regime, he can still crack a good joke and enjoy life. Kinda makes you wonder what Kim Ill does for fun to make him smile.

Just rewatched this episode the other day and this one scene made me glad I did. Jeffrey Combs is excellent here. I love the little sideways look at the end as if he's hoping Dukat will provide him with some more entertainment.
I find the idea of Weyoun drinking it, doing that diplomat joke and dying funny... even more so just the idea of the aftermath. "Does this count as assassination or suicide or... what?"

my dad used to buy this super-concentrated apple juice, very dark brown color, just thicker than plain water, and sweet like it's gonna give you diabetes just by looking at it.... you were supposed to dilute it with water, at 3 to 1, or 4 to 1 ratio, but most of the times I drank it right from the bottle. it started almost burning my throat of how sweet and thick it was, but over time, I developed a resistance to it, and I could drink it pure..... I'd still drink the equivalent of a diluted serving of it, but all at once, it would have made anyone else throw up. if it had had alcohol in it, and a little more kick, it would have been the closest thing to kanar.
Slithery as the Weyouns were, they were quite entertaining. Coombs is awesome. I've said on other posts, Shran the Andorian was a boss on ST:ENT. Also: Don't Eff with the Sisko.
Snodge Kat Underrated, yes. Undercast, HAH! To count, Coombs has been Brunt (FCA), A Ferengi on Enterprise, an alien that wanted holo-porn of Kira, Weyoun of course, and an alien in Voyager that forced Seven of Nine to fight in a holographic cage match. He probably has the most roles out of any actor that was in Star Trek.
Shran was just an Angry Weyoun, not much effort was put in by Combs to make the character sound any differen't to Weyoun. Atleast he put more effort into making Brunt sound differen't, even after Weyoun was introduyced the season after Brunt was.
It's sad that the Weyoun who ended up defecting, basically, was killed. He could have become a very very very cool permanent character aboard the station.
I'd say drinking a cup full of poison because your natural immune response is overpowered is a "weird flex, but okay" moment, but it was done by a Jeffrey Combs character, so it gets a pass.
Weyoun is one of the best villains in Star Trek. In fact, he's one of the best villains in science fiction in general. A fantastically written, fantastically acted character.

At the end of the day weyoun has no real gripe with the federation. The founders said to fight a war with the federation so that's what he did.

I think Weyoun is being a perfect diplomat. Show some appreciations for the opponent's culture. Show himself to be a "Regular guy".

Amber Lynn There’s also the fact that if it did kill him his clone would be activated to replace him and it would deliver to the founders the information of a new poison they would need to build an immunity for in their Vorta genetic model.
well caffeine is a powerful insecticide, so should be a poison to cardasians. If somebody said that a bottle had enough caffeine to kill 12 cardasians I might be tempted to try it too. :D
The line between poison and narcotic can sometimes be fuzzy.
That gobsmacked "Whaa--" and look on Dukat's face when Weyoun drinks the kanar is so natural I wonder how much of it was even scripted.
I'd think all of it. Marc Alaimo is a masterful actor.
It would be so funny if that was adlibbed and Vorta poison immunity was because of an outtake they left in.
According to Casey Biggs, he said in an interview that the stuff that they used for Kanar tasted really bad
@@detectivesnickers6176 they used straight up corn syrup for Kanar...the actor who played Damar in the later seasons had to drink tons of it and the green stuff they always had in those square glasses.
I asked Rene Auberjonois (Odo) on Twitter if a particular scene had been partly ad-libbed and he was clear that they always stuck to word for word accuracy. I wondered the same about this scene but the camera had to cut to Sisko's reaction so it was planned. As good as both Brooks and Alaimo are a showing surprise, I think their reactions would have been different if Combs had done that unscripted based on all the blooper reels I've seen.
Y'know, even if he is part of an oppressive quadrant-spanning empire, Weyoun's just adorable!
The verbal wars between Dukat and Sisko are some of the best dialogue ever written
and yet so easily shut down by Weyoun. A great scene

This entire scene is just such a testament to the writing team from DS9. Every single word said has a purpose and direction. Subtext just drips from every single thing that comes out of the mouths of all three of them, and it really helps to put the burgeoning conflict into perspective. It is frankly sublime. Bravo.

Well obviously. They were genetically designed to be diplomats and administrators. The Jem-Hadar were the ones with the strong necks.
Let's say they did have stronger necks to better survive neck snapping, Weyoun still has an instant kill switch hidden in it.
The lizard guys had the genes for strength.
Taking nothing away from Sir Patrick or Nimoy or other Star Trek greats, this was by far the best acted of all the Star Treks. Not just these three but Shimerman, Hertzler, Auberjonois, the list goes on. Fantastic writing as well.
Not to mention that the show did more to actually expand and develop the races of the ST universe than most of the other post TNG series combined
James Martin Stewart was the only one who consistantly put in great performances in TNG. Dorn and Meaney put in their best performances on DS9. TNG was very lucky with Stewart.

