    I adore this review. I love how you understand reviews as communicating others how you related with the game, instead of pointless attempt at "objectivity" (a frankly impossible task). This was truly exceptional :)

    I'll be honest, difficulty has always been a big pull for me, when people told me about games like hollow knight and enter the gungon and how hard they were it made me even more excited. But with games like those it always felt fair, it felt like dieing was part of the experience and by doing so you learnt more and more about the enemy! But when I played below it felt like it was disappointed in you dieing and by wandering around trying to find you body it was punishing you! I honestly agree with your review!

    Feel like your talking about rain world, both look pretty good but you have to cope with a lots to enjoy the game. Funny that's it's exactly my type of game.

    well that's a real let down. I was looking forward to unravelling the mysteries in this game but if it's just a test of patience and awareness with mood lighting then I'll pass. The thing about Dark Souls and Bloodborne is that it's tough as nails paired within a finely crafted world and lets you try different methods of play. A game that makes you play one way isn't a game. It's a chore.

    I really enjoyed the game (and it's difficulty) up until the major game shift that happens around level 14. After running to level 18, dying, dying again on subsequent attempt, and realizing that getting back to the torch was going to take an hour per attempt, I put the game down. It's.. brutal. I really wanted to enjoy it too.

    That is a bit harsh review. I could feel anger. Below is a great game. It does not differ from Ashen or Dark Souls in its gameplay's mechanics but is much more magical and actually easier. If you ask me did I finish the game my answer is no. But I did not finish DS or Ashen either.

    Gamers: Companies should stop making games as products sold to everyone for maximum profits and start creating artistic games born from the passion of developers.
    Also gamers: Games should be made for everyone.

    just recently stumbled upon your channel. great review, love the focus on indie games. there are already enough channels that do redundant tests of AAA games.
    regarding Below, as someone who plays shmups and arcade genres I usually like difficult games but the gameplay doesn't seem to be that well thought through. loved Cuphead for example which design was really excellent.

  • @Iggsy81
    @Iggsy81 5 лет назад +24

    This game was such a disappointment to me. Perfect art style, atmosphere, music, and then just ruined by some ridiculous gameplay decisions that make no sense. Such a shame.

    • @aspizak
      @aspizak 5 лет назад +5

      @@GetIndieGaming that + dropping your lantern. The grind for crafting becomes silly if you have to go back so many levels back to find materials. All that in an inventory that's tiny.

  • @aspizak
    @aspizak 5 лет назад +7

    Agreed. Some key decisions in the game design are just bad. Not hard, not clever. It's a fun game, looks great - then they got confused if they want to make an exploration game, adventure game - the combat is simplistic and feels like hardcore Zelda and that's also ok. The dropping lantern and heavy grind will get to you around 14-17 deep. It's such a shame. After 14-16hrs i felt i was wasting time and stopped enjoying it.
    In a way Dead Cells does a lot of similar things - all way way better. It's hardcore - yet accessible. It's repetitive - yet each run offers rewards and even deaths are fine when you feel you made some progress. It gives you a fair chance to finish it and feel satisfied, yet you can also go for more boss cells and go real hardcore. All these design decisions are missing from Below. I almost feel that Below should have been early access and many of these things would have been fixed/solved. Dead Cells, in the beginning, was also harder and had some issues.

  • @pixlman
    @pixlman 5 лет назад +2

    I do agree on the repetition, but personally I just found it boring, not frustrating. Even so, I am happy that a developer is not willing to compromise his vision for a game. As much help as the Celeste accessibility options are, they undeniably dampen the intended experience.

    • @michaellarrosa2657
      @michaellarrosa2657 5 лет назад +3

      But it is optional, if you want to try the intended experience, you just have to disable the accessibility option. I agree with you on the matter of the developers staying true to their vision, but I don't think that Celeste it's a good example to make your point.

  • @themaninthehat1000
    @themaninthehat1000 5 лет назад +4

    I see no problem with making a difficult game and marketing it as such. The developers are targeting a niche market who like this sort of challenge. Not every game needs to be for everyone. The devs had a vision for their game and set the difficulty to match the way their game is meant to be played. If people don’t like hard games then they won’t play it if they do then they will. It’s like if a game markets itself as a puzzle game but there are a lot of people who don’t like puzzle games the devs are losing a lot of money because there game isn’t for everyone. If the game is hard and they market it as a more casual game then I would have a problem.

    • @noahbobrow
      @noahbobrow 5 лет назад +2

      noogets I think he takes issue with some of these things because the review is coming from the perspective of someone who really cares about Indy games and their developers, so it annoys him that something that took so long to develop has manufactured such a niche market for itself, possibly crippling further projects.

