    What is the secret legend? What is the story of tunic? This is part one of a new game theory series that will take a deep-dive into the lore of Tunic. I'm trying a different style of video this time for my Tunic lore theories. This is one of a bunch of game theories floating in my head about Tunic secrets. Join the new discord and we can chat more about Tunic and other story and puzzle games.

      Shout-out to Phantasy Star IV, the only RPG I've ever played where if you try to inspect dressers, etc. in someone's home, the main character says “it's rude to go through other people's things.”

    This conclusion depends on how we understand the relation of the waking-world to the dream-world.
    If you open a treasure chest while in the dreamworld, it will be opened in the waking-world. This opens the possibility that some ruin seekers such as yourself have plundered the shop across dimensions. No general liability insurance for retail shops is gonna cover that.

    • @JessZakilly
      @JessZakilly  2 года назад +14

      So true. You’ve got my wheels going though. I do think we’re the first to make it to the dream world, solely based on the fact that we’re the first to open the Heir’s prison (other ghosts imply this).

    • @LostWaymaker
      @LostWaymaker 2 года назад +20

      That’s a valid point, but doesn’t explain why the ghosts are surprised that it’s been unlocked. The pages seem to be the only thing able to escape the cycle, also the only thing we find both in canonical plane and far shore.

    Hmm, I’m not sure I’d say that this shopkeeper is the saddest aspect of the game, but it’s a pretty sad aspect. I would maybe give that honor to the Heir (even though they can have a happy ending if you play to the good ending).
    Tunic is one of the best games I’ve played in a while. Pouring over tha manual to figure out what was going on was wonderful and never has a game made me want to have a notebook handy. I loved figuring out all the Holy Cross puzzles!
    I also loved this video. Keep up the great work. You have a subscriber!

    • @JessZakilly
      @JessZakilly  2 года назад +5

      Very true! Maybe the Heir’s story is sadder, but I think the resignation speaks volumes too (I may be biased though, I love a good side-NPC). I think my favorite part about Tunic and why it works so well are definitely the layers that get peeled back as you get deeper and deeper. If one is lucky enough to go in blind, they have no idea the ride they’re in for with this game! Glad to have you here, GEM!

    • @GEMGaming_yt

      @@JessZakilly With the exception of some of the more obtuse puzzles, I did go in totally blind. I loved the *mind blown* moments the game gives you. Incredible video. You've framed this wonderful game in a new way from a perspective usually discarded, even by those who could discern the cyptic cuneiform-esque language of the world. It's easy to forget that, in the logic of the world, these simple NPCs lived here once, and are powerless to the many cycles of destruction that exist in the world. Only watching, not even in horror, not anymore, as we make another revolution on the well-trodden ground of a false hero's journey.
    You captured that complicated emotional landscape wonderfully. Thank you!

    Definitely an interesting perspective, I appreciate the video and effort to make! However, The saddest thing for me is the heir, as I've yet to understand how the good ending is even possible.
    When it kills you as seen at 2:00, it drops and sheds tears, as if it didnt want to. And all it takes for it to not happen is to ... well you know.
    BUT HOW!?? Are there not consequences to breaking the loop? Does there not need to be an heir? Why keep up the cycle when seemingly not wanting to? Ive not yet translated the manual, but if the answers arent there, please feel free to share theories.

    I thought this was gonna be way sadder than it was. When my friend told me about this guy's dialogue I just laughed. It seemed like a joke thrown in to make the player go "oh no, I didn't think of that"
    It's not like the dead need their items anymore. What happened to the shopkeeper was just a result of the world leaving the prior era behind.

    I ended up streaming this and was immediately immersed. Going as far as deciphering the language and starting to decipher the book. Yet nothing gave me more joy than to actually be able to talk to the foxes. Yet as I found the shopkeep and deciphered his words I was hit by the realization that you mentioned in this video. I stole from his former shop, his belongings, and contributed to his sadness. I was shaken, upset, just lamenting to myself that I added to the status quo as I picked the last of it clean. Seeing this video after, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who felt this.. Maybe.. just maybe I could do it all again and spare him stealing the last of his memories... maybe something will change.

    It is one thing to steal personal property that a person uses in their day-to-day life, but is it really such a bad thing to deny others what they need in order to extract a profit. Aside from sentimental objects, a true ghost has little need for material things, although there is some justified nostalgia for the role they played and the life they lived.

    Lovely video - love this game and all the theories coming out of it and the interpretations that can come from it.
    Your video style is great, really gentle and mostly well paced, but my one gripe is that the pauses between you speaking are too long. It feels like padding / drawing out the video and it kind of undermines any flow you're attempting to provide - just tightening up some of those gaps would really provide a more satisfying experience. Some long pauses are great to have a moment to reflect on anything, but it was far too frequent in this video.

      We’re just so used to Mr. Beast type in-your-face content.. that when a creator dares to slow down and give an impactful experience, it seems like it’s done with the intention of hitting a certain time-mark for advertisers 🙃