I like how when Sisko snarled "Is that what I'm doing," Dukat had the look of "Why didn't I expect that response from Sisko. I know full well he doesn't scare easily." They all played such wonderful dialogue just with their facial expressions.
Dukat says, " ah, no thank you. I'm not particularly thirsty right now."
Says this while holding a drink in his hand. Guilty.
After watching this scene 100 times, I just noticed that too.
Watching this as a kid, I never realised how clever Sisko was in his wording, getting Dukat to implicitly admit to trying to poison Ghemour.

Marc Alaimo was shocked enough that someone would drink the prop Kanar... his line "are you insane"... it's about half an octave up from the deep base voice "Dukat" usually uses.
Avery Brooks (Sisko) seven years... that has to be one of the rare occasions he was not ready for what he just saw.
Pity he didn't interact with Weyoun after the season 5 finale.
After personally seeing how happy Weyoun was at winning dabo, it’s so strange that Dukat had the gall to ask Weyoun if he was “anhedonic” (incapable of experiencing joy) later on in the series lol.
It makes perfect sense actually, the impression we get is that Vorta are essentially capable of acting however they want to best manipulate the people they're dealing with into giving them what they want. Just because he *looks* like he's enjoying it doesn't mean he's actually feeling anything.
Fun fact about Vorta. While they are immune to most poisons and toxins, some toxins can essentially get them high for a couple of moments.

Apparently this thing about drinking it and Vorta being immune to poison was completely improvised by Combs in this scene. Makes the reactions från the other two actors quite fantastic!

Along with "poor eyesight, good ears" this is one of Weyoun's best scenes.

This is one of Avery Brooks's top 10 scenes as Benjamin Sisko. I always loved when he pulled power moves, but one of my favorite shots in the entire series is his reaction to Weyoun drinking the poison, mainly because it's so weird to see him so shocked at anything so unexpected.
Dukat: Are you insane??
Weyoun: No, but you'll be soon enough
Dukat: What?
Weyoun: What?
Tbh I was expecting Weyoun to actually die there and just be replaced by another a few episodes later.

Weyoun is by far my most favourite villain in DS9...!!! He is ruthless and completely evil and gives horrible orders to his troops! But he is also a great diplomatic genius and can be very polite and even sympathic...! And he does all of that with a smile on his face...!!! In my opinion Jeffrey Combs did a unique job to play the character of Weyoun...!!! Much much applause from my side for this underrated actor (who also played Brunt (FCA), Shran (Andorian) and of course Dr. Herbert West (Re-Animator)...!!!

For a diplomat turn general of an totalitarian regime, he can still crack a good joke and enjoy life. Kinda makes you wonder what Kim Ill does for fun to make him smile.
I don't think Weyoun is actually evil. I think he falls more along the Amoral spectrum.
@@Escap1st7 He sort of is, thanks to "Treachery, Faith and the Great River." It's pretty obvious if not for his genetic disposition to blind Founder obedience, he'd actually be a really cool guy. But with it, he will be a monster if that'll further Dominion goals.

Took me years to notice that Weyun just gave away a secret about his race that would have been very handy if kept a secret.
I guess he do it for break this atmosphere of "one word more and i will kill you". So thus was actually a very smart diplomatic move.
Just rewatched this episode the other day and this one scene made me glad I did. Jeffrey Combs is excellent here. I love the little sideways look at the end as if he's hoping Dukat will provide him with some more entertainment.
I find the idea of Weyoun drinking it, doing that diplomat joke and dying funny... even more so just the idea of the aftermath. "Does this count as assassination or suicide or... what?"

my dad used to buy this super-concentrated apple juice, very dark brown color, just thicker than plain water, and sweet like it's gonna give you diabetes just by looking at it....
you were supposed to dilute it with water, at 3 to 1, or 4 to 1 ratio, but most of the times I drank it right from the bottle.
it started almost burning my throat of how sweet and thick it was, but over time, I developed a resistance to it, and I could drink it pure..... I'd still drink the equivalent of a diluted serving of it, but all at once, it would have made anyone else throw up.
if it had had alcohol in it, and a little more kick, it would have been the closest thing to kanar.
Slithery as the Weyouns were, they were quite entertaining. Coombs is awesome. I've said on other posts, Shran the Andorian was a boss on ST:ENT. Also: Don't Eff with the Sisko.

To count, Coombs has been Brunt (FCA), A Ferengi on Enterprise, an alien that wanted holo-porn of Kira, Weyoun of course, and an alien in Voyager that forced Seven of Nine to fight in a holographic cage match. He probably has the most roles out of any actor that was in Star Trek.

Shran was just an Angry Weyoun, not much effort was put in by Combs to make the character sound any differen't to Weyoun.
Atleast he put more effort into making Brunt sound differen't, even after Weyoun was introduyced the season after Brunt was.

I'd say drinking a cup full of poison because your natural immune response is overpowered is a "weird flex, but okay" moment, but it was done by a Jeffrey Combs character, so it gets a pass.
Weyoun is one of the best villains in Star Trek. In fact, he's one of the best villains in science fiction in general. A fantastically written, fantastically acted character.