    • @themaninthehat1000
      @themaninthehat1000 5 лет назад +3

      @@noahbobrow That's a good way to look at it. Although I do think there is a healthy albeit niche market out there for difficult games. Using the example everyone uses, if you look at the Dark Souls series, it sold incredibly well and its a hard game which is part of its appeal. The indie game "Getting Over It" sold well because it was so difficult and successfully capitalized on the market of people who like a difficult challenge. The devs of Below know the difficult game audience is large enough to capitalize on and I think it can be a good marketing angle to take. Based on this review I think the problem is that Below isn't a very good game to start with which makes the difficulty unappealing. If Below was an amazing game I'm sure it would have sold well despite being marketed as difficult.

    • @pizdamatii5001
      @pizdamatii5001 5 лет назад

      +noogets i think it's not just about the difficulty, but also about the penalty for failure. i'm fine with dying 30 times to artorias on sl1 before beating him, cause it takes 20 seconds to run back to the boss fog, but if i were to die in 'below' and then had to grind for an hour to get back to where i was...well that simply doesn't sound like fun to me at all!

    • @themaninthehat1000
      @themaninthehat1000 5 лет назад +2

      @@pizdamatii5001 For sure, you can have games that are difficult with good design, or games that are a difficult with bad design. Seems like Below falls into the camp of difficult with bad design which is too bad. My point is that in the video he says he doesn't like it when games are marketed for their difficulty and have no option to make the game more accessible but I don't see a problem with it since there is an audience for hard games and the devs should make a game in their vision. If Below was difficult and good it would have sold well, but since its difficult and not so good it hasn't sold very well. I would condemn Below for having bad design but not for being difficult. For a lot of people a game being difficult is a strong selling point

    Just started playing last night and I'm definitely not enjoying it as much as I hoped. I love the atmosphere but something about the gameplay just doesn't work for me. The permadeath mechanic is fun in a way, as it raises the stakes, but the instant kills take away from it. I also think the zoomed out camera is not a good choice for a dungeon crawler. It works in the beginning when you are outdoors (I thought the intro segment was gorgeous), but as soon as you enter the cave you cant see anything on the edges anyways, so why zoom out so much? Still, I'm going to give it another shot because I loved Swords & Sorcery. Maybe you have be in a certain headspace for this game.

  • @loohole81
    @loohole81 5 лет назад +4

    Below's gameplay traits remind me of old ZX Spetrum and Amiga games. With trail and error gameplay, repetitive gameplay and hard and sometimes cheap difficultly. Gaming from a different time, I remember when that was all the norm. Below's aesthetics are very modern but it's game design has alot to do with the past.

    I wanna see more reviews. This is a good perspective on the games accessibility. I wonder, what motivated the developers to invest so many resources on a game that they expected to be nich/future cult-classic? It's pretty rare for such a singularly minded project to be given this much attention.

    • @hcohic9884
      @hcohic9884 5 лет назад +2

      well i guess they were banking on the mysterious atmosphere and the thrill of the unknown and what lies ahead its good for the intro of a game but clearly its not enough to keep players hooked all the way without any story line or interaction

    I mean I'd get why someone would make a game like this. If I were ever to make a game of my own I'd go with a single difficulty because that'd be the way my game was meant to be played and I know not everyone would be into it but I myself don't expect every game out there to cater to me either. The problem I see nowadays is developers trying to cater to as big of an audience as possible which in turn makes the games feel too homogeneous and grey, yeah everyone is able to play them but the moments you get to experience within the game are far less memorable (talking about non-scripted moments). Dark Souls did the difficulty thing so well, even though it is an over-all ''hard'' game you still get to tweak the difficulty with you weapon choice... I started out with a sword and a shield but at the end it felt too easy so switching to a longsword with parrying/dodging upped the difficulty for me and mastering that felt so satisfying. I believe not everything is for everyone in this world, if it was, a lot of stuff wouldn't be that special and video games illustrate it nicely. That's my take on it anyways

    this game has such a wasted potential. It could be awesome. In the beginning, i was really excited to explore everything, do everything carefully. It´s OK to be hard, even in the explore mode, but it takes too long to go back to where you died before. I started to get angry to do that all over again. The loading screens are a pain in the ass. But the tentacles caves is where the game lost me: many levels of the same shit, you cant enjoy it, you need to run without thinking, being attack all the time and the game gives you zero motivation to go back there once you die. Don´t get me wrong, I´d never have bought it without explore mode. I bought this game after they released the explore mode, which I though could be easier and accessible to most players, but the developers could´t calibrate the difficulty. Even in explore mode, the game is hard and annoying. Too bad, cause the atmosphere of the game is awesome, but i´ll never touch it again.

    well a puzzle survival game is just not enough what i mean is survival like a hunger bar or a hp bar should be part of many types of games but not the main theme of the game same can be said about puzzle solving which can be used in games to unlock shortcuts or abilities or new story paths but just walking endlessly collecting loot and solving puzzle after puzzle with no context will definitely get boring real quick
