This game gets better the deeper you go. I love that there's no tutorials. If you can't handle figuring things out with trial and error, this might not be for you. If you pass on this game, you're missing out on an absolute gem.
I am with you, the hunger rate is a bit too much and too frequent
Ashen and Below coming out of the blue and a week apart from each other? I'm thrilled as I've been following these 2 for years!
Thanks for putting this together so quick and playing through the night. I watched your Ashen preview as well, which helped me to decide to pull the trigger on it.
The game is beautiful, AND great if you understand a few mechanics better. I enjoyed it tremendously. In your case, you simply haven't understood certain mechanics, so you've had a hard time.
Here's some help/guidelines in order to actually enjoy the game :
1) Use the lantern's long light regularly. It spots the insta-death traps with RED around, and disperses the fog. If you attack nearing the traps, they trigger without hurting you.
2) If you die/lose the lantern, it will be displayed on the map ( just press tab ). The room where you lost it will be displayed with RED on the map.
3) Stack up on +++ stew. It contains 3x meat + water. Or water + mushrom + 2x meat. Stew simply fills you up, so use it when you're low.
4) Move fast. Time is of the essence. If you stay around and just stare at stuff, do it only in places where you see that your food & water have a LOCK sign on them. That's where they're not affected.
5) After level 16 , get the dark helmet from the shop in the city ( lev 8 I think ). It very slowly decreases your life, but you are a TON more resistant to darkness tongues ( you'll see what I mean ). Also, fight those like you'd fight regular enemies, you need a bit of style, but it's very doable.
6) Use the spear for fishing and then leave it back into the ZZZ camp ( you discover the ZZZ option at the 3rd campfire and after). If you die, go back to the ZZZ and get the spear, fish a bit, stack up on stews, put the spear back and re-go. It takes me ~10 minutes after I die ( although after finishing the game once I finished it again without death ) to fill up on 3-4 potions and some +patches, then I'm ready to go.
Thumbs up if this helps :) . Cheers !
Hunger mechanic is way too short! But I've adjusted my plans for it & will slay anything for sustenance even if it is a dog. But wow other than that I'm finding it utterly enchanting in a morose kind of way. Between Ashen & Below ive been completely swept up by them even tho they weren't really games ive been looking forward to.
Urotsukidoji. 🍺
ye Ashen and this is great!!!
@Rand, food tip: turn off your torch or lantern and wait for the Bats to get to you then slash them until they all drop dead. Most of them will get you food. Once I found that, it has made starvation way less anoying.
I’m loving it. Although I’m going hungry and haven’t even scratched the surface yet. Death number 1. Lol
It's all about crafting better food. Hunger and thirst aren't a problem once you learn different recipes. I currently have more than enough food and water and never feel like it's hard to maintain
Love the game, minus the hunger mechanic. For those of you on PC, are you able to change your key bindings? I'm unable to edit them. Is this by design? Thanks!!
Me: Exploration? Atmospheric? Very interested!
Game: Roguelike! Crafting! Survival!
Me: No longer interested whatsoever.
The one-shot trap is just cheap. Cheap, lazy design choice.
The worst thing is they just make you want to rush more to get back to your skeleton, which makes you more likely to run into one again.
Or... It's too good... So good in fact, it makes you look cheap for crying like a little girl.
I keep checking back... I need to know if you were able to get your lantern back and continue!!!
Honestly might pick this up. This does look really fun. Also thinking about playing Ashen.
How do you think it stacks up with Dont Starve ? It has the same basic mechanics of exploration, survival and crafting coupled with perma-death. Beautiful art. But that game annoys me so much. I am constantly on edge. Do I have enough to eat ? Do I have enough to burn ?
I'm really looking forward to playing this as a veteran of Rogue, Hack, Nethack and Larn which I played at Uni in the 80s and still play from time to time on a VM on my laptop. Let's see if some of the old tricks made it into the game...Is there an amulet of Yendor at the bottom of the dungeon I wonder...
How do I upgrade my Pocket?
How often I run out of Inventory space is Outrageous.
Great impression of the game I just started love the soundtrack and ambience of the game but sounds like you have quirks like I do and I'm going to get frustrated as well with survival aspect of game it's the one thing that kept me from loving state of decay2 got tired of running out of resources
I’m not 100% sure yet, but maybe you need to get the key( stone with marking on it) all the way to the left in level 3 and take it all the way right to open up the shortcut.
I have this on PC I hope they add in a hard mode with out a invisible wall around all the crevices
Even though the hunger sounds frustrating, this game looks like exactly what I've been missing lately.
