- Below is a beautiful game that has a lot to offer players and a lot of interesting sights to see. However, it requires the players to put up with quite a bit in order to see all that.

Btw this has become my favourite traditional review channel. Mainly because of the focus and drive for delivering notes on gameplay, rather than relying on some annoying youtube personality
Also, no political bullshit. Unlike IGN, Gamespot and other activist website pretending to talk about games.

First time I died was 3 and a half hours in. SCREW YOU SPIKE TRAP! I wouldn't say the game is unforgiving. It just doesn't hold your hand. I never feel a death is bullshit/jumpscare (whereas that's common in mega man, and dark souls).
Beautiful game.
the hunger/thirst/warmth meters need to be readjusted a little. I spend half of my hunger to get my old stuff just to then not have enough items to satisfy the hunger to find a campfire w/ no resources. also, not being able to use a campfire again after using it w/ same explorer.

I picked up Below on launch day and played through the weekend with no guides, hints or spoilers. I loved the sense of wonder in solving a puzzle, which always makes you feel brilliant when you do. I agree with many points in the review, but please remove some of the spoiler footage here. Exploring is part of the adventure, and solving the mystery is what makes the journey worth it. Spoilers can take the mystique out of such amazing games, which is why I avoid walkthroughs, unfortunately after watching your review I have had a few portions of the game spoiled.
Yeah I had to stop it a third of the way in. I don't need them telling me what happens and how to play, if I wanted that I'd watch a Lets Play. I just wanted to know if it was relatively good or not, I'm still gonna play it but yeesh...

Hi, I just wanted to say, well done! Yours is one of the few reviews that actually do this game justice.
I'm a fan of superbrothers s&s and I'm glad these guys are still working. This game looks to have a similar atmosphere. Looks promising to me.

Glad I got this on game pass, when I went in blind knowing nothing about...and got one shorted by a fucking bush and started over after an hour of running around I looked up a review and deleted it. I refuse to play games that confuse “challenging” with “frustrating” there’s a few cheap mechanics in all the greatness. Like hunger and dying in one hit.
Simple? The artwork ambience and creating atmosphere alone is more then 95% of tripleA games manages to succeed.
Below Sounds and looks like something i would really love. Like a dark zelda

When capy says 'Challenge', they mean 'Frustration'. I wanted to love Below so much, but when I had to deal with my first corpse run, I said "screw this" and refunded it instead. I love roguelikes; I love Cogmind, Deadcells, and currently loving Hades. I also love Soulslikes; I loved Hollow Knight and HLD.
But Below goes out of the way to make playing it a pain; the fog of war is too slow to reveal, the visuals are low-contrast and muddy (on a 34" 1440p IPS display), the hunger and thirst mechanics are annoying and require you to waste time farming upper levels, and did I mention the corpse run? When I die in Hades, I can jump back in to a new round. When I die in Below, it's an absolute slog to re-do the upper levels to get that dumb lantern back, even if I had unlocked all the shortcuts.
Man. There is a zone in the game insane. You have to pass 5 levels to hit The shortcut. And There are tentacles atacking you all The time. They are off screen... Its riddiculous.
me needs owl eyes to see mini litel peeple. or a 100 inch tv. i do not have space for ze tv.

You lose your gear on death? Unless the game is scaled such that you earn gear as you go or that enemies are never given HP and Def as you go such that beginner gear can kill late game mobs, I don't see how that would be fun. Also hard to tell how important the lamp is. Does the fog and cold make levels without it hard or just aggravating? Thanks for the review, but I wish such things had been elaborated on more than just twelve different ways of saying, "It's hard, but has atmosphere."
All weapons you collect stay relevant, also armor and helmets are more of a bonus. I played through the game without the best gear. What is more important is skill, gear doesnt affect your efficiency that much.

On the other hand, if you're a ghoulish vampire, it might be a young lawyer's wife, or possibly you could be looming out of a dark alley toward a hypnotized virgin? I mean, you have to use context clues man

I haven´t died in this game yet (I am not so far). But I know I am going to die the next time I will play it. And from that last run, I don´t want to play it. It just seems silly to me. Instead of playing and going deeper and eventually die, at my given state, it is better to die at the top. I have to commit suicide and starve to death.

Another dark game that you cant see shit. And this stupid lantern idea, that requires repetitive grind to retrieve it so you can continue main story. No thanks.
Fair review. But for me personaly this game felt like a 10/10 due to how rewarding the gaming experience was.
Dropping the lantern mechanics is literally game breaking. If you die in an area that is already hard (like level 17-18) and lose it - you have to play it again being even harder. The game literally punishes you for exploration that supposed to be its core mechanics. Shame, it could have been a classics - ends up being something you'll dislike for wasting your time.
That part worries me as well.

GForceIntel I died when I was rushing only idk how people die when you can block......the lantern isn’t even needed I only use it when I absolutely cannot see or have to open something
the difficulty spikes from a certain point... the first half of the game is really chill and nice but after that the game puts the lube away

what does that even mean ? Indie games are as important as triple A games. Many of them are even more polished experience than big budget ones.
@@terencecaron2922 it means I'll spend my money as I please. Microsoft felt this was worth putting on game pass so I'm playing it there.besidds being on game pass may have put the game in the hands of player's who would have passed on it .

But everyone is going to die at some point , I just don’t like being put to the start of the game , I like progression , I like to be immersed into a game , I don’t want my immersion broken , which this game does when you die and get placed back to the start .nothing to do with being good or bad , I’m actually very good at these types of games .
