What I like about this case is that the kid is calm and answering truthfully (seemingly at least). I like hearing the play by play of what happened and their thoughts/relational at the time much more than having to listen to these guys try to lie their way out of the trouble they are in. For instance, when michael said the reason he shot the gas station clerk in the face is because "sometimes people get shot" as if that's just a normal shitty day to day thing to happen. Totally crazy line of thinking but interesting to hear that's how he thinks. One cold hearted person
Couldn't sleep for 4 days, chain smoking, inappropriately elated and excited ... this guy is clearly in the middle of a manic episode. I didn't know it could happen to someone so young. So tragic for the victims.
I disagree. If anything, he may be coming down after a manic episode. The things he mentions like the sleeplessness and impulsive behavior fit a manic episode. But the kid sitting there being interrogated is anything but manic. His tone of voice is monotonous, his speech and movements are slow and his responses are often delayed. He says 'I don't know...' a lot. He's showing none of the typical signs of mania but definitely some of the signs of post-manic depression. Bipolar disorder often develops during adolescence, so between 15-25 years old. So his age does fit. But don't get me wrong, none of this is an excuse for what he did. During a manic psychosis, people can do extreme things but he also shows none of the signs of psychosis. Other than that, there's no reason for him to kill people. Having bipolar disorder doesn't make you more likely to become a murderer. Having a f*cked up personality does.
He’s not manic when he’s being interviewed or has been arrested. Manic people talk fast & keep moving & shift from subject to subject. Being unable to sleep for 4 days is potentially a sign of mania
@@allisonjames2923 very true I knew what he described was mania but how he was acting was not I have bipolar 1 and I can be manic for a month you talk so fast that you stutter on your words constantly he was very slow with the responses and when I’m manic I don’t think before I speak it just comes out at that’s why I start stuttering. It irritated the hell out of me that his attorney or whatever was saying that if he had meds he wouldn’t have done that which is a complete lie. I was diagnosed at 16 and I would randomly quit my meds for sometimes a year I’ve never attacked or fought anyone or picked up a gun or thought to ever hurt anyone but myself. I was at my lowest to where I went to 3 psych wards at the age of 17 and still while I was in a psychotic break I had never once thought to hurt anyone else or a family member let alone an innocent bystander.
Manic episodes can potentially happen to anyone of any age. Generally they don’t occur until after the beginning of puberty, but even teenagers can experience a manic episode.