Hey Rand - did you get to Level 19 from the shortcut on 3-18-19 or did you get through 3 then 4 then 5 etc to 19?
I got to level 19 through a shortcut
Ok cool, same here. Not even sure if there is a level 5, level 4 is just brutal...
I cant change the keyboard keys...i am left handed so WASD is very bad for direction...and it's strange you cant change that like other games....i tried but i cant...so i need to refund ;-(....other tried or found out to change it ?
Great review. Thanks for saving me $22. I got a Steam refund. I didn't bother to fire up the game myself. I blind purchased thew game because I had been looking forward to it since the initial announcement. I share your pet peeves, and because of my media blackout. I had no idea Below had these issues... Bullet dodged.. too many great, fun games to play ATM. I have no desire to be frustrated for the sake of being frustrated with a video game. I'll pick this up during a Steam sale down the line.
Your loss
Rand can you do a review for Rime? It really deserve a review, I know it's an old game but still...
Aiden I am rime right now and absolutely love it
I was shouting from the rooftops about Rime when it came out. Gonna play through it again soon.
@@nitras.design It's one of the best games I have every played, the story, music and the art are amazing
@@OminoJakoom1 Yeah dude Rime such an amazing game I will play it again in the near future
I have a review up on the channel already for Rime. Love that game!
Started playing tonight and I've had a similar issue with the lantern. I'm trying to retrieve it from the 4th floor but the door I went through to get there is now shut. I've looked everywhere and there's no other way round without the lantern
I'm starting to think this is a common issue.
@@darrellharwood6600 I restarted the game and it hasn't happened since. I'm quite far into the game now too (I think) maybe they patched it
@@jaewon679 thank you!
I believe the layout of rooms are randomly generated but their placement and order seems to be the same.
The hunger/thirst mechanic really ruins this for me
Yeah i hate to be pressured by time too ,especially when you want explore
I have yet for it to be an issue in the game. Bats, fish, foxes provide plenty of meat and there’s enough potato’s and radishes. Same with water sources.
@@AEGISDEFENSE agree i really love the chalenging game such as below its hard but its fun also finding shortcuts, gathering materials, food and water, and of course the combat style i really loves that. I never been frustated bcause of the game is to hard or food and water supplies or bla bla bla. Buy below and play it, I really recomend it to people who likes hardcore games
i also recommended ori and the blind forest, hollow knight, child of light, dead space. Play it the games i pick is really good
I'm a big fan of Don't Starve so I'm fine with the survival and light crafting elements but they need to slow that hunger meter down at least a minute or two.
I don't feel that the hunger mechanic is bad (so far, I've only logged about 5hrs into the game). It impresses an urgency upon me while I'm playing and I feel the game would be too easy if it wasn't there. Crafting is fine, no problems with that either. I suppose those complaints are of a game genre rather than with the game itself.
This looks to be a great game on the go! Ashen too!😩👍
Ohh Damm Rand this quick lol anyways was thinking to hit tht Gamepass for 1$ no harm 😛
looks pretty good but that hunger mechanic also puts me off. I sympathise with your potentially game breaking scenario, it would be enough to exhaust my enthusiasm as well.
So the sense of scale, the exploration and the art style is all lovely.
It's a damn shame the gameplay just isn't up to snuff in terms of propping the game up on its own.
However, the main problem is the survival mechanics which mar these elements. Level 4-6 (the last of which is where I died for the first time) starts showing the issues, specifically the food scarcity. Water is actually super easy to get, but the food and temperature issue is super frustrating (I may be mistaken, but torches don't even aid in giving you heat).
It doesn't help that resources can be procedurally generated too, meaning sometimes you'll find food in a certain place and other times you'll have no luck.
I think the main thing is that the lack of a story really makes it a rather unfulfilling experience. I'm not asking for Citizen Kane, but something basic (think Dark Souls, Journey etc) would definitely make it more interesting as you continue. At this point, I doubt reaching the bottom of the cavern (and thus the end of the game) will even be worth it.
It feels like the developers added the rather inflexible mechanics for the sake of dragging out the game's run time. Which is a shame, because buried under the fluff, there is a great indie experience here.
In regards to hunger, its best to craft food in to potions, then you get full health and fills your stomach.
Reminds me of Record of Lodoss War on Dreamcast.
You dance the sword well sheepherder...
