  • In my previous video, I showed you what it is like to cover NCAA Basketball for a wire service. Now, I am going to go over what kind of settings should be used for Indoor Basketball, since the lighting is usually terrible and difficult to get nice images out of. As a bonus, I go over what camera bodies and lenses you should be using for Indoor Basketball.

    Mr Sanchez .. I don't know if you still get comments on this old video but I want you to know that I had my first indoor sport (High School B-Ball) shoot tonight and I watched your video before tackling the task. I was using my Canon 70D with a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and started out with the setting that you provided .. Man I nailed it like a Boss! Thanks for sharing this valuable insight, now I can keep the money ...lol

    Indoors: 640 @ ISO 4000-5000 F/2.8 Reason: I want some movement in hair. I have hand held down to 1/60th or a sec but I also adjusted my ISO to do a photo of say a ref or someone in the crowd that I wanted. I agree with you about going to F/3.2 or a bit above. But ISO is going to be dependent on the camera, as some bodies handle raising ISO differently. Some are better at dealing with raises in ISO past 6400 some should never really go past 6400.

    I'm using the Canon R6 with the Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS III USM for the last half year and really happy with the combi. I am a team photographer for a basketball team in Belgium, called Kangoeroes Basket Mechelen and they play in the highest division. I always shoot manual (M). 1/1000th shutter speed and F/4 aperture with automatic ISO (limited to 12800). Most of the time this is more than sufficient for me.

    Right... start at ISO 5000... just out of reach of usable consumer-grade SLR photos...
    I'd be more interested to see what he can do with a D3300 and a kit lens =)

      +Hope Peace Any consumer grade SLR can go up to ISO 5,000 no problem now...unless you are talking about 5 year old SLR's.

      Seth Sanchez a looot a lot of people still use 75D, 100D or 700D, especially if you're a beginner, and I doubt experienced photographers are watching this really...

    Great energy - thank you! My daughter plays bball and I often shoot where light dies. I have had success using a 1.8 nifty fifty but considering a 2.8 24-70. Please share your thoughts. Thank you in advance!

    As soon as you said you want to keep your aperture at about 1/1000, I knew this was not a channel I wanted to watch.

    you are neglecting to mention that you are shooting these settings with VR / Image Stabilization. The people commenting here are likely not using those pro lenses and are confused why with similar settings, they are getting poor results....

    Wow You don't know how I have struggled with HS BB. Lighting is horrible. Currently using 1D4 with 85mm 1.8 auto ISO (limited to 6400) trying to shoot by prefocus (at the bucket) and lens in M. I need that 24-70 :) Thanks for a great informative video. Sub.

    • @arberdemiri
      @arberdemiri 7 лет назад

      the 24-70 shouldn't perform better in low light situation, granted you can zoom in and out allowing for for easier composition. Set up your iso on a certain number rather than auto.

    Indoor - my best guess would be lean towards the faster side indoor.. for HIGH SCHOOL. I did fair to good. Need a lot of LR time in post to make the photo scene. using 300 Nikon. Over all photos were fast and reasonably sharpe. It was a good test to see the limits of handheld//1/1000 and up for fast shots. Nikon D5500. Not hi-end but not hi-end events.

    Hello thanks for the tip I have an A6000 with the 17-70 2.8 Tamron this is really fast for bsketball I shoot at Highschool here in Texas I allways use center but when I am under the goal using 17 mm what focus point should I use knowing the person is going to dunk do i just use live view and hope for the best and aim that direction becuase if I use the viewfinder I might get trampled over. I am using aperature 2.8 1600 to 3200

    Do you have any experience using 1D mark II for sports? I wonder how good it is photographing indoor sports.

    • @TexMex421
      @TexMex421 9 лет назад +1

      It was great for it's time, but todays cameras do much better. It has a Max ISO of 3200, and that it's extended range, and was fairly noisy there. I would go with a used 7D before I bought a 1D mark II. And of course a 7D Mark II or a 5D III would be much better than that.

      Many years later, but if anyone stumbles on this:
      The reason is so that you can focus once and recompose as many times as you like as long as the subject is in the zone of focus. Otherwise, if your focus is set to half press on the shutter button, you have to focus on the subject or face then compose each time you let go of the shutter button

    Is there an auto enhancement program that you can load a bunch of Jpegs or RAW shots from the SD card to your computer and have it auto enhance a copy or the original of the shots?

    • @epapa737

      Mariah White 99% of the time you should shoot RAW to edit better and you can later save them as JPEGs in his basketball workflow vid he explained why someone would ever shoot jpegs

    Question for you.. I am considering either the canon ef 70-200mm f/2.8l is ii usm or canon ef 70-200mm f/2.8l usm. the price of the markII is my hang up. I shoot a lot of indoor basketball at the youth age and want something better to get sharper pics. I currently have a 6d and a 7d and use prime 1.8 85mm and a 24-100mm f4.5. Can I get away with the EF 70-200mm f\2.8 USM over the Mark II? Is there really a $1000 difference in picture qaulity?

    • @sjsphotographysports
      @sjsphotographysports  9 лет назад

      It isn't so much of a pic quality difference between the two lenses (there is, but it is very settle), however, the is ii version will give you more consistency, aka higher keeper rate. Hope this helps!

    thanks for the video. I have a 6d with the 70-200 f/2.8 II but I am not sure if raw or jpeg is the way to go for sports. The burst for raw is 5-6 shots whereas the jpeg is unlimited. On the other hand, any mistake (eg white balance setup) is easily fixed with raw but not so with jpeg.
    I shot middle school age games this weekend and used 1/200 -1/300 shutter speed with iso 1600-3200. I am not impressed (with myself) so far. It seems that I got the worst of both worlds, both noise and blur. Any advise?

    Do you use strobes or do you get good results without? The company I shoot for pretty much has a "strobe or don't shoot" policy. I don't have the equipment to do this and want to know if I can make it work without strobing.

      +John Moore I have asked coaches about strobes (using remote Paul c Buff white lightning and pocket wizards pointed at the ceiling) and they won't have it. Thats my experience at hs and jucos.
