Love this - short and sweet, to the point. It's extremely cool that you're playing the game live in the interview because it can lead to some organic moments of talking about certain design choices, too. I'm here for this new series.
As mainly a puzzle gamer (+dev) these days, the manual was the core game for me, with the rest of the experience existing mostly to support the discoveries in the manual. It was surprising to hear you hadn't considered asking about the manual at first, glad you ended up getting to it, I find the manual and its secrets to be the most innovative part of Tunic.
I especially like how well the manual incorporates the function of a map. There is no separate map button; to see where you are, you just flip to the right page. It is treated the same as all the other pages, yet it provides a unique function incorporated seamlessly into the design of the manual. There’s something very satisfying about that.
This guy's a fantastic storyteller. It was also great to see his enthusiasm when he got to pull out the (kind of) physical version of the instruction manual.
I am thoroughly impressed by this game. On the surface, Tunic is a Bloodborne-esque Zelda-like game. But, at its core is a meta homage to 90s gaming culture. Thank you for this video.
I heard about TUNIC at its release and I was like “ah, looks like a cute old school Zelda game… but as a Zelda fan, I rather play the real games” My best friend, last week, told me to not underestimate this game, he says that it has really good puzzles and that I should play it without looking at anything on the internet, cause it could ruin everything. So I started by cracking the game to test it, after 1 hour I liked it, so I bought it on steam. I’ve played 35 hours and finished the game at 100% all by myself (few hours has been spent outside of the game to understand some puzzles) And what can I say, it was one of the best journey I’ve ever had in a video game, this game is on my list of games that I’d really like to erase from my memory to be able to fully rediscovering them… I said I’ve liked the game after 1 hour But I totally loved TUNIC after 35 ❤
I think the thing I like the most about Dicey is he is a man who keeps things simple, but does them right, even down to his interview equipment. Good camera, decent lighting in an organized yet natural room, and a studio quality microphone with the gain adjusted so we can hear him even when he's soft-spoken. This man is something special, and the game he made is going down as one of the greats in history.
You can tell by the way Andrew talks that he’s very focused on making a game that’s simply fun. He’s a guy that’s probably played and analyzed games his whole life and knows all the different aspects that make a game fun and addicting to play. Tunic is the proof of that, phenomenal game! It’s up there for me with Hyper Light Drifter, Fez, and Hollow Knight as some of the best indie games I’ve ever played
"you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention"this is Genius, now I NEED to play this game, the manual, the details explained, im sorry i got spoiled since ive always been curious about this game...
The change from isometric camera to perspective was such a trip after putting many hours into this game and only seeing it as the former. Every other part in here was interesting and entertaining as well. What a way to kick off this series!
Developers ,Artist, Play testers, creators, stunt team, HR, snack guy. Tunic is the best game I have played since Final Fantasy 7 in the PS1. amazing work
Seriously Andrew might be one of the most brilliant and creative indie devs that's out there right now. I really can't wait to see what he works on next.
We got em now ;) Just gotta give em a few years! Still many deeper secrets out there and it seems I'm onto some of them no one else has found. I Havn't had a game get me this amped to pull out the notepad in a loooong time.
This game perfectly captures the feeling of wonder and discovery I had when I was a child playing SNES games that I couldn't read anything, since I didn't know english. Finally understanding some new mechanic was like a puzzle within a puzzle, exactly how I felt as a child. This game is a must-play for anyone, even more if you were a non-english speaker child playing a game in english.
Tunic is the most rewarding game I’ve ever played. A way more complicated ruse the “The Witness”. The revelations were so diverse and meta and organic and fun all at the same time.
GOD I forgot how fucking GOOOOOOD the music is in this game. The composer on this game - Lifeformed - had gone kinda quiet after their legendary Dustforce ost and I was worried we'd never get anything else from them. Everyone should SERIOUSLY check out the Dustforce ost too, it's amazing work music.
When I was young, before I learned English, before the Wii/Xbox 360/PS3 generation and especially until 2000, games weren't available in French in Quebec (or almost never). I remember reading PS1 or GameCube game manuals and trying to scour them for any info I could find about the game world. It was a way for me to build up the anticipation. I still have memos in my Crash Bandicoot manual. It was an uncomparable experience that this game finally allowed me to experience anew.