I have game pass so I'll try this game but I pretty much heard everything I need to know. By the way I cannot stand it when I encounter a spot in a game where I'm torn between "is this a game-breaking bug" or "am I just stupid". Either way it's bad game design.
Sometimes, I forget it's Rand and think I'm listening to Dealer! Very similar voices!
Great video. Thanks for the insight on this game. Looks cool but I will not be playing it.
does permadeath mean you have to complete the game in one sitting?
No... a new character will always show up
the tone of your voice for the first couple min told me all I needed to know. least it's super cheap in game pass. that's the most type of games we will get in game pass from their new studios. would be a good name for their studios - "meh games"
on 8 hours myself, died 2 times to spike traps right on the start and I still have the same guy, but yeah sure farm them bats and snakes for food, cook some and you'll be fine.
you and dealer and colt do great work. love you guys!
Colt and Dealer? Those two racists clown don't deserve to be on RUclips.
Colt and dealer? Lol plz "love you guys" smh.
Rand does good work. Colt and dealer are little more than fanboy propagandists. It's an insult to include rands good work with those 2.
toppdogg2k17 "clown" Ironic in every podcast 😬
How are they racist?
I disagree about the survival mechanics. The game is very generous with food and you can get water from puddle in almost every other room. Getting stuck and running out of light is the only problem I have.
Darn, i had identical issues with 'DARKWOOD' that game is fucking fantastic but it has survival crafting on top of traditional survival horror, totally ruined it for me.
So it´s basically walking simulator to the center of Earth?
@@Lyubomir.K Hmmm, good question! Maybe it´s hiding simulator?
This game sounds like Don't Starve with the permadeath and starving. I might download it through game pass.
very good impressions!!! same to me, i am stuck in a hard part of the game!! chekcpoint is too far and the tantacles is insane!!! hate
Ok I can't see the traps!!! I've waltzed into 3 in a row. Three new adventurers finding the remains of the previous one & sleepwalking into a spiky trap within seconds of finding gear!.I'm blind at the best of times but my ability in this department is even more handicapped due to the traps being hidden in lush animated grass in serious darkness. So now it's food & torches that I need to have available at all times.... god help me.
Yeah just couldn’t get into this. I really liked the vibe and art style but it’s far too cryptic. I played for a fair while and nothing really seemed to change. And I feel sorry for anyone on a small tv. Too small, too dark, too frustrating.
I remember this game, you need a magnifying glass just to play it, because the characters are too damn small.
U remember this game, as it came out today?
ChiefNaggleVIII lol
You wish you had a zl1 1le dipshit!
@@ChiefNaggleVIII its 5 years late (initially slated to come out in 2013). He's probably referring to one of the initial launch trailers from back then.
The camera's perspective is so far out i can't navigate the damn map,(caves, steps, enemies, traps),without pressing my nose up against my display monitor..
It would've been far better, if there was a, 'zoom in', option.
That said, the music is good,I just don't have the patience to commit myself to such a game.
it looks like screensaver :D
Damn Rand you deserve a 1000G just for playing this for 10hrs. I dont know how you play these games for so long. Props to you man, I personally cant play these type of games.
This is an amazing game. Not to difficult to play if you ask me
It’s very easy to get lost in this game.
Its not everyone's taste, but if it is, its an amazing entry in the survival rougelike genre. Well worth the wait
The beginning cutscene kinda already put a sour taste in my mouth... I was like... Wtf is this a cutscene or isnt it? 10 minute wait and lousy payoff. Its like they factored in steams 2hr play limit for returns when they designed the start.
Maybe you just have adhd. I suggest fortnight
Its easier to kill people through a survival mechanic than it is to through a fair but challenging combat mechanic so I can see why with limited resources they went with the former. Game looks like something I would enjoy from an exploration and artistic standpoint but likewise I have yet to find a survival mechanic or durability mechanic that feels anything more than a chore so ill skip for now since I have a ridiculous amount of other stuff to play.
first! love your channel Rand!
I waited 5 years a fulll console generation for this game. So far, it is exceeding my expectations and I am completely in Love with the Game. Played 6 hours straight and would still be playing it if I didn't have to eat. Still early in the game, but contender for my game of the year. Yes, ahead of Red Dead Redemption.
i only played 30 min but it's so beautiful
You die from hunger lol wait till you get to floor 14. Then tell me how you die haha.
There is so much food in this game you can have a full inventory the whole way through.
Once you discover the pocket and stash everything
Just intentionally die near the surface over and over and keep putting the bottles the game starts you with in the pocket on your 4-5 life you have so many bottles you can carry as many elixers as you need. The dark hood makes floors 14+ easier.