I just gotta say that I’ve only been watching for few minutes and this video is well done with editing the bullshit out and the guy who’s narrating has refrained from using any sort of odd ball type of voice for affect. Keeping it simple and to the facts. Well done. I subscribed. Thanks dude.
Wow! You individually listed the numbers for suicide hotlines in a bunch of countries! As a Guatemalan born citizen, I really appreciate that. Muchísimas gracias. 💙🙏
Wow, he laughs when he describes her gasping as he shot her 😩 the fact that he had bi polar, has nothing to do with why he did it. He is clearly just a pyschopath 💯💯💯💯💯
Honestly, it probably does have something to do with it. Idk why you seem to think having a very serious, mental disorder you're not taking meds for wouldn't impact doing something like this but it's foolish, and wildly ignoring how things work. That being said, mental health episodes does not absolve accountability. Dude deserves to serve for life just like he took away lives.
He most likely will. Do you think he won't escalate any violent situation towards him? It is well known nowadays that Violently mentally ill people don't stop being violently mentally ill if you put them in difficult circumstances.
What do you mean? People like him thrive in adult prisons, going in with nothing to lose at a young age, by the time he’s 30 he will be feared and respected in there. It sucks but just like Charles Manson says “To you prison is inside these walls, to me prison is outside these walls.”
He’s actually a really good example of the criminally insane. The complete apathy to his own and others life, calm openness with the cops, comfortable to incriminate himself, no emotion involved just “why would I shoot her if I wasn’t gonna kill her” etc. “He’s a shell” - is what criminal insanity is. You can’t scare the criminally insane with punishment, because they don’t fear for themselves.
@@wednesday13ck - he’s not insane. He’s not experiencing a break in reality, he doesn’t hear voices and there is no sign of schizophrenia or MPD. He does however, exhibit all the signs of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder and Sociopathy. All are personality disorders, not mental illness.
I was shocked when I clicked on this video to hear the deaths took place in Iowa. Being an Iowan, and visiting the Crossroads gas station in Algona often makes me feel sad. I never knew about this case. I was also a young teenager when this took place. Thank you for bringing awareness to this case! I hope that the victims family's are doing okay. He is exactly where he belongs.
Wow just read your big long note in the description. I love that you have the suicide hotlines for each country. Extremely impressive and thank you for all your hard work. Know this would have taken a long time. Appreciate it.
The fact that these people get to be coddled by interrogators and cops and are not handed over to be dealt with by the victims families is the biggest injustice. I bet 99% of murders would stop if the killers knew the victims families got to have their way with them after instead of getting free food and a roof over their head and gym membership for the rest of their lives.
out of all the thousands of interrogations I’ve watched, this is probably the ‘best’ treatment, given to someone like him, almost 25 min just trying to organise smokes and a decent amount of food for someone who just killed two women. I guess it’s a interrogation technique, so can’t be too harsh, but it just still doesn’t sit right with me.
Thanks for cutting off and speeding the unnecessary parts. That’s a thing I find very annoying about other true crime channels and as far as I know you’re the only one doing it. Appreciate the time you take to edit these interrogations shorter.
Yo thank you for the video, and especially thanks for the transcripts! I honestly couldn't understand a word they said and without those captions I wouldn't be able to watch! Well done!
He's very smug. I wonder just how long he was incarcerated before he lost his edge. He seems to thrive off attention, you don't get much of that serving life. Certainly would have killed his buzz quickly when he realised he has nothing to look forward to for the rest of his life.
@@BrandonToy I wonder how many days he maintained the arrogance/thrill once he was locked up. I'm assuming it wasn't long. It would be very interesting to study his changes over time when left to his own thoughts and with no stimulation.
@@juliadavis5957 in all honesty, he is a prime candidate for a white gang membership. He probably could become comfortable in prison if he can adjust his mind-frame to the life. It all just depends. There are prisons where you can get access to almost anything, and if you have the time and determination then transferring there is all part of the long game.
This kid reminds me of some of my friends around that age. I got pretty deep into drugs and I've done my fair share of time and jail and rehab but luckily I was able to escape it. Some of the friends I hung around with at that age were already getting arrested for violent things, I was actually afraid of some of the people in my circle. Listening to this kid talk, he really does remind me of some of the more undesirable people I hung out with around his age. Scary shit
I was literally this kid but not as stupid and had no urge to hurt people unless they were asking for it. 7 years sober now and self employed so I turned out alright lol
Yeah! He actually reminded me of a friend I used to hang out with a lot 20+ years ago. He was ok, nothing remarkable, no real red flags. At some point he broke into my house and stole all that was of value. And he did the same to his other, even closer friend. Later when he got caught it turned out that he'd got into drugs. But watching now just how much this guy in the video reminds me of him, I am pretty sure he had something like that in him all along.
I was on the periphery of that too. Some friends of friends were heading toward violence and more serious crimes. I moved away from those people, but my friends still tended to be pot heads like me. It wasn’t until later in life that I severed all ties to my old crowd. I had moved away and made something of my life, but they had not. One friend in particular never did, and it got to a point where I had to walk away. He’s a decent enough guy, but he got to be in his late 40s and still leeching off his parents, while blaming the world for his problems. He was the last one I had to cut off. Several others just refused to get their act together. If you’re young and you’re reading this, trust me you’re better off straightening your life out and not letting the other people drag you down.
Vicky Hall is my mother, and I was just researching this case again for an assignment and stumbled upon this video. If you have any questions, you can ask me in this thread if you’d like.
Stay strong! My question is what would you do to the killer if you could do it without any reprehension or penalty? Would you do anything? Do you feel any relief that he is gonna die in prison, does it even matter? Sorry for the stupid questions.
Lol, ask me questions that I won't come back and answer guys. Admittedly the first commenters questions would've probably made me ignore the thread too.
I like when creators speed up the Miranda and the wait unless the suspect is doing weird shit usually it's what I do. Also it shows that nothing is being cut out when showing the speed up
I remember hearing about this case on Evil Lives Here and his mom said she has always known he had issues and feared he would do something like this. The women he killed had similarities to his mother. She said she felt he wanted to kill her. When he stole the car and gun his parents were waiting for him thinking he was going to come back and kill them. All the doctors and help she tried to get for him didn't help or want to help. So sad that these poor women lost their lives. I read the name Michael is one of the top names for killers Christopher is another common name. I was interested one day and looked up common names of murderers.
That was him making a list of "Drugs Michael has not 'experimented' with." Ironically, I don't think that particular page ended up with much more than the title on it. Don't get me wrong, I take zero issue with people dabbling responsibly. I just get the sense Michael hasn't done much of anything responsibly up to this point. Seems like the kid is just slowly unraveling into an arrogant, sociopathic little prick. Normally, with minors, I'd say something like, "I hope he gets the help he so clearly needs while he still has a chance at a solid life," but... I think it's safe to say he doesn't have much interest in wanting said help, even if it were available to him. Sadly, at this rate, I think he's merely on his way to becoming a few more statistics in a classroom textbook he'll never read -- and doesn't seem to mind one bit. Michael Swanson: Last seen going 'In & Out at the Kum & Go!' Coming to a toothless mugshot and/or an obituary near you!

