      Quark is a Ferengi through and through, but unlike most we see, he has a sense of genuine loyalty to his family. Well Quark and Odo could poke at Rom, but Odo was this weird quasi relative for Quark. Not quite a friend. Not quite an enemy. But always there and they counted on each other in such a weird way. I think that’s why Quark was like: yep he is when Odo called Rom an idiot in Babel.

    Everyone thinks of Quark as utterly selfish, and while there's certainly an element of self-interest in his appeal to Rom, there's a few things here to note:
    1. Quark knows his brother's favorite breakfast and has it ready for him before he sits down.
    2. He seems genuinely concerned about Rom working the night shift.
    3. When he realizes Rom is happy, even if he isn't pleased, he doesn't try to convince him to come back any more.

      @Elite20001 8 лет назад +23

      +Asher Tye they don't charge him for every little thing? they take 100% of his pay I'd say that's slavery. Quark did at least give an excuse for docking pay. as well if rom doesn't do a good job the federation can and will take away his vacation time or put him in the brig. And being a engineering isn't really great I mean when was the last time you heard someone said I'm glad I get to work for a pat on the back and bragging rights.

    • @Asher_Tye
      @Asher_Tye 8 лет назад +138

      +Elite20001 It's not slavery. That would imply that he doesn't have a choice in the matter. Nothing prevents him from ceasing to be an engineer and pursuing other career options, and in fact the Federation would assist him in such for free (particularly if he showed talent for it). And who's to say they don't pay him, or at least provide an expense account? Do you think Quark just lets Miles and Bashir use his holodecks for free?
      And Quark docked his pay for the slightest infraction. That was one of the plot points of the episode where Rom got Quark's employees to unionize, that he could basically withhold their money for any reason because Ferengi work contracts are fundamentally biased against them.

    When you realize that Rom would eventually be responsible for introducing the Alpha Quadrant to the concept of self-replicating mines...

    • @Innomen
      @Innomen 7 лет назад +67

      Actually that was a case of the federation being forced to choose between annihilation and it's usual fetish for Luddism.
      It's just that Federation officers are so averse to innovation that thinking in terms of remixing technologies is beyond their capacity.

    • @danr.5017
      @danr.5017 7 лет назад +114

      But self replicating mines is a terrifying thought. The federation just used it to wall on the wormhole but they could easily be used to commit all kinds of heinous war crimes.
      Start out with a dozen of them and you could blanket entire worlds. In a couple hours they can blanket an entire planet in an impossible to get rid of mine feild. When they eventually start decaying in orbit they wil land and detonate in unpredictable locations. Every time one one explodes two more are created.
      It woudl be an effective way of carpetbombing an entire planet with any size payload.

      Agreed -- the ultimate blockade.

    • @Innomen
      @Innomen 7 лет назад +37

      +Dan R.
      Actually you're pointing out why the concept is silly.
      Replicators don't magically produce power, they convert power stored (antimatter) into other forms (food, clothing, etc).
      If this actually worked they'd simply make star base sized replicators and churn out warp cores to power the star base leading to an infinite power loop.
      The whole concept breaks down when you realize there's only so much antimatter (power and explosive) in the field to begin with. Torpedoes have an ammo count for this reason.
      As presented, it's basically a plot hole and plot armor combined.
      The only way it could make any sense is if you assume it's more like a distributed torpedo turret being "reloaded" over all by DS9 as needed.

    • @tnerbtnerb5136
      @tnerbtnerb5136 7 лет назад +80

      Brandon Sergent I believe the only reason it worked was because the replicators and cloaking devices were powered by devices that collected residual energy that came from the wormhole itself. This solution was literally only possible in this one unique location.

      When the Ferengi began to really find their voice one of their primary characteristics was a relentless drive to acquire. And as the series explored that drive, acquisition became about more than latinum or material profit. We see Ferengi who have set their minds on other things and are just as driven to acquire them. Like Nog with his Starfleet career.
      I sometimes wonder if the Ferengi were perhaps quite an aggressive people in their early history and that the first Nagus reshaped their society by turning them from aggression to acquisition.

    • @JL0ndon
      @JL0ndon 2 года назад +1

    • @hagamapama
      @hagamapama 2 года назад +5

      @@JL0ndon Every Ferengi goes through phases where they have a very possessive, almost aggressive need to obtain a certain goal. When a Ferengi decides he knows what he wants he will devote his whole self to getting it turning them from timid opportunists into ferocious, implacably determined adversaries.
      It's not all Latinum though. TNG features an (unusually tall) Ferengi scientist who is just as driven and intensely focused on proving his scientific theory. Dai'mon Bok of course is fixated on getting revenge against Picard. There was another that was fixated on acquiring Lxswana Troi.
      That theme carries over into DS9. The three main Ferengi encounter that same passionately driven Ferengi nature at times. Nog, of course, became fixated on his career and became a dedicated Starfleet officer. Quark for most of the series has already gotten what he wanted (the bar) and is enjoying his hard-won place in the world. But he gets bitten too, when he sets out to acquire the Klingon woman Grilka.
      And then there's Rom. Rom who appears to be a terrible Ferengi and has never been bitten with the acquisition urge -- until he decides to try to fight for Leeta. He defied his brother, formed an illegal union and ultimately struck off on his own into society with the goal of acquiring HAPPINESS. Both for himself and his loved ones.
      The one time Rom ever collard his brother and held him to account was when Quark did something that threatned Nog's happiness. He shows the same relentless passion in defending his son's happiness as most Ferengi show acquiring other less ephemeral things. For Rom, his happiness and the happiness of his friends was worth more to him than Latinum, which was his weakness when his circle was just Quark but as he opened his arms to others, it became a huge strength for him.
