Matt’s shop, thanks for not using starting fluid. I call that death to a diesel in a can. More in likely it’s broken rings. Or bad valves. But you can put oil in the injection holes and do compression test again to find out. I use atf for that. It could be stuck rings. But doubt that if it was running and quit. If it over heated then rings or cylinders.good luck. Glad to see it didn’t go to scrap yard.
I never use starting fluid on anything. In my mind, if it doesn't start on its own then it not fixed enough lol. Everyone keeps saying blown head gasket, but I'm pretty sure the rings are broken.
As you have made up that adapter for the comp tester, just connect it to an airline with that cyl on TDC compression stroke and listen to intake/exhaust/ oil filler to find out where the air is going. There's your problem!
Diesel last for a long time just throwing that advice! I parked a 7.3 diesel for 3 years and had a full tank and it started right up and drove it until empty with out a problem
I have a 1700 model Having saying problem. It got hard to start in, no start. I'm down to checking out the compression. Your video was real helpful on that.. Ann about the compression of release.. I have Did the outside check.. Almost certain it probably is low compression. Do you wanna rebuild the tractor for me? Ha ha, I do have a cup of mechanics around here MaryvilleTennessee.
I just bought a Yanmar YFL 875 For 800.00 With lots of attachments. Haven’t even picked it up yet. The guy says it ran when parked 😐 We’ll see on Saturday. Glad someone said NOT to use eather
Yanmar makes a great tractor (used to make all of JD compact tractors). Yanmar marine diesels are prolific and very reliable. This machine is worth saving.
Hey Matt, nice little tractor buddy. I think you did a great job going through all the nessessary system's and inspecting everything well. I think it's a great little project mate. I can't wait to see your next video. Stay safe and well buddy. 👍🤝🤠🇦🇺
SWEEEET little tractor! I'm not a mechanic, but I'm suspecting a blown head gasket.... especially since BOTH cylinders have low compression. I also I noticed what appears to be evidence of a coolant leak over a broad area between the head and block deck... A blown head gasket could also be the cause of low coolant in the radiator. Hope that's ALL it is and you have a good engine that can be salvaged.... :-)
Thanks! I really hope that's the only thing wrong with it. I haven't gotten the head off yet. That's the next step. IDK though, there was no coolant in the oil???
No.coolant in the oil- probably a matter of engine and oiling path design, combined with .where the gasket is blown out. Loosen the oil drain plug just enough to get seepage and see if you get water or oil.. :-)
Just rebuilt my ym2000 a month ago, I'll give them one thing, their reputation of being nearly indestructible is no exaggeration. Just don't let it ever overheat (>160 degrees F), and never use ether (instantly kills the rings and scars the liners). Ask me how I know, lol.
@@MattsShop aside from the obvious things like taking your time with cleaning everything and assembly, best advice i have is to use lithium grease before you fire it back up. Also, be aware that there are a ton of interference fit parts internally, so freeze the new wrist pins and pistons beforehand, and don't force anything together, should all just slide apart/together by hand when cold. I let everything warm up to room temp once it was together before compressing the rings. Also, there's 2 o-rings (square rings if its factory original) per sleeve. According to the guys at hoye tractor, the sleeves don't need to be changed unless they're scarred or pitted, new rings will make it cheaper on a rebuild. Personally, I'd buy 4 sets of rings and 2 new sleeves if you're going to go that route, just in case. Total price on my rebuild was about $800 in parts at the time.
Because both of the cylinders low compression and it had no coolant it is very likely to be a head gasket which are rather common online so I hope you can get her to run again
I think someone tried to rebuild the engine and did it wrong. The evidence is that there is red RTV silicone all over the engine. I hope it's just the head gasket. Oh, it'll run. Just a question of how much work I gotta do👍
Everyone has to start somewhere. Haters going to hate, as long as someone is bitching you know you must be doing it right. Your shop your rules and leave it at that
I was told it had low compression and I suspected low compression. I do things differently. I assume I know nothing until I prove the problem. Otherwise you are throwing parts at the thing, never really diagnosing anything.
Smart man! I always say if it doesn’t start on it’s own something is wrong with it. Could be valves as well. I have seen even the compression release get out of adjustment to cause pore compression. Or carbon stuck the valves. Could be easy fix or pulling pistons out. Do you hear any air ex caping from exhaust or intake side? If no take oil cap off and try to hear if air is ex caping from the pistons. Oil should raise compression up. Would like to know what you find.
Exactly, I don't even own any starting fluid. Hopefully it is something simple like a head gasket. It's not the valves or a piece of carbon. I'm sure of that.
HA!!! When I started watching this, I was like " SWEET Anthony Kiedis of the R.H.C.Ps got a sweeeeeeeeet tractor! I never knew he was so knowledgeable about tractors."
I was a tractor mechanic for 15-16 years back in the 70's- 80's. John Deere's little tractors were made by Yanmar...the 650,750,850, 950 on up to 30 hp were all just Yanmars.....
@@MattsShop Deere did change specs in some areas, for the most part though you could exchange parts. Where they made them different was coupling the different components together as in a 650 deere may actually have the transmission of another equal or larger model from the yanmar. Most if not all regular maintiance items will interchange....I don't know where the new deere's are made, I've been gone from the tractor world for 21+ years. Those little yanmars were kubota's competition...good tractors. There was a time no matter the brand most 30hp and lower were coming out of japan. There are a few exceptions.