He honestly acts like a child who got caught taking candy. It seems he doesn’t understand the seriousness and finality of what he did. Extremely creepy and cold
Yes. I don't imagine that he was smiling (smirking) too much once he figured out that he threw his life away. I'm sure prison boring as Hell. RIP to those poor women who were tragically killed by this psycho. He reminds me of those people who kill just to experience what it is like to kill someone.
Nice video! Thanks for making it. I enjoy learning about these people, although it’s terrifying and heartbreaking. It shouldn’t be pushed on people but I wish more people would find these productions. We all need to understand mental illness better.
About the smiling. I’ve seen a few comments mentioning that he’s forcing it to try to look evil, but I disagree. He looks jovial. He’s smiling with his eyes. He looks genuinely pleased, even elated. I don’t think it’s forced at all, I think he’s enjoying himself.
The thing I like about JCS videos is the context they provide to the interrogations. Like the methods used by the detectives or psychological insights into the suspects. That is sadly missing here. Maybe something to think about for the future, because otherwise it was great.
Oh that poor boy. Those drugs are designed to remove emotional feelings. If you do not have emotional feelings you are capable of anything. Hold that poor boy.

It's not just once in awhile people "slip through the cracks".. when it comes to mental help the reality is that nearly no one gets the help they need. For various reasons.
Because they need to be told more than "have you tried meds? Have you tried journaling? Maybe you should meditate? What about exercise?" None of that stuff fixed true mental illness.
there is no help for evil. Evil is not an illness. Violent psychopaths aren't curable. He isn't having any "bipolar" episode right now. Oh and I'm a practicing psychiatrist. Other than using the word evil, I can replace that with antisocial personality disorder, and still there is no treatment for that: NONE. Despite his claims of not sleeping for 4 days, there is absolutely not one sign of any manic episode, when he's shown being escorted/arrested by the police, in his blue shirt; not one sign of any mental episode when he's being interviewed. If he is indeed Bipolar, the murders had nothing to do with it.
The choice of material and subtitles are awesome! I just wished there was more narration and more criminal psychology (what JCS is) involved. Maybe something to make your videos even better :)

He took her life and can't even remember what she looks like. So senseless. Her poor family.
Definitely!!!!!
Giving food, a cigarette and a light to suspects is an extremely common tactical Investigative tool.
One of the best put together stories I've seen. The captions, the news clips, good volume...well done
Shouldn't be doing acid and mushrooms at a young age, those things need to be treated with reverence
Manic episodes can potentially happen to anyone of any age. Generally they don’t occur until after the beginning of puberty, but even teenagers can experience a manic episode.
I can't thank you enough for providing subtitles and even giving us the nonverbal pointers. It was really helpful. Subbed!

That's what I gathered as well. I don't find it evil, I find it immature... the inability to grasp the self-f*cking he gave himself.

Possibly but as he’s not old enough to smoke I’m assume he’d be too young for an antisocial personality disorder diagnosis as you have to be an adult.

Exactly
He IS bipolar 😅
He's not insane he just doesn't care! He won't be smiling when he is taken into an adult prison.
He's in administrative segregation because he repeatedly stabbed another inmate.
Imagine what you'd want to do to the guy who murdered your mother for no reason and you hear him say, "I dunno, sometimes people get shot".
The fact that these people get to be coddled by interrogators and cops and are not handed over to be dealt with by the victims families is the biggest injustice.
Scary shit
Same it’s sad

How old were you when this happened? How did you find out ? Do you have any forgiveness for the killer?
Sorry to hear that
Sending love and prayers to you and your family. So sorry you had to endure the loss of your mother this way.

It's not just once in awhile people "slip through the cracks".. when it comes to mental help the reality is that nearly no one gets the help they need. For various reasons.
Underrated comment. Every single day, millions are in those cracks. I work in shelters, I see it when I try to date, it's everywhere.