I actually found the hunger and thirst and crafting really enjoyable.
What pissed me off was the screen tearing and slow down when too much is on screen.
The ending was a bit boring though, good concept just looked sloppy.
The tech dungeons were cool but annoying and finding every piece of the lantern was a real grind at times.
Another bad thing was the game autosaves at the start of EVERY room so if you take a lot of damage and start bleeding just hit start go back to main menu and resume the game and you start at the beginning of the room you were in, very very safe scummy but it helped lol.
Exactly how I imagined. Slow paced exploration with no story, no point, with dark hard to see environment and hunger mechanic...Not for me. Thanks for the review!
Easy 1000g?
Maybe... not sure
I want to play this without death and starvation so i can just see what they made. I don't play games with time limits.
Then don't play roguelikes
@@dbrn84 Lost the interest when I found out the levels were randomly generated anyway. You can keep it!
@@hibernative actually I've been playing the game for a couple of days and died 3 times. I managed to reach -20 and food has never been a problem for me. You can slay and butcher rats and other critters. Eat only when you need it, going around with a full stomach is not mandatory. The game has awesome things to discover, and I am pretty sure you will love it. Most of the levels are randomly generated, but some rooms are standard as they are needed to advance in the storyline. Give it another try, this game is a gem.
Indie games like below are not my bag..
Yeah, I was enjoying it as well until I died in level 3 ice area. And now I cant get past the door to get to my body in level 3 because I no longer have the lantern. So frustrating! I waited 5 years for this game. Such a let down. I hope it gets patched. Game breaking.
Not good. Rand got stuck at the door for lvl 19. I don't want to buy this if these things are permanent bugs, or if there's a way around somehow...
Is this a SEGA Genesis game ?
This game is absolutely beautifully
You should review G R I S!
is that on xbox or pc only?
@@CC42_ It's definitely on PC and Nintendo Switch, not 100% sure about Xbox
@@ck9047 switch? nice!
what is GRIS?
@@RandalThor19 check out skill ups review for it
Survival and crafting are the two things I hate the most in games, they're more work than fun, so... no Below for me.
Andrea Taroni same for me. I don’t enjoy those mechanics. I play games to explore levels and stories.
Game has no tutorial, i died instantly because of starvation, and had to start from the beginning, its just terrible design.
nah i love the game had no problem with no tutorials
Terrible design cause you can't figure it out without being told? Must be
Idiot game developers need to throw in the garbage the modern paradigms of what they THINK makes for good games, go back and spend a few weeks with Super Mario World, and then begin to make games. Devs these days have completely forgotten what makes for good gaming.
@@Lyubomir.K
Nope, I'm 39. I remember when gaming used to be great. Ahhh, I miss my Atari 2600.
I'll pass on this, I love artsy Indie games but hell no to survival games, not fun.
I’m downloading sunset overdrive first time playing it, also playing horizon zero dawn again :) and downloading uncharted lost legacy.
You need to play Red Dead Redemption 2... it blows them all away!
I wasnt expecting to like horizon as much as I did. When You first find your focus and you are wandering through the catacombs listening to those audio logs of the people that died down there, it got me super intrigued. In the end I loved it. I mean, you get to kill robot dinosaurs.
Shane Fullerton the game is a amazing experience.
STACY BURK I’m not a fan of red dead.
@@crossfitwarrior3577 because it looks better on Xbox one x. Stupid sony pony!
Is it even healthy to play for 10 hours straight. I like video games but deam bro i have shit to do. 🤣
I upvote video, but downvote the game. Too dark, too slow, too tiny models, with emphasis on survival mechanics (which i also hate in games) and this stupid retrieving lantern idea. Meh. I was expecting isometric Souls, this is not.
well, thanks.... this game is not for me. this game belongs a wii
You lost me at no story...*sigh*
looks shite to me
game is very boring far as I've seen.
no its not. I recommend it to people that really like hardcore games
Your complaining about survival and crafting?? Dude then dont play this genre...I hate sports games, you dont see me making sports game reviews,
*you're
yawn
I'm going to pass on this one.
Looks like it is boring to play. Character seems to move like molasses. No wonder it is being given away free on Game Pass.
Sounds to me like you don't like it because you aren't good at it... That's ok, everyone grows up eventually.
Rand stop deleting comments...this game is trash, boring, waste of time
I haven't deleted any coments
Please stop with the over dramatic music.
Boring, boring and boring. Don't love this game.