I love the game design and aesthetic of Tunic. Everything is so thoughtfully crafted and beautifully executed. Listening to Andrew, I see why I love the game. He shares a lot of the same philosophical ideas that I have on what makes something feel intriguing to a player/viewer. Thank you for this interview!
I love this game. Easily my pick for Game of the Year so far, and I think it'll be hard to beat. Great interview. Looking forward to more Developer Breakdowns!
Tunic is one of the best games of the year in 2022. The last puzzle with the door and manual is a masterpiece and very well done. This is remembered for a lifetime!
This game is genius, and the manual is a big reason why. Kudos to the small team that made it happen. I haven't felt this genuine fun in playing a game in a long time.
I love this, having a semi-window into a devs mind and thought process is fascinating. I'll admit I bounced off tunic, but it still massively intrigued me, and this video reminded me I could install it on PC as well as xbox thanks to gamepass and give it another shot!
Don’t be afraid to turn on invincibility in the settings. The puzzles in the back half the game are amazing, but the combat is a huge barrier, and not at all essential to the experience imo.
I’m playing the game right now, and loving it! I think it’s hilarious that the dungeon at 8:00 was to teach us how to use the shield, because I didn’t have it yet, I must have overlooked it.
The first game that I ever really clicked with was ocarina of time and I think playing it before I learned how to read and just trying to understand this extremely cryptic game is what seated my love for games like dark souls and tunic. I love that there’s a ready market now for games that really make you work and think to understand them.
Tunic is a weird masterpiece and it's a superb piece of art. The soothing music, superb art direction and the aura of mystery that permeates throughout make for a very compelling playthrough. This one will age very well, like fine wine. It's timeless. Bought it on day one. Glad I did. I'm replaying it right now. It's just wonderful.
If you read this, the game manual is a masterpiece. I’m not sure if it was intended, but what you accomplished is to make one feel like a kid again that can’t read well or is too lazy to read and only looks at the pictures, because you literally can’t read this manual. This is so unique and cool, because for Thor first time since I was a kid like 25 years ago, I stopped bothering trying to read everything 😂. And the old tv in the background made it so you felt like your sitting I front of it, searching trough the manual. Simply amazing.
That's amazing cause as someone who took years and years to learn English. I'm fre'ch by the way. I though like anybody would understand what morphball is. Especially is English if your mothertongue. But no. And that's crazy but even though I've grew up with French language I keep learning some new words and I don't feel like it's not normal. They're is so many words that you will hear a few times in your life. And even though I can write all of this, doesn't mean thzt I can understand every words or know what they mean in English. Also yeah, the manual made me think too about when you play a hale in Japanese that you imported from there before internet existed
I don't plan to play this game, but this is incredible what he and the team has created! Thank you Noclip Crew for interviewing this amazing game designer!
You should see the other stuff in this game like the music. It's absolutely crazy. There's all this secret stuff done with the music and there's a video and also some tweets from the dev that explain it in depth. It's really hard for me to explain but trust me it's worth looking at if it even somewhat intrigues you
Great video and he's an excellent orator. I did find it funny when he said 'we started with a stamina system like the souls games' before, in an attempt to explain how the combat is different, describes basically exactly the same stamina system that the souls games have.
I continue to love what you guys do with Noclip, the podcast, and now The Crew. I loved this one and have yet to play Tunic but I'm excited for Weird West. Unpacking isn't for me I don't think but I love to find out more about games and the developers.
For all those who enjoyed Tunic I want to ask the question to the dev: Did he know/play "The Lore of Canis" before developing Tunic? It has some similarities, though it was less sophisticated graphical but it had a lot of interactions and possibilities as well as a great world with lot of mysteries inside it. Hope you make more vids like this!
Great Interview. Just finished 100% of the game, and although It has some bad issues with combat, repetitiveness and lack of puzzle communication, It was a good experience overall. Good work.
Such an awesome little game with so many layers and a haunting atmosphere, love it to bits! Low poly it might be but boy does it create an atmosphere for each area. Also the music is godly, many great melodies that keep playing in my head after I put it down -went and bought the soundtrack too!
