Yeah I was obsessed with the idea that there are now so many things that could exist everywhere, behind puzzles and secrets, and every time that colorful visual would play it was a huge hit of dopamine. Made you feel like a genius, and the idea that you had the power to do so many things but didn't quite know how to was crazy, and thinking "Whoa, how did I not notice that?" or "Wait I could have done that the whole time?" never gets old.

Yeah, year later and ima be real, this was a really weird and dispiriting way to approach the whole Holy Cross thing, which IMO was brilliant
Also, Mort, you probably should have dropped that behind a HEAVY spoiler warning, as the whole point of the Holy Cross is to gate progression behind player knowledge

Yeah I enjoyed it too! Was not on par with the rest of the game imo, but was like a whole seperate minigame. I think Tunic might be my favourite game ever, especially for the golden path riddle. If you havent played the Witness, you'll love it if you enjoyed the post game of tunic!

Easily one of my favorite games of all time! Even after 100 hours on it, I still come back every once in a while to re-experience the magic. What it does sets it apart from most other games I’ve played - I can’t get into it much for spoiler reasons but what I can say is, it contains my absolute favorite soundtrack in any game, blew my expectations out of the water especially in the later parts of the game, and made me re-evaluate game design as a whole.

  • @ersia87

I don't know if I'm dumb here, but the puzzles in Tunic are some of the most unique I'v ever experienced. Sure purely mechanically they are repetetive, but discovering them and realizing there's a puzzle there at all it part of the process. And that process is different for each puzzle and I would say makes Tunic unique.
Then of course, some people might not realize how many and how grand the hidden puzzles get and might never experience them.
I finished the game without solving the biggest puzzle of all. I'm doing it now though. It is brain bending to think there's even such a puzzle in any game at all. It's truly unique.

It does a good job emulating what it was like playing games as a kid, not understanding the language. Elden Ring too revived some of that sense of wonder that's been lost over the years, simply by having so little hand holding.
To me it confirms that modern video game development focus way too much on having everything be immediately understandable. Quest markers pointing exactly where to go. Tutorials that take away absolutely all the mystery of figuring shit out yourself.

Another great review Mortym! Thanks so much for the fresh new content every day! It is nice to have a short game to 100%. Right now, I have a logjam of games still yet to 100% that will take dozens if not hundreds of hours each to 100%. On its own I would play it, but it is doubtful it can get into the 100% queue which is already packed with 76 games in my Steam Library ahead of it :) The nice thing is, for all those 76 games, there are videos for all of them in your channel, which is fantastic! The biggest challenge is to choose which game to 100% next?

  • @DanOfTheHill
    @DanOfTheHill Год назад +10

I simply don't see a problem paying $30 or even $60 for a shorter game if that playtime is dense, which, in the case of Tunic, I would say is the case. Most long games in my experience have just been loaded with padding.

This game recently came up on playstation plus for free and I needed a break from Helldivers 2. I'm probably only three hours in maybe more. Maybe some will not agree but I love the fact everything feels rewarding Because you start off with no information. Starting off not knowing what any items do or what your progression should be. You find more information and piece it together and you get that "Eureka" moment so many times. Again and I am just getting started! Judging by a lot of the comments this holds a special place in many people's hearts. I feel truly blessed I get to experience this for the first time.

I enjoyed it, got all the pages and the good ending but didn't bother with every puzzle. Have always love the early SNES Zelda games like Link to The Past so really liked this game even if some of the final puzzles were a bit of a chore. Would recommend to any Zelda gamer as I would Deaths Door which is similar.

Loved your review. Got to say I enjoyed the game up to a point. Sense of exploration and discovery around the world is great but the combat is simplistic and it makes some of the bosses a bit of a pain. As you say, once I completed it I didn't feel the need to complete all the puzzles for the true ending - didn't even realise the puzzles existed until really late on!

Nice review as always. The game is enjoyable and cute, there's no denying. But as for the playtime, I'd say normal player would probably lean more on the 12-14h. Not that longer than your 10h, but still à 20% increase at least, so I guess it's worth noting :)

I absolutely adore cute things with a dark tone.
Its like horror comedy, it shouldn't work, you'd think one would ruin the other, but it really does work well.
But since it seems to be primarily a puzzle game its not one for me sadly. Shame, I really like the look of it.

I got it a couple weeks ago and I'm loving it. Admittedly, there were a lot of puzzles that I really only figured out what I WOULD need to do to get the solution, and then saved myself the trouble and just looked it up. That said, the process of figuring out how to solve some of the puzzles was still really satisfying.
This game also seems really well suited to multiple playthroughs, since starting a fresh file after you already know everything gives a lot of possible approaches to change up the experience, and it comes with a new game plus so you can start out with end game equipment if you really want to.

I got the game "for free" through PS store monthly games. I like the game and it took me more than 10h to figure it out. The early game puzzles were cool and I really loved the game.
I didnt like the game so much anymore so much in the late game with all this dark content - i dont understand why every souls game, even with a little fox hero - must always be so dark and sad.
The end game puzzles however, especially the fairy ones, were just stupid hard. Thanks god you can just look it up online.

I love the fact that you do reviews after 100 percent. I think this or a system in which journalists are not aloud to review a game at least until it's out like 3 weeks is necessairy. Impressions can change so much within a playthrough. Take Elden Ring. First 10 hours I loved it , but it felt a bit underwhelming. After that I started thinking it's great and loved it. 75% in the game it started to annoy me a bit, feeling like the difficulty spike went a bit too far with end game bosses and I was dependent on my mimic tear. And 2,3 days after finishing it and letting everything set in I realised that with all it's issues it's an absolute masterpiece and the good stuff in it just overshines the bad stuff by miles. So 4 different impressions throughout my journey. If I would have reviewed it at anytime before being completely done with the game and letting things set in , I would have not given my actual opinion , and I would have done this without even knowing

After seeing your video, I remembered playing some sort of demo, at some point. It was kind of "meh," imo. Not that it's bad, but time spent in any game is time not spent in a better game, given most people's limited gaming time. As a result, I find that there are a lot of" OK" games like this that I'll never play; way too many better games out there that I struggle to find time for.