I doubt it will start with that compression because not enough heat is generated. Diesel engines are around 20:1 as my old grey matter remembers. Ya need to replace the head gasket. Then put a little oil in the cylinder and turn it over a few times. This will help seal the rings. Then see if this brings the compression up. You should see a fine spray out of the injectors. If it looks like a squirt gun spray it won't start. That piston in the injector is super close tolerance so be careful. The shims regulate the amount of fuel that is sprayed into the cylinder so don't mix them up. Looks like the pump is working and that's usually the first problem. Make sure the filter's and/or strainer's are good on the pump. Good luck
Usually head gasket only takes out one cylinder. Should still try to start on one or the other. The two cylinder diesels will run on one cylinder. Unless it blew out in between the two. But both should be same compression if that’s the case. Fill radiator up with water and turn it over. If you see water coming out of the injector holes you will know. Or put injectors back in and see if you get air bubbles in the radiator. I would believe on the pistons aren’t happy or the rings. Probably got really hot is my guess. But not there myself so just guessing.
When I took the valve cover off I could see puffs of air coming from where the head meets the engine block. I hope it's the head gasket, but the oil had ZERO coolant in it. Unless it blew out in a way that didn't compromise the water passages sealing. I still think it's the rings/pistons.
Hi Matt , a three cylinder yanmar with the same injectors. Im getting no deisel in the fuel line back to the tank . That's a YM200B. A great unmolested Yanmar. Watching now but I'm sure that one will run with little work. Worst case someone over heated it and blew or cracked the head. Just a gasket is not a bad job. Don't use starting fluid you will break rings and blow holes in pistons.

Great video, What year is that tractor. I don't much about Yanmar tractors.
These old Yanmars don't really have "years" they were all pretty much the same throughout the years. This was built somewhere between mid 1970's to mid 1980's.
@@MattsShop Thanks
Great video!
Great comment!
I have an 18HP Yanmar diesel and after power washing, it will not start. Starter will not engage as ig the shifter is not in Neutral.
Any ideas, Please ?
There are no electronic ignition parts on these tractors. I'd start with the key ignition switch. I believe there is a starter solenoid. Probably got some water in somewhere.
@@MattsShop Thank you .. I did not get water into the ignition switch. I crossed the solenoid connections and it works but it does not engage the starter. There are also fuses mounted on the block that are good fuses. i am confused.
ues some Vinegar to clean the radiaor,
Check out part 2!
Pull the compression release.
It was on.
make sure the compression rellease is off
Yup, did it both ways!
Do you still have that tractor around? I have one and need a part.
I'm rebuilding the engine as we speak.
@@MattsShop Awsome! This is a neat little tractor! I have the tiller too. I just rigged up a snow plow! good luck!
@@MattsShopgreat video. Can you tell me what the head bolts need to be torqued to? Hoye apparently changed hands and have no info and I cant find my service manual. Thanks
It's worth fixing you can rebuild it real cheap
Yesssir
Hopefully not cracked head. With not knowing what it looks like under valve cover. Should be around the head and block meets is where you should be seeing air puffing out. Not under valve cover. Could be wrong tho.
I hope not. That gets expensive FAST!
Decompression lever is on
Nope, won't start both ways.
Fix your compression release
Nope, not the problem.
Purple power will clean it up.
Purple power!!!
@MattsShop purple power is sold at dollar general and advance auto stores and I use it to clean engines and degreaser I clean my tractors it works great.
subscribed thanks man
Thanks for the sub!
Nice!
Thanks!
Decompression lever if you have a weak batter hold lever and turn key when its spinning fast let go of the lever and she starts
The lever on this thing is a cable that is either out or in. You can't just turn it on or off easily.
@@MattsShop that's cause yours is old
The engine is done it needs to be fully reconditioned, c"mon if it had a been good you wouldn't a got it for nothing.
Yup, pretty much sums it up!
Just pour some thick oil down the cylinders let it sit for bouta week then try again
Tried it. Still had bad compression.
how to install a power pack on a 1994evenrude motor
Lost compression look at the valve cover gasket all that rust.
diesel is good
looks to me likr your not getting any fuel to the ejector
The fitting was loose
Good opener up and get a bible for the tractor.
Service Manual? Lol never heard it called that.
Your compression releases down Pull It Up
Step on the clutch to start.
That doesn't effect the engine.
Hey bro where you live? I have yanmar too. And i have question
I live in the South. What's your question?
Nice
Thanks! Stay tuned!
valves are stuck open
Guess again!
if it drain in to the engine the oil would look muddy
Nahh, it's nice and black oil.
You should have tried starting fluid at first try
No way I would ever use starting fluid on a diesel.
Moron gives advice that destroys Diesel engines. 🤦🏻♂️
Seek Jesus everyone! Time is running out! He’s the ONLY way!
People who don’t know what they are doing, shoiuld not work on tractors.
Good thing I know what I'm doing. Check out the rest of the channel!
put your compression relief valve closed
Compression release is open
Did it both ways, still had low compression.
I see sure would have been sweet if it could have been that simple 👍
I know right! It was stuck open when I got it. I was sure that was the problem.
Yanmar motors used in many sea going fishing boats. Those guys no what's reliable..
That's what I've seen they are used in a lot of larger boats and heavy equipment.