Just finished the game and really loved the game. Really cool how a single discovery can change how I viewed an interacted with the world around me. The only secrets that I found to not be well laid out were the ones in the cathedral (you know the ones I'm talking about). I never found a hint that such an interaction was possible. Really curious is a sequel would be possible?
I was just looking for a more design focus on Tunic after playing it a bunch recently! By just looking I mean searching for this last night. Can’t wait to watch!
15:30 this made me feel like i was literally in another country, slowly learning their language and being frustrated by not understanding things that a 10 year old would know. I still have my stack of papers i used to decode the language from scratch, and have used the language in my DnD games as an "ancient dead language" the players can decode
I loved when he talked about "cheesing" is a game feature. totally cheesed bosses with that ability card that turns your potions into magic ones and using the gun ;)
I love this game! I really love it. And what Andrew says about "Everything is already there" is so true Ironically I didn't knew how to sprint even though I had played it for 13hours. (My brother bought the came too and I saw him sprinting and wondered "Oh is this part of the game? xD )
Still have not 100% finished as my switch broke, but I believe I was pretty close to the end. Amazing game! Played it as people were saying it's a bit similar to Outer Wilds in terms of mechanics & story discovery and I'd say that's correct.
Let us know what other games you'd like us to cover on Developer breakdown!
(and here's a link to the full interview: www.patreon.com/posts/67516120)
I would love to see a Developer breakdown of Antichamber, Deep Rock Galactic and/or RimWorld.
Fez would be amazing, however unlikely...
Cult of the Lamb 🐑
Tarsier/Little Nightmares or PlayDead/inside, and the history of narrative sidescrollers.
Link no longer works^^
One of the best games I've ever played. It is WAY deeper than it appears on the surface.
it truly is. With writen language translatable, sound language translatable...
It pretends to be Zelda inspired, but it actually is more like Fez
like outerwilds, i love these games that operate on a knowledge system. Metroidvanias where you find secret mechanics instead of only items
Love this - short and sweet, to the point. It's extremely cool that you're playing the game live in the interview because it can lead to some organic moments of talking about certain design choices, too. I'm here for this new series.
Thanks! it comes a lot more in the next two episodes as we get more used to the format

This guy's a fantastic storyteller. It was also great to see his enthusiasm when he got to pull out the (kind of) physical version of the instruction manual.
Andrew is the most chill sounding game developer in existence, he really needs to get his ASMR channel up and running.
I would listen to that man reading a phone book
Agreed. A very good voice
I am thoroughly impressed by this game. On the surface, Tunic is a Bloodborne-esque Zelda-like game. But, at its core is a meta homage to 90s gaming culture. Thank you for this video.
You’re not wrong but at it’s core, it’s way more than just a 90s gaming culture homage.

Genius is a strong word
@@californiafamousTunic is a special game.
@@californiafamousok, "californiafamous"
The change from isometric camera to perspective was such a trip after putting many hours into this game and only seeing it as the former. Every other part in here was interesting and entertaining as well. What a way to kick off this series!
Yeah! I wish there was some cheatcode to enable it myself
Developers ,Artist, Play testers, creators, stunt team, HR, snack guy. Tunic is the best game I have played since Final Fantasy 7 in the PS1. amazing work
That opening graphic is amazing btw
Seriously Andrew might be one of the most brilliant and creative indie devs that's out there right now. I really can't wait to see what he works on next.
This is exactly the type of video I wanted NoClip to do on top of the documentaries. Big fan of this! Keep at it!
This is the most amazingly informative ASMR video I've ever watched! Excellent work as always Danny
We need a physical copy of the manual !!! It will be awesome!!!
We got em now ;)
Just gotta give em a few years! Still many deeper secrets out there and it seems I'm onto some of them no one else has found. I Havn't had a game get me this amped to pull out the notepad in a loooong time.
Just finished Tunic recently and it blew me away in terms of secrets and design. This is fascinating, thanks!
I feel like this guy has a side hustle doing voice-over work for meditation apps.
This game perfectly captures the feeling of wonder and discovery I had when I was a child playing SNES games that I couldn't read anything, since I didn't know english. Fantastic game! I would love to buy a printed version of the manual.
Such a tightly edited, condensed video. Nice work!
I love this Danny! Excited to watch the extended one.
