Suji bru, the famous war movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' was based on this river. In fact, the film was picturised in Sri Lanka. During WWII, the Japanese built a wooden bridge using British POWs for the Bangkok Rangoon railway line. Finally the British sabotaged it by blowing it with dynamites. Ironically the bridge was designed by POW British engineers.
My grandfather a Royal Indian doctor served in Burma during that time. He brought back with him spoils of war, a golden Buddha warped in parachute and a Samurai sword.