This is great! But I mostly ABSOLUTELY adore the graphics and the style of this video! Well. Done.

One of the best...? No, the best.
I think this deserves to be in the main channel
Maybe after the patreon reward extended version runs it’s course, they may drop it public one day.
This game is genius, and the manual is a big reason why. Kudos to the small team that made it happen. I haven't felt this genuine fun in playing a game in a long time.
Loved Tunic, and loved the interview! Can't wait to see what's more to come from Andrew Shouldice!
Before trying invincibility try different strategies with objects. Some of them kinda feel like cheating but that's on purpose.
You really should. It's incredible. It gets much easier once you get the sword. You can always use bombs against bosses to help you a lot.
I’m playing the game right now, and loving it!
I think it’s hilarious that the dungeon at 8:00 was to teach us how to use the shield, because I didn’t have it yet, I must have overlooked it.

This was fantastic! Great work as always Danny!
The camera reminds me of Landstalker on Genesis back in the 90s. Loved that game :)
I would be interested to see something from level designers of racing games (Trackmania), or tactics games (X-Com, Shadow Tactics).
Andrew and the Tunic team gave me a one of a kind experience with this game. I love it so much!
Tunic is a weird masterpiece and it's a superb piece of art. The soothing music, superb art direction and the aura of mystery that permeates throughout make for a very compelling playthrough. This was a great watch. I’m looking forward to watching more!
Yet another brilliant series begun. Noclip continues to win RUclips
This was great! Love the format & graphics & music, feels very polished. Now I gotta finish Tunic!
perfect vid to watch after completing the game. the exploration and design were amazing!
LOVE THIS FORMAT of content. Bravo! Great pic for kickoff.

One of the games of the year for sure, great interview
Oh, man... This is pure gold! Thank you!
Subscribing on patron just for this extended cut! Thank you!
Thank you for this interview ! Quite interesting
I love these documentaries
@14:00 Body Harvest manual!
Thank you for making this game. Love it on my PS5. Such s great high quality game. You can really feel the passion when you play it.
Just got a physical copy last week. I love it.
Thanks for sharing, this is really enlightening 🙌
He really understands game dev and the gamer's perspective so deeply. No wonder Tunic is amazing
I have been waiting for this
This game looks amazing!
Starting with a bang! This was excellent!
15:30 this made me feel like i was literally in another country, slowly learning their language and being frustrated by not understanding things that a 10 year old would know. I still have my stack of papers i used to decode the language from scratch, and have used the language in my DnD games as an "ancient dead language" the players can decode
Tunic is one of my fav games of all time. Thank you to the devs who made it!!
easily my game of the year even if I hven't finished it yet, thanks for making this video without spoilers
This was sooooo well done and I love hearing about the design breakdown of Tunic. Such a beautiful and well rounded game!
Great content! Love to see more of those
14:18 oh! this place is just like the devworld you can access with the golden path save :O
A dope interview for a dope dev and game! 🔥🔥
Very insightful and interesting. Also this guy has best ASMR voice ever!
Love this, and what a game to start with.
I loved when he talked about "cheesing" is a game feature. totally cheesed bosses with that ability card that turns your potions into magic ones and using the gun ;)
Andrew has a very soothing voice. Can he read me a bedtime story?
If Bob Ross was a game developer. Seriously, awesome interview and definitely will get to Tunic eventually.
Great explanation
"I didn't understand what morphball meant"... He just unlocked a deep memory from my past XD
Fantastic! Loved hearing about the decisions and strategies.
I love this game! I really love it. And what Andrew says about "Everything is already there" is so true
Ironically I didn't knew how to sprint even though I had played it for 13hours. (My brother bought the came too and I saw him sprinting and wondered "Oh is this part of the game? xD )
this is the best shit ive seen in a loong while. Amazing care to detail in this game.
This intro is phenomenal
Completed this game recently, was a lovely experience 🙂
Also, the soundtrack is 🔥
Great new series, looking forward to more. Vampire Survivors might be an interesting one to hear about!
Really enjoying this game. It's a treat.
Still have not 100% finished as my switch broke, but I believe I was pretty close to the end. Amazing game! Played it as people were saying it's a bit similar to Outer Wilds in terms of mechanics & story discovery and I'd say that's correct.
